Me and my partner visited York for the weekend. We popped into this pub while having a look round the centre. The service was a nice and friendly pub but, food was not up to much. My partner ordered a steak and it wasn't good quality and not cooked properly. Expensive for what it was. Apart from the food not being good, it was a nice pub. Hopefully, the food situation was a one off.

Before starting an eight days holiday in Prague my twin brother Stephen and I decided to have a week long holiday in York taking in the great sites of this historic Roman walled city and visiting the great pubs York is justifiably famous for ,The Gillygate Pub is a particular favourite of ours . This pub is superb ,interior is so good ,exposed brickwork,a solid wood serving bar, pubby decor and furnishings,tv's to enjoy the sport and there's plenty of seating options spread throughout this pub both inside and outside in their beer garden. We were here on a Wednesday afternoon ,we were greeted warmly by a very pleasant member of staff,we ordered a blonde ale from Ainsty Ales Brewery, these were served in excellent condition,we just kicked back, chilled out and took in the great pub we were in. My ale was top notch,a golden ale, hoppy, bursting with taste and very easy to drink,a great Brirish ale served in pristine condition in a great British pub . We both really enjoyed our ale's in here before we moved on and as on every other visit to here we had a great time. The Gillygate Pub is easy to locate along Gillygate. Opening hours are; Monday to Sunday,8am till 11pm. Well worth checking out if you're in the area.

we stayed in a family room at this b&b we didn’t have breakfast we payed 100 for one night as group of 4 my daughter and her son they was given a broken bed settee to sleep on held together by a bit of wood , the bed was so dusty and dirty i can only assume their cleaner is blind ! the window didn’t fit the frame in the bedroom which left a gap and the wind was howling through all night they had old blood stained quilts which we noticed when one of the duvet covers had come off , the following morning we addressed the situation to one of the staff who took down a phone number and said the manager would call us up to resolve the matter but she was more focused on charging us the 25 pounds for a nasty bottle of white wine we had drank the night before ! i would AVOID this place at all costs !

We stayed in one of six rooms for three nights, on entering the room we were aware of the stench of a drain smell , coming from the bathroom/shower. The windows are badly fitted and either won’t open or close. The room size is adequate but there isn’t a drawer unit to put clothes into, so most items remained in the case. I’m not sure if it was a good sign but during our stay there were street repairs on going so no traffic was not flowing along the street, but the sound people make whilst walking along the road kept you awake, so very noisy. The wifi is truly awful, so unreliable and very frustrating. Overall we’re very disappointed with our choice of location, York itself is fantastic and a must visit it has something for everyone. 😐

Having researched a weekends cycling and staying at York Youth Hostel this pub was on the right side of the city for a beer. It was important for us to ensure that there was some outdoor space and even better pizzas were on offer. And it is in the Good Beer Guide. I rang the day before to check it out and we got there about 7.30pm. The pub was quiet - although it had been busy outside from 3pm to 5pm so were lucky it was quiet - a bit unlucky there were no pizzas left! We were shown to an outside table and our details were taken in case of Covid issues. Friendly staff, we had Ainsty Ales - ??Sparkle?? and Bantam Best. Thanks. (Followed by a visit to The Eagle and Child, The Old Bank and a kebab from East to West/Middle Feast - top kebabs)

Unfortunately we didn't sample the food but it did smell delicious. Reasonably priced and there was an added bonus of carol singing which made the 1st of December even more festive. Will definitely visit again and try the delights!! Thank you :)

My twin brother Stephen and I found this pub as we were pub hopping around this part of York and what a great find. Walking in and I knew I would enjoy my visit here, the pub has a lovely interior, great decor and furnishings, the main room is dominated by a solid wood serving bar, theres tv's to enjoy the sport and theres plenty of seating options spread throughout this pub, its also dog friendly and offers accommodation, it's just one really good locals pub. We were here on a Saturday night, pub was busy with a great atmosphere, greeted warmly by a very pleasant member of staff who served us a cider each,we luckily managed to get a table were we just kicked back, chilled out and took in the great pub we were in. On this visit I cannot really comment on the meals as we were here only for drinks but I must say that the meals leaving the kitchen looked and smelt delicious, proper pub grub. My cider was outstanding, an iced cold and sparkling cider that certainly cut through my thirst,a really refreshing cider indeed. We both really enjoyed our ciders in here and although our visit was only fleeting for a first time visit we were totally impressed with The Gillygate. The Gillygate is easy to locate along Gillygate. A great pub ,well worth a visit if your in the area, it's not to far from Bootham Bar and Exhibition Square.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

I visited with my eighteen month old daughter whilst on a day visit to York, although York is blessed with a wide range of lovely pubs and bistros I came across precious few that I would have felt comfortable having a toddler in, probably making a mess. After a good hour of wondering around searching I came across this pub and ordered two sandwiches so she didn't get hungry on the way back home to Leicestershire, however I was taken aback by the portion sizes as it quickly became evident we could of shared a single sandwich between us. This is of course no slight on the Gillygate, merely my own poor foresight. Tge food was delicious and the lovely young lady on the bar was very helpful, she checked the coast was clear for me to use the lady's toilets in order to change my daughters nappy as the men's has no facilities to do so but in an ancient building such as this is had no expectation of it having so. She even waited outside so that no unfortunate ladies stumbled in across me.A lovely pub which I would happily recommended to anyone and will b3 sure to visit again when next I get the opportunity to visit york.

Just needed a quick lunch breaking off the day of sightseeing. Confirmed they were serving in the garden, but after a long time we had to go and find a waitress ourselves. No menu available, but we were told a long list of items, which were mostly forgotten by the time the table was reached again. Still no waitress, so we decided on the only two things we could remember. Pizza arrived quickly, but the other meals didn't arrive. Had to go and ask for it. When it finally arrived, there were still no cutlery or salt/pepper as the table was never sat. The waitress promised to return with it. After a long wait, she arrived with the salt and pepper but had forgotten the cutlery. Finally we had to go and find it off tables inside. Those having eaten the pizza were now ready to leave, while we gulped down our now cold food. Totally unacceptable.

About 3 weeks ago my friends and I went to The Gillygate for Sunday lunch. Three of us ordered Steak Pie and having starved myself all day I was ready for a proper pub pie....oh dear. It was basically an avarege tasting casserole/stew in a small ramakin sized dish with a puffed pastry lid, which was horribly burnt, on all three pies. I wouldn't call this a pie and the menu needs to make it clear that it is not going to be a full pie ( I was told by my boyfriend that whole pies had been served previously, so why the change?). It lacked in flavour though did contain a good amount of meat. We got a meagre portion of chips alongside and a little jug of gravy, which was unnessessary, as the pie had gravy in it and there weren't enough chips to soak up the extra! All in all, I was so dissapointed. My other friends had Fish & Chips and the classic roast dinner and loved it (though the chef put the fish on top of the chips, which steamed both the chips and underside of the fish batter). I decided to make myself feel better with a Brownie dessert, advertised as coming with a chocolate sauce and icecream. The brownie was great and was a large portion, however, the sauce was literally a decorative brown smear across the plate, which frankly looked quite unappealing (maybe the chef heard me complain about the pie). It was a shame since the Brownie was so large and intense, it really needed a sauce to help it go down. I love this pub in so many ways, but on this day, the Chef got two classic pub dishes really wrong.

A recently renovated pub off the main tourist area of York offering a changing range of hand-pulled beers, a cosy environment and a spacious beer garden that makes you think you are in middle of the countryside rather than a town centre. There is a small menu of food - sandwiches, sharing platters, burgers etc. We chose a BLT (served on toasted ciabatta), a classic burger and fish and chips. All the food was excellent and the chips were real (unlike a lot of pubs in York that think it's acceptable to serve oven chips or worse!). My husband had the steak which looked good,he said it tasted better than it looked. Was getting very busy,a table of 9 people came in so I thought we had better get our order in. No need to worry though, everything was served in good time and the other table was served up the same so hat's off to the chef. I find that when a place is changed it can be for the worse but the Gillygate has been for the better. I was told I couldn't have the drink I had asked for as it was too busy and that I would have to choose something simpler. Not only this but lunch was said to be served until 3pm. We were looking to order at 2:15pm which we thought was plenty of time. After attempting to order at the bar we were told that we were too late to order food and because they were so busy we wouldn't be able to eat until 3:45. The same was said to my mother-in-law who tried to order a simple plate of Pate, which requires no cooking and even this was too much effort for them. I won't be returning.

I was torn between 3 and 4 stars for this one.The speed of the service for a few sandwiches was very slow (30-40 mins during the afternoon) and when they arrived one was wrong, so my sister had to wait for the correction before eating. Saying that, the service on arrival was good and they managed to squeeze in our table for 5 when there wasn't much space at all (they ended up asking a couple sitting on a larger table to move to a smaller one so we could use theirs). The food was decent when it arrived though. The chips were great and full of flavour and the sandwiches were filling. We were disappointed at the tiny size of the lunchtime menu, as they had a choice of sandwiches and not much else. I was looking forward to the main meals advertised outside but we learned they were only available in the evening, after we'd paid for our drinks.Nothing particularly special but certainly not bad.

We visited here when in York for the day. The menu was limited but the food was freshly cooked for us and everybody agreed that what they had was 1st class. From the burgers through to the baked salmon with mussel chowder you could not fault the taste or presentation and at a reasonable price. The only regret was that they didn't do the steak and ale pie at lunchtime as I am sure this would have been delicious too.

Popped in here for a quiet drink. A lovely pub, & spotlessly clean. Not a very good selection of draught beers & our drinks were expensive in comparison to other places, but it was a nice place. We didn't eat here but the menu looked good.

There is not a big choice of main courses but the food we had was delicious and was served with a lovely selection of fresh vegetables. If you want a good, sensible and satisfying meal then this is a good place to go. Most of the main courses were almost £10 but the food was very tasty and nicely presented. The restaurant area is very small but we were there early on a Saturday evening before it got too busy. The atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly.

My family enjoyed a nice meal at the Gillygate last night . It is more pub than restaurant, but we were provided with a nice, tasty meal at a very good price. The atmosphere was comfortable, and the service was excellent. I'd not hesitate to return.

I was on a coach trip to York at weekend and went past this public house on the way in to shop. Through the window it looked cosy so made a point of stopping there on return to catch my couch. It was like the old pubs I remember but in the centre of town. Very pleasant experience . Will defiantly return

Having booked a table, we had to wait at the bar for some while even to be welcomed, with people arriving after us being shown to tables before us. Once seated, it took a long time for anyone to take a drinks order, or to bring a drinks order, bring menus, etc. Indeed, so slow was the service that we decided that we would leave if our order hadn’t been taken within 10 minutes (having already waited some little while). In fact, it was taken within eight minutes! The food itself was lovely, but the service was chaotic, if friendly, and slow. There are much better places to eat in York.

My wife and myself have eaten here a fair few times. But never have been as wowwed as we were last night. The gentleman at front of house was impeccable. A credit to the pub. After surveying the specials menu we both decided that the shin of beef pie with champ mash and fresh veg sounded too good to be missed. We were not disappointed! We both said, quite possibly the best pub meal we have ever ever had! The beef was cooked perfectly, the short crust pastry was just incredible. My wife Lydia said it was just like her mum's. That's some credit to the chef! The champ mash was delicious and the veg cooked absolutely spot on. Not a second too long. Again, perfect! We were probably too full for dessert but we were never going to resist if the main was anything to go by. My wife chose the Eton mess. I've never seen anyone look so happy eating a dessert. It looked amazing and indeed it was. I chose the apple and blueberry crumble. Simple and delicious. Just how I like it. All washed down with two fine glasses of Primitivo. And all very reasonable too. Top marks to everyone at the pub. We most definitely will be back!

I was at the hotel early morning ahead of a conference and wanted tea and toast although not a resident. A young waiter called Abdul was very helpful and although his lounge section was not open for drinks etc at 7.40am he assisted and organised both for me. A professional , helpful and informative waiter who should be recognised for his service. Thanks again - it certainly left a positive impression with me about the hotel.
