Ooh, nice little gem of a place, staff very nice. Food is good quality and service very fast, although it wasn't busy so that may be why.

This is a really great little pub in the middle of York, and is my go-to when I'm visiting and want to go somewhere for lunch. The food is really good - on my last visit, I had the steak sandwich which was really tasty. The staff are always friendly and helpful, and it has a "old school pub feel" to it which I really enjoy. One one occasion we had to wait 30 minutes for our food, but the staff told me before I ordered and were really apologetic, so I didn't mind that. A very typical English bar in its atmosphere. The service is very good (knowing that you have to go order at the bar yourself). We have ordered the menu in which we opted for the sandwich option. I ate the cod which was very good although it was small in quantity. We accompany it with some fried potatoes. Highly recommended!

Went in to get a meal told the barman that I was a coeliac, he gave me a menu told to take a table then order a bar when ready. Picked what I wanted went to order told didn't have, so when I asked what do you have gluten free told nothing really as ran out. Why not tell me before giving me menu. Wasted my time. Absolutely useless.

Another pub pub! I live them! Some cracking beers on offer! The bar was busy, with no seating...so we went out on the sun terrace, its great up there! We didn't have food as we were on a liquid diet, but it looked and smelt great! A must visit pub if you are in York and in need of some refreshment!

Popped in for a drink, sat on the roof top terrace in the sunshine, lovely piny, lovely staff 🙌🏻

I think it's the only place in York where you don't have to order sour dough bread, thick farmhouse bread sorted good quality food and reasonably priced.

Only in there with friends for a quick drink,( no food) was bought but had a lively atmosphere, quickly served at the bar for drinks, pleasant bar staff, clean pub .

Booked a table on a Sunday morning for lunch later the same day only to be told on arrival that bookings made on a Sunday are not valid. On arrival the pub was full of folk watching a football match on a loud tv and with little space to sit down. We decided as a result to leave and found a much nicer Nicholsons pub, with a far more pleasant atmosphere and great food further up Goodramgate. Needless to say we will not be returning.

Had a large family get together and they catered for 11 of us when it was busy, no problem and reserved our seats in advance.

Had the fish and chips and they were excellent. Great taste, big portion and piping hot. Nice traditional pub with lovely friendly staff.

My meal was good, wife's not so good. I had the Steak and ale pie 😋 my wife had the Chicken and bacon sandwich... Not much chicken or bacon 😔

Hemos visitado este pub regularmente desde 2018 y siempre disfrutamos de sus aros de cebolla rebozados y papas fritas, pero al visitarlo hoy nos dijeron que ya no los sirven, ya que tienen un nuevo chef que no los cocinará y no hay bocados de lite ni siquiera un tazón de papas fritas. ¡No volveré a visitarte!

Welcoming pub, good atmosphere. Our food was really good, not your average pub food. Prices were reasonable and the staff were friendly and attentive. Would definitely go back here when we visit York again.

The Golden Lion is a nice cosy traditional pub. There is a good selection of beers, larger and cider, including three hand-pulled cask conditioned real ales, greene king abbot ale, IPA, and Theakstons old percular. The staff are very friendly i haven't tried the food as it was very busy when i called in but it's a greene king pub and the food is usually quite good. The pub is dog friendly.

Would not put anyone off visiting.

OK for a chain pub, 4 Cask Ales and loads of fizzy stuff.

Very busy on Saturday night they have sports on plus music so you find yourself surrounded with people that are just shouting at each other as you can't hear each other. Wouldn't recommend the food

Great pub. Friendly staff. Good service at the bar. A little too packed and noisy for us when we first went in but numbers reduced later on. It was the Christmas period so to be expected, York was very Judy!

Popped in for a quick visit for some snacks, I ordered the smashed potatoes and fries. They were incredible! The staff were super friendly and helpful too! I will definitely be returning :)

Muy acogedor y agradable personal. Baños limpios y bien mantenidos. Nosotros donde solo en una visita de un día amd después de buscar en Google encontramos el león de oro ofreciendo almuerzos de domingo. Esto es justo lo que necesitábamos en el frío y húmedo domingo. Al ordenar nos dijeron que ya no hacían cenas de domingo. Esto fue decepcionante, ya que elegimos este pub basado en el menú onile, sin embargo, la comida que conseguimos era encantador y volveríamos. Simplemente actualiza tu menú en línea ¿otros saben que no hay almuerzos de domingo en el futuro?

We came to York for two days and we came here twice to have lunch, delicious food, great prices, super cozy and really nice people :)

Nice place but honestly we got a little cold, almost enough to wear a jacket. The drinks were good but a little expensive

The Golden Lion in York has a tired and dated feel. While some might find this adds to its charm given its age, it’s not what you’d typically expect from a Greene King establishment. We had booked a table in advance, and it was ready on arrival, which was a positive start. However, the menu seemed reduced compared to other Greene King pubs, offering fewer options. I chose the pie and chips, which was a mixed experience. The pie itself was good, though the crust was a little hard and there were only a few pieces of meat inside. The gravy served on the side was a highlight, pairing well with the small portion of chips provided. The atmosphere was far from ideal. A football match was playing, creating a noisy environment with children shouting and screaming throughout, making it difficult to relax. While the pub may appeal to those seeking a traditional vibe, the limited menu, average food, and noisy ambiance made for a disappointing visit. Improvements are needed to make it a venue worth returning to.

Otra noche fantástica en este vibrante pub con DJ Russ en el decs. El personal del bar trabaja muy duro para mantenerse al día con los clientes y nunca necesita esperar mucho tiempo. También tienen la maravillosa habilidad de saber a quién se va a servir a continuación. DJ Russ tenía gente bailando en las calles. Tiene un Witt natural, es un artista brillante y juega lo que la gente pide. La pista de baile siempre está llena, Nunca he tenido una mala noche cuando ha estado en él. Un portero en la puerta garantiza que la gente esté segura por dentro y por fuera. Nunca he visto problemas en el pub ya que está bien administrado. Gracias a todos por otra gran noche 10 / 10

Es con un corazón pesado que tengo que escribir esto con una calificación de 2 estrellas. Aunque el establecimiento me pareció familiar y no me andaré con rodeos, me pareció que el menú para lo que se seleccionó no se ajustaba a la imaginación que esperaba. ¡Whitby scampi con patatas fritas y guisantes! (Imagen. 1 de 1 ) La reacción exagerada del tamaño de la placa no hizo justicia a las pequeñas porciones como se muestra en la foto de evidencia. Descritos como papas fritas gruesas, no son papas fritas gruesas simplemente una bolsa de comida agrícola o allí por igual. Simplemente pon fichas. Diluido con guisantes. Podría ser fácilmente declarado como un chorrito de guisantes mushy. La salsa tártara estaba bien. El servicio de atención al cliente era una tarifa, pero tal vez preguntar a los clientes si les gustaría hielo con su bebida, ya que hace más frío que Islandia en un día de verano.

Didn't eat all though plenty of people were eating. We had drinks only. Would definitely recommend you visit here as reasonable prices. Friendly atmosphere with friendly staff

Couldn’t visit the pub at 4:45pm because we had an under 18 with us. Update following reply: We had a table with friends who were already at the pub, we informed the staff of this. Plenty of other establishments to spend your money at.

Nice warm bar for a light lunch. The beef sandwich was a tad light on the beef, chips were nice. Staff friendly and nice and warm on a chilly day in York.

Saturday was not a good day to this place- food wasn't worth the long wait.

Very busy at 5 30pm. We booked a table online but staff were not aware of the booking. We were lucky enough to have a free table available for 3 of us and our dog. Excellent service. Thank you.

A pleasant Greene King pub with a Cask Marque. Choice of four real ales. Madge got me on Theakstone's Old Peculiar. A very historic ale. One roomed downstairs bar with lots of TV's. There is an OK roof terrace. Food served but we just ate so cannot comment.

Great dog friendly pub only had drinks as all the turkey dinners had gone. Warm and welcoming pub and had a constant stream of customers.

Un pub que nos pareció auténtico y agradable. Además de tener mucha historia detrás. Cenamos un sandwich de pollo y como no, un Fish and Chips. Todo correcto. La señorita, detrás de la barra, era muy efectiva en su trabajo.

Pub was busy & had a nice olden atmosphere to it, dark ambiance & old fashioned decor. Food was delicious, we had a range of starters, fish & chips & club sandwich, all of which was delicious. The dumplings were too dry & the waitress immediately offered me a dessert as I didn't eat the dumplings. Excellent attention from service staff & very warm staff. Highly recommended if you like us were walking around York Minster & the Shambles & needed a spot of lunch!

Ordered the BBQ Chicken which was wrapped in streaky bacon, smothered in beer cheese with crispy onions served with vine tomatoes, chips and onion rings also had a pint of Theakston's Old Perculier. What can I say about the establishment: A warm welcome awaits, staff are friendly, polite and very attentive. Atmosphere in the pub was inviting with low music playing which is not intrusive if you are trying to enjoy a conversation with friends. Golf was playing on the TV (no sound) therefore a nice addition if you are a sports fan. The food was fabulous and cooked to perfection. I would highly recommend this establishment and you will not be disappointed with either the warm welcome, atmosphere, food or drinks on offer.

Never had food here but I saw the plates and the food looked ok Service is good, staff attentive and the drinks are a really good price for York Atmosphere: well it is always busy with lots of people because the price is good for things, so atmospheric.

The food wasn't very good. I ordered whole tail scampi chips and peas. What I got was no peas, tiny bite size pieces of scampi,the chips were nice my grandaughter wasn't impressed with her food and left most of hers 😕

Great pub . Had a couple of drinks and some lunch.. Hannah served us at our table..she was attentive and smiley and happy... an asset to the pub... Good food. Good drinks.

Lunch with a friend, we both enjoyed our food, & the r'ose was exceptional, we will Definitely return will recommend, to others, the staff were good, too.

Good old fashioned pub, didn't have food because there was a 45min wait, but the food being served to customers looks appetising with plenty food on plates. Plenty draught beers to choose the tvs were showing the sky sports.

Was I your pub on sat the 7th of Sept, at around 2.30pm,we got our drinks and sat in a corner near the window. When we sat down there was a couple with 2 gray hounds dogs, when we looked down one of the dogs was urinating on the floor in front of us, and our feet was in the dog s urine, the people around we noticed was having meals, I know that it is a dog friendly pub but having this happen in front of people eating to me is a not nice,myself I just think it's a health issue, we're food is been served and dogs are urinating on the floor while people are eating is a no no for me, as we were leaving a girl did come with a mop bucket and mop to clean it up, this should not be happening.

Popped in on Saturday for a quick bite to eat. Was very busy so had to wait for a table, staff were all really friendly and bubbly. It's not the cheapest place in York but the atmosphere was buzzing, drinks were great and the Nacho's were just what we needed.

We visited this pub on a Saturday afternoon. It's a great place but, they allow dogs and we were sat next to a couple who had a greyhound and a whippet. The dogs were urinating all over the floor causing big puddles, this should not be allowed in anywhere that serves food. The ladies toilets were also an absolute disgrace, dirty and smells of sewerage. We won't be returning.

Awesome pub, great ambiance, and great food too.

Visited last week. After hours walking round York me and my daughter needed a rest and decided to get some food. It smelt damp, seemed ‘sticky’ but it was relatively busy so sometimes this means it’s a good pub. I was so disappointed. £14 each for a variation of hunters chicken with beer cheese (which we personally didn’t like). The chicken breast seemed small with a small handful of chips & 2 small onion rings. Really overpriced. The bar staff and waitress were lovely tho.

Lovely pub, had lunch special could have a bit more steak on sandwich but was tasty. This is an American writing review where everything comes super-sized! Cheers!

We planned on eating here but when our round of drinks took 20 minutes, we went elsewhere. We had three drinks of which one came in a dirty glass and one was the wrong one. It wasn’t very busy so this shouldn’t have taken that long.

Louis & kirstie were absolutely delightful 😊. Smiling & very helpful. A big thank you to them. The steak & ale pie was beautiful, would have liked real mash but I ate it all. My girlfriend had scampi and enjoyed it to. All in all a great experience 😁

Absolutely outstanding…. The waitress (who used to work in care) was unbelievable, an absolute credit to you..!! Couldn’t do enough for my disabled dad, went above and beyond for us…very rare thing here in York as the disabled are not looked after but here, she can’t do enough for you. Food was delicious, drinks served promptly and service with a smile every single time. Thank you for a lovely end to our day. Highly recommend x

Brilliant little pub. Food was awesome, we shared the wings and ordered the steak & burger for mains. Staff were lovely and fully accommodating for requests we had. Will happily come back next time we’re in York

Pretty dismal meal, roast peppers more like picked up of the floor squashed roast peppers....chilli jam could fit on a pin head, and halloumi if they cut it any thinner it would dissappear....ye sorry won't be back...
