Wanted to watch the football England Vs Switzerland so found this sports bar with our friends. We knew it was going to be busy so managed to get a table. After a few beers went to the toilet it was like a cocaine dealers shop I told the staff one went in and said nobody was in there but they were in the cubicle as nobody had came out after me all afternoon people were in there sniffing their little heads off bouncers and barstaff did nothing about it. So if you are a cokehead and enjoy that sort of stuff going on I recommend you go there as nobody gives a toss if you have a family or just a normal person swerve the place it's a unsafe dive!

Dropped into The Micklegate Pub as we were pub hopping down Micklegate and our visit was good. This is a big single roomed pub, great decor and furnishings,a solid wood serving bar dominates the main room,tv's and big screens to enjoy the sport and plenty of seating options,it's a good locals pub. We were here on a Wednesday night,we ordered Carling lager, served chilled ,we soaked up the great vibe in this busy and popular pub. Not my usual tipple, more a real ale and craft beer fan myself but the lager was cold, tasty and refreshing, really enjoyed it in here before we moved on and as on every other visit to here we had a great time. The Micklegate Pub is easy to locate along Micklegate,a street with lots of great pubs along. Opening hours are; Monday to Thursday,10am till 11pm. Friday & Saturday,10am till midnight. Sunday,10am till 11pm. Well worth checking out if you're in the area.

Very spacious with superb seating options throughout the whole bars interior with lots of TV screens dotted throughout the whole bars interior. We went here early in the evening and this bar was starting to get busy as they where showing a live football game.On our trip to here we had a Carling brewery lager each which where excellent and well priced. This is a decent bar in a great area of York and is well worth visiting. So easy to locate from Queen street bus stop its a short walk.(This is my first review of the Micklegate). This bar quickly became our local on a friends trip to York. Bright, spacious, lively and welcoming, there is a decent selection of drinks on offer and we found the staff friendly and tolerant of our lively group, even when our card games became quite noisy. The locals were generally very friendly too and there was some great banter due to our Scottishness. We will be back.

I won't be returning to this pub after my last visit. There's no social distancing in place. General Manager is rude and certainly doesn't know how to deal with people. I ordered one drink, it arrived flat and a strange taste. I assume bottle of the barrel. When i addressed the issues I was told basically to pipe down and just drink it. They argued that because 5-6 sips had already been taken they wouldn't accept replacing it. Due to Covid they also weren't prepared to "test it" which is fair play. I didn't buy another drink - I just left. 6 sips for the cost of 1 pint. Went next door, ordered the exact same pint and it was just right.

Went to beautiful York for a weekend away for my birthday. We went out an hour before our table was ready at a restaurant nearby but my daft husband didn’t think to book a table at a bar and this was the only place we could go. There was one poor guy doing table service and because we hadn’t been out drinking all afternoon and sat politely waiting for a drink the rowdy, un-socially distanced drinkers seemed to get his attention first. We managed to get one drink in the hour we were there. I know this is strange times but please, give the poor bloke a break and put more than him on table service duty. We would have spent double in your pub if we had just been a little more rowdy!! Ps expect a dose of COVID in your bar, people were not adhering to the rules and were wandering up to the bar and hugging old friends!!! 😬

It did get a bit noisy later on but we left. This is a cool pub,a great interior with great decor and furnishings including tv's to enjoy the sport and plenty of seating options spread throughout this pub, a great place to unwind in. We were here on rainy, cold Thursday night, greeted warmly by a very pleasant member of staff, after a quick study of the real ales we both opted to have a pale ale each, these were served in excellent condition, we just chilled out and took in the great pub we were in. My pale ale was outstanding, a crisp ,hoppy and well balanced pale ale bursting with taste, very easy to drink,a real ale style both myself and my twin brother Stephen really enjoy. The temperature is always spot on so you know you won't be uncomfortable. The bar staff are always quick, efficient and friendly. It's on the Stag/Hen run but that can add to the fun. Between matches or non sport days the music is upbeat without the dross "boom boom" that you get in other places and last but by no means least the bar!! Big potential but amber taverns seem to have lost interest in it. We visited when it first opened and were really impressed with the prices and quality of beer on offer. However, we have been back various times to be met by stroppy teenage staff that quite clearly don't want to be their, as for managers they seem non existent. The ale on sale again has big potential but i don't think it brings in enough money to be looked after properly. The majority of us refuse to go in the Micklegate, staff is everything but as stated it has huge potential that is not being met. Admittedly the the drink prices are very cheap (£2.30 for a pint of fosters) however i'd rather pay the extra and go else where for good service and better music. TS

We went in search of somewhere showing the England rugby match against Tonga, and we're directed here. The 'booths' are more just tables with banquettes or settees around them which were all crammed when we arrived, as there was a Man U game on. The pub is very much geared more to football, but they had a few TVs showing the rugby and a couple showing the boxing. You can obviously reserve TV spaces in advance which is good if you plan the night. The wine was average and reasonably priced. Once the footy finished the place emptied out and we were able to sit and watch the game on stools at a table near a TV. All in all, a good place to watch the sport with a friendly atmosphere and average service.

I'd agree with the below reviewer on the real ale front, but I disagree that they don't know their target demographic - they've actually got it spot on. This bar caters for sports fans, not ale enthusiasts - anyone taking their "craft beer" signs seriously has clearly selectively read the notices outside. The focus here is on sport.Private(ish) booths with their own TVs and LED-lined walls may seem excessive on a Sunday evening, but the managers will be raking it in on big match days.Clientele are your typical football crowd; read into this what you will.It wasn't our kind of party, but I don't doubt that this place will be a success.

It may be early days and this establishment needs to find its feet, but for a pub that is unashamedly trying to take advantage in the real ale boom this place is hugely disappointing.Amber Taverns have spent a huge amount of money on this place which looks good, but they have made the huge mistake of ignoring one of the key features - the real ale. You can't pay lip-service to real ale - either take it seriously or don't serve it at all. They've made the real ale very competitively priced but have taken no interest at all in the quality. The four pints myself and friends had when we were there - (all of us had a different real ale to compare) were kept and served so badly as to be almost undrinkable. There is no point in having 8 real ales on offer if you are going to alienate drinkers by your lack of cellarmanship. Let's hope someone gets their act together before it becomes just another Micklegate sports and lager bar that decent drinkers avoid. Given that most of the clientele were semi-enebriated stag and hen parties then maybe they're not really interested as long as they fill the tills...

Having booked a table, we had to wait at the bar for some while even to be welcomed, with people arriving after us being shown to tables before us. Once seated, it took a long time for anyone to take a drinks order, or to bring a drinks order, bring menus, etc. Indeed, so slow was the service that we decided that we would leave if our order hadn’t been taken within 10 minutes (having already waited some little while). In fact, it was taken within eight minutes! The food itself was lovely, but the service was chaotic, if friendly, and slow. There are much better places to eat in York.

My wife and myself have eaten here a fair few times. But never have been as wowwed as we were last night. The gentleman at front of house was impeccable. A credit to the pub. After surveying the specials menu we both decided that the shin of beef pie with champ mash and fresh veg sounded too good to be missed. We were not disappointed! We both said, quite possibly the best pub meal we have ever ever had! The beef was cooked perfectly, the short crust pastry was just incredible. My wife Lydia said it was just like her mum's. That's some credit to the chef! The champ mash was delicious and the veg cooked absolutely spot on. Not a second too long. Again, perfect! We were probably too full for dessert but we were never going to resist if the main was anything to go by. My wife chose the Eton mess. I've never seen anyone look so happy eating a dessert. It looked amazing and indeed it was. I chose the apple and blueberry crumble. Simple and delicious. Just how I like it. All washed down with two fine glasses of Primitivo. And all very reasonable too. Top marks to everyone at the pub. We most definitely will be back!

What a gem and reasonable prices , food was cooked to order so always fresh and hot , staff were really helpful and friendly, especially kerry and Amy We were staying inthe Travel lodge next door and there's a connecting door to get inside , no faults on the 4 days we used it for our evening meal

We called in while we were waiting for friends to arrive in York. The pizza was really good. Beer was good.
