We have been staying in the area for a few days and just discovered this bar and restaurant, which is literally just around the corner. We parked at the back. We had no reservation and were surprised to see how busy it was! They advised us it would be 30 minutes wait- no problem. Nice selection of beers on tap and a good kids menu also. The menu nearly had too much choice. The food is all homemade, delicious and decent portions. My daughter had a proper ham sandwich- none of your plastic stuff! Staff were helpful. Very reasonable compared to the fast food outlets nearby. Would definitely come back if in the area again. Really nice atmosphere here too. Highly recommend.

Sunday roast is absolutely delicious, visited 28/07/24, dog friendly , sat in bar , staff very friendly , great menu choice even had smaller plates, both had roast beef , it arrived on heated plates, 2 chunky slices tender delicious beef , roast potatoes , stuffing , Yorkshire pudding and gravy , then a seperate dish with potatoes with skins on, carrots , green beans , Brussels sprouts , cauliflower cheese, and a seperate jug of gravy , I was in heaven , food was piping hot , beef perfect and so was everything else, compliments to the chef, enjoyed everything , liked it so much going for dinner tonight.

We popped in for a drink as staying nearby, we we're extremely shocked at the drink prices, £6.90 for a bottle of Rekorderlig, £4.95 in our local, we wouldn't mind but didn't think the pub was up to much, needless to say we only had the one and didn't return!

My wife and I went on a Saturday, I had the steak pie & my wife had the lasagne. It's the best steak pie pub meal I've ever had and my wife said she couldn't remember a better lasagne in a pub. We were so impressed with the quality of the food that I booked a table for the following day for the Sunday lunch. We had the roast dinner. Wow! It was perfect.

Went on friends' recommendation for light lunch but ended up having roast dinner from the 'pensioners' menu. All four of us had the excellent beef and two pudding with custard. We can only assume this is a loss leader as I don't know how they make a profit at this price. Must go again before they realise. Well stocked bar with well kept beers, friendly efficient staff; such a pleasant change in these strange times.

We visited for Valentines Evening and ordered in advance from their special menu. We had Poached egg on pancetta and black pudding for starter and it was beautifully presented followed by Cod loin on a spinach bed also well presented. Both meals were excellent and restaurant standard presentation. Very friendly helpful staff as usual and very well done chef. Would be happy to return again next Valentines. Hope the special menu is still available then.

Visited with family. Amazing amount of choice on the main menu, but to be honest, the pensioners menu was a little disappointing. The bar staff were very pleasant, and our drinks were served promptly. We all opted for Steak Pie, chips and peas. When the food arrived, the portions were very generous. Everything was delicious, and the steak was lovely and tender, with lots of beefy gravy. Too full to look at the dessert menu! Everywhere was very clean.

Got a beef baguette, was OK, beef was a bit on the dry side. Walked in wasn't greeted for about 5 minutes by anyone. When we finally did we asked for food and the waitress was rude and said they'll have to wait. When our food came I asked for a jug of water and the waitress rolled her eyes, sighed and never brought one out. Would have been happy if the staff weren't so incompetent and rude. Had a long wait which in not complaining about because we were warned when we booked but after the long wait my roast potatoes were burnt. Sausages were overcooked too but edible, but the potatoes weren't. I didn't raise it at the restaurant at the time because food had taken so long to come that we had to get going and, honestly, it wasn't like a dish going cold or something that could have been a honest mistake. Someone looked at those obviously burnt potatoes and said "yes, these are fine to put in front of a customer". We sat outside and the beer garden was nice, lots of lovely flowers. Staff were polite. Our dog was welcome. Pity about the food.

We waited an hour and five minutes for our baguettes with no other customers coming in for food. The sarnies were fine but that’s all they were, not difficult to prepare . I use the Blacksmiths Arms regularly with various friends and have done so for years, the food has always been good and at a reasonable price, and the Staff have always been attentive, but that was until this week. On Monday 27 July (Bank Holiday) I was having lunch with a friend and she ordered Lasagne, on arrival the Lasagne was extremely sloppy and it would have been virtually impossible to eat with a Fork, you would have had a better chance with a Straw, plus it was not very appetising, there was only the two of us in the restaurant so it wasn't as though the Cook (terminology used very lightly) was rushed off their feet, my friend didn't want to make a fuss she just sent it back and chose a replacement meal. I returned today Friday 31/08/2018 to the restaurant with another friend for lunch and I just casually asked if there had been different staff on duty on the Monday, she asked me why and I told her about the Lasagne, she replied quite frostily, she had been in the kitchen on Monday and there was nothing wrong with the Lasagne as she had checked it herself (obviously she had no idea how Lasagne should be cooked) her demeanour was Very Rude and she was Argumentative in front of other customers, so much so that my friend who was with me asked if we should go somewhere else, and had we not been pushed for time we would have done so. She returned to the kitchen with our order and must have mentioned my conversation to a person in the kitchen, to which a guy said loudly enough so that the statement could be clearly heard in the restaurant. 'There was nothing wrong with the Lasagne', there was by this time quite a few customers in the restaurant so it was uncomfortable for me and my friend, after all I had asked the waitress my question very politely and quietly I had booked to go again with 3 friends but I have telephoned and cancelled just like any polite person would, I wont be going back again. we have booked to go to another restaurant where they value customers without argument.

Sadly only two small roast potatoes and I think they were Aunt Bessies as was the yorkshire pudding I think, certainly not fresh. Good amount of veg sprouts, cauliflower, green beans and carrots. The gravy also was most tasy. We had desert of jam sponge with custard and a strawberry cheese cake with bland ice cream and squidgy cream also tasteless. Both desserts look to be bought in, the cheesecake reminded me of and Iceland brand The service was excellent by cheerful staff. For the price it was a decent meal but sadly not the best sunday lunch we've had. Would come again but not in a rush

We've eaten here several times now and it is always open whenever we visit. It was a Saturday when we visited this time and it was busy, no room in the restaurant but you're welcome to eat in the bar if you want we were told.Everything was good and the service reasonably quick considering how busy they were.Definitely recommended.

Had lunch here with a friend as we wanted something light. Ordered tuna and cheese baguette melt and although it took a while to arrive it was absolutely delicious when it did. Even though it was early and midweek the place was very busy especially with the older generation as we noticed on the menu they did a pensioners special which included a roast, dessert and a coffee for £7.50. Lots of people seemed to be taking advantage of this offer! Will definitely return and try a hot meal sometime soon.

Visited here for the first time for lunch with son and granddaughter. The menu is typical pub fair at reasonable prices. Much nicer than chain "pubs/restaurants". Food was brought to our table in a very reasonable time, although the place wasn't what I'd call busy. Service was excellent by the young lady who served us at the bar and then brought our meals to our table, she had excellent rapport with my granddaughter and made us feel very welcome.Overall a nice lunch.

As a family we visit the Blacksmiths Arms very regularly and have never been disappointed especially with the Sunday lunch. Always very good and the meat, whichever is chosen, is always first class.

The table we were assigned in the restaurant area was very close to the bar with men standing at the bar, talking loudly the whole time and people having to push past between them and us. Our order was taken and we were told that it would be about a 30 -40 minute wait. It was actually an hour. Others who came in after us were getting anxious for their food long before an hour. Do they need to employ more people in the kitchen. When the food eventually arrived, it was good and hot, but we will not rush back.

The younger bar staff are friendly and people tell me that the food is good. The place has a slightly grubby, down at heel feel to it though.Major problem is the beer. A nice range of real ale, but all served far too cold.If I wanted a cold drink, I would go for lager. The beers aren't cheap, so I expect a decent pint for my cash.I won't be going back.

Beer served far too cold which spoilt an excellent range of beers when I visited Blacksmiths Arms Tue 15th March. Ambience good so such a pity about temperature of beers. Suggest landlord consult CAMRA guidelines re serving beer.

Brilliant until the muppet landlord is left on his own. Waste of space and an insult to muppets. The girls are excellent bar staff though.

I live locally and have eaten here on number of occasions. Food is generally good and would recommend. Visited today but only beer was on the agenda. Not at all impressed despite what was a great beer selection - Timothy Taylor's Landlord, Sharps Doombar etc. In fact the taste quality of these beers was very very disappointing! All beers were over chilled, and as a result almost tasteless. Low serving temperature are okay for lagers but hand pulled beers absolutely not. This fact seems to be lost on the owner who simply states, ''you can't please everyone''. Well I wasn't pleased! As a result I will take my trade elsewhere. The owner needs to be aware that beers should be served at between 10-13C to optimise taste, not the 5-8C which was on offer today.

When I moved to Huntington I was only a foreign Au Pair and I didn't know anything about English food and flavors. At the Blacksmiths Arm I tried nearly all the menu and I can tell that there is no meal that I do not like. I love their Sunday Lunch and for me it is the best I had in the last 3 years in York. The staff il amazing, lovely and friendly. The service is good. The pub looks to me exactly what I would expect from an English Pub. Don, the owner, became a friend during these years and all the lovely girls that work in there are absolutely amazing. I would suggest this Pub to anyone who wanna experience a night in a familiar pub rather than in a franchising environment.

called into the blacksmiths on Saturday for lunch and was not disappointed. The menu is varied for a small pub. The food arrived hot and there was plenty of it the price is quite reasonable. Three meals costing £27.00 there is also a good selection of drinks including real ales.

We visited just after 8pm this evening for a celebratory dinner. We were seated quickly and our drinks order taken. There were at least eight specials on the board in the restaurant, plus the a la carte menu. My two friends opted for steak; one rump, one sirloin with salad, slaw, onion rings and chips, I had the bangers and mash (a whole Cumberland sausage ring) which came with enough fresh vegetables for two people! The portions were huge. This isn't a place you leave feeling hungry! Incredibly my pals ordered dessert.. One steamed jam pudding with custard and one steamed syrup sponge pudding with custard. When they arrived they were so big four people could have shared them. The prices too were surprisingly reasonable. I've eaten mediocre meals that were twice the price. It's just gone midnight and I'm writing this review because I'm so full I can't sleep...I can't recommend it highly enough. Try it, you'll like it,

I was at the blacksmiths arms for a fathers day evening meal with the wife and kids. The Sunday roast was fantastic and it's one of the few places that sells a good pint of Timothy taylors landlord. The only downside to it, was some of the customers present creating a bad atmosphere. One of the tables present, coincidentally it was David L. from the previous review. It seems his table was nearly an hour late for their booking, the pub filled up while I was there and I have never seen such a rude, pretensious person giving the staff so much grief, complaining about waiting too long for their food taking too long to arrive to their table when I've heard the staff letting them know about it way before hand. I have worked in pubs in the past, I know how it goes, when a pub fills up in half an hour there is nothing no one can do about it except their best. Maybe that group expected the whole pub to stop their trade until that gentleman's booking decided to show up. Apart from this ordeal, it's a fantastic pub, I'll come back more often and recommend it to everyone.

Having booked a table, we had to wait at the bar for some while even to be welcomed, with people arriving after us being shown to tables before us. Once seated, it took a long time for anyone to take a drinks order, or to bring a drinks order, bring menus, etc. Indeed, so slow was the service that we decided that we would leave if our order hadn’t been taken within 10 minutes (having already waited some little while). In fact, it was taken within eight minutes! The food itself was lovely, but the service was chaotic, if friendly, and slow. There are much better places to eat in York.

I was at the hotel early morning ahead of a conference and wanted tea and toast although not a resident. A young waiter called Abdul was very helpful and although his lounge section was not open for drinks etc at 7.40am he assisted and organised both for me. A professional , helpful and informative waiter who should be recognised for his service. Thanks again - it certainly left a positive impression with me about the hotel.

My wife and myself have eaten here a fair few times. But never have been as wowwed as we were last night. The gentleman at front of house was impeccable. A credit to the pub. After surveying the specials menu we both decided that the shin of beef pie with champ mash and fresh veg sounded too good to be missed. We were not disappointed! We both said, quite possibly the best pub meal we have ever ever had! The beef was cooked perfectly, the short crust pastry was just incredible. My wife Lydia said it was just like her mum's. That's some credit to the chef! The champ mash was delicious and the veg cooked absolutely spot on. Not a second too long. Again, perfect! We were probably too full for dessert but we were never going to resist if the main was anything to go by. My wife chose the Eton mess. I've never seen anyone look so happy eating a dessert. It looked amazing and indeed it was. I chose the apple and blueberry crumble. Simple and delicious. Just how I like it. All washed down with two fine glasses of Primitivo. And all very reasonable too. Top marks to everyone at the pub. We most definitely will be back!
