Without doubt the worst meal out I have had in a very long time. There were two options for Sunday lunch - turkey or beef. I chose the beef - what a mistake! The slices of meat had obviously been reheated and came adorned with black spots - presumably from grilling - and were extremely tough. The veg was mediocre - however the Yorkshire Pudding was pretty good. I complained and said I was not prepared to pay the full price for the meal - the chef put a 20% discount on my meal, but nothing was done about the cost of the meals that my five friends tried to eat. It also has to be said that it looked like the carpet in the bar had not been vacuumed for a very long time - it was covered in dog hair, food crumbs and fluff. The ladies toilet walls were ingrained with dirt, dust and cobwebs. We will not be back!

Just edited my previous negative review to write this one. Under new management, this place has massively been turned around. For the first time in about 4 years, there's actually somebody friendly behind the bar! After a string of uninterested/transactional/unhelpful bar staff, there's now smiles and politeness. The food is AMAZING. I'm looking forward to going back for another pie, chips and peas. The best pie I've had for 12 years. Nothing comes close. Finally, The Cottage has been saved!

Had a lovely lunch here, the team are super friendly and helpful, nice atmosphere, really clean and dog friendly 😊 Has plenty of outdoor space if the weather is nice enough. We both had the crispy southern fried chicken burger which was delicious, only slight criticism is we thought it would have been served with homemade chips this would have made it 5 star without a doubt ⭐ would definitely return if we are in the area again. 😀

Went for a catch up with a school friend and an work colleague when we all worked together in Haxby Coop when it first opened. We had Black Sheep, Inch's cider, diet coke and apple and raspberry J2O. Had a good catch up before we ordered 2 Whitby scampi and chips with garden peas or mushy peas and 10oz flat iron steak with mushrooms, homemade onion ring and homemade chips with skin on. The food was delicious and the steak cooked to perfection and very tender. We had 3 Yorkshire teas to follow. We carryed on having a good catch up. Very nice friendly young lady who served us.

Stopped here on our way home from Whitby, was struggling to find anyone who did food in the area. Googled the cottage inn and was very pleasantly surprised, lovely spacious and cool interior, cask ales, gins, and a lovely pub menu. We had scampi and chips/fries, peas and steak and ale pie with chips and mushy peas, all of which were beautifully cooked and served. All in all a first rate experience with very pleasant and welcoming staff, highly recommended.

BE AWARE OF PARKING. I've not long lived in York and met a friend in this pub as it was a good halfway point. We had a lovely afternoon, sat outside under the shade and had a couple of rounds of drinks. only went to this pub, no where else in the village. Unfortunately we missed the signs and were not told by the bar staff that there were restrictions/charges and needed to register our cars. Received a fine of £60 (£100 if not paid in the 14 day period x 2 as we had a car each). So disappointed as there is no le- way for a simple and genuine mistake.

Semi-regular over a number of years. Unfortunately it's gone downhill and starting to feel rundown ('beer garden' feels incredibly unloved, even a lick of paint to the fences/tables would improve it massively. Upholstery torn badly on the seating in the pool table area). Cosy, friendly, busy atmosphere of old has gone (previous long term landlord left) and the music played in the pub is as if you've time travelled back to the 80s and are going through a rough divorce, it's weirdly depressing to sit and listen to. Always been a pub with a lot of potential and some minor changes could improve it massively from how it is currently. I will come to its defence on the parking thing though, there are signs everywhere whichever way you enter the pub and it was presumably done to prevent it becoming an overflow of the doctors surgery car park next door.

The fine also arrived after the two week discount period! To say I'm furious is a gross understatement. No one appears to be interested in helping resolve this situation either. What an absolute scam. I will NEVER return to this pub ever again. The lack of patrons when I visited is now not difficult to understand; what an absurd way to treat your patrons!!!

Can't say my latest visit to the Cottage was as good as my first. Only one person on the bar who didn't seem all too happy about being there and kept huffing and rolling her eyes. Informed me that the kitchen would be closing at some stage so we wouldn't be able to order a full meal which was fine, but we ordered drinks, and even the queue to get those took thirty minutes. Only towards the end of my visit did a second barmaid appear.

Ignore all the 1 star reviews about parking charges, while yes they do have parking enforcement to ensure only patrons park there signs are all over the car park and when I went they were even on every table. The screen to record your registration is right next to the contactless terminal, if anyone goes in there and gets a parking charge it's entirely down to the driver, the pub could not make it any clearer.

DIABOLICAL FOOD AND STAFF!! What used to be a lovely pub with lovely food and staff is no more! Absolutely shocking place if you not been in afew months I recommend going elsewhere! Upon walking in we was met with a very frosty faced women not the usually friendly welcome we had been used too! I ordered my usual (10oz serloin steak) I ordered it medium well. When the plate come out I was beyond disappointed the meal was half the size it used too be, the steak half the usual size was mostly fat and gristle over cooked and chewy. Chips are no longer home cooked all though they wasnt bad the portion size was a fraction of what it used too be, same the other sides. I held off eating waiting for some one to ask if all was ok as some one usally would other times ive been, to ask to swap the meal for something else. No one came and the women was in and out the back then she had what appeared to be a meeting with some one (i heard her say she was from hieniken) So I was unable to speak with her and was no other staff behind the bar. I had to be somewhere so had no time to go elsewhere to eat and been a dibetic i had to eat something before my appointment, not only that the others I was with didn't want theirs to go cold so they started to eat their meals, so I had to option but to eat the meal. That been said as I started to eat my meal I started to wonder if maybe since the menu had change so dramatically in quality and size, that the price would likely have changed to reflect this. Eventually the women came over (after we had been finished) to clear the table and reluctantly asked if was OK again not friendly and quite passive aggressive, I expressed that it was not the standard I expected in a kind manner, as I had been many times prior and always enjoyed it. In expressing my disappointment to the women I asked if it was the same price as the old standard of food which to my shock she said it was again rather rudely, and was not only rude but was smirking aswell while telling me i ate the food (barring half the steak that was covered in gristle) which i explained why i had to eat the food, again she was clever and smirking. At this point I made it clear I would not be paying £19 for a steak that was the standard of frozen meal or a chain meal such as flying legends at best. The women was not open to offer any resolution and whats worse, not even a apology was given. Now as a business women myself I would of been so apologetic and done what I good to turn a negative experience into a positive one, after all its the custom of the public that keeps you in business with out them there is no business!! at the very very least a sincere apology should of been given and the offer to pass the feedback on to the relevant persons to try improve service and quality in the future. After refusing to pay at first, i agree the food was eaten depsite been very mediocre not worth the £19 i tried to meet this women half way by saying i would pay £10 for the meal rough price as a chain establishment steak as that's the quality I received in fact for a serlion i have had better rumps with less fat and gristle. Again was met with passive aggressive behaviour no compromise and no apology, the women just walked off! I would absolutely not of paid full price for that meal or even paid at all, I since found out lucky for her my god mother paid my bill with her the bill, again the women offered no apology when my god mother chose to pay the bill. Since found out this place is under new ownership for the last few weeks and it shows and I would be very surprised if they last another few weeks. This women should not work with the public a customer service focused role is not for her at all. I would also suggest reverting back to the old suppliers/chefs and service of food or changing the price to reflect the sub standard food service. Over all was deplorable service food and atmosphere Real shame!! Used to be such a good place.

Only one option and was told that it was a pub after all and they sold alcohol. A little taken aback with the attitude we questioned that people may be driving to be told that they haven’t asked people to drive there!! Perhaps the new manager was having a bad day but judging by the other reviews on this site that may not be the case. Didn’t book a table and seemingly dodged a bullet on that front too. Went to the Cottage for some Sunday lunch and was disappointed. There was plenty of food in terms of quantity, but unfortunately the quality wasn’t great. The meat (I had pork) was nice, but the potatoes were average and the Yorkshires were well over done. Mine just tasted charred. Alright meal overall but doesn’t compete with other Sunday roasts in the village and nearby. The Black Horse round the corner has better quality Sunday roasts, with more options, and is a similar price. The dessert menu was difficult to read (due to typos, layout, and poor grammar) and my pudding did not come as described, although was tasty all the same. The pub would benefit from getting the menus professionally done, and perhaps a uniform / staff standard. That being said, all members of staff were welcoming and lovely. The toilets could do with some attention as well. Bins cost a fiver but there was just an empty bucket with “towel bin” written on it (with no hand towels), and a mark on the wall where the hand dryer had come off. I’m sure some TLC and attention to detail would fix most of the small issues I found with my experience today. There was nothing major at all, it was just underwhelming and, to be honest, a bit scruffy. I understand the current owners to be relatively new to the pub, so some oversights are expected, but the standard today wasn’t what we expected at all. We won’t be returning for food any time soon but will have a drink 👍🏻

Well, where to start? We were a group of 25, we had booked for Sunday lunch. It didn't start well, as we queued for about 15 minutes just to enter car reg numbers and get a drink. Very short staffed, but in fact the pub was almost empty. We went through to the function room, where it was bitterly cold, we had to keep our coats on. Apparently the boiler had broken down several days earlier! The two halogen heaters had little effect in such a large area. We had booked for 12.30, and had pre-ordered, but food didn't even start arriving till 1.15, served by two young girls who obviously couldn't cope, we felt sorry for them. Only beef meals arrived - 1 slice of beef, a Yorkshire pudding, and a single roast potato, swimming in a vast sea of gravy. Then plates of veg. Cold plates and lukewarm food. At that point it became quite farcical, as they just kept bringing out more vegetables, while those waiting for lamb had no meal. Then we were told by one of the girls that the manager had been admitted to hospital the previous day. Obviously this was unfortunate, but in those circumstances and with no heating the booking should have been cancelled. One of our number had asked for a gluten free meal. One of the girls came to talk to her and told her that she wouldn't be able to have mashed potato, as it contained milk! Absolutely shocking lack of knowledge as to what gluten free means. The same lady was later told that her meal would be delayed as they had to go out and buy gluten free gravy! In fact she did get a meal, a very unappetising looking thick slice of lamb, some mashed potato and a stuffing ball, no gravy, and no veg, as by then the veg were stone cold. Someone came out of the kitchen at our request to talk to us. We pointed out that it was unlikely that any of the people there, most of whom lived locally, would ever return, but she really couldn't have cared less. The chef came out briefly but didn't engage with anyone. At 1.30, with no sign of any more lamb meals, several of us decided to leave. As I left, the young man behind the bar called rudely after me telling me that I had to pay for my (non existent) meal! I've been a regular customer at the Cottage Inn through several changes of management, and there have been occasional problems in the past, but nothing like this, and not an isolated incident judging by other reviews. It remains to be seen how long the current management last. They seem to have no training and little knowledge of the hospitality business.

We missed last year's New Year's Eve party but heard great things, so we were thrilled to see the same band advertised to play again this year and even better that a buffet was included this time, too! I heard some negative experiences about the new management but thought we'd give them the benefit of the doubt. Biggest anti-climax of the year! The band was great, but we all felt sorry for them as they struggled to alleviate everyone's disappointment in the lack of effort and care by the venue itself. Nobody hosting, No welcome, No table clothes, Toilets blocked off, horrible damp smell. An empty table with a stack of paper plates but no food. pieces of scrap paper attached to the bar saying 'cash only', 'no draught beers, no spirits. When asked if there was still going to be food as advertised, the bar staff looked puzzled and didn't know. A friend of ours left to go and grab food elsewhere and come back. The buffet eventually came out at almost 10 pm and was mediocre at best. I saw one of the band returning from the main bar, and due to a soaking wet floor that hadn't been mopped, he slipped and fell flat on his back! Later, the same thing almost happened to an old man returning from the front bar toilet! All guests were dressed as you would expect for a nice NYE party, and the manager, most of his staff and his friends were in tracksuits, drinking out front and playing pool all night without acknowledging any guests. Most expensive NYE ticket locally and for what? It was a very awkward and uncomfortable evening all around.

Attended a nye event and was a complete disaster. Zero organisation from staff, most of which were underage and drunk/drinking. Clearly too busy to collect any glasses. Ice served with bare hands at one point. Function room smelled musty and toilets were closed. No welcome, no signage to say how to enter function room. No signs to advise anyone where the toilets were and the only door between the function room and main bar to the toilets was blocked by a barrier and staff drinking. Absolute shambles. Nobody checked tickets so quite a few people walked in without paying. Landlords friends going behind the bar and serving themselves. No spirits on back bar and main bar ran out of gin very early! Band were great and mostly kept the night alive, felt a bit sorry for them as many people were going to them with questions meant for the host which should’ve been the landlord but he was too busy getting drunk with his mates. Food was below average and at one point a couple of people ordered takeaways as the bar staff told us no food was coming. Will not return ever again with the current management. Worth pointing out that last year was amazing (different management). AVOID

Went New Year 2022. Wonderful night. What a difference this year. Band saved the day as everything else went from sublime to the ridiculous! No attempt it seems to sell any tickets for the night, consequently approx 30 turn up, 90% band members friends and family. No locals, so presume they knew something that we didn't! Tables not dressed as last year, bar only serving beers or wine. Spirits etc had to be obtained from the pub. Ice dispensed by young under age bar staff using hands as no scoops. Main bar in pub had one pleasant young girl dressed smartly and very good with everyone. Thank God for her. Main bar ran out of gin at 10.30. Function room ran out of 2 beers by 9. Would have been 8pm if full body count in function room. Whole night was a let down, as if we were the last people they wanted in there. Glasses not cleared, food inedible, apart from sandwiches. We won't be bothering again, such a shame after last year but I think they didn't even try to make it any more than it was, A SHAMBLES FROM START TO FINISH.

We bought tickets in advance due to the tickets selling out quickly last year, not sure why we bothered buying tickets this year as it quite quickly turned into a free for all. No one checking you’d actually purchased a ticket, no welcome from the new landlord/landlady and pub run by underage staff. The function room bar had very little to offer & even then ran out of what was available. Bar staff require food hygiene training, served ice for drinks using their hands. Luckily it was a bottled drink that was ordered. Can’t fault the band that were playing, felt extremely sorry for them considering the amount of effort that was put into last years NYE party.

I never normally write reviews but in this instance I felt I need to, we ordered Sunday lunch which soon arrived unfortunately it went downhill from there, the food was cold as were the plates then the vegetables arrived which were also cold when they brought the vegetables back they were still only Luke warm. There were no condiments on the table we had to ask for the food to be reheated then we had to ask for spoons to dish the vegetables then again ask for mint sauce etc, after all this my plate hardly had any gravy on but by this time I couldn’t be bothered to ask for more. The only nice experience were the staff who were polite and tried their best. I understand the pub has not long been taken over by a new landlord and this is why I am doing this review as this needs to be addressed and soon. Only dropped in for drinks. Phone calls suggested half the food menu was unavailable that evening. Table beside us ordered fish and chips and it looked a very high standard. Bar staff were polite, rowdy drunks from the private function made the experience mildly uncomfortable.

Very nice place. Food was lovely and homemade. Staff very friendly. Good for food but also nice just for a drink. Good range of beers too. Areas to sit outside. Good disabled access but please make sure you put in car registration into terminal when you go inside pub. They do a great Sunday lunch and have undercover outside seating both front and back of the pub. Approx 15/20min drive from York. Xx

Don’t come in a car. Tried to get a table but there was no space so we left. A week later we get a parking fine through the door for £100! Avoid if driving. —— Update: despite the owner’s response here, we contacted the pub before writing this review and expected it to be easily resolved. We were told there was nothing they could do.

Went with a group of friends. Beer choice OK. Barman/owner not the friendliest. As bar area was very busy couldn't get near to where you were meant to order. Called my order over and the barman served but placed all the drinks in front of him and I had to reach across to get them even though I was at the bar, just not the right place. Petty and unwelcoming.

Walking through the market we stumbled across the Restaurant. Beautiful old building inside and out. Greeted by friendly staff. Myself and my mum ordered the roast beef, large fluffy yorkshire puds, melt in the mouth beef, crispy roast potatoes and lots of veg on side, gravy was also rich and tasty. My dad and son had fish and chips, lovely crispy batter and crisp homemade chips. My wife had the salmon tagliatelle, slightly small portion but suited my wife's appetite and was rich and creamy with well cooked fish. Overall an excellent experience and will visit again when in York next, highly recommended.
