A lovely old building from the outside. Popped in for a coffee and ended up having the coffee and donut deal and a coffee with scrambled egg on toast. Coffee was really good. Donut tasted homemade, very tasty. Scrambled eggs were filling. Staff very friendly. Good value for money

Absolutely fantastic place …. what a welcome from the fresh donuts to the smiling staff.. had to come back again before we left to try the food properly and although I wasn’t feeling it my partner had the faggots and pease pudding and thought it was outstanding … I would say give it a go and you won’t be disappointed… thankyou so much everyone .. look forward to coming back in September

Visited for a lovely breakfast. Had probably the best sausage, bacon and egg roll I've had. The sausages were the best bit. Could've eaten a bucket full of those. Brill 👍

Todo el personal muy acogedor y servicial - BTW espero que la señora que nos sirvió tuvo un cumpleaños encantador el domingo! El servicio era rápido y la comida increíble - Ploughmans almuerzo, pollo en ajo, maricas en salsa y asados, pescado con patatas fritas - buena calidad, comida bien presentada y servicio con una sonrisa!

Way overpriced. A "steak" sandwich = overcooked and a tiny amount of meat in a sandwich £11.95. A lager £8.95. For a cafeteria very poor food at maximum mark up. Go to Harkers across the road. The same price for the same sandwich which is 100% better quality and value.

SUCH A LOVELY GEM!! walking in feels so cozy and welcoming, and the staff don’t rush you at all. it really feels like u can just have a break from the craziness of the city and chill. the food is delightful, esp reccomend the £3.50 donut hot drink deal. scrumptious autumn fair vibes donut with a really grand cuppa. will defos be back asap, can’t recommend enough!!

We had such a nice time here! Lovely staff and a great £3.50 ‘donut and a hot drink’ deal. The donuts were homemade and so delicious - perfectly buttery and soft with a sugar coating but not too sweet. And we loved sitting by the warm radiator! The atmosphere was very cozy and relaxing, and we didn’t feel rushed at all. Great spot if you fancy a break whilst walking around the city centre.

Everything about this lunch visit was out of this world! Timely (but not rushed) friendly and polite service. Incredible food! The light batter on the fish, the food was hot, fat tasty chips excellent portion size! I even think that the tasty tartare sauce was homemade?! It was snuggly and warm on a chilly day. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

We had breakfast here both days on our recent stay. We were made to feel welcome on arrival and our order was taken with drinks arriving quite quickly. The food was rustic and cooked to perfection. We both had the Henry’s breakfast and it filled us both up until evening time. Second day, partner got the same again and I went for the scrambled egg and toast, with a slice of black pudding. Again, it was cooked to perfection. Very reasonably priced. Will be returning again next time we’re in York.

Optimal! We ate the typical Yorkshire dish with roast beef with pudding and vegetables, delicious, generous portion, quick and friendly service!

Tried the fish and chips here and it was an amazing dish! The service was great, everyone answered any questions I had, about the beers and sauces. The restaurant also has a lovely "antique" atmosphere and decor, which was nice for a visit to such as old town as York.

£14.95 for what I can only describe as a child's portion at best for something that tasted like the bacon fat in which the meat was prepared in and the most tasteless of sauces, I would be embarrassed to even send it out least of all call it a meal, wouldn't even be big enough for a starter. Then to charge an extra fiver for a side of garlic bread and extra for gravy to go with my mother's meal which should have been part of the meal. Nobody came over to ask how the meal was, they needed to be called over and told how poor the meals were. The only tip they need is to take the criticism as a learning curve and not to speak to my mother the way the guy on the till did because that was down right disgusting, manners cost nothing and so do apologies, nevermind smugness and arrogance towards the opposite sex as that's down right discrimination.

Great little venue with a warm welcome but stops there - if you have neurodiverse or any food intolerant family members do not visit here as there are no concessions and no apologies for not being disability friendly. Food OK - nothing to shout about though...very disappointed. When we tried to explain, there were no apologies and incredibly rude.

Popped into Gert & Henrys for a Full English and was very pleased with the meal. Great ingredients, friendly & speedy service, prices decent also for location & amount of food received.

We visited here as we went to York for the day. We ordered a lamb burger and roast dinner. The portions were a good size but the veg on the Roast dinner was barely warm good job the meat and gravy was warm. The pub itself was a nice quirky place but drinks slightly pricey as the didn't have much on draught so had to have bottles.

Went for a drink and cake cake frozen and wrong one no alcoholic drink without a meal got cake so we could have a drink but no drink cancel it staff abrupt Not recommended

Visited Gert & Henry’s today after several years away from York. This used to be a regular stop when passing through the city. Upon entering with a friend, we were abruptly instructed to “wait there, WAIT THERE!” by the man behind the bar/till. Such treatment felt patronising, as if we were schoolchildren. Once seated, we received prompt service, and our food was delivered quickly. We ordered scones and tea, and the scones were perfectly cooked. However, it was disappointing that such a charming venue in a prime location used cheap plastic packets for strawberry jam with their cream teas. Investing in bulk jam jars and serving the jam in nice dishes would significantly enhance the experience. Also, using metal tea pots/milk pots gives a real caf feel - a few quid invested in some nice china will see some proper return on investment + some. While enjoying our cream teas, we noticed the same man behind the bar repeatedly barking “wait” at every customer who entered, without any greeting or pleasantries. This behaviour became monotonous and was quite rude. On a positive note, the young girl who served us was delightful and deserves recognition. At £5.95 for a cream tea, the price is very reasonable. Given the central location, the establishment could afford to charge a bit more and provide a higher quality product.

Extremely disappointed. Paid over £12 for fish and chips to get crumbly fish with hard batter, and a handful of cheap oven chips. Not being hyperbolic here - actual oven chips. Almost £4 for pepsi that didn't even come in a pint glass Atmosphere wasn't anything special (unless you enjoy the ambience of loud coffee machines) and the rest of my party weren't impressed. Not really sure how they justify these prices. Feels very much like a tourist trap Cost £65 for four of us (no dessert) and none of us were happy. Staff were friendly and attentive but that's the only positive I can give. Far better places in York for half the price

Walking through the market we stumbled across the Restaurant. Beautiful old building inside and out. Greeted by friendly staff. Myself and my mum ordered the roast beef, large fluffy yorkshire puds, melt in the mouth beef, crispy roast potatoes and lots of veg on side, gravy was also rich and tasty. My dad and son had fish and chips, lovely crispy batter and crisp homemade chips. My wife had the salmon tagliatelle, slightly small portion but suited my wife's appetite and was rich and creamy with well cooked fish. Overall an excellent experience and will visit again when in York next, highly recommended.

Wspaniałe miejsce na lunch i nie tylko. Bardzo miła i profesjonalna obsługa. Yorkshire pudding z wołowiną to wyborne danie , jedliśmy też doskonałego burgera i kotleciki rybne w sosie z krewetek. Bardzo rodzinna atmosfera i piękne miejsce . Dziękuję

First time time trying here and wont be our last it was nice and reasonable priced though the coffee was very small and expensive for what you got the sausage bacon egg toast was nice and recommended

Looked really nice from the outside, that's where it ended. Worse ever cream tea! Every year we have a break in york, every year we try a different cafe' Only wanted a cream tea each.... Tea was nice, wish I'd taken photo of the scones! Only just edible but very dry. ... microwaved to warm (or possibly soften) It was tiny, had fatter pancakes to be honest. It was also very dry. Tiniest pot of cream, no more than a teaspoon full. It's definitely was not fresh. A small packeted jam & butter. ( like you see at in B & Bs ) Heard a couple of other people complaining too.

Enjoyed the soup and especially a bottle of Old Peculiar

We came in at noon, looking for something light, but healthy, after having eaten a lot of sweets in the morning. We had the homemade potato, leek and carrot soup, which comes with brown bread, and an order of onion rings. I was really impressed with the soup! It was delicious, homemade, with some yummy garlic croutons on top. The atmosphere here is great. Friendly service, quiet, background music, and a fabulous, tudor age building. Great little pub in the heart of York's Shambles area!

Absolute dreadful food we had a meal there yesterday fish and chips frozen rubbish dreadful burger with chips half cooked everything cooked in rancid oil

The building is stunning and I suspect the food is fine if you order traditional English fare. But we ordered pasta and pancakes. Big mistake. The carbonara was so greasy it was inedible - it was nothing like the genuine article. And my pancake came floating in a pool of cheesy gunk, so I left most of it. They need a more up-to-date chef to deliver these kind of menu items. Or take them off the menu.

We were visiting York for a few days from Cornwall we had dined with my sister in law we choose fish and chips and peas it was lovely followed by a cuppachino recommend Mr and Mrs d Emmett

Wow! Best desert we’ve had in a very very ling time. Lunch was special too. We ate and had a simple soup of the day and triple decker sandwich’s. However we left the best surprise till the end and had their sticky toffee pudding and custard! Wow, the best by far if ever eaten in my life….mmm well worth a visit just for that.

My family from the United States wanted to experience a full English breakfast. Perfect place, oldy worldly, great breakfast.

I have visited Gert and Henry’s many times over the years and have always found the service and the food to be of excellent quality. On a recent two day visit we went on both days and had the Sunday roast beef with Yorkshire pudding which were excellent. The service is sublime and the the location near to the Shambles is first class. I cannot understand some of the negative reviews for this establishment, perhaps these people eat at McDonalds regularly and don’t know what good food tastes like. Highly Recommended. *****

Great restaurant for lunch on a busy day in York. our meals were delicious and the building is lovely with exposed timbers.

What a rip off. Food terrible. You need a magnifying glass to see the portions. My husbandS pie came with 8 chips. My ploughman's had the thinnest slice of cheese possible. They're just ripping people off. Ignorant and overpriced. STAY AWAY.

Very nice breakfast roll, bacon, egg and sausage, all well cooked and good quality. Very good cappuccino. All set in a very beautiful medieval half-timbered building.

Just had a fab meal at Gert & Henrys in York - what a find! 🙌 This Tudor-style gem is like stepping back in time. I went for the cod and seabass fish cakes with creamy prawn sauce - holy moly, it was delish! My partner demolished an Aberdeen Angus cheeseburger, which looked proper tasty too. But the real star? The ambiance! Felt like we were dining with Henry VIII himself (minus the beheadings, thank goodness). Low beams, wonky walls, and that authentic old-world charm - it's the real deal. If you're after a proper English experience with great grub, this place is a must-visit. Just watch your head on those beams after a pint or two! 🤣

Big hearty well cooked English Breakfast in an authentic Tudor building within 5 minutes walk of York Minster and right on the corner of The Shambles. Staff are very friendly and efficient and the whole experience was a joy. I guess this place will get very busy around lunchtime. Considering it is in the centre of the tourist area, the pricing is very reasonable.

We had an awful experience! The burger was a patty and buns, you had to apply your own sauce and had a side of couple chips and lettuce . The food here is up-priced and not a good experience! Any place is better than here.

Such a lovely little place. I had the Fusili with smoked Chicken, Cream and Mushrooms and it was incredible. The service was amazing and it's such a cozy atmosphere.

Worst sunday lunch we have ever had as tourists to york why rip people off you should be ashamed of yourself boil in the bag razor thin beef which is tasteless frozen roast potatoes frozen peas thick tasteless gravy and carrots you advertise fresh veg off the market no mash or boiled potatoes at £15.95 each terrible

We came over just this afternoon for lunch because of so attracted building. Location is in the middle of old town, food was great, especially mussel dish. Pasta is one of my favours and I have love it today. Sunday Roasts were a bit boring, wish they could change the style and put more choice of meat onto the menu. The good thing today for me was service, staffs was friendly and efficient. I love the way they communed heartedly with custormers. Thanks for that.

I marked 5 stars because I didn’t have anything to fault- we only had coffees but the location was lovely, the staff were very friendly, the toilets were clean , it did what it said on the tin and the building was beautiful and looked well maintained.

My wife and I visited here and had a lovely meal. The building is very characterful and quirky. The 1980’s decor didn’t detract at all. Greeted with a smile and the friendliness remained through the experience. Service was very good, very efficient and attentive. The food itself was lovely and hard to fault. We enjoyed the experience from start to finish and highly recommend this establishment.

Over many years I have visited Gert & Henry's and never had a poor experience. I enjoyed lunch with my granddaughter last Sunday, her first visit. We both opted for the steak and kidney pie. It was packed with beautiful tender meat in a rich gravy topped with gorgeous, flaky pastry and served with fresh veg and roast potatoes. I give it 10/10!!

We were drawn in by the beautiful building and were left so disappointed by the food. We had the salmon which looked like it was cooked on a heated argument, laid in a watery liquid similar to something you’d find in an ashtray after a rainy night. The atmosphere was as cold as the reception. No one asked how the food was, figures.

Just had fish and chips and my wife got king prawns. Do yourself a favour and steer well clear... absolutely disgusting! Rude staff, frozen fish and chips. 10.95 fish and chips 😂 I got 9 chips on plate and my wife couldn't eat the prawns as they were cold and salty. £12.95 😂 told the owner (im guessing was him) at the till about it and never ever again. Not very apologetic and was rude saying everything is fresh I would beg to differ

Went for what hoped to be a nice lunch mmm warmed up overcooked dry food had better at McDonald's and I hate McDonald's, house wine like battery acid , completely overpriced and very ignorant hosts.....NEVER AGAIN!!!

Food was absolutely disgusting got served a roast dinner , with peas and carrots the carrots where rock solid , the beef tasted like cheap meat from Iceland and the gravy was stone cold with loads of skin. Disgusting prices for what you get. All the other meals where disgusting aswell. Would never come back here again. And not forgetting the ridiculous prices of drinks to!

My first time of writing a bad review. The last time my wife and I eat at this restaurant was well over 20 years ago .this is were you could get all your dinner inside of a very large freshly made Yorkshire pudding it was famous for this..... Now they serve slice beef with aunty Bessie Yorkshire puddings tin pees an over cooked roast potatoes. My fish and chips and tin pees I left it was that bad they must have cooked the fish the day before and rebooked it again that afternoon for me. THIS must be number 1 for the worst foot we had anywhere for a long long time. They dint even ask how was your meal. They could see I had left mine most other people were only having snacks which looked ok. The good thing about doing reviews like this is I can warn others this is not a good place in my mind to eat. The owner didn't seem bothered I didn't eat their fish and chips. Nice building but bad food. My batter looked like ginger snap, chips were hard and you can't spoil tin pees or they would have done that.

The breakfast was very nice and staff friendly. The cappuccino was nice and there is plenty of car park spaces and easy access to the cafe. Recommend if in the area.

Came today ,was drawn in by the beautiful building, but it's a different story inside , £15 for a roast dinner ! Slither of beef, 3 small roast potatoes, and a few peas and carrots which seemed frozen and the gravy all had skin on ! Yorkshire was ok , but Could of got the same from a birseye microwave dinner for a fraction of the price ! Would not return

Absolutely beautiful hot breakfast! All tasted really good and quality ingredients. Nice pot of yorkshire tea too! Not much waiting, lovely waitress and the building is absolutely stunning! Such character! We will be back when we come back to York for sure!

As the Christmas market was on we were worried there would not be any tables but luckily they had one. The waitress was lovely and friendly. We ordered breakfasts and they were happy to accomodate with extras and how our eggs were cooked even though they were very busy. The food was hot, tasted lovely and we really enjoyed it. Was definately value for money. We did not feel rushed to leave. If we are ever in York again we would certainly visit again. Big thumbs up from us.

Lovely Tudor building. I couldn't fault the service and the staff were lovely but the sting in the tail came with the bill. Just short of £32 for 2 baked potatoes and 2 bottles of beer. Pretty expensive for what was mediocre food. In the evening we had a 2 course meal with wine at another restaurant for £57. It's a shame really as we have been here on previous visits to York and had better food. Definitely won't be returning next year.

Very poor Sunday lunch. 2 slices of beef, Yorkshire Pud, a few carrots, roast potatoes and frozen peas fir £15.95??? Need more vegetables please. Beer £6.95 pint and £4 half.

We’re back in York so we searched out this restaurant/cafe because it was memorably good last time we came. Delicious fresh sandwiches and spicy bean burger with crispy golden chips, followed greedily by homemade puddings.

We stopped here for dinner, as we were drawn in by the charm of the building. The staff were very friendly and helpful, however the food was very disappointing. It was very expensive and you got very little for your money; also the food didn't seem fresh more like a frozen meal that had been reheated. I wouldn't recommend this pub for food.

Location really good, my lamb burger was lovely, chips were ok but not the best, salad came with slice of orange so could not eat, not enough sauce my boyfriends dinner was terrible,roast beef, gravy all over some thin beef, roast potatoes soggy, yorkshire pudding in York should be amazing but was a pre brought one, staff was very rude and could be heard complaning about other customers. Very overpriced

Been here a few times and the food has been good with the odd hiccup from time to time but this time food wasn`t good enough for my dog ..2 burgers meals were ok but chips were cold and just scraps to be honest..Sister had fishcake with some tasteless sauce on fishcakes were dry with next to no taste at all, I wanted a pie but wanted a proper pie with sides and a base not just a topper, wish i had gone for the topper now the crusts on my pie was so thick with next to no filling.. vegetables was on a big platter roast spuds were soggy and carrots luke warm and broccoli warm and mush..Im really disappointed as weve had some really nice food here but this time it was horrible, had planned to have a sweet as well but was just put off with the main course...Think its time to move on to a fav place to eat..

Started off well, the starters were nice,however the main meals were terrible, beef roast and liver very cheap poor ingredients also very little of it! The spaces had a skin on them too,Very expensive for what it was, never asked if everything was OK,they obviously know what they are selling,really wish I had said something now, looks lovely on the outside, dont be fooled stay well away.

Popped in here as it is within the shambles. Ok service, good selection of food on the menu. Unfortunately the food was well below average, I spent the rest of the day walking past lovely looking tapas restaurants and other eateries I wish I had found earlier.

Absolute joke of a sunday lunch. My wife and I ordered the beef with Yorkshire pudding and vegetables, the beef came first with the so called gravy which had a skin on it because it had been sitting for ages and was lukewarm then 3 minutes later the veg arrived also lukewarm. The Yorkshire pudding was absolutely disgusting as were the so called roast potatoes. Please please do not use this restaurant its an absolute rip off not once did they ask hows your meal etc even when we paid the bill still no interaction with the customer. £4.65 for a small bottle of lager and a fiver for a third of a glass of red wine. Like i said these people who run this establishment have absolutely no interest in looking after there customers only after your money so please dont waste it in this place.

Cuando nos sentamos, le pregunté si estaba bien tomar una copa y la respuesta fue sí, está bien, cuando vine a ordenar, la señora mayor dijo que teníamos que pedir comida ya que este es un restaurante, no un bar, como expliqué. que le habíamos preguntado si podíamos tomar una copa cuando rompió el menú y se fue furiosa sin decir una palabra más.

Tener un fin de semana encantador en York, así que después de visitar el caos pensamos que realmente disfrutaríamos del ambiente de comer en este fantástico edificio. Una vez que entramos fuimos recibidos por un rudo caballero mayor que nos sentó en una mesa mojada y asientos mojados. . . . . la señora que vino a servirnos fue grosera y notamos que no era así con otras personas, solo nosotros. Pedí pescado y mi compañero pidió un desayuno. . . . las salchichas eran de mala calidad y los huevos mocosos. . . el pescado no tenía sabor, patatas fritas duras como una roca! Definitivamente recomendaría elegir otro lugar donde no desperdicie su dinero, definitivamente necesita cambiar el personal

En el exterior de este lugar, se ve muy atractivo, con rosbif y Yorkshires y muchas otras comidas sabrosas. No tan. Desde el principio, tuvimos que subir dos tramos de escaleras que eran muy estrechas, a pesar de ver algunas mesas vacías en la planta baja (mi mamá tiene problemas con las escaleras después de la cirugía de cadera). Examinamos el menú y nos dimos cuenta de que era bastante caro (más de 14 por una hamburguesa...). Nos decidimos por tarta casera de pollo, puerros y jamón. ¿Qué podríamos tener con él? Patatas fritas, ensalada o verduras. Extraño, ya que no comería ensalada con un pastel caliente, pero tendría papas y verduras (pero verduras, sin papas). De todos modos, llegó nuestra comida. Si te digo que este lugar también serviría como zapatero, verías que el pastel estaba tan seco como un hueso y que el pastel podría haberme vuelto a poner suelas en los zapatos. El chef claramente se dio cuenta de que estaba demasiado cocido, seco y duro, ya que venía con un tazón de lo que habría sido la salsa que debería haber estado en el pastel.Comida espantosa, servicio mediocre, refrescos extremadamente caros (2.50 por menos de media pinta de limonada) y atmósfera inexistente. Evitar.

El edificio es precioso y muy céntrico y no hay quejas sobre el servicio en absoluto, en general gente encantadora, sin embargo, ¡la comida! Realmente no es muy agradable en absoluto; esencialmente una cena escolar con un precio excesivo que nos quitó la oportunidad de comer por el resto del día.

Went in for tea and scones. Didn't have cheese scones. Nice spot, very old building. The sort of place you would normally find in the countryside with all the horse stuff. Good service, nice tea.

We were looking for a hot lunch on a busy Saturday and had 50 minutes only. Just walked in, were seated very soon, all Covid measures worked very well, ordered risotto from the specials of the day and a seafood pancake plus two glasses of a house wine. Had our drinks straight away, both red and rose were very nice. Food was delicious and fresh. Served very simple. We really enjoyed everything and paid only £25. Definitely recommend the place.

Although staff and coffee were good they dropped the ball on the sausage on toasted bun as it was a bit of a joke as it only includes two chipolatas! Not even sausages! They must think they’re only tourists so we won’t see them again!
