Food was below average. I had the "world famous" Yorkshire pudding wrap with pork. The pork was dry. I think it's a shame as its a great idea but the food just wasn't anything special at all. Also where the counter is and they are toasting the wraps was very messy.

The company needs a lot of hygiene and staff's educations. A staff didn't gave me a bag and pass to me like this photo. And a small cap of potatos with gravy sauce was not with a cap. I How could he bring to home in this situation? He packed this box with his gloves which were used serving meals. It was so young rude boy. And he was more rude to next asian tourist who can't speak English well. The taste was nice but totally a bad memory of York.

This is a really poor effort. The staff are downbeat and a little disorganised. I had the pork wrap and when I left the shop to eat outside, I opened it up to find very little meat content. The ingredients were under cooked and well there was not much of it. Being from York myself, locals warn against this place being an overpriced, stingy, tourist trap. I have to go with local opinion. It could be so much better than what it is. Motivate your staff and treat them well, be way more generous with your portions and start using better ingredients. Good food, happy staff, great customer experience. It will help you deliver a better profit and reputation than what you have currently. The YouTube reviews are hammering you.

Even for a day trip tourist like myself, their food is nothing to write home about. The crust of their Yorkshire pudding is soggy with unimaginative vegetables. If there were more stars we would give them to The York Roast on Low Petergate. This is purely because of two members of staff, Christian and Elena. Their attitude to their work, people skills and willingness to help is exceptional. Whilst we were waiting to be served, an elderly Chinese lady walked up to the counter and offered a £20 note. It was evident that she did not speak any English at all. After attempting to communicate with the lady, to find out what it was she would like to purchase and also to communicate that the shop is card only (cashless), they were unsuccessful in getting this across to her because of the language barrier. During a very busy period where the queue was out of the door, instead of becoming frustrated with the language barrier or being distracted by the amount of people waiting, both Christian and Elena took the time to help the lady and ascertain what it was she needed. After trying everything, they decided to use their own meal allowance (they must be allowed a meal during their shift) to provide the lady with a roast dinner. Christian even said that he would pay for her meal himself if this was not a possibility. They did not accept the £20 note and provided the lady with her meal. They even carried her walking frame up the stairs and assisted the frail lady to a table. My partner and I were taken aback by this level of generosity and willingness to help a customer despite the challenges posed. Christian and Elena are a credit to The York Roast and an email has been sent to the company highlighting this. In a world where everyone is so wrapped up in their own self importance it was refreshing to see this situation unfold. Oh, the food we bought was lovely.

We thought this looked like a good choice for lunch but we were wrong. After walking in to absolutely no greeting from the 3 young girls behind the counter I should have walked out. They were busy chatting amongst themselves and not acknowledging customers. They watched me stand and wait behind another customer at the collection till for 5 minutes before informing me I needed to order at the other till. All 3 of them were serving one customer it seems! I ordered the naked roast and a beef sandwich. Card payment only - not good when you're spending over £20! The prepped food arrived eventually and I was shocked that there was gravy all over the outside of the box. The server didn't apologise although she saw me using the napkins to wipe it off. Poor customer service! Food was edible but the meat was chewy and fatty and the roast potatoes were clearly frozen not fresh so dry in the middle. The sandwich consisted of 5 pieces of beef, a flat piece of bland stuffing and a squashed roast potato - shocking for £8!! We went to shambles and had a cheaper lunch with better customer service, great food and lovely atmosphere - go there instead!!

However, the owners / management could do with looking at the eating areas aren't great. The tables are usually dirty and need wiping down, but there's no one to do this, especially during peak times. I would suggest having at least one or two people on table duty to clean tables as well as any other mess, empty the bins and do toilet cleaning through the day. The toilets are really not in great shape and one was missing a toilet seat, and it was on my last eat in trip, which was quite a while ago. This is not great, if like me, you need to sit down and faced with an awful toilet bowl.

The restaurant was pretty dirty, card machine very sticky and dirty which is massively off putting to see in a place you’re about to eat from. This place is definitely past its hay day, influencers posting about York tend to miss this restaurant off completely and recommend other nearby street food/restaurants. Feel like this place might need a facelift and maybe pay the staff a little bit more to keep the place clean and keep professional.

I feel bad giving a low review, because we were served quickly by friendly staff and customers. So it is of no fault to the lovely staff and service we received. Me and my partner opted for the Yorkshire pudding wrap, the stuffing was a cheap stuffing mix that wasn’t cooked and just warmed slop and the gravy was horrible and left a film in my mouth, tasted like bisto. Overall it was just really bland, I didn’t expect my socks to be blown off by a Yorkshire pudding wrap but I did expect warm nice tasting comfort food and unfortunately it was not that. We opted for roast potatoes on the side, they weren’t crispy in the slightest and seemed frozen, not cooked in any sort of goose fat etc and if they were they did not taste it. The staff accidentally gave us two lots of roast potatoes as a side and let us keep the second one even though we informed them we didn’t order two, so again lovely staff and service, food was just a let down. Overall it was bland and tasted like frozen or ready made food and worse than your average marstons inn pub food. I also felt quite sick for the rest of the day afterwards, however this may be down to something else.
