Golden Lion in York

Ordered the BBQ Chicken which was wrapped in streaky bacon, smothered in beer cheese with crispy onions served with vine tomatoes, chips and onion rings also had a pint of Theakston's Old Perculier. What can I say about the establishment: A warm welcome awaits, staff are friendly, polite and very attentive. Atmosphere in the pub was inviting with low music playing which is not intrusive if you are trying to enjoy a conversation with friends. Golf was playing on the TV (no sound) therefore a nice addition if you are a sports fan. The food was fabulous and cooked to perfection. I would highly recommend this establishment and you will not be disappointed with either the warm welcome, atmosphere, food or drinks on offer.

Never had food here but I saw the plates and the food looked ok Service is good, staff attentive and the drinks are a really good price for York Atmosphere: well it is always busy with lots of people because the price is good for things, so atmospheric.

The food wasn't very good. I ordered whole tail scampi chips and peas. What I got was no peas, tiny bite size pieces of scampi,the chips were nice my grandaughter wasn't impressed with her food and left most of hers 😕

The food and setting was nice. Zara gave great service, helping us carefully with our order and ensuring that the dietary requirements of our group were met.

Lunch with a friend, we both enjoyed our food, & the r'ose was exceptional, we will Definitely return will recommend, to others, the staff were good, too.

Good old fashioned pub, didn't have food because there was a 45min wait, but the food being served to customers looks appetising with plenty food on plates. Plenty draught beers to choose the tvs were showing the sky sports.

Was I your pub on sat the 7th of Sept, at around 2.30pm,we got our drinks and sat in a corner near the window. When we sat down there was a couple with 2 gray hounds dogs, when we looked down one of the dogs was urinating on the floor in front of us, and our feet was in the dog s urine, the people around we noticed was having meals, I know that it is a dog friendly pub but having this happen in front of people eating to me is a not nice,myself I just think it's a health issue, we're food is been served and dogs are urinating on the floor while people are eating is a no no for me, as we were leaving a girl did come with a mop bucket and mop to clean it up, this should not be happening.

We visited this pub on a Saturday afternoon. It's a great place but, they allow dogs and we were sat next to a couple who had a greyhound and a whippet. The dogs were urinating all over the floor causing big puddles, this should not be allowed in anywhere that serves food. The ladies toilets were also an absolute disgrace, dirty and smells of sewerage. We won't be returning.

Popped in on Saturday for a quick bite to eat. Was very busy so had to wait for a table, staff were all really friendly and bubbly. It's not the cheapest place in York but the atmosphere was buzzing, drinks were great and the Nacho's were just what we needed.

Visited last week. After hours walking round York me and my daughter needed a rest and decided to get some food. It smelt damp, seemed ‘sticky’ but it was relatively busy so sometimes this means it’s a good pub. I was so disappointed. £14 each for a variation of hunters chicken with beer cheese (which we personally didn’t like). The chicken breast seemed small with a small handful of chips & 2 small onion rings. Really overpriced. The bar staff and waitress were lovely tho.

Lovely pub, had lunch special could have a bit more steak on sandwich but was tasty. This is an American writing review where everything comes super-sized! Cheers!

We planned on eating here but when our round of drinks took 20 minutes, we went elsewhere. We had three drinks of which one came in a dirty glass and one was the wrong one. It wasn’t very busy so this shouldn’t have taken that long.

Louis & kirstie were absolutely delightful 😊. Smiling & very helpful. A big thank you to them. The steak & ale pie was beautiful, would have liked real mash but I ate it all. My girlfriend had scampi and enjoyed it to. All in all a great experience 😁

Absolutely outstanding…. The waitress (who used to work in care) was unbelievable, an absolute credit to you..!! Couldn’t do enough for my disabled dad, went above and beyond for us…very rare thing here in York as the disabled are not looked after but here, she can’t do enough for you. Food was delicious, drinks served promptly and service with a smile every single time. Thank you for a lovely end to our day. Highly recommend x

Brilliant little pub. Food was awesome, we shared the wings and ordered the steak & burger for mains. Staff were lovely and fully accommodating for requests we had. Will happily come back next time we’re in York

Pretty dismal meal, roast peppers more like picked up of the floor squashed roast peppers....chilli jam could fit on a pin head, and halloumi if they cut it any thinner it would dissappear....ye sorry won't be back...

Myself and wife had a meal last night I had fish and chips batter was burnt wife had scampi again dark brown as a past fish and chip owner I would recommend changing the oil staff super

Absolutely rotten! Food was disgusting. Got two steak pies, the pastry was so hard you smash a window. The meat in it was grizzle. The chips were as dry as a bone. Wouldn’t recommend. No idea why folk have gave this place good reviews! Waste of money.

Went here for lunch with my partners parents, lovely atmosphere to watch the football and the food was great pub food. A huge thank you to Louise and the lovely cleaners who handed my partners wallet in he dropped. Lovely honest community at the Golden Lion.

Live sport on large screens placed in great locations set up so you could see 2 sports at once football and darts on Thursday 09/05/24 just let down with no sound service excellent.

We visited the Golden Lion twice during our visit to York. We enjoyed lunch (steak sandwich and halloumi wrap) and enjoyed some homemade cakes which were next to the bar raising money for Macmillan. We popped in later that night when we heard music pumping out courtesy of DJ Russ! It was a really great atmosphere and all the staff are great and friendly.

Lunch was perfect, service above and beyond, I have a chilli allergy which most places dont highlight. The staff were on the ball when asked if my order had chilli, turned out it did have a chilli glaze so we changed the order, the checked again and the chutney also had chilli so offered other condiments that were chilli free. We will definitely visit again when we're in York.

Poor service. I came to visit York and lost 3 hours waiting for the food to come. Don't wast your time to eat here just drink and go.

Nice little pub spoiled by having to wait 45 mins for 2 sandwiches and a bowl of chips, the one waitress was off with us, hence 2 star service, but the manager was polite and apologetic. Saying the food possibly went to the wrong table..how? as all tables numbered, there was a 40 min wait on food again how? when I was the 4th customer to order. When the food did arrive it was OK. The manager offered us a full refund but as we had eaten and she had apologised we only took a discount.

Went to the golden lion for a meal. It didn't disappoint. The food was lovely and the staff very friendly and helpful. There was a good selection of drinks and enough choice on the menu. Prompt service without feeling rushed. Reasonably priced.

Great pub brings back memories of meeting future wife in 1972 on Christmas Eve then named the 1900.

Amazing find, I go to greene king pubs a lot at home and happened to come across this little beauty. Definitely recommend to people visiting York

Just popped in for a drink. The girl behind the bar was so friendly and let us try a couple of ales before we decided which one to have.

Wonderful food at reasonable prices. Very friendly and helpful staff. Definitely would come again. Good Vegan selection.

First Pub I visited in England, Pie and mash was very good and I liked the liveliness of the bar itself. Fun place to come in the night.

I had an evening meal here, as the place had an nice atmosphere. You pay for your food & drinks, when you order. Get there early evening; because when I arrived they had to cross off several items from the menu, as it's very popular. The meal was barbecue chicken with a beer cheese sauce, with accompanying tomatoes & two onion rings. It had a strong barbecue taste, but the beer cheese tempered it out. I found the soft drink (large coke - pint) a bit pricey; wandering if it had a unlimited refill policy.

Large, one roomed inn in the heart of York. Staff were warm and welcoming and our food and drink spot on.

Visited on Wednesday afternoon for lunch. Ordering was simple at the bar, service was quick, food arrived in a great time and tasted great, staff very polite also, an enjoyable experience Thank you

The first time we ate here I gave it 5 stars and was looking forward to coming again. The 2nd time we ordered the steak pie again. It looked amazing. But when I cut into it there were only 2 decent size pieces of meat and 3 tiny pieces. The flavour was still good but definitely not value for money. Very disappointed.

We had sharing dishes and they were a good size. Staff are lovely.

Not even worthy of one star. Ordered four adult meals and five Childrens meal deals , main course , desert and drink £4.99 was told the children couldn’t have an ice cream because I didn’t ordered it with the main even though I’d payed for it. On top of this we stood for at least 10 minutes waiting for a member of staff to show up when we arrived.

Greene King prices are never competitive always expensive. Atmosphere was flat. Beer was average. Avoid and go elsewhere

The pub had a very friendly atmosphere. It didn’t take long to get served, and the lady that served me was very friendly and helpful. The food was reasonably priced and delicious. I’ll definitely come back.

The Golden Lion in York is in the city centre, near the Shambles, but it is absolutely not a touristy pub. It is a large pub with a simple, large square bar. The decor is old-style with all flooring, walls and furniture in dark wood, with a few decorative glass panels to break it up. Style-wise it is a sports bar with multiple televisions, which is why I came in. Although clearly in need of a refurb, it was clean and tidy and the service from the young lady behind the bar was friendly and efficient. I was particularly impressed that, although she seemed to be on her own, she kept all tables clear and spotlessly clean. I’d be more than happy to come in again.

We have eaten in this Pub on many occasions, normally for Lunch, but chose to go for an evening meal. We were pleased with the choice of food on the menu, the staff were very accommodating as we required a high chair, and they were very helpful throughout. Food came out hot and even though it was the busiest month of the year, the staff remained pleasant throughout. Would really recommend this Pub

i visited the golden lion over the xmas period and the pub was busy but still had a welcoming and friendly atmosphere when i entered i went to the bar where i was served quickly the bar person was friendly and had good knowledge as i knew i wanted a gin but not sure what kind i went with there recommendation and really enjoyed it .we then went to find a table to order food which was delivered to us quickly and to a high quality i would definitely recommend the golden lion to anyone visiting york it is a hidden gem .

It's incredible how you can take a city centre pub in a nice building and suck all the atmosphere out of it (and the flavour from the beer, which might be a blessing on second thoughts).

It was a very busy pub. Ordered meals. One was wrong so me and my partner ate seperatly. Asked for more gravy took 10mins which by that time my partner had nearly finushed. Gravy was cold when it came. Was over charged. Before we left i complained to the bar staff, said in a nice way if we hadnt paid for the meals i would of refused to and i wouldnt unfortunatly go there again. Very dissapointed.

went with a group of six girls and the staff were rude and hostile towards us. We felt judged and discriminated for being younger (19/20years), we were quiet and kept ourselves to ourselves but felt like we were doing something wrong for being in the pub, eyes rolled at many times by multiple female members of staff. We asked politely for some straws and they rudely pointed over to the bar with continuous rolling of eyes and no smile. do not recommend if you want to feel welcomed.
