The maltings it a large traditional pub. There is a good selection of beers, lagers, and cider, including hand pulled cask conditioned real ales. The cask conditioned ale i tried first was a stout and not in good condition, so i changed it for a bitter, which was better. The pub is featured in the camra good beer guide.

This pub is a "real" pub. Loud music, TVs and juke boxes are not provided. Food service times are limited to lunchtimes only, with slightly longer times at weekends (but not evenings at all). It's only 5 minutes walk from the station and a similar distance from the centre of York. It can become extremely busy in the evenings and at weekends, and is popular with racegoers. It's only quite a small venue, so can get uncomfortably crowded at times. It has an excellent selection of real ales and a decent selection of craft ciders (my choice). It's a good spot for a couple of drinks on the way to somewhere else. We didn't eat, so I can't comment on, or rate, the food.

Great looking pub and inside is quirky. Fantastic pint of Dark & Stormy Stout, but the whole place is let down by the sullen and miserable staff who have no idea how to engage with their customers, or present a pleasant front to what could be a cracking pub. Why they are employed in hospitality is beyond me. 3 stars for a bag of crisps is the highlight other than the beer. The toilets need a good clean too. Not impressed.

This is a down to earth city centre pub that has a lot going for it. Located not far from the train station it is a traditional place that seems to get a good mix of both locals and tourists. We called in after a race meeting and it was ticking over nicely and had a good atmosphere. You really are spoiled for choice, in terms of the drinks available and they do some really excellent beers at pretty good prices. The service is fast and friendly and the inside of the Pub is done out really nicely. This was a beautiful evening though so we decided to go and sit outside in the small beer garden, which is also highly recommended.

Way back when, when I was a CAMRA member about ten or so years ago, I reviewed The Maltings for The Good Beer Guide, and it was a lovely place to drink back then. Now I wouldn't give it the time of day, easily the worst place my group of friends was in last night, and ranking high on York's crappest pub staff. Felt unwelcome from start (pointed sarcastic humour from behind the bar aimed at one of us) to finish (more snide comments). I have been coming to this pub for years. 'Big Sean' and his team are fabulous and have the right mix have real ales/ciders, first class food served in yorkshire portions and a unique traditional British feel atmosphere. This is not a chain, so dont expect childrens stuff or ping 'n ding beige meals. Note: children until 4pm as thats when food service ends, dogs and adults after 4pm. Also says this on the sign! This pub is famous for its CHIPS. Thick cut chips cooked in dripping. Lovely soft inside, really tasty then the piping hot chips are covered in tangy cheddar cheese that just melts in from of your eyes (no microwaves in sight). My daughter and me had one between the two of us cost is £5.80, you will not be disapointed. The do massive sandwhiches with thick meat or cheese and lots of different salads. Cheesy baked vegetables. but their other delacacy is their pies. Made with puff pastry that rises to about 4+ inches served with the famous chips and veg you cant go wrong. But again like everything else it is served in massive portions. They serve lots of real ales, bitters, milds, LPA and of course ciders. This is why they are a CAMRA top/award winning pub. The decor is old doors stuck to the walls then about 10 years ago, they took a wall down to create outside space. Be warned that if you go for just a pint you will want to stay for more...

This was our ( a small group of 6 sober women) first stop after getting off the train. The pub was ok, no complaints there. But that doorman 🙊 The Door man (blonde one) is an arrogant jumped up jobs worth. Chatting to the door man on the way out, one of our group asked him who ironed his trousers for him (they were very creased) she didn't ask this in a nasty way, more of a motherly way. Anyway for this reason only he had us put on pub watch and banned from all the pubs in York! He took our photos and put them on the pub watch group. Thankfully some of the other door men told us the situation but let us in anyway, telling us he is on a power trip and they too agreed he could do with sorting his appearance out (they all had freshly ironed trousers on) Luckily we all found the situation hilarious! But we genuinely fear for anyone that actually does something wrong to this doorman.😱

After a long day of touring the historic sites of York, we selected this pub as it looked so inviting. Lovely pints in hand, we sat at a cozy spot and ordered a boozy steak pie and fish and chips. White the pub wasn't empty, it certainly wasn't busy. It took over an hour to get our food. Others waited ages for theirs, also. Both the pie and fish were outstanding, but they were served with such massive amounts of chips that it was downright wasteful. One serving of chips was more than enough for 3 people. If we had any idea our quick pub lunch would take us over 2 hours, we would have selected another of the wonderful York pubs.

Steak and ale pie - think the stewed steak had been cooked a few days prior and had just been warmed up, certainly was not fresh. We left a lot on our plates. Nobody came to ask if everything was ok and, in spite of the place being quiet, nobody had the courtesy to say “thank you and goodbye”. No atmosphere whatsoever, like a morgue.

My wife and I went here for a meal, for my birthday, on the recommendation of a friend. Wow, what an amazing place. From the outside, it has a really warm and enticing atmosphere that makes you want to go there for a drink. We booked in advance, and that is worth doing. The restaurant is located in the cellars of the old Judges Chambers, and this makes for a real quirky and cosy place. The staff were absolutely brilliant and nothing was too much trouble for them. The menu was making you want everything on it, but in the end, I settled for a meat platter for 2, then the shredded beef burger, and finally apple crumble and custard. All with a beautiful bottle of red wine. As it was my birthday, I was surprised by the chef with a plate of brownies with happy birthday on them. I will end this by saying that this has to be one of the nicest restaurants, with the most lovely staff I've been to in a while. I highly recommend anyone to go here, you will love it.

Not great..we had the last roast chicken at 4pm and the beef had already gone! Dry chicken and no stuffing despite it being on the menu (forgot to check before starting). No atmosphere and limited choices..very disappointed
