The service is wonderful - we could not fault the front of house team. The food was terrible - bread served with poor quality olive oil and vinegar… the bread was sliced and not fresh (certainly not ‘artisan’). Starters - prawn cocktail was the out right winner… my smoked salmon was served with 2 small thinnest slices of soda bread I have ever had… butter came in a packet and only after we asked for it. The mains were awful… we sent the soufflé back as it was like an omelette. Only to be told that the chef’s response was “it comes like that”. We used to dine at the sister restaurants in Christchurch which are infinitely better. This is a very poor relation and we would not go again. The front of house team were excellent but sadly that doesn’t fill an empty tum.

Don't recognise Annie W's review. I had the same food plus pudding and it was very good. Portions are small but it's a £29.70 set menu for 3 courses so I wasn't expecting a huge meal and neither did I want one pre-theatre. The four generous blobs of smoked salmon mousse were delicious. Pickled cucumber and fennel went with it well. Thin pastry base interesting and didn't go soggy but would have preferred melba toast. Think it was gluten free pastry, hence firmness. Lots of fresh peas (possibly frozen but definitely not processed) surrounded the crusted fish and there were bits of tasty bacon among the peas too. The potatoes tasted new to me. Rather perfect rounds but definitely too firm to be tinned. Pudding involved raspberries, a coulis, ice cream and something else. It was pretty and delicious. Staff lovely and service prompt. Loos clean and fresh.

A friend and I had lunch prior to a matinee at the theatre and had the two-course menu at £19.95. We both chose the salmon mousse, 4 piped splodges, was it salmon? Piled high with disgusting pickled type onion and cucumber mix sitting on bread that wasn’t soft and wasn’t melba toast, you couldn’t cut it. Main course we both chose the crusted cod – no real crust but the fish was beautifully cooked, but such a small piece. This was served with what appeared to be 4 small balls of tinned potatoes with no flavor and swimming in processed peas. The whole meal was bland and totally unimaginative. The only saving grace was a very nice glass of rose wine and of course Meg the waitress who was fantastic, attentive and apologetic. We left hungry and hugely disappointed. Maybe your award-winning chef patron Alex Aitken wasn’t overseeing last Wednesday, certainly nothing was ‘seasonal or fresh’ apart from the cod. We will not be returning

Catch of the day, bream, chosen by three of us, was overcooked, dry, and difficult to cut. The new potatoes were quite nice but the samphire was tough and stringy and arrived in a huge heap, as if it were a vegetable accompaniment instead of a garnish. The salsa verde should have had bite but was tasteless. I enjoyed my chocolate fondant. Service was good but we didn’t understand why the food was so poor when the restaurant was almost empty.

Ordered from the pre theatre menu 3 courses.Waited 30 mins for starter had to ask when it would be arriving!.as we didn’t want to have to rush to go to the afternoon theatre show. The waitress was really good and rushed it for us.Had to ask again when the second corse would be coming by this time we would be rushing so cancelled our third course !! 2 meals were good one meal wasn’t as described on menu missing parts of meal..did complain to waitress(not her fault ) she only charged for 2 of the meals.Very disappointing the restaurant wasn’t busy so obviously the chef couldn’t cope in his kitchen,Wouldn’t recommend if you planning to eat before going to the theatre. The table next to us had the same issue.

I stumbled across this restaurant and was not disappointed. I had potted ham hock with warm bread and a nice chutney which was delicious followed by a very nice Shepherds Pie. The service was quick and friendly. The only negatives were the main was a bit on the small side and there was no draught lager available. Will definitely return.

Lovely Sunday lunch with my partner. Great ambience, friendly team, fabulous service. Portion sizes were good and the meal was very well presented and tasty. Would highly recommend.

Great evening with friends. The hotel is beautiful and a great atmosphere for a night out at their DJ night. Music not too loud though so you can still enjoy a meal in the restaurant. After making a special journey in to Chichester to visit The Ship for afternoon tea we were very disappointed. The festive tea certainly didn’t live up to expectations .We were given 4 savoury options one being a savoury scone with salmon .This was so hard we couldn’t eat it .The sausage roll was supposed to come with an onion chutney none arrived .There were four sweet options on the menu and only three came .The scones that arrived were also very hard and overcooked .Offered with a winter berry jam and a mulled fruit compote which we did not receive .We did complain to our waitress who was very nice and did reduce our bill .We certainly wouldn’t recommend this to anybody .

I will be contacting them direct as we didn't discuss it at the time, but the food was very poor. Dhal dish and coq au vin at £21 and £22 respectively were hugely overpriced. The coq au vin bore no resemblance to what was expected. I saw another table being served a small overcooked basket of fries so it wasn't just us. Lovely friendly accomodating service sadly let down by what came out of the kitchen. The dj at 645pm wasn't great either. Felt like we were dining in a disco. Left feeling ripped off. As locals we have consumed lovely meals here in the past, so I'm not sure what has happened to the food. Maybe it was an off day, but sadly we won't be returning soon.

We had an excellent afternoon tea, with a good variety of tasty treats and all made in the hotel kitchen, what a talented chef! I’m especially pleased by the gluten and dairy free food that was prepared and given to me, it consisted of a lovely variety of open sandwiches, scones, a tart, cakes and mousse. How wonderful that hey took the time to make my food as special as the normal food. I definitely recommend the afternoon tea here.

From the welcome as we arrived to the decor, service and food this was a lovely experience and well worth every penny. We chose the Ship as it’s a two minute walk from my son’s home We all left stating that it was the best family dinner we had eaten for many years. Staff were friendly and efficient and they have managed to master great service without it feeling contrived. The decor is stunning and the restaurant is comfortable and spacious. We were a group of six including a toddler and a young child and the menu catered for us all. We were quickly served drinks and the waiter asked if we wanted the children’s food with ours or when it was ready. The children’s menu has established favourites and healthy options. Three of us had roasts and the Yorkshire puddings and gravy were highly rated. The food arrived hot and with generous portions The fish and chips were perfect - crispy batter and golden chips with an enormous piece of fish. Most of us managed dessert and we were not disappointed - the vanilla ice cream is the creamiest that I have ever tasted. There was a milestone birthday being celebrated and this was acknowledged with a decorated plate of home made strawberry and lychee sweets - thank you. We expected the bill to be a lot higher than it was. We normally go to country pubs for Sunday lunch and expected the bill to be maybe a bit higher than these venues but we paid less for much better food and service This is a perfect venue for delicious food. Even with two small children we were all able to relax and enjoy the experience. I don’t remember individual staff’s names but everyone was friendly and professional with excellent front of house skills. Thank you and I have already started recommending you.

Having visited Chichester many times over recent years to t ake breakfast, and in doing so, I like to think, my wife and I have become quite critical and complementary of what is the best meal of the day. Having said all of that I can say without fear of contradiction that the full English at the Ship is the best in Chichester and that we will back very shortly. The staff are very pleasant and nothing is too much trouble.

I’m possibly too over-cautious when it comes to hotel restaurants. In my experience they tend to fall into two categories – jazzed-up pub grub, or “wannabe” Michelin types, (or even actual Michelin types). I particularly dislike the chefs who are on a mission to impress. They’re (mostly) a talented bunch but I’m usually so hungry an hour after a “showcase” dinner, that the snacks in the hotel minibar get raided. I’m happy to say that the excellent Ship doesn’t fall into any of those two categories. My Cider Braised Pigs Cheeks were two deliciously tender nuggets of pork, sat on top of some mashed potato, with a quite delicious apple salsa. I expected something a little lighter (in colour) but the pork had a deep-brown richness, that promised bags of flavour and it delivered. The meat was so tender, you could have cut it by blowing on it - utterly delicious. My wife had the Twice-Baked Cheese Soufflé which was a textbook example of how this dish should be – again, utterly delicious. For the main, my wife chose the rib-eye steak which was again, cooked as requested and accompanied by some deliciously crisp and tasty fries. She was a little underwhelmed by the peppercorn sauce. The star of the show, (in my opinion at least), was my Duck a l’orange. It’s been years since I ate this former dinner party favourite and this was a very fine example indeed. The duck breast was cooked perfectly and the accompanying sauce was light, orangey and not overpowering. The beans and asparagus that accompanied it were fine, as were the two nuggets of fondant potato. I can’t recall what my wife had for dessert. I had the ubiquitous Sticky Toffee Pudding which was excellent. I only had one criticism and I’m sure this won’t bother most people in the slightest. The limited wine selections on the menus are listed by grape varietal and price only. These are all available by the glass. It was only when we got back to the room that I noticed an online wine list with considerably more choice. The sight of a Barolo from one of my favourite producers was a bitter disappointment. That bottle would have complimented our two mains courses perfectly. I should have asked were the choices on the menus the only wine choices available? My fault for not asking. Service was perfect and the setting relaxed and informal. By the end of our three night stay I was regretting pre-booking the other two restaurants in Chichester. I would have liked to eat at the Ship for at least one of those remaining two nights, (especially having read the online wine list). The Harbour Hotel is an excellent hotel and in the Ship, a restaurant that matches the hotel’s excellence.

I'm afraid the dessert was a bit of a disaster. Was told that only 3 items available on dessert menu - fruit crumble with custard, sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream or just ice-cream. I chose the crumble, then was told that custard was not actually available so I opted for the clotted cream. Partner chose sticky toffee pud with clotted cream. When the 'crumble' came out there was no crumble on it - just a bowl of warm fruit. The cream wasn't cream either, it was creme fraiche, which was also served with the toffee pud. We sent them both back and told them to forget it. The chef insisted that it WAS CREAM, but, after arguing the case, accepted their mistake, having apparently misread the package!?? They offered a complimentary coffee by way of apology. After waiting 15 minutes for that (the restaurant was virtually empty!) we stormed out. What a disappointment for what is a lovely hotel. Only very minor issues with breakfast but otherwise that was good.

Early supper after a matinee at Chichester Festival Theatre. Availed ourselves of their pre theatre menu despite having just been! It's good value (£20 for two courses, £25 for three courses). Menu is limited (three selections for each course) but is covers most bases. The food was good and the service engaging. We also had a very nice wine. Crockery is trendy but a bit impractical. Starters came on really small plates and the poor waitress had difficulty clearing them away with full size cutlery so dropped most of the cutlery. The desserts came on huge plates too which made the portions look a bit mean (but they did taste good!). It was quiet (only a few tables occupied) so relaxed. I imagine if busier with all hard surfaces, it could be quite jarring.

I stayed her for my daughters wedding. The staff were great. The venue for a wedding was lovely. Unfortunately if you stay and it's warm weather the rooms are very hot at night. As this is an old building there isn't any air conditioning. They do supply a fan but the windows are limited on how far you can open them. I also found the cleanliness of the room wasn't great along with linen and towels that had holes in them. On reporting our problems they did give us a small reduction in price. I personally wouldn't stay here again.

Ate here for the first time this evening & really enjoyed it. The hotel & restaurant are both beautifully decorated & very clean. Our server was Evie, who was very polite, attentive, professional & really pleasant to deal with. We had the cheese souffle & seafood cocktail for starters & both were delicious! The souffle was very cheesy & the seafood cocktail had a generous amount of prawns. We then had the cod & mussels for our mains & both were very tasty & perfectly cooked. There was also a very generous portion of mussels. For desserts we had sticky toffee pudding and the chocolate & coffee ganache & both were exceptional! We also dealt with another server & a Manager & both were really lovely & professional. Overall the service was excellent & the food was amazing. Will very happily return & recommend to others. Some of the breakfast was buffet style with hot food and drinks ordered at the table. Everything was fresh and spot on for us. When our hot food was brought to us we received an apology for the wait but it wasn't necessary, we were quite happy sitting in the beautiful bright restaurant and we'd already had fruit salad, toast, ham and cheese so we weren't exactly left without! They have obviously changed the portion size to match the government eat out campaign. We had surf and turf which was a thin small piece of steak with two pathetic , allegedly prawns, but more like scrimps. The cod size wouldn’t feed a child and...

Came to the restaurant for a meal. The food in terms of taste I couldn't fault and the presentation was good. However, the portion size of the surf and turf was very disappointing. When the menu says pawns, you'd hope to have more than just...

Kiki was a very attentive bar tender when myself and some friends came in for a drink. She made us some fantastic cocktails (I mean REALLY fantastic) and looked after us all night whilst be alone on the bar.

We had a very pleasant three course meal. They were very accommodating, there were more veggie options for me than I expected, and the food was great (a very tasty veggie bolognese) and so was the service! So was the choice of gin!

Went for our first trip out post-Lockdown last week; felt very safe, the team have clearly put in a huge effort with the extra precautions. Service and food was still great despite the challenging circumstances. Looking forward to our next visit!

Afternoon chips and beer, very busy, parking can be tight, area to side, hard to see, small area adjacent to front entrance where a small terrace of tables are located, chips with diesel! Chips and cider were excellent The inside is quirky, well laid out with a lot of local history posted on the walls.

Popped in for lunch following a walk to the Halnaker Windmill. Managed to get the last table available. I had the "lunchtime" size fish and chips with tartare sauce and mushy peas and my partner had the gammon, egg and chips. Both were very good. The "lunchtime" size fish and chips was a perfect size. My partner then had the crumble and ice cream and I had a mini version with custard and a flat white coffee. All very good too. Friendly staff and a great menu. A good selection of alcohol free beers. Definitely one to visit again when in the area, would book in advance.

Very disappointed in my Scrambled egg on brown toast, the egg had no taste very pale done in the microwave, and water on my plate made my barely toasted toast wet and soggy. Great pleasant staff. Service good but unfortunately the breakfast was horrible.

We often visit this Greggs whilst shopping in Chichester as their sausage rolls are the best. As I don’t drink dairy milk, in the past I’ve always had soya in little cartons. My husband asked for oat milk (my favourite) and to my pleasant surprise Greggs now offer oat milk as an alternative. So my order was for an Americano with oat milk on the side. My husband also mentioned “on the side”. This is because I don’t take much so need to add it myself. So when the lady served an Americano with oat included (frothed up, yuk) (Since when does an Americano have warm frother milk in it?) I said, no I ordered oat milk on the side. Stroppy cow said she didn’t hear that (we said it twice) and that anyway they don’t serve oat milk on the side. So I’ve paid for a coffee that I can’t drink as it’s too milky. I really expected her to say “sorry madam, let me do another one for you”. I mean, for the sake of customer satisfaction, just pour it away and serve me what I’ve asked for! Is it too much to ask to have oat milk on the side? This is a first for us. Every other coffee establishment we visit serves it cold, and on the side when asked. She has no customer skills at all. A right stroppy cow. We were disgusted.

We popped in without a reservation on a Saturday lunchtime and luckily they had a table for us. The pub was buzzing with happy people, clearly lots of locals too which is always a good sign. We had three courses - hadn’t planned to but the food was just soooo good! The prawn cocktail was the best we’ve ever had, and mains were delicious. OH had sea bass and I had lambs liver. Both served piping hot and with fresh veg. One of my main beefs is when food isn’t hot enough. Not so here, well done Berkeley Arms. The sticky toffee pudding was to die for too. We live 20 mins away but we’ll most definitely be back!
