Stayed here 2 nights as my partner was running the Yorkshire marathon. Great decision as we absolutely loved the place. Room gorgeous and quirky which we loved. Had breakfast booked but had dinner there also both nights, food was immense and choices were great. The staff though are different class, go out of their way to help you and make you feel welcome. We are already planning a 2nd trip to this absolute gem

My wife and I took my mum for Sunday lunch here yesterday (20th Oct 2024). The pub was busy as there had been the York Marathon that day. We go sat down (eventually) and took our drinks to the table. We ordered food at the bar - I got Chicken Fajitas and a side of chips. Well, what I got was mushroom fajitas and not a lot of chicken - I don't like mushrooms! There was no mention of mushrooms in the description. Also there was no level of spice in either the fajita's or salsa - I was disappointed in them. My mum got the Pork Stroganoff and said the pork was so chewy she couldn't eat it - again lots of mushrooms which she didn't mind and said the sauce was nice but again, she was disappointed that the meat was inedible. My wife got the Grilled Salmon from the specials board - she said the salmon was good but carrots were overcooked and the new potatoes were undercooked and there were far too many potatoes. On a plus side the desert was nice but I won't be returning in a hurry.

Soo impressed we stayed an extra night, don't expect 100% high quality rooms as it is a listed building,a proper oldy world b&b the rooms are more than adequate, warm clean and comfortable. We were made welcome at our very first point of contact and throughout the whole stay. A lovely young blonde lady (Sue i think)greeted us at breakfast each day and served superb food and service, nothing was to much trouble and every thing was bob-on,,,,,,,,,,,,,the atmosphere in the bar was great and the food was also superb, but you will need to book a table as the place is so popular among the locals, great food , good choice and sensibly priced, we liked it soo much that we stayed another night although not in the same room as it was already booked but they managed to get us in another very good room again fully stocked tea tray, best stay we have had at any b&b or hotel ever and have already planned on returning. From the house keeper through to management and everyone in between, a BIG thankyou. We'll be back.

Had dinner here each night of a weekend break. The menu is extensive, providing a very good range of fish and vegetarian dishes, which suited us as non-meat eaters. The quality is excellent, the portions more than sufficient and the service incredibly quick. The fish stew was full of fish and shellfish and very filling. The salads are huge and the king prawn linguini superb. The sharing cheeseboard has very generous servings of good quality stilton, brie and cheddar. We will book accommodation and evening meals here whenever we visit York.

Visited with my husband. We both ordered peppercorn chicken with roasted veg off the special board. It was terrible. We couldn’t cut the chicken as it was really tough. The sauce was disgusting, and the potatoes were hard. When the waiter cleared the table my husband mentioned the poor quality of the meal as a lot of food was left on our plates. Nothing was done about it, not even an apology! The staff are young and not interested when you complain. We won’t be going back for a meal again.

The fact that our food arrived 5 mins after we ordered it should have been a clue that the food in this friendly pub is precooked. The pies are soggy with glutenous sauce that belong in a chip shop. Quite honestly they were disgusting. The chips that come with them were soggy and horrible. The staff are lovely and friendly but the food is rough.

Visited a few weeks ago. Hadn't been in the last year or so. Left very disappointed. Starter of Camembert consisted of three small bits and a tiny bit of salad for £7. Steak and Ale Pie had been microwaved for far too long and pastry was inedible. Cheesy chips had a bit of grated cheese on them that had barely melted. Everything else was passable. Told the server about the pie, got a generic apology, nothing else was done. Won't be returning, avoid, not what it used to be.

Came with family four of us booked for 1.30pm meal was fine but was little upset that the kitchen closed without telling us at 2,30pm giving us just one hour to eat our starters and main meal so when we went to the bar at 2.30pm to ask to order deserts we were informed kitchen was closed and they had left never know this ever before that a kitchen closes while people are still eating and not even to tell us shame as it spoilt the meal..

This is a great pub. It has a good, local feel but it is clear that most of the customers are tourists. The reason it feel so homely is the fantastic staff who make you feel incredibly welcome and help without asking. For example, my hands were full with glasses, but Poppy helped straight away even though the bar was busy. Poppy took an interest in where we were from, when we'd be back, and how we were enjoying the stay. The other members of staff were also incredibly helpful and the service was brilliant. It was an incredibly busy pub/restaurant - but that wasn't reflected in long delays or waits for food. Service was brilliant. Strongly recommend.

Family Took my son for tea, he opted for the mini beef burger which didn't mention onion was in it, he doesn't like onion and tried to pick it out but that was a good 50% of the burger so he gave up. He said the bread was nice. I had the steak and ale pie I did ask for it without mushy peas but they still came with it. The pie pastry was very soggy so l imagine it was microwaved but still the filling was tasty. Some of the chips were a bit raw. The onion rings were good. We ordered at 16.50 and was almost 17.30 when the food was brought out. Overall it was a bit disappointing. I did complain and they knocked my sons meal off, I did say it should probably mention the onion on the menu but they disagreed with me, considering there was about as much onion as beef it should be listed.

Visited the plough inn for 1 night for valentine's evening. Booked the standard double room. It was a really beautiful room and a great size. The bed was so so comfy and the shower was fantastic. The little bears on the bed and little chocolates on the bed was was such a cute lovely touch. Great options of drinks in the room too. I liked also that the access to the rooms was completely separate to the pub so it made it more private you also didn't hear a peep from the pub which was really surprising considering how busy it was. Breakfast was lovely. The coffee was lovely a frothy. All the staff we met were fantastic and we would happily stay here again. Only slight negative which isn't really a negative was in the morning there was only the cook and a waitress and bless her she was running ragged ha we was told they were fully booked (valentine's and half term). But she was super lovely and still made the effort to have a chat with us but I think one more staff would've really helped her. But definitely a 5 star stay and we will visit again next year.

We stayed for three nights in between Christmas and New Year. The staff were very helpful and attentive. The room was a good size , I found the bed too soft but my husband found it just right. The shower was reported to the staff , it was way too hot to use safely. To be fair to the staff it wasn't a good time of year to get a plumber out. The room was plenty warm enough, you can adjust the heating in the room yourself. Plenty of clean towels and washing products in the bathroom. The breakfast was a good size, a selection of some cereals, bread, croissants and a variety of cooked breakfasts. We ate in the pub on the first night, I would recommend booking as it gets very busy. The food was quickly served and plenty of it. We walked into York which only took 20-30 minutes. There is a river walk but as it was flooded we remained in the main road. There are numerous bus services going to York and surrounding areas. We never used our car, far too busy and expensive to park in town.

We stayed at The Plough Inn for my birthday weekend on a visit to York and what a great choice! All the team are really friendly and couldn't be nicer - warm and welcoming on arrival and happy to share tips on what to see in York which we appreciated. The rooms are comfortable, clean and decorated in a quirky style. The inn is well located for exploring York city centre and the bus stop when you turn left outside the inn has you into the center in no time. Breakfast is cooked to your requirements, although beware the portions are large! We also ate dinner at the inn and again the food was delicious. We will definitely be returning to York and without doubt will book to stay at the Plough again. Thank you for a lovey stay :)

We booked a table for three for a birthday treat. When we got there the table was two steps inside the door facing it. There was no porch so the door opened straight to outside. It was 3 degrees so every time the door opened it was freezing. Also as the table was right by the door there were lots of people standing over it. We asked for an alternative table but were told that it was too busy. We asked why they hadn’t told us about where the table would be. They just shrugged and said they were really busy. I understand they were busy but if they couldn’t fit us in on a suitable table they shouldn’t have taken the booking. If you want to book here ask specifically not to be by the door. We left without ordering.

Looking forward to the food here but were disappointed. Ordered the pies but we’re surprised when they arrived within 10 minutes. Not surprisingly the steak pie wasn’t hot so was returned to the kitchen. Another very short wait brought a different pie, this time hot but with pastry you couldn’t put a knife through. Our complaint fell on the deaf ears of young staff that didn’t really care. No offer of discount or apology. Won’t be rushing back.

I was at the hotel early morning ahead of a conference and wanted tea and toast although not a resident. A young waiter called Abdul was very helpful and although his lounge section was not open for drinks etc at 7.40am he assisted and organised both for me. A professional , helpful and informative waiter who should be recognised for his service. Thanks again - it certainly left a positive impression with me about the hotel.

Having booked a table, we had to wait at the bar for some while even to be welcomed, with people arriving after us being shown to tables before us. Once seated, it took a long time for anyone to take a drinks order, or to bring a drinks order, bring menus, etc. Indeed, so slow was the service that we decided that we would leave if our order hadn’t been taken within 10 minutes (having already waited some little while). In fact, it was taken within eight minutes! The food itself was lovely, but the service was chaotic, if friendly, and slow. There are much better places to eat in York.

My wife and myself have eaten here a fair few times. But never have been as wowwed as we were last night. The gentleman at front of house was impeccable. A credit to the pub. After surveying the specials menu we both decided that the shin of beef pie with champ mash and fresh veg sounded too good to be missed. We were not disappointed! We both said, quite possibly the best pub meal we have ever ever had! The beef was cooked perfectly, the short crust pastry was just incredible. My wife Lydia said it was just like her mum's. That's some credit to the chef! The champ mash was delicious and the veg cooked absolutely spot on. Not a second too long. Again, perfect! We were probably too full for dessert but we were never going to resist if the main was anything to go by. My wife chose the Eton mess. I've never seen anyone look so happy eating a dessert. It looked amazing and indeed it was. I chose the apple and blueberry crumble. Simple and delicious. Just how I like it. All washed down with two fine glasses of Primitivo. And all very reasonable too. Top marks to everyone at the pub. We most definitely will be back!
