My wife and I went here for a meal, for my birthday, on the recommendation of a friend. Wow, what an amazing place. From the outside, it has a really warm and enticing atmosphere that makes you want to go there for a drink. We booked in advance, and that is worth doing. The restaurant is located in the cellars of the old Judges Chambers, and this makes for a real quirky and cosy place. The staff were absolutely brilliant and nothing was too much trouble for them. The menu was making you want everything on it, but in the end, I settled for a meat platter for 2, then the shredded beef burger, and finally apple crumble and custard. All with a beautiful bottle of red wine. As it was my birthday, I was surprised by the chef with a plate of brownies with happy birthday on them. I will end this by saying that this has to be one of the nicest restaurants, with the most lovely staff I've been to in a while. I highly recommend anyone to go here, you will love it.

Lovely location in the section of York with a very pleasant covered outdoor seating area which you can sit in and watch the world go by. The downside is the alcoholic beverage choices available. I can only assume that the pub is run by a teetotaler as in a city with a lots of microbreweries to select these insipid alcoholic drinks is frankly criminal.

booked in advance lovely building very noisy place earlier on went to bar and was told to wait after being ignored for a while decided we would order a drink whilst we waited at the side of a very busy bar - shame that wasn't actually offered when we arrived... I think it was the manager who then served us (lady potentially eastern European) - did not want to put the drinks on the table 'as you don't have a table' so how could she do that. Not our problem / fault after waiting for 10 minutes. Her attitude was brusque / rude and did not reflect my expectations of a restaurant that was highly recommended to us by a local We eventually were put in a small conservatory area right at the back - was an OK spot with a good view of the 'said manager' having a heated discussion with another customer for a long time - boy he was not happy and it looked like a battle of wills food was good but small portion - may have just been my selection. Had the sea bream and boy was it tiny - placed on top of 1.5 new potatoes and the smallest amount of wilted spinach. Good job my appetite is not massive Had cheese board for pudding - looked good at first glance but the cheeses (esp the oak smoked cheddar and brie) weren't great quality and all cheeses had been chopped into 3 - to make them look more I guess...? It was OK but the cheese let it down.. e.g. brie very firm and not at room temperature / not tasty The other serving staff were brilliant - but the 'manager' totally let this place down. 100% task focussed with no thought to customers which in a customer facing place is bad news surely... You are completely lacking a front of house who looks after your bookings and customers customers. Its a busy bar but given your compettition in York you might want to up your game I wouldn't bother returning

Was really excited to try this place for a spot of breakfast as we were staying in York for the weekend. We had made a booking and duly went into the reception area. Stood around for around 5 minutes, rang the bell, nothing. A housekeeper was walking through reception and asked if she could help and she said that we needed to go downstairs for breakfast. Would have been nice for a meet or greet at the point of entrance, but never mind... We then walked into the restaurant area, the woman serving had her back to us and just told us to pick a table. We did that and then a very pleasant young man took our order when another blonde haired woman accosted him about where we were sitting and whether we were guests. The altercation made us feel very uncomfortable as we had made a reservation and were paying guests. Both women were rude and had an air about them. They need to take a leaf out of their younger colleague's book on how to treat customers. A smile can go a long way - even half a smile would have been nice and some pleasantries. Service aside, the breakfast was excellent and very enjoyable. The service would put me off going again though - plenty of other amazing eateries in York to go to.

Sat down outside with family last Wednesday lunchtime, the place was quite busy but by no means full, were ignored by waiting staff (we managed to collar one for a menu, which took a couple of goes). As we were being ignored, after ten minutes we decided to move to the inner circle bit at the front, & were ignored again (we managed to talk to a few different staff members who said someone would come over), but after twenty minutes of waiting & trying to make eye-contact (the waiting staff seemed to be excellent at avoiding this), we decided to leave it & go elswhere. A shame as the food (when it appeared from the kitchen for those lucky customers who weren't being ignored) looked good. Expected more from a city-centre restaurant.

At this price I expect better quality. We had the barrier-free room with a separate entrance. The room is nicely decorated and well equipped. But it wasn't completely clean. In addition, the entrance to the staff rooms is directly in front of the room and so you are not undisturbed and when we went to breakfast there were delivery boxes piled up in front of the entrance. The service is friendly but cold and distant. The breakfast wasn't good. The location is very good because it is close to the train station and centrally in the city. But that also means that it is not quiet at night. Here you could ensure better insulation of the windows, walls and doors. I didn't sleep a wink the second night. Because there's a club around the corner and nobody seems to mind drunk groups standing on the street and screaming. All night. In addition, the house is noisy and I can hear every step across the room. You could even hear the squeaking of the desk chair in the next room. There are plus points for the fact that we had yoghurt and crown flakes as well as to-go cups for coffee available because of our early departure.

Caesar salad is £15, £17 with chicken added. I ordered it with chicken, my mum without. Her salad was a lot of lettuce, one egg cut in half and some anchovies. When we ordered, we got asked if we wanted to remove the anchovies which would have left her with essentially nothing as a meal. No croutons, no parmesan, not even more than a single egg. Absolutely shocking for the price. I added the chicken which at least made it more of a meal, but it was very bland and quite fatty/textured

Our room had a really uncomfortable bed. Myself and my partner did not sleep well at all for the 2 nights that we stayed. The mattress was sunken on one side and didn't give us the support we needed. We attended a family wedding, and the staff on the day were excellent. A special thank you to Bella, who looked after us and kept the children of our party entertained, we couldn't of asked for more at all. Bella is definitely a credit to the hotel, and deserves a payrise. The breakfast service wasn't the best. We waited some time for the table to be cleared from the previous customers, I then had to ask for the table to be cleared and then again to order our breakfast. The staff just need to be a bit more attentive, as they didn't realise that we were different people at the table. Overall it was a pleasant experience, but for the money we paid, I would have expected better service at breakfast time.

On arrival there was no one on reception, we had to ring bell 3 times before someone appeared from the depths below. We had booked a character room, Rm12, for one night stay which we discovered was on top floor at end of wing which meant being directed via a maze of stairs up narrow stairways to room. Room was less than described (double character?) We would class it as standard double in many other hotels. the wardrobe door would not close properly with one of the handles loose & only held in with a Philips screw. The bathroom was adequate with a jacuzzi bath & corner shower. The bath did not have any grab handles which would create problems for aged or persons with disabilities should they prefer a bath (my wife needed my assistance to get out of the bath), the plug was not operational (remote type plug with rotating handle) so there was a rubber plug supplied. The extractor fan was not working so we left window open for demisting plus ventilation. The tiling on the floor was missing grouting in quite a few places & what was there was grimy, the radiator had a bottom fitting loose exposing plasterboard behind. My wife visited reception cloaks which was unventilated and stale smelling & noted that systems difficult to flush, if at all, the hand washing facilities seemed to be timed to prevent excess water usage The entrance door handle/lock needs replacing as it is difficult to rotate & open the door. We didn't stay for evening meal as we preferred to eat out. Staff we met were pleasant but obviously not enough on hand. Overall the hotel is what it is, showing its age, but in need of a lot of minor maintenance. It is well placed in the centre of York for all attractions, & according to reception, is busy with full bookings for the coming week.

We had our reception at the judges lodging, a beautiful, well taken care of building, in an amazing location a lovely 8mins away from the registry office through the museum garden. From the our first enquiry the staff were exceptional, we felt very welcomed and taken care of. Tegan, the wedding planner was outstanding. All aspects of the reception were considered and any anxiety was addressed quickly and professionally via email and phone. Generously, we were offered a free tasting menu, upgraded our room and offered our guests a discounted rate with here stay. We felt that everyone working at the Judges lodging put 110% from the general manager, reception, bar, cleaning and kitchen staff. The food on the day was delicious and service impeccable. Paid a lot of money for a two-night stay. Thought we would get what was shown online (quaint, bespoke room with a lovely tub). Was led through the Cellar Bar to rooms out back; 5 feet from drinkers on terrace (no privacy at all), modern room, no Ambiance, shower-only, and a bathroom light that doesn't turn off and no door to block the light. Very disappointed with high price and expectations not met. Can't speak for the lovely looking rooms in the actual building. We had several meals at the Cellar Bar; excellent food and decent prices. Update: The door banging from the kitchen is all day. The exhaust fan is aimed straight at the Rosemary room - it's an awful smell when they are frying fish. The noisy smokers and Cellar patrons makes sleeping challenging. No luck until after 11 p.m. The courtyard foot traffic affords no privacy, so you are in a dark, closed down, room with little natural light. We are looking forward to going home tomorrow.

I had hoped for so much better for my first trip to York and an evening out with work colleagues. I waited at the cellar bar for ages to be served while a team member folded napkins, ignoring me and discussing how many bookings there were. Another team member served somebody and disappeared, leaving me waiting for the only person who was already pulling two pints to serve me. When we sat down nobody came to see if we wanted menus so we helped ourselves. Eventually someone noticed us and took our order. I have to say the vegetarian offering is awful, I ended up with: flavourless red humous with dry pitta bread, hard fried courgette nuggets and a badly dressed side salad. My colleagues were all underwhelmed by their burgers and fries/greasy wedges. It’s not fun having to write reviews like this but our food was overpriced, bland and poorly presented food.

On arrival, one of us had a steak pie, the other a warmed up pork pie. I do not eat pork and luckily, cut open the pie before eating. I was offered an alternative but I refused the offer. My friends steak pie was only warm and too salty. My other friend had the small fish and chips which was a portion cut in half with barely cooked chips and soggy batter. This place will keep going as tourists will continue to eat here once. For us locals, there are many other places to take our custom on a regular basis.

While one group was well served, the other waited for ages to get a menu, water and when asking for a wine list, they got that, the one with 70GBP upwards per bottle. Luckily the other group told us "hey, there is a drinks menu with wine around 35-40 GBP)... by the time they eventually stopped ignoring us, half of the dinner menu was not to be had anymore. The chocolate delice... well there was still enough dark chocalate to cover one but the other had to do without. If the restaurant (on a Friday) had been full, or if you could not calculate because there was no mandatory booking, then one might have understood. But with booking, how could your larder be half empty by 20h30? On a Friday? Really a pity, because we did get something to eat, just not our first choice, and that was delicious! So if you come, come early and bring some patience along. Then you dine well in wonderful rooms.

A terrific little hotel in the centre of York. My partner and I stayed here for 2 nights in early April and we were thoroughly impressed. Our booking was unexpectedly upgraded to a “character room” on the second floor, facing the street directly above the entrance. The bed was large and comfy, and the beautifully designed bathroom featured an enormous bathtub as well as separate shower. The room overall was spacious, cosy, and spotlessly clean. And a complimentary G&T was a great way to be welcomed! Breakfasts (included) were great and all freshly cooked - you can choose from full Englishes, eggs Benedict etc as well as a continental selection. Throughout our stay, we were really impressed by how attentive and thorough the staff were, and when we asked about restaurants in town we got some fantastic recommendations from the team. We highly recommend this B&B right in the middle of old York. Thank you for a great stay!

Chose because of its great location. Over-rated rooms. We stayed in the Clifton suite. No dressing table. Sink plug stuck so could not use. Rickety old bed with summer quilt too cold for March. There are no shelves in the bathroom, so it is difficult to place our wash bags. We ate in the hotel's 1711 restaurant, which was poor. We were given two meat hors d'oeuvres, I don't eat meat, so the waiter said he would replace one with an alternative, but it didn't arrive. The asparagus starter should have been in bearnaise sauce with a poached egg. It came in a prebaked pastry tart with goats cheese and mushroom? It lacked flavour, and the pastry was overcooked. We questioned it, and the waitress checked and apologied as the menu had not been updated! Then they did bring a vegetarian hors d'oeuvre. For mains, we had Sea Trout with Samphire and Jerusalem Artichoke, fish overcooked and sauce poor, there was a raw charred piece of leek too hard to eat. Wine expensive, but we chose a Barolo, so that was good. Service was not managed and run by young, inexperienced staff. It's disappointing for a restaurant that should have been fine dining.

Arrived - checked in - Room was cold -= rang reception - told after a few attempts to get through to someone that we had to push a button and turn a knob ! had to ring again after 30 mins as room was still cold - again took a few attempts to get someone to answer the phone. was told someone would come down and check - he told us the heating was off and would be switched on and would be warm very soon. another 30 mins and radiator still cold - we were booked for a ghost walk and dinner at a local restaurant so we requested a replacement room - which turned out to be 3 floors up from courtyard level on the top floor and I have had a replacement hip and a recent shoulder operation. this was a double room for me and my son so he was not happy. We arrived back at the hotel around 9.30pm and settled to have a drink in the bar when we were urged to go back to our original room and that the heating was now working - so we finished our drinks hastily and went up to the top floor to pack up again and carry our cases back down to the courtyard. the room was warm and I ordered a bottle of wine as it was too much bother to go back to the bar again. I don't believe paying almost £200 was value for money for the room / service we received and when i told the guy on reception on checkout of my ordeal he wasn't sympathetic and proceeded to charge me for the wine with no reduction to the room rate for our considerable inconvenience - so not very happy at all.

The toasted teacake came with no butter or jam, which we had to ask for and then we had to ask for a knife, by this time the teacake was cold. The cheeseboards all contained different amounts of crackers and grapes that were well past their prime. We had to ask for cutlery which we finally got but were thrown on the table and we were certainly an inconvenience when we had to ask again for serviettes. On a plus note, the coffee was nice. Served by a lovely young man who took note of my allergies and checked with the kitchen, he left us with our menus in case i needed to change my choice, it was nice he left all our menus so as to not make me feel self-consciousness being the only one sat with a menu. A lady then appeared and tried to take our order, i explained the young man had gone to check with the kitchen, she then asked what i had ordered and upon telling her she was insistent nothing would have mustard in it, i explained veggie sausages often contain mustard but she was adamant theirs did not. Just as she had finished trying to convince me the young man returned confirming their sausages DID contain mustard. She was clearly annoyed and rather than apologise to me for an action that could KILL somebody she stormed off. We then heard her telling the young man off for leaving the menus, the way she continued to speak to him was totally unnecessary and to be honest pathetic, trying to make herself feel better for HER mistake. The venue is nice, the food was good, the price was as expected BUT the behaviour of this lady means we would not return nor would we recommend it. Some real allergy awareness is needed, some management training wouldnt go amiss either as speaking to staff in such a way is unacceptable and to do it withing hearing distance of customers is appalling.

Lovely greeting from staff and very well looked after, food was amazing and lovely and hot and good portions, we had a magician that came over to the table and he was absolute amazing and made the evening! On the downside tho didn’t like one of the waiters who was working for Judges, he didn’t serve our table but recognised him from the Owner of the Algarve Restaurant, very arrogant, rude obnoxious man and couldn’t believe he was working at Judges and pray that he doesn’t bring down the reputation of Judges as such an amazing restaurant and all round pleasure to dine in. My advice, get rid of him he is bad news as we even witnessed him upsetting the staff and was also rude Steve the Magician. We had a bad experience with him at the Algarve Restaurant in Potters Bar and so have many others so been warned don’t be filled by him! Thank u ❤️

We came on the 15th November for my daughters 21st Birthday. I feel its trying be something it's never going to be , it's extremely expensive for what you get . The food was cold and was served at different times (really confusing). My venison carpachio wasn't thin and was too fridge cold and black garlic purree was a sour and grey . French onion soup greasy and over season and no cheese croute served . The duck main was cold and under cooked and the cabbage parcel was inedible. The food looks like the chef as just copied from a book and his not capable of executing it . There is much better places about for the same price range . Sadly we won't return.. Service was OK but very nervous

We have eaten here many times. All have been really nice. The restaurant system has changed. Unless you book the 1711 you are literally sat in the bar with people drinking around you which was very noisy. The staff however kindly asked if we would like to move to the conservatory as it was quieter which we did. We ordered our food, my husband ordered a burger, unfortunately this arrived raw. We called over the waiter who immediately apologised and took it back to the kitchen. I had finished my meal (which was very nice) long before his came back. When it did come back it was very dry. The waiter couldn’t of been nicer, he took the price of his meal off the bill and also offered us another drink on the house. Quite a disappointing night apart from the lovely waiter who is a credit to this establishment.

Given the glowing articles about the new chef @ 1711 and the exciting 'fusion' fare on offer, we were gobsmackingly disappointed. From the flat (on tap) Coke, horrible Malbec and French Onion soup which more closely resembled cheesy salt water, to the overcooked scallops, we should have foreseen the disaster heading our way.....the 'signature' ox cheek main bordered on inedible and the seafood risotto was lacklustre, small in volume, cold and noticeably absent of seafood - apart from a very unappetising octopus tentacle strewn over the top. It's been a while since I've sent food back, but once told the Chef couldn't even have been bothered to be in attendance at Friday night service, it made sense that the restaurant was completely empty. A lovely Russian waitress was our only saving grace but WOW - the kitchen staff should feel utterly mortified at sending out that food. And at £28.50 on average for a main course it's a costly error to make. WALK ON BY I SAY ;(

We enjoyed catching up with old friends over lunch here. The young waitress was charming and we were well looked after. We could not however get over the cost of £13 .50 for a large glass of red wine - not the best quality I hasten to add! Surely this is well overpriced?!

Went for lunch in the Cellar Bar and had a wonderful experience. The food was excellent and the service provided by Sam enhanced the whole experience. She was professional, courteous and above all very friendly. We have been to Judge's Lodging numerous times, usually for lunch. We sit outside if the weather is nice but, if not, the Cellar Bar provides a very pleasant atmosphere and we have never been disappointed.

This evening, my sister and I enjoyed an excellent meal (a feast really), at the Judge's Lodging restaurant. We found a quiet, comfortable table in the back. The starters we chose: tempura prawns and camembert with flatbread were absolutely delicious. Potato soup for the next course was a perfect way to warm ourselves from the cool fall weather and the entree we chose was the steak, Thawaites ale, and mushroom pie with seasonal vegetables and chive mashed potatoes. The entire dish was cooked and paired to perfection. The only thing better than the food was the service! A special thank you to our wait staff, Connor T., who was incredibly attentive and wonderful to chat with. We would highly suggest stopping by if you are in York. We plan to come back every time we're in town.

Family meal, ordered two starters haloumi fries good portion also the beetroot falafal, embarrassing size of four pieces for £7.50. Chicken bugger not nice, small fish and chips average the steak and ale was good. Service sadly wasn't great, had to chase them up to pay the bill. All in all, a miss for us, with so many places to eat in York we wouldn't go back.

Ordered the chicken bites with fries for my son and the chicken was extremely overdone as were the chips. The chips were also overcooked on the dishes ordered by my wife and I. As a result, after trying one he couldn’t eat any more. Why on earth did the chef allow these out of the kitchen?Shame really as we’ve eaten here before but sadly won’t be going in again.

Not the best experience, we had to ask for the table to be wiped, the young lady behind the bar was VERY rude, " I haven't time to wipe tables, " it's ok we will do it, she slamed through the doors and literally through the cloth, adding that she doesn't get paid to do it. We wiped it ourselves. Prior to this we ordered several drinks one being a bitter lemon, the barmaid didn't know what it was. however the young man was very friendly and quick to clear glasses.

The maltings it a large traditional pub. There is a good selection of beers, lagers, and cider, including hand pulled cask conditioned real ales. The cask conditioned ale i tried first was a stout and not in good condition, so i changed it for a bitter, which was better. The pub is featured in the camra good beer guide.

Been here a few times over the years. Now a Nicholson's pub. Walk into the covered courtyard from Goodramgate and you have a choice of two bars, one to the left and one to the right. Both have a good real ale selection. Very busy early evening a week before Christmas. Ic and Flic found space on a large table with people moving up for us. A good pint of Golden Doubloon from Laine brewery. A lovely large pub with a restaurant area for more formal dining.
