What a dirty and disgusting premise, crap staff, dirty room, bathroom full of mould, room smelt damp and of smoke, I would never stay here again I would rather sleep rough.

This place needs to be condemned, filthy. I feel like the pub has been taken over by new owners because Reading the reviews of six months ago everything seemed nice. We turned up at 3.10 and was told our room wasn't ready and we'd we like a drink while we waited which we had to pay for, another 20 mins and our room was ready, as soon as we walked through the door it smelt like death, mould all over shower towels dirty, rubbish still in bin and someone else's clothes in the wardrobe, wouldn't stay here again if you paid me, good job it was just for 1 night, left as soon as we woke up

This is a local pub with rooms, myself and my daughter stayed for 3 nights and liked the place. If you want room service, reception on call etc it's not for you. Keys are behind the bar...and that's it. Access is via some outside stairs (fire escape) and the music can be loud, but we enjoyed it. Two lovely ladies behind the bar, always accommodating and welcoming.

We stayed for 3 nights and found the room dirty which had not been hoovered and cleaned for some time. The bath room was disgusting and covered in mould and a health hazard. Under the bed there was food residue. Access was via a fire escape which was not easy to walk up and down and would be found difficult if not impossiblefor a disabled person. I would not recommend this accommodation. Also, some drunken occupants with fifthly language who were very noisy from 11.30pm until around 4.00am as the walls are paper thin and we finally got to sleep about 5am. Although this is not the fault if the owners they are not on site between the hours of 11.00pm and 3.00pm and uncontactable.

Nice room (number 2), comfy beds, good location and lovely towels ….. that’s the good points. The shower was DISGUSTING…. Spoke to the bar staff on the day of arrival who was already aware. The reviews from months ago say the same. How difficult is it to bleach and clean it? The cleaning team need replacing ASAP …. Would not advise anyone to book here until this issue is resolved

The room was awful! The room was above the bar and we could hear the guests downstairs talking and laughing. The room was up a set of fire escape stairs,so not wide enough for suitcases. The shower door would not shut and the shower would fill with water. Also the shower was moldy. I won't be returning.

We were due to stay for two nights but left after one. We found the room was dusty and had not been hoovered. The room was disgusting. The dog found a sock from the previous occupant plus some discarded tablets under the bed. Fortunately I got them off him before he could eat them. The shower was full of mould. Access was via a fire escape which was tricky to walk up and down in the dark. I would not recommend this accommodation. Also, the other occupants were very noisy we finally got to sleep about 3 am. ( although I appreciate this is not the fault of the owners)

First time I've been in since the re-opening. Tuesday night quiz lasted all of 10 minutes. Seemed like it was an unwanted chore for the quiz mistress & the lad behind the bar. May as well convert downstairs to hotel accomodation too because people won't go where they don't feel appreciated.

Stayed here for 4 nights. Absolutely a lovely and convenient place. Ample of parking, very clean room with all necessary items provided ( dryer, shampoo, body wash, tea ,coffee, towels) . Despite its above a pub its very quite. TV in the room with free wifi. Heating is On and you can regulate as you wish. It really is cosy and warm ,so we turned the heating off at night time.Staff at the pub are very friendly and helpful. We will definitely stay here again, only wish the mattresses were a bit more comfortable.

Pros: cheap for York, pub parking not far from the town center Cons: Well… if you find appealing dirty toilet bol ( brown marks), hairs on the mirror and in the shower that do not belong to you, and a carpet’s perfume of beer with a hint of pee, this is the place for you We were disgusted about the room! You should make check the cleanliness of that structure because it is very low and dirty! Pee smell and beer smell in the room and carpet! Unfortunately it was too complicated for us to move out and we would have lost too much time but it was our worst accomodation in our lives! And we travel a lot!

Small carpark at the rear about 10 spaces next to a busy road so no parking out front Check in at the bar ,to get to the rooms you have to go outside up a steep metal staircase at the back of the pub, unsure why there's a food container(someone's pack lunch)next to the door !? Room (2) twin room there's enough room to move around in shower room small with a massive step to get in to the shower, shower was good . Bed OK, gap around the curtains and the display lights shine though ! Still hear the road though the window and also when people walking around in the next rooms . Especially the main door slams shut as people don't know how to close quietly! WiFi not tested, not sure if they were doing food in the pub ? So ordered a takeaway was feeling rough so stayed in the room . No bin in the room the last person's coffee contents still on the tea tray ,no plug in the sink . No breakfast included Unsure if you could add on as no info . Would I stay again? unfortunately probably a NO Would I recommend if it were a tad cheaper then yes definitely good for workmen stopover .

Plusses first, warm room especially on the coldest weekend so far this year. Quiet considering we are above a pub, staff were friendly. Plenty of pillows. Plenty of tea/ coffee. And was offered more if we needed it. We had a small double and a single bed in the room. All that said, the bed wasn't the most comfortable, it was ok. The shower was ok but not the most powerful. The bathroom was very small no heating. Bathmat was very slippy had to be careful out of the shower. The towels were very thin. The room on the whole was very basic, not the cleanest tbh.The rooms were accessible through a fairly dimly lit car park at the back of the pub with a metal fire exit staircase also dimly lit. As we had frost we had to be careful going up/down as it was a bit slippery. No breakfast available, but there was food although we did not have food there.

I’ll start with the good points … car parking and close to York. We left the car had a lovely afternoon in York, checked in went to have a lie down and found blood stained sheets, full of someone’s hair and crumbs off food. The toilet had stained wee all over it and the bath and sink hadn’t been cleaned. There was also the last persons rubbish and some belongings left. The floor hadn’t been hoovered i didn’t dare walk anywhere it was rank! The staff, although polite Weren't all that bothered about the state of the room nor were they overly apologetic… they couldn’t care less. The bar area smelt of wee and the whole place just made me itch and feel dirty. It’s not a nice experience and we came home early which was a shame as I was really looking forward to the York Christmas markets. The blokes did change the sheets But I went round with antibacterial wipes and could tell that it hadn’t been cleaned in a blooming long time! I’m hoping for a full refund but reading the other reviews this seems the norm. Please do not book here they should not be operating a hotel.

Our 11 year old loves the chicken goujons - hand made, very generous and cooked in crispy, yet light batter along with the hand cut chips. Two sandwiches (which are served with chips) and scampi completed our order. Plates were emptied!!! Enough said. One of each Theakstons - served perfectly. We stayed in The Nags Head for one night of which I've written a separate review re the B&B side of the pub but as we had meals in the pub I'm writing a further review. We had our lunch here on arrival and the food and beer was very nice indeed. I think prices were about right for a pub that serves homemade food. We had a further meal on the same evening but unfortunately I couldn't get the meal I'd ordered as they'd run out of burgers and could only supply one meal of burger and my partner snapped that up. I was a bit surprised as it was only 7pm. Anyway, I had a ploughman's instead and it was adequate. I had a taste of my partners burger and it was lovely. Pity I missed out on that. I feel I have to knock a point off for burgergate as I couldn't understand why more hadn't been made during the day, for the evening, as burgers are always popular on menus everywhere. Very strange. As an aside. The breakfast we had before we left was lovely but as I recall it wasn't on the menu ie All day breakfast (bacon, eggs etc). It's very popular in my area in the pubs and I'm sure if the pub put it on the general menu it would go down a storm.

We had Sunday lunch at The Nags Head yesterday somewhat by chance, having planned to eat at a pub down the road but arrived to find they had a Christening party and were fully booked. I enquired inside The Nags Head and was told they did Sunday lunch and had plenty of seating, so we decided to go there instead. At first I was a bit apprehensive about what we would find, as we walked in past numerous empty tables (at 1pm on a Sunday) and could only see one other party dining there, but we ordered anyway and the staff were friendly. The food far surpassed my expectations. I had the roast beef and it was lovely. The meat was tender and juicy, the roast potatoes were crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle, the mash was buttery, the yorkshire puds were homemade and delicious, the veg wasn't overcooked and the gravy was incredibly flavoursome. Other members of the group had chili con carne, fish and chips, and steak and ale pie. All enjoyed their meals and cleared their plates, and I was told that the steak and ale pie was particularly tasty. The chips looked incredible!I have no idea why the pub was so quiet, and it's a shame that this meant the atmosphere was dead, but I will be dining here again.

Such a nice place, so welcoming and warm. Just a few touches that need addressing. NO hooks for coats.....am i to toss my coat on the floor? crumple it in a corner? Wine is standard measure, no large, not small. its 175ml or bottle....and the glasses are measured glasses....I know its petty but I like a big glass in my hand and weather its a little or a lot of wine in the glass that is how I like it.......I dont understand why any pub pays for measured wine glasses these days when they are so un appealing in the paw......buy a few cheaper nicer looking unmeasured glasses and a wine measure instead.....And on the wine, its not cold......I like my red warm and my white freezing, no, i do not want ice in my wine, i just want it to have been chilled properly, if it doesnt mist the glass, its warm. and putting it in a red hot glass doesnt help......just saying. However, brill food. Ray from the kitchen (and the bar) is lovely and food is like going home for a hug. Its just a shame is seems rather....unfinished.Top renovation though, looks grand.

The lunch menu was wide and varied and offered exceptional value for money. Starters from around £3 and a wide variety of mains from home made lasagne and chilli con carne through to lamb shank and sirloin steaks. The double fried hand cut chips were to die for! I was impressed with the carvery here, on a Wednesday night. Only 5 Pounds for: yorkshire puds, veggies (about 4 choices), and 3 choices of meat (turkey, pork and beef). Gravy, sauces, etc. The pub is cozy and the bar staff are friendly and welcoming.Would I go again?. Yes, I'm sure that I will be dropping by the next time I'm in York.

Asked for NO horseradish and for cranberry on my wrap, received what looks like a triple portion of horseradish and no cranberry. Ordered a pot of apple sauce and didn’t get that either

Stood at the bar for 15 minutes, constantly being ignored people getting served ahead of me. Another customer commented on it to me. Absolutely shocking service. Never again!

Been here a few times over the years. Now a Nicholson's pub. Walk into the covered courtyard from Goodramgate and you have a choice of two bars, one to the left and one to the right. Both have a good real ale selection. Very busy early evening a week before Christmas. Ic and Flic found space on a large table with people moving up for us. A good pint of Golden Doubloon from Laine brewery. A lovely large pub with a restaurant area for more formal dining.

The maltings it a large traditional pub. There is a good selection of beers, lagers, and cider, including hand pulled cask conditioned real ales. The cask conditioned ale i tried first was a stout and not in good condition, so i changed it for a bitter, which was better. The pub is featured in the camra good beer guide.

Many keg ales out of stock. Several menu items off. Hour long wait for food so we didn't eat.
