What can we say fantastic staff with fantastic food 100 percent clean tidy great place well with a visit really good pub food

All 4 of us had different starters & main meals and each one was top drawer. Good service, staff really seemed to care that we were happy with meals. Definitely recommend. Good atmosphere

Had lunch with family and friends. Very pleasant staff. We had the sandwiches/salad/chips and all enjoyed what we had.

We met up with friends for our annual Christmas get together. We have met at the Highwayman for the past 4 years and never been disappointed. Once again the food was excellent (both quality and portion size) and the service was superb. The pub was a little quieter than usual (but it was a Wednesday evening). Absolutely superb evening. Thank you.

Been tonight to this pub and had the most amazing food by the most amazing Chef, the staff are so lovely and the service is fantastic, already booked for November when we’re back, this place is literally the best and our favourite meal of the holiday ❤️

What a gem of a pub this is. Found it a couple of years ago and now have to come every time we are in York and that is three times a year! The chef is absolutely top notch with her own home cooked food and an excellent and varied menu. Staff and locals are very welcoming and give the pub its unique atmosphere. Highly recommend and well worth the visit.

Great Sunday lunch - food excellent - the homemade veg soup was delicious as a starter followed by the equally delicious roast pork with all the trimmings. great service too - perfect anniversary lunch venue. Beer very good too. Food so plentiful we had the pudding as a takeaway for later

Fantastic impromptu dog friendly lunch spot. We drove past this coming towards York from Helmsley. What a lovely warm and friendly local pub it was. Excellent food, generous portions and friendly locals. Would highly recommend.

What a find.... We were at the Caravan and Camping Club site and walked it. Took 40 minutes with the dogs. What a great find, we loved dinner, proper homemade steak and kidney and steak sn mushroom pies, seasonal veg, great plentiful gravy, and nice puds to follow. My wife wants to take this place home to Lancashire. Beer was 1st class, too. Can't believe anyone can give thiscless than 5 stars. We had 2 dogs so ate in the bar area, which we expected, and not only food but atmosphere and locals banter was great.

4 bus passes for Thursday booked lunch. Friendly welcome., beer on form. Portion sizes of main course and puddings well above average and freshly cooked and tasty too. Varied menu. Very sensible prices. Will certainly return. Be aware to check opening and food service times.

Had the 3 course Sunday lunch which was absolutely delicious. Started with creamy garlic mushrooms, sirloin of beef and a crumble & custard. The Theakston's bitter was spot on as was the service, can't wait to return. My only complaint was the plates could have done to have been a little hotter.

Had a really nice lunch at this nice Country Inn. Dogs were welcome in the bar and staff were very friendly. After lunch we even managed a game of pool in the pool room. Need to check the kitchen is open before you go as this was our second attempt to eat here but well worth the return journey.

we stayed at Sherriff Hutton camping and caravan club and walked a mile to the village only to find that The Highwayman doesn't open at all on Mondays and Tuesdays so was very disappointed so have informed the camp site accordingly. Spoke to a few locals who said that the food has gone very expensive and not worth the extra money.

We found the meals to be very expensive for what you received, the steaks weren’t cooked as requested and very expensive. Not priced for a village pub. Won’t be returning.

Ordered a lockdown takeaway and was delighted at the food. Had the chef's special burger and it was delicious. Even the chips were spot-on. The portions were more than generous and the bill was tiny. Will certainly be using the place again.

We ate at the Highwayman on 29/8/20. There were 4 of us eating.We haven’t been to the Highwayman for years and it did not disappoint. All the starters, mains and puddings were lovely. All very good value and we will definitely return soon. The owners have got a great system for social distancing. The waiting staff were friendly and attentive. A very enjoyable evening !!

The Highwayman at Sheriff Hutton proved to be an excellent venue for 18 of us to enjoy lunch at the end of our Rotary Club walk. Excellent food from their extensive menu with great service, enjoyed in the large, beautifully kept Beer Garden. Their wonderful staff made it so easy and welcoming for us.

Waited nearly two outs for a starter, let alone the main nearly 3 hours. Just awful service - no update - completely noooo explanation for why the food was so late ! Not happy and probably won’t be coming back

Excellent dining pub, dog friendly with a lovely beer garden with orchards- apples & Pears - we had two soups - home made vegetable and warm baguette which was exceedingly tasty followed by haddock and home made chips - the fish was large and really tasty, very friendly staff, Covid safe rules in place and ‘eat out to help out’ on so ££ excellent priced meal

A cosy warm pub on a cold evening with pleasant staff. The menu looked interesting with 3 specials on the board which we chose from. Sadly very ordinary food with very uninteresting and over cooked vege, carrots, cabbage and cauliflower. The Cumberland sauce was too sweet and covered the whole meal not just the duck breast. I have tasted better ready meals.The chips were tasty and homemade , the best part of the meal. Overpriced for the quality, a shame as it is our local and I would be a regular if the food matched the ambience.....

Stopped here for a quick gin and Guinness with the children on bank holiday weekend, there was a football goal and basketball net that kept them entertained for an hour, very enjoyable.

On our way to Scarborough, we decided to turn off the main road in search of a local pub/restaurant. We were fortunate to come across the Highwayman. Friendly staff welcomed us at the bar and, as we had a dog with us, we were going to eat outside in their lovely beer garden. Then it started raining!The owner came out and said that we could hunker down in the bar area, with the dog, to eat our meals. Two of us had scampi with home-made chips. The other had a bacon & cheese burger. The food was so good that the dog, an ever-hungry Labrador, didn’t even get a look in. Great food. Nice atmosphere and so much better than a “services” on a main road.

Whilst camping at a nearby site last year we visited The Highwayman on two occasions, once on a Friday evening, once for Sunday lunch. On both occasions food was plentiful, well cooked and to a high standard. Having returned to the same site this year my partner and I returned, again on a Fri evening and for Sunday lunch. Food is beautifully presented, tasty and made with what appears to be high quality ingredients. The staff are welcoming and professional throughout the visit. I would have no hesitation to recommend to others. The prices are fair and in keeping with the quality and standard of food received.

Beautiful sunny day so we we enjoyed the gardens behind the pub. Tables and umbrellas amongst the trees. Order at the bar and the food is brought out to you. Dairy free, gluten free both available. Chicken goujons salad and chips, excellent [DF GF]. Mediterranean Lasagne, good. Chicken and bacon burger also got the 'good'. Unfortunately the kitchen closed before we could sample dessert.

Went the on the way home from York to avoid school holiday Friday and was impressed at the quality. Grass fed rump steak, steak and mushroom pie and black pudding fritters all fantastic. Good quality ingredients down simply but very tasty... surprisingly unusual these days. Busy pub with lovely garden... recommend.

Had a visit on a quiet Monday night. Barmaid was very pleasant and we enjoy some lovely gin. The menu looked fab so would like to return for food. Dog friendly in the front bar :)

Just a quick note to let you all know that the Highwayman does not serve food on Mondays. On Monday, it’s open 6pm to closing time. Tuesday to Sunday -open all day.

Service was appalling. We travelled from Kirkbymoorside for a staff meal and it was a total waste of fuel and time. Food was nice but for what it was overpriced. The puddings were bulk buy from a well known warehouse and yet they charged a fortune for them. Rubbish.

Came here during a recent stay and was very quiet when we arrived but soon became a bustling hive of activity. Very friendly atmosphere, fantastic food and great staff. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a visit. Our eyes were bigger than our belly’s and we couldn’t eat everything we ordered. Very generous portions

I wanted to arrange a family meal for 14, age 2-90, from Hertfordshire. All arranged prior to visit. A lovely hot fresh meal, friendly staff. Good value. I would highly recommend.

We stopped off here on a visit to Sheriff Hutton (fascinating church and castle). Perfectly nice pub food but surprisingly for a Saturday there was hardly anyone else there.

My husband said he had never had such a delicious homemade pie. I daren't even try to compete after that! The service was very friendy and if we lived nearer we would be regulars and might even join in the Pub quiz.

Returned here after many years absence..... Shouldn't have left it so long ! an excellent roast dinner with the vegetables JUST right - neither mushy nor too al dente to enjoy ! We had Sunday roasts (pork) and a stilton and veg bake. There was a bowl of vegetables to share with the offer of more veg/potatoes if we wanted. It was good food and very good value. Nice large beer garden with an area for children to play football etc.

Having booked a table on Saturday 4th August at 8pm we arrived early to be told our table wasn't ready, no problem, we were early after all. 8pm our table still occupied but an alternative was given and we got the menus and told no burgers and no dishes with chilli, ok. Order taken, 3/4 of an hour later a very rude young man came and told us there were no pies (ordered by hubby) left, surely you should have known before then that there were no pies to fulfil our order? It's been very busy is all they could say. Well I'm sorry but good kitchen management should have told you as soon as that order went in that it couldn't be filled.

Lovely little pub,we where staying locally and called the pub to see if the could accommodate us at short notice after reading reviews on trip advisor,young girl booked 3 of us in for 6pm,the Resturant is very friendly and welcoming with very reasonable prices,wife had surf and turf and I had the chicken in garlic with hand cut chips and veg,large portions one of the best meals we have have had for a while

We were meeting family friends for a meal after not seeing them for a few years. This place is close to where they live so they chose it as obviously they know where the best place to eat is in their locality and they definitely picked a winner.

We made a return to the Highwayman after sometime as was told by a good friend that it was under new management or owners and was really good now so i pre booked for my Sons Birthday yesterday evening 20th June firstly i most say was cleaner and looked lighter and bright when entering sadly was not seated in Restaurant were i asked for a table was put in small room that was once a bar near door were people and staff walk past all the time... arrived at 6.50pm table booked 7pm was given menu and to ask if we could order drinks to the young staff who were sweet after ordering staff came back said no chicken left now as there menu had meals that we ordered with chicken we had to then re order not great for a restaurant to run out of chicken at 7pm.. But we took menu again and reordered ...

6 of us have just had fantastic food and service. A big thank you for a amazing Birthday meal. All our food was delicious from fish,steak pie,chicken,burger and fish pie all was served piping hot and to a fantastic standard with plenty off veg n chips. Highly recommended!!

We have eaten at the Highwayman many times since the present landlord opened the refurbished pub. There is always a very warn welcome and fabulous food. We must have visited at least thirty times and have never had to complain or send anything back. Dogs...

Situated on the main road into Sheriff Hutton, the Highwayman is the quintessential country pub, smallish rooms, old, dark wooden beams and a decent selection of beers. The service is fine and it's not too expensive. Where it lets itself down is the food. I don't mind pub grub but I don't like poorly prepared pub grub. The steak that was I served was well done when I asked for medium rare and the chips were soggy, overcooked and rather limp. Other dishes for our small group were similarly under par. It's a nice place and worth a visit if you are in the area but don't bank on high quality food.

Holidaying in Sherriff Hutton we were in walking distance of The Highwayman so called in on Saturday evening for a meal, as a four.This place has all the character and charm of a good ole English country pub and the hospitality and service ids second to none. We were promptly seated at table and our meals promptly delivered. Portions were of a good size and the meals well presented and delicious. The Theakstons served at the bar a very good beer.We have already paid a return visit and can highly recommend.

My wife and I were camping just down the road and booked a table to eat here on Saturday night. They had obviously been busy earlier since by 8 many dishes were sold out. I ended up with the hunters chicken which was very tasty - not too overpowering on the bbq flavour. It came with a large bowl of veg and also lovely brown, tasty chips.My wife had fish and chips which she enjoyed - the fish certainly was large!We shared a cheescake for dessert which was lovely. All in about £40 which was very reasonable. Would definitely recommend.Nice clean, smart toilets too if that sort of thing is important to you!

We went for an early tea to The Highwayman on the spur of the moment, this wasn't a problem as they were busy but they managed to fit us in. The staff are very friendly and are only too happy to help. The beer garden has plenty of tables to sit at and enjoy the summer weather. We ate in a small area near the bar which made it quite cosy and intimate. I had the homemade steak and mushroom pie and my husband had the gammon. Both were delicious and there was plenty of it !! We will be returning.
