Myself an my wife go out every other Thursday for a meal in local pubs. thr George was suggested to us by friends , but always considered it just a little too far to drive for an evening meal , How wrong I was. in a nutshell this pub rates as one of the best experiences w e have ever had. fromthe moment you alk through the door you are greeted with smiles from front of house. The young lady who looked after us tonight was the daughter of the landlord.her table manner was 10/10, seated us and then gave us plenty of time to settle in before returning for a drink order. she also took our food order in timely manner , which good as the menu is such a decision. never have I been to a pub with such a well flavoured menu of mouth watering combinations. mine was a smashed brisket burger , with goats cheese and chillijam -off the scale melt inyour mouth. my wife had hake on bacon matop top sh with cider and clam sauce, again outstanding- who makes upthese flavours , well actually the dad landlord chef, clearly an amazing palate this man posseses. in terms of pricethis was incredible. top end food youd expect in a london restaurant at a ridiculous price. 2 lg pinots 2 pints and 2 mains was 74 ( including the service which I topped further it was that good!) Bottom line : This is a superbly run family pub offering smiles and food that good youd be happy if you flew from scotland yet alone drive from Petworth. 12/10

Visited here for afternoon tea. Welcome was ok, but then we waited for a while to see if there was a free table. Bizarrely no one else was in the cafe and the upstairs service where we were seated was almost unfriendly and you felt you were in the way. When we asked for a spoon for our tea we were greeted with a huff and puff… Gets good reviews elsewhere, but sadly not from us..

Had lunch here and was very disappointed. The fish pie consisted of 3 king prawns, piece of cod about size of 50p , and a large quantity of mussels (which are molluscs) - all very tasteless. Where were the types of fish that should be in a fish pie? Also, half a lager shandy was ordered; the barman obviously didn't understand the request, even though it was repeated three times, as the drink arrived in a full pint glass.

Attended a wedding here and it was amazing! Gorgeous venue, quite quirky but tasteful. We had exclusive use of the premises so guests could sit by the fire in the lounge, or out on the terrace - with stunning views across the estate. Ceremony was in the music room, which was a little snug but made for a very personal atmosphere. Food and wine was delicious. The evening party was out in the courtyard with a canopy overhead (handy when the rain came later on!) and was dressed beautifully, with fairy lights in the trees and candles on the tables. They even had a supply of blankets for when the evening chill came. I want to pay tribute to the staff - most of whom were quite young - they were so friendly, helpful and professional. Nothing was too much trouble for them, and everything was done with a smile. The whole day went without any snags (that we were aware of) and made the day so special for the bride and groom.

Popped in for lunch following a walk to the Halnaker Windmill. Managed to get the last table available. I had the "lunchtime" size fish and chips with tartare sauce and mushy peas and my partner had the gammon, egg and chips. Both were very good. The "lunchtime" size fish and chips was a perfect size. My partner then had the crumble and ice cream and I had a mini version with custard and a flat white coffee. All very good too. Friendly staff and a great menu. A good selection of alcohol free beers. Definitely one to visit again when in the area, would book in advance.

The service is wonderful - we could not fault the front of house team. The food was terrible - bread served with poor quality olive oil and vinegar… the bread was sliced and not fresh (certainly not ‘artisan’). Starters - prawn cocktail was the out right winner… my smoked salmon was served with 2 small thinnest slices of soda bread I have ever had… butter came in a packet and only after we asked for it. The mains were awful… we sent the soufflé back as it was like an omelette. Only to be told that the chef’s response was “it comes like that”. We used to dine at the sister restaurants in Christchurch which are infinitely better. This is a very poor relation and we would not go again. The front of house team were excellent but sadly that doesn’t fill an empty tum.

A new standard in excellence! You ask for it and they will provide! Ordered the George burger for dinner..... with extra burger, extra bacon and 2 x eggs and what an absolute MONSTER it was! Cooked to perfection with crispy fries and slaw. The new chef is making his mark and it's well worth checking out.

Ate there for lunch in January and had the parsnip dumplings. Dry as bone, no sauce to speak of. Bland, bland, bland. Parents had fish which was dry and overcooked. The only salvation was our charming waiter who couldn't do enough to redeem the situation. Sadly, he was unable to change the menu or dishes. Seems like we weren't the only guests to complain about the dishes. Apparently, the chef does not take kindly to negative feedback, so staff are reluctant to tell him! How ridiculous. Come on folks, for the price you command, you can do MUCH better than this please. We've eaten there before and had a very pleasant meal.

I have been visiting for the past 28 or so years - lovely quaint tearoom - decor not changed at all but this is the way I like it - lovely private garden - I always have the brown fruit scones which are lovely and their welsh rarebit is really tasty - yes its expensive but worth it - no nasties in the food!
