One of the best fish-and-chips I ever had! Really nice pub with cozy atmosphere. They serve Hobgoblin beers, in particular the Wychwood was excellent. Haddock Chips highly suggested.

nice pub overall, but the sunday roast was really disappointing. it came cold and wasn’t really filling, we were still hungry after. 18,50£ for this is way too expensive.

So I promised myself a full English breakfast before I left York, so I popped in here around 11am, just before they finished serving breakfast at 11:30. The breakfast was good, but could have been better in my opinion, but it is difficult when I am used to cooking my own food and have that as a comparison. The beans were sadly cold, and the eggs slightly undercooked, which was disappointing, the bacon was tasty, along with the sausage, mushroom and tomato, however the black pudding was cut so thin that it wasn’t far off resembling a crisp which I couldn’t quite fathom. Overall it was ok, but I’ve had better and I’ve most certainly cooked better, which is a shame, but hopefully they will take this criticism constructively and use it to improve on in the future.

The place is nice and the staff really helpful. I had the fish pie, the portion was generous and the food itself was really good!

What an absolutely fantastic evening after stumbling across this little gem tonight. They had a band playing and they were fantastic. Service was amazing and prices were reasonable.

Elegimos este pub para el almuerzo - principalmente debido a la ubicación - estaba limpio, nuestra mesa cerca de la ventana era soleado y luminoso, y cómodo. Mi marido disfrutaba de su cerveza, y mi shandy era sabroso. Partimos un pastel y estaba tan bueno - mi favorito eran las zanahorias!

Stopped off for lunch during the Ice Trail today. Absolutely delicious meal - pie and mash! Lots of meat and the crust was gorgeous. My only complaint (if any) would be would have liked more veg but would definitely go back!

Siempre pasamos por aquí en nuestras visitas a York y nunca decepciona. La comida era genial! Sándwich de pescado y un par de bocadillos de bar. Servicio encantador y fuego acogedor.

Great pub with good ale and food

Nearly £7 for a flat fake continental lager. I asked if Carling was any better, it wasn't bar man discounted it, but it was still nearly £5 for Carling. It wasn't any better. I think he called me an idiot ( he's right) accidentally too loud. I'll pay whatever for a drink but it should taste and look right, not flat in a dirty glass, it's too much money.

Went Xmas eve. Didn't have food just drinks but staff were friendly and it wasn't crowded

Found this after a search for ‘sports bar’ as we wanted to watch the darts! This was not what I was expecting and it was really lovely inside, beautifully decorated for Christmas, we sat by the open fire. We enjoyed it so much we went back the next night to watch the final.

Seems a nice enough place if you can afford a pint at. £7.00 wow. Lots of places around alot cheaper.i was told its because it's a tourist destination? Yep..so is edinburgh and London!!! Place was quiet for obvious reasons..pub next door £5 a pint.. shop around guys...no need to be fleesed

Fantastic service and honest staff, ordered large fish and chips, paid and went back to the table. The guy who I gave the money to came over to me and gave me £20 back and said that two £20 had stuck together and the food is the best in York *****

A nice pub with good food, but a bit pricey

It's okay but even by York pub prices it's expensive. To age this post when it appears in the archives, over £10 for a pint and a half. Reviewed in 10 years time a bargain but at today's prices less so. Good music selection while we were there though.

Good value for breakfast on a Wednesday morning. Not a great welcome from the girl behind the bar, however the other girl who served us food was cheery and smiling.

We was Christmas shopping and decided to go for food. The pub was warm and welcoming will definitely recommend to family and friends

Average and very expensive. Over £12 for 2 draft beers. It might be in York but not really up to that.

I live in York and have enjoyed many a meal and drink here. I arranged a work drinks and dinner event for 30 people from around the UK and I could not have asked for better service. I especially single out Nikki who went above and beyond in her assistance with organising the event and ensuring the people with allergies and dietary requirements were catered for. Thank you.

Precioso pub limpio y muy bien decorado para Navidad. Mucho ruido desde arriba. Sonaban como niños corriendo. Un poco molesto si quieres relajarte.

We ordered a baked camembert sharing starter which we sent back as it wasn't cooked in the middle, when a replacement arrived it did look like the same one we had returned as the cooked edges had now solidified so only the middle was edible. The sausage and mash main meal was fine.

Madge likes Nicholson's pubs. Not the cheapest (£12.50 for pint of Wainwright and pint of Madri.) Always has a good range of real ale. My Wainwright was excellent. The rooms wrap around the central bar. Seven real ales. Lovely interior and well dressed for the festive season 2024. Small rear beer patio. Couple of TV's and unobtrusive background music. Great location and views of rear end of the Minster. Food, especially pies, looks good. Only my 3rd visit here in many York visits.

Absolutely delicious food, great service from the ladies yesterday and today! We loved the food so much we went back the second time for lunch! The pies were outstanding, fresh, and full of flavours. Great place

First visit to the Cross Keys tonight and was very impressed. The food and drinks were superb, but the service from Nicky and Sam deserved a 5 star review on its own. They were clearly tired and worn out from what had been a very busy day, but still managed to maintain a smile a friendly chat and a very warm welcome to the pub. Overall an excellent first impression, so full credit to them.

Absolutely disgusted in the service of this place woman behind the bar was ignorant serving everyone else but me there was 2 people in front of me after she served them she went to other side of the bar I tried to get her attention after she finished serving she blanked me and went to other side to serve others

Great place to spend an autumn afternoon but food left a bit to be desired. Update 14 Oct. 2022. Have eaten at lunchtime on several occasions and completely nice so comment on food updated as good.

Terrible lighting made it devoid of atmosphere. Think Weatherspoons but more expensive.

Este es nuestro lugar, para reunirnos con la familia, todos viajamos a York un par de veces al año. Nos encanta el carácter del lugar, el personal siempre nos hace bienvenidos, parecen recordarnos. Realmente nos encanta la comida y recomendaría

Vino a tomar una copa y algunos bocadillos en un paseo por la ciudad. Situado cerca del minster y muy céntrico. La comida era increíble, tenía las mordeduras de pollo, nachos y patatas fritas cargadas en el bar oferta de aperitivos, recomendado! ¡Pruébalo si estás en la zona! 🙂

Stayed at the Cross keys in Acomb, place was busy. We ordered food and it came within 20 mins food was nice staff friendly. overall enjoyed our night out.

Nice pub, they serve a decent pint, friendly staff, the food looked good but we'd already booked to eat elsewhere. Definitely worth a visit.

Cask not great. Ordered Wainwrights and a Nicholsons pale. The Wainwrights was served to us flat as anything. Asked for a head to be put on it. Sat down for a few mins and within that time it went flat again to the point it looked like cider. Wish I took a photo. Husbands Nicholsons was "ok but not great". Took Wainwrights back and swapped it for something else. That wasn't great either. So just drank half of it and left. Went to a place near Shambles were it was cold and creamy to the last sip. Might need some advice from them! Shame as this is actually a nice pub.

Staff friendly and welcoming. Quick service and Sky Sports a bonus. Food quality was edible but not worth the prices. Fries were on a par with a well known chain of drive-through restaurants beginning with M. Chicken oily, overcooked and bland. Portion small and a scanty piece of garnish. Lovely pub and atmosphere but food prices should reflect the quality (halved?)

Great food, accomodating staff and right next to York Minster

Bought a pint & a coke. Placed on table and the table was wobbly and the pint went everywhere. Told the bar woman who gave me some kitchen roll & had to pay for another pint🤷Crap customer service

Amazing dog friendly pub! We stopped here for a quick bite to eat and the food was absolutely amazing (especially the mac and cheese). Staff are fantastic and the music was great. We definitely will be back to try the rest of your menu!

Nice Victorian city pub within sight and sound of York Minster with good bar snacks and friendly staff.

We have walked past the cross keys a lot and decided to go in for Sunday lunch. There were four of us and we got the steak and ale pie and sausage and mash and we were pleasantly surprised! Really good service and prices. A really good destination for a no frills Sunday lunch in a great location with a few drinks! It also has sky sports. Will definitely be back

We stopped in here for lunch on our visit to York. We both had a beef rib and brisket pie which was absolutely delicious! Would definitely recommend trying this.

Nice pub and staff lager was spot on.only downside was mens toilet end urinal near window was leaking and pooling in the corner. Apart from that no problem and was able to watch the footy another bonus .

Friendly staff and happy. Charged me to much for a round of drinks, which I didn't realise. Member off staff come over and gave a refund. Very honest well done

The Cross Keys is a grand example of a Victorian corner pub situated on the busy thoroughfare of Goodramgate in full view of the East Wing of The Minster. As a Nicholson’s run establishment it retains all its history while being fresh and modern, although some aspects of the pub have seen better days, especially the toilets. The Main room is a large airy space with plenty of seating but still leaves a good sized standing space at the large L shaped bar. There are TVs in the front room for those that like to partake in some sports, with more seating out of the way around the side and a quiet back room. Out at the back is a small walled courtyard which is partially covered, this is where you get some pretty impressive views of The Minster. But here we come to the main deciding point for the Cross Keys, the 12 hand pumps that adorn the bar which once upon a time served a decent range of cask ales. Not today though, as out of a possible 12 cask lines we were left with only one beer! It would seem they had run out of beer at 5pm on a Saturday! What is a pub without beer? Well a pretty crap one really. What was severed wasn’t great either and the prices will put a real dent in your pocket. I'm not sure what happened to the Cross Keys of late as the other Nicholson's run pubs in York are far superior. We certainly won't be rushing to return here and with such a varied choice of pubs in York I'd recommend finding somewhere else.

Visiting York for a day trip and had an amazing lunch here. The mushrooms on sourdough bread was delicious and plentyfull. Had the chicken and truffle oyster pie and chicken schnitzel for our mains and both were excellent. Highly recommend this pub.

Lovely place to stop into. We ordered side dishes, to fill a gap, nice food. One person on our table needed a bigger meal so ordered a pie dish, which they enjoyed

Was in tonight playing Blood on the Clocktower. The staff were lovely and the pub was delightful.

We did only stop in for drinks as we’d eaten in their sister pub down the road but the drinks were reasonable and a nice friendly welcoming pub We will come in again when we return to York

Popped in for a beer and lunch, great burger, staff helpful ended up staying for challenge cup final. Beer not the cheapest but good none the less would recommend

Right in the centre of York next to the Minster. Went in to watch The Arsenal, they even sell Camden beers so I was in my element. Beer garden has good views of York Minster. Service was fast and staff were very friendly.

A lovely pub which we always call in for a drink at when paying a visit to York. It's right in the centre of the city and it has a lovely beer garden as well as cosy snugs within.

Lovely pub in Central York. We enjoyed a drink here recently. Whilst we didn’t have a meal, we watched a lot of food being served, and I must say it looked amazing. If we had time I would definitely return.

Really nice location, but the food and drinks are way overpriced for what you get. £3.5 for a 250ml 'lemonade' that is room temperature is outrageous.

Had a fantastic time at The Cross Keys with a group of friends! We easily booked a table for 8 on a weekend and enjoyed watching the footy together. We started off with some duck croquettes, which were delicious and served in generous portions. The atmosphere was lovely, and the staff were friendly and accommodating. Looking forward to visiting again when the weather warms up to make the most of their outdoor beer garden. Highly recommend for a relaxed hangout with good food and a great vibe!

My go to place when I want a simple pub meal and the football when in York for an evening. Nothing fancy but an honest pub, service, food and good enough choice of beer.

A very clean well set out pub. Visited a few times and the staff have always been friendly. A really nice place to relax in and perfectly situated near to some of Yorks landmarks. An impressive looking menu that i will definitely try on my next visit.

Typical modern City centre gastro-pub wannabe. Sunday night pub quiz trying to happen when half of the customers are enjoying a family evening meal didn't work. Lovely staff though! I would not recommend this place to anyone with mobility issues, the Gents is up 2 flights of stairs.

Really liked the pub, we both enjoyed our meals of a vegetable cottage pie and the steak and ale pie....both were very good, a nice chilled atmosphere and welcoming & friendly staff.
