The Marcia Inn in York

Having been here a few months ago and had an excellent meal,decided to travel from our home in Scarborough ,straight here for Sunday lunch in the hoe they could fit us in, my goodness so relieved when they found us a table.I ordered beef roast,husband had the turkey.Everything about the food was to die for! Beautiful Yorkshire puddings(massive) lovely and crisp.Roast potatoes (think a hint of garlic) red cabbage whole carrots cooked to perfection,cauliflower cheese,broccoli,and the most fantastic mash think with chive? not sure but out of this world(and I am not a fan of mash) Both meats cooked to perfection and so tasty as was the gravy. I cannot praise the chef/cook highly enough! wished we lived nearer!

The most lovely small ribs and loaded chips I think I've had in ages. White wine is quality also and sat outside in the sun at front of the pub. Planning my next visit already, and will have exactly same meal.

Having eaten here before we knew this pub had a good reputation for food and it did not disappoint. Service was good and food arrived promptly. There is a good selection of real ales to choose from as well as the usual favourites. The standard portion of haddock and chips with mushy peas is huge - the haddock almost covering the plate and the gammon steak is again, very big and served with a fried egg and pineapple ring. If you have a smaller appetite, there is a smaller fish portion on offer. This is a true 'locals' pub that often has quiz nights on a Wednesday, which they will warn you about when booking as apparently it can get quite noisy. The quiz starts at 9pm and we were well gone by then. Overall, not cheap, but very good value with good attentive service, piping hot food that has not been kept hot. Keep it up, Marcia.

Booked for the Valentines menu which was advertised as platters. There was a choice of two starter platters, four main platters and one dessert platter. You also had a choice of a complimentary drink. Someone rang a couple of days before the day and asked for our choices. On arrival my wife and I were shown to a table for two at the conservatory end which was subtly lit and decorated for Valentine’s Day. We were served our complimentary drinks and a few minutes later we were served our chosen starter platter “A”. It looked amazing and plenty of it. Creamy garlic mushrooms, chicken liver pate, black pudding Bon Bon’s, chicken & chorizo. We managed to get through most of it and asked for a few minutes before bringing out the main. We had gone for the fish platter and when that arrived we knew there was no way we were going to manage the dessert platter. The fish melted in your mouth and the chips were amazing. There was battered haddock, cod loin, sea food basket, chips, peas & salad. The dessert platter was boxed up for us to take home. The service was excellent, and as we left my wife was given a wrapped single red rose. Thank you Gary and staff for a brilliant night and should you choose to do it again next year you can count on us for a booking. Don’t do reviews much but I felt I had to do this one as it was so good. Sorry I didn’t take photos.

Found this pub to be very friendly. Food was very tasty and served quickly. We sat in the bar area with our dogs who were made very welcome. We both had the beef and ale pie. Would recommend. Will definitely visit here again.

We booked a table for four 2pm. Lovely atmosphere, caring, and friendly staff, delicious food at a reasonable price. It was excellent.

Had Sunday lunch and it was excellent. I would love to go every Sunday. The beef was cooked rare, medium, or well done, however you wanted it cooking. A friend had the lamb and said it was very good.

Visited The Marcia with family whilst away celebrating a special birthday. On arrival all the staff were super friendly but still very professional. The pub has a lovely cosy rustic country pub feel. Numerous visits here over our 8 day stay locally. Drinks only but always served well. Service brilliant by all staff members, friendly, receptive and witty. Clearly some decent quality training in evidence. Or if not, then whoever hires staff is a genius. Thank you, each visit was a joy.

Popped in for a quick bite. Website described a wagyu burger so thought must be worth a try! The menu for the burger read differently but I was in the mood for a burger… Chips amazing burger bun, onion rings all good. First time we’ve been here. Sent an email to book a table and the reply was within an hour. Been shopping at the designer outlet and thought we’d call for food afterwards. Everything about our visit was brilliant. Staff,food, friendliness, just everything. Just wish we lived closer so we could call more often!! Might just travel the 45 minutes for another visit. Ladies work lunch and it was just lovely. Steak with potatoes, amazing gravy, fab sprouts, carrots and parsnips. Yummy. For dessert had the Cheese and Biscuits and that was fabulous. Loads of cheese, biscuits and butter and chutney. X

About 16 in the group for lunch today. The food was excellent. I had the turkey and it was definitely the tastiest ever I have ever eaten eating out. All the trimmings that went with it were served hot and cooked just to my liking. Extra gravy on the side was great too. The puddings looked amazing but unfortunately I was too full to try. I did have room for a delicious 'home made mince pie with my coffee to properly finish off. The service was brilliant and very welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble allowing everyone to relax and enjoy the meal and each other's company. The atmospere in the pub itself was very good too. I would highly recommend The Marcia if you are looking for good tasty food (good portions) with excellent service at a very reasonable price. It was memorable for all the right reasons. Five stars from me for everything.

It’s sad that such a lovely pub that did actually serve a delicious meal couldn’t really be enjoyed because of the frosty reception be one lady, of course we expected to eat our meal out because of covid restrictions but we was placed in the coldest area possible, our son prior to us turning up asked to be moved to nearer the heaters which was more sheltered and was sharply told the tables was booked which was fine but one hr later they moved a group who had complained after us to the place we asked to be moved to then also moved a second group to a warmer area who by the way was just drinking and not just paying for starters main meals and drinks , I would have walked out prior to my meal coming but couldn’t upset my son who had arranged for us to eat here, how rude to not even ask us if we would like to move before our meal came when these warmer areas became vacant I was frozen and left half my food because I just couldn’t enjoy it, we never once got asked if everything was ok just totally ignored us, Never will I recommend here to any of my own customers if I know such a rude ill mannered person is serving here if any staff members I manage behaved like this I would be retraining them and having words , never in all my years of dining out have I ever felts so unwelcome absolute no customer service skills at all

Hadn't been to Bishopthorpe for a good few years so I thought I would go back . Having looked at Sunday Lunches and reviews we decided on the Marcia . Definetly made the right decision , the whole place was refurbished from 12 yrs ago . The food was top quality and locally sourced . My wife doesn't usually eat everything on her plate but she didn't leave anything . The staff were very friendly and attentive , we will definetly be going back again .We live outside of area but its worth the travel Great all round Glenn and Michelle

Unfortunately, I agree with the other reviews that say that the staff are rude. I believe my experience of this was with the landlady. I did not feel welcome and wouldn't recommend it.

Tenía un plato principal maravilloso de un gran eglefino rebozado, que se servía caliente y era muy agradable y sabroso. Tenía pudding de caramelo pegajoso y natillas de postre. Grandes porciones. Buenos precios mejorados aún más por la actual campaña de cenar fuera. El servicio fue excelente e incluso el chef vino a saludarnos y ver si estábamos contentos con nuestro pedido. Espero volver la próxima vez que esté en Yorkshire.

Visité este pub para tomar una copa dos veces durante la semana. Tiene una hermosa taberna al aire libre en la parte trasera, donde podíamos sentarnos con mucho espacio entre nosotros y otros grupos de personas. Un pequeño aspecto negativo fue que la señora detrás de la barra podría haber sido un poco más acogedora.

Visitamos ayer por la tarde, nos desinfectamos las manos antes de entrar, entramos para ser recibidos por una mujer grosera detrás de la barra que comenzó a hablar sobre mí diciéndonos a mí y a mi pareja que desinfectamos nuestras manos e inicie sesión. Solo quería preguntar si estaban aún sirviendo comida, mi pareja tuvo que hablar con ella para preguntarle a lo que ella respondió que solo pescado y papas fritas. ¡Me alegro de no haber comido aquí porque olía a urinario de hombres! Caminé de regreso y comimos una hermosa comida en la calle con un personal agradable que no pudo hacer más por nosotros.

Following a recommendation we chose the Marcia for a funeral tea for 30. The food was tasty and plentiful and a special plate of food was provided for the vegan in the party. Apparently it was delicious. There was plenty of room and it's a nice setting. The landlady (sorry I didn't get her name) was really helpful with all our requests and set up a table for photos and a memory book. All in all it was excellent food and service. Thank you so much.

We ate here for the first time with family for Sunday lunch. After reading some of the previous reviews we were looking forward to a good Sunday roast. Unfortunately we were to be disappointed, the lamb shank was quite obviously of the vacuum packed variety and completely tasteless. The vegetables were barely warm and the roast potatoes could only be described as tough, I suspect they had been precooked and warmed up as they were completely dried out. Needless to say we won’t be making a second visit, it’s a shame because this is a nice pub with a good atmosphere but need to up there game with the food.

We visited The Marcia on Tuesday evening for a family meal. 2 of us have Coeliac Disease. It was great to see such a range on the menu to choose from. Our meals were ready in good time and all were delicious. Often with Gluten Free food in pubs/restaurants etc items are simply left out if they contain gluten but nt at The Marcia. The Chef had prepared GF options for us. The onion rings were absolutely fabulous. We were all served generous helpings and left feeling full. The staff were friendly and attentive. A great place to eat for those on a gluten free diet.

We went because it was a CAMRA awarded pub this year. The beer was good Leeds IPA. For mains we had fish pie which was packed with fish and mussels and very flavoursome, and pork belly which was not so good - overcooked meat so stringy and dry, and the mustard and and whisky sauce was tasteless - had to ask for more English mustard. The vegetables were fine but far too much emphasis on onions. Service was pleasant and responsive and the atmosphere is good.

Booked a table early on a Saturday evening for 4 adults and 1 child. Linda and her team were amazing so welcoming and very friendly.To start the butternut squash soup was declared superb, the crayfish cocktail excellent and our 8 year nephew loved his garlic bread. The service was slow. Had to wait too long for drinks and I wouldn't have minded the wait for the food, if it had been worth it. Unfortunately,the fish pie was like none I've have ever had before. It wasnt awful but nothing nice to say about. My family were also unimpressed. £20 for lamb which was all fat, 2/3 left uneaten.We never complained as everything was cooked but felt it was alot to pay to less than average food.

I love Sunday lunch, and I can't recommend this one enough, it was absolutely delicious. The roast potatoes, turkey, gravy, Yorkshire pudding...everything was just incredible. I also had the honeycomb cheesecake, which was light, amazing and perfect for after a meal. The atmosphere inside was friendly, inviting and cosy - exactly what you want, and the staff were so friendly. The conservatory was really cosy, to be honest, we just didn't want to leave. I can't wait to return!

El conservatorio de Marcia fue fantástico para la celebración de mi cumpleaños. El buffet era absolutamente precioso, incluso para mis dos huéspedes problemáticos. También hubo un festival de cerveza esa noche, pero el personal se aseguró de que estuviéramos bien atendidos. Gracias a Marcia y al personal por hacer de mi celebración de cumpleaños una noche maravillosa.

Esta fue nuestra primera visita, pero ciertamente no será la última.

No problems here filling up the seats. This place is rocking and rolling. Excellent cuisine and great staff attention. Had a great Sunday lunch with family and won’t forget to book well in advance next time.

We have sunday lunch every Sunday for over 2 years .Food always first rate .you wait a little longer because the food is fresh cooked & a treat. Landlady ,landlord + staff treat you like family, a pleasure to be there . No different during the week . Try it.

This is a friendly local - a proper pub with an attached restaurant, good menu and good service. Well worth a visit perhaps ahead of some other places in this village

I booked the Marcia in July for a surprise birthday party for my mum- Gary and Linda were really helpful with all of the planning arrangements and happy for me to bring in a cake and balloons and also offered some music options. They were really helpful with the food arrangements and were able to cater for guests who were gluten-free and vegan really well. The food was delicious! Gary and Linda kindly offered for me to set up a tab for the arrival drinks for my guests which i could pay as i went along to save me over-ordering which not many places do and i appreciated that. The staff were really helpful on the day and worked very hard to make sure everyone was fed and watered! Everyone had a great time- i would definitely recommend the Marcia as a venue for a family party. Thanks everyone!

Went for Sunday roast yesterday 23 June, chose beef absolutely spot on then had lemon cheesecake which was also spot on! Great service, nice staff would definitely visit again.

Long wait for food. Staff not attentive. Can only assume a private function must have been ongoing in the ‘back room’ which was sectioned off and must have taken priority. No explanation as to why our food order was taking so long and no offer to replenish our drinks in the meantime. Food was good when it eventually arrived.

Walked in to be met by rude lady saying we’re full no smile or suggestion we had a drink or wait,our custom clearly not wanted!!! Had a lovely greeting and meal over the road 😊

Visited again after a lovely Valentines meal to try the new menu, had the steak and the chicken and pesto lasagne with ales and wine followed with puddings and coffee, great service again, no rush and fantastic quality food again - excellent value.

Ella se acercó a nuestro lado, nos vio en el bar y nunca reconoció nuestra presencia, incluso si acababa de decir hola, cualquier cosa, pero nada se acercaba. . . así que en ese momento nos fuimos y no volveremos ni lo recomendaremos. . . . Tales modales de vergüenza no cuestan nada. . . . . . .

We had the Valentines Menu, three courses. Each course was excellent - fantastic quality, fresh and very tasty - tempura prawns, fish and then gooseberry crumble with a few real ales too. Wonderful surroundings, great service and there was no rush - we had our table for the entire evening.
