The George in Chichester

Myself an my wife go out every other Thursday for a meal in local pubs. thr George was suggested to us by friends , but always considered it just a little too far to drive for an evening meal , How wrong I was. in a nutshell this pub rates as one of the best experiences w e have ever had. fromthe moment you alk through the door you are greeted with smiles from front of house. The young lady who looked after us tonight was the daughter of the landlord.her table manner was 10/10, seated us and then gave us plenty of time to settle in before returning for a drink order. she also took our food order in timely manner , which good as the menu is such a decision. never have I been to a pub with such a well flavoured menu of mouth watering combinations. mine was a smashed brisket burger , with goats cheese and chillijam -off the scale melt inyour mouth. my wife had hake on bacon matop top sh with cider and clam sauce, again outstanding- who makes upthese flavours , well actually the dad landlord chef, clearly an amazing palate this man posseses. in terms of pricethis was incredible. top end food youd expect in a london restaurant at a ridiculous price. 2 lg pinots 2 pints and 2 mains was 74 ( including the service which I topped further it was that good!) Bottom line : This is a superbly run family pub offering smiles and food that good youd be happy if you flew from scotland yet alone drive from Petworth. 12/10

My daughter booked a table for 8 of us to celebrate her birthday. Staff kindly intercepted us on arrival and took her birthday cake from us for them to bring out later. Service was faultless, as was the food. If I had one piece of feedback it would be to ask that there are more vegetarian options on the menu. We had a lovely afternoon, lovely environment, great food and service. Thank you.

We have eaten here several times and our visit for Sunday lunch was probably the best visit yet. Service friendly as always. The pork belly cooked to perfection and all the various roasts eaten were well made with generous portions. Don’t hesitate to come here for Sunday lunch

Friendly and efficient staff. Good service, excellent food (belly pork either potato and bacon rosti and a wonderful rich and plentiful gravy) and at reasonable price. Add to that a traditional, welcoming English pub and you could not ask for more. Outstanding. One of the best pub dining experiences I have had.

Rapidly becoming my favourite pub/restaurant. Today’s highlights were the amazing brisket burger and a mojito cheesecake but everyone else’s food was equally good. The staff were friendly and helpful when dealing with dietary requirements. Around £30 a head for two courses and drinks is top value for good of this quality. Recommended.

As I always do, I looked for off the beaten track cosy village pubs who have a good ale and food (Sunday Roast) reputation.... this venue stood out, so I booked a table for two (12:30 25/8). Nice car park at the rear, road parking at the front. Greeting from staff was lovely, shown to the table, drinks ordered... 2 different cask ales.... excellent start. We ordered one roast chicken, and one pork belly roast..... food was outstanding, seriously perfectly cooked meat and veg ( caraway carrots, spiced cauli, roast beetroot, cabbage).... potatoes to die for, Yorkshire pudding good size but not too big.....gravy perfect. Dessert was the outstanding Apricot and Amaretto crumble with custard, I would have it again today if I hadn't already driven back to Somerset this morning. We visit family in this area fairly regularly, we will return for sure.

My husband asked ChatGPT for ‘a good Sunday Roast near me’ and it came up with The George. It was actually 40 minutes away but the reviews were good so we booked. The setting is beautiful, it is a lovely country pub. The service was exceptional. The food was quick to arrive. Two roast beef done to perfection with crispy potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, five well cooked vegetables and plenty of tasty gravy. The deserts were lovely especially the apricot and amaretto crumble. All very reasonable for the price. We will definitely be back.

Oh my days what a little gem this pub is. The pub is just lovely on the inside and I expect is magical in the winter. It’s also very clean and roomy. The food was totally delicious and the best I’ve eaten in a long time. Also the portions were very generous too. Great value for money. The staff were professional and friendly. Dogs welcome. Nothing seemed too much trouble. A wonderful lunch. We only picked it as it was a half way meeting point with friends. What a find.

Due to road closures we ended up driving past this pub on Wednesday and decided to pop in for a bite to eat, we had the most warm welcome by a lovely bunch of people service was excellent and the food outstanding, what an amazing find!

Not a pub to visit for the bar atmosphere or a feeling of welcome on the night myself and a local friend visited, polite and friendly younger lad served, after that he disappeared and a very cold prescience in the form of a mature woman who seemed to be in charge , no acknowledgments or any contact for the next 2 hours, whilst we sat at the bar with empty glasses. We were studiously completely ignored by this extremely rude person. We waited until a very polite young waitress from presumably the restaurant finally made eye contact. The icy one still maintained her glare! I suppose no one knows what is going on in peoples lives but an awful attitude to customers apart from the 2 young staff encountered.

Great atmosphere, really nice food. Very efficient service from booking the table to food on the table. Plenty of choice, couldn't fault the experience. Will definitely return.

We found The George such a lovely welcoming comforting experience. With my husband an ex chef and me having worked in hospitality for around 35 years we sort of have our expectations and standards…but we are most definitely not snobs!! The George ticked all the boxes being…Welcoming, beautiful interior, cosy comfortable tables, fine details in the furnishings, delicious food, fabulous service, a great wine list along with a fantastic Gin list… I can only give five stars …we want to go there more often and we will do!

We had a fantastic Valentines day lunch at the George. It was our first visit having recently moved into the area. Great food & great service. We will definitely be back.

I hate to be negative but it's not really a pub in the traditional sense. It's a yet another lovely old pub gone all gastro, which to be frank is a bit samey nowadays. We stopped by after a long country walk for a quick stiffner only to be told no tables were available unless they were booked in advance. Shame.

We really enjoyed both the atmosphere in the restaurant and the food. I had a minced beef and onion pie with mash and made sure that my plate was wiped clean before allowing waitress to take it away. My friend was just as keen on his Indonesian curry.

My other half and I came for a Sunday roast at the George which was delicious we visit the George often but have never been for a roast, the roast beef was exceptional especially the quality of the beef, my wife had the pork belly which was extremely good the pork was cooked to perfection beautiful crackling on top huge portions, excellent service and atmosphere very cosy with three fires… wish we had space for dessert as they looked awesome Thank you for an amazing lunch

We went to the George for Christmas dinner, what value for money. The food and staff were fantastic, we cannot thank them enough for a wonderful Christmas Day meal. We will come again. We loved the whole experience

We have dinned in the George for many years, and have always had great meals. This time however was different. The roast pork dish has been one of our favourite for a while now. You always got a nice square pice of pork and the bacon and potato rosti was also excellent. But now, not so. I will start with the starter. We had salt and pepper Squid £8.95 Really! three small pieces of Squid with siracha mayo. Yes three small pieces that was tough as old boots and had a lot of the coating missing. Now Squid is one of the cheapest thing you can buy. but pubs charge so much and give you really stingy portions. I go to thai places where the Squid is so succulent and the coating nice and crispy. You also get a nice size portion for about £6.50 four times the amount that pubs serve, so a lot of profit. The pork is always fantastic here but now we all got served a small slice. Not a patch on what we used to get, so again poor value for money. Such a shame as many people talked about your pork. We know things have gone up. That, incidentally was why you turned the heating off just after &pm and we get that. And then you put this ridiculous service charge on all your meals. This is not America where the waitress get paid next to nothing. This is England and we like to tip. Because you pay your staff, you do not need to do this and it embarrasses people to have to ask for you to take it off.

Disastrous lunch! Our group consisted of six adults and two young children. Slow to take our order for drinks and food, waited over an hour for the starter to come, two of our group had to leave because the children were so restless. Waiting staff did their best I’m sure but woefully inadequate number of either chefs or waiters for such a day full of group bookings. Manager needs to pull his/her finger out and stop trying to run the place on the cheap.

What a lovely hidden gem! We were given a gift voucher for the George so this was our first visit. Beautiful place- very homely feel and very pretty both inside and out.
