I have been visiting for the past 28 or so years - lovely quaint tearoom - decor not changed at all but this is the way I like it - lovely private garden - I always have the brown fruit scones which are lovely and their welsh rarebit is really tasty - yes its expensive but worth it - no nasties in the food!

The cafe my Mum and I had planned to go to was closed so being tight for time in my lunch break, St Martin’s was the next closest cafe. There’s a lot I could pick on but the main reason for this review is the ridiculous prices. I ordered a soup and was asked if I wanted bread or toast, thinking they were asking if I would prefer my bread toasted or not, not if I was willing to pay £1.30 for something that comes as standard with soup everywhere else, then the bread didn’t even come with any butter. There was no seasoning on the table and the soup was too salty. The Welsh rarebit was tiny and these two mini lunches came to just under £20!!! We downed our tap waters and left as quickly as we could. Zero value for money!

The expression, mutton dressed as lamb, rings true here. The prices are high because you are paying for small portions of meagre fayre but its organic and if you dare criticise you get the bog standard, tardy, snooty and aloof reply. This unimagine choice for customer service should give you enough clues of how tepid, uninspiring and dull this place is. Even dementors avoid here as there is no soul to suck. Better places in the town with better service and better food. Life is too short to spend a second in this place. The cutlery has more personality than the manger and staff.AVOID LIKE DEATH

The only people who benefited from our visit were the owners. Shocking prices, shockingly small portions, charged extra even for milk for the tea. Asked for a disabled toilet - told to go up two flights of stairs. Listed buildings apparently cannot provided disabled facilities. Been in other listed buildings, so I know this isn't true. I agree with another reviewer - there are far nicer cafes in Chichester. It isn't about being willing to pay for the organic quality produce - it is about objecting to the quality of the overpriced produce on offer. Ambience can only get you so far. I expect this review will generate the stock response seen elsewhere on this site - another example of the owner not bothering to individualise. Three people who will not come back here for sure.

This was our favourite place in Chichester and we still hope to return but will have to be for a very special treat now. It was a bit more expensive before but was happy to pay as it is organic and such a great experience - far more so than any other cafe I have been in! Last time we went, however, we had to turn away as the increase in price was just beyond what we could easily afford to play (drinks and cake would have been more than the lunch we had elsewhere that day). I would have preferred to email them direct and this is my first review on TripAdvisor - it is more of a plea to the owners to not make it so expensive that normal people cannot afford to come in. We eat organic at home and it really is not that much more. I hope you do not continue to lose business because we hope to be able to continue to visit. The cakes, if you are sugar free or gluten free are, in my opinion, the best in Chichester. The mains items are quite small portions and as mentioned elsewhere you have to add on everything as extras. If you like quirky you will love this place!

This was not a positive experience for my daughter and I. Whilst the building is fun and quirky, spread over multiple floors and with board games on offer, the food was disappointing and the bill quite shocking. Whilst I understand there is a premium to be paid for organic healthy food, this was far beyond what I expected. Portions were disappointingly small, though some of the food was so stodgy that we couldn't have eaten more. My daughter didn't like her cheese rarebit nor her currant scone! The choice of dishes on offer was also very limited.Overall there are better, tastier & cheaper alternatives nearby. We will not be returning.

Pretentious and expensive. We had Welsh rarebit which cost a tenner. It was small and served on a tea plate with a tiny portion of salad. It was tasteless. The cafe is dark and dingy. Food and drink choices are very limited and they seem to think that making food peppery makes it special....wrong. Wish we had gone to Costa where we had a great cup of coffee and could have had a much tastier light lunch for a third of the price. I cannot believe how wonderful this place thinks it is!

Popped in for lunch, prices are far too high, especially £1.50 for 4 slices of egg as a side dish even if it is organic. Organic food doesn't have to cost the earth. Disturbed by drilling & hammering taking place 2 ft from the table - why couldn't this be done when the coffee shop is closed? Unlikely to recommend. Please do not reply with your repetitive standard response, it is not informative having already read this at our table. The coffee was nice but it's unlikely to draw us back just for coffee.

St Martin’s Coffee House is a traditional coffee house with the addition of food. What they offer is their own take on hot and cold fare, principally organic vegetarian with some vegan and gluten free options. The Coffee House is sited in one of the old brick and timber buildings for which Chichester is well known. There are open wood burning fires, timbered ceilings, small pane windows, creaky wooden floors and staircases, and a beautifully planted cottage garden . . . overall, a delightful atmosphere.

I have walked past St Martin's Coffee House many times and never noticed it before, but this morning it was wet and we had no coats so decided to pop in for a quick coffee. Thank goodness it was raining because I would have never discovered this gem. It's not very often I find a cafe that has anything I can eat due to a very restricted diet, but at St Martin's I was spoiled for choice and it all looked delicious. We shared a piece of walnut cake and it was perfect. It is a charming place with very friendly staff, a beautiful cottage garden at the back with plenty of seating. I totally love their philosophy of 'clean' eating. We will be back for sure to sample their delights.

Usually I love this place, but unfortunately the coffee is now much weaker than it's ever been, the salad is a sad shadow of its former self ie no nuts +beetroot or salsa and a strong ginger flavour recently added, and to make matters worse the price of coffee has shot up and the light meals when salad is added are also pretty pricey now.

Very disappointing - such a difference in quality and quantity from a visit a year ago. Then, Dragon nut cake was cohesive, attractive and full of flavour and served with an interesting salad - followed by a moist chocolate & ginger cake with a dollop of iced fruit puree (no extra charge). Last week, visiting with a guest, I anticipated similar fare but was very disappointed. An ugly crumbling dragon cake with massive hazlenuts stuck on top and which tasted dry and lacked flavour, was served with just one grilled tomato and there was an extra charge for that tomato - £9.95 for what was a nut burger and one tomato. The chocolate & ginger cake was lack lustre and on the dry side. There was also an extra charge for a dollop of iced fruit puree. The tortilla for my guest was thinner than wafer-thin and unlike the photo of a plump tortilla. Such an unsatisfying contrast in terms of quality, quantity and value. A great shame because the interior and garden of the coffee house is delightful, as are the log fires. The ingredients may be organic, but the items ordered were still inordinately over priced and the quality compromised. It is also disappointing to read the rather unpleasant comments made by the management in response to some critical reviews. Not good PR for what was a beautiful, refined and delightful coffee house.

Found this by way of billboards advertisement on main st otherwise would never have found it by chance. Loved it from the moment I walked in. Note, no prams are allowed so it’s a good place for adult conversation with a peaceful relaxing ambiance. The man serving was more than happy to show me the book on the history of the building and tell me more and encouraged me to have a look around the rooms and garden. Open fires, wooden pews, tables and chairs abound with beamed ceilings etc. I bet this place is so cosy in the winter. We ordered drinks only. Can’t remember the price but we enjoyed. The food is mostly organic and the cost reflects the quality ingredients. We returned the following day for more coffee. If I lived there I would go weekly. Love it. We came here for the first time having seen a sign in North Street. We loved the open fire and the smell of it was devine. We both had the Welsh rarebit which was very good, although the texture of the bread was a little odd. The coffee was very good and we were served hot milk with it. The building is very old and cosy, although I suspect some of the decor has been there since the current occupants - since the 1970s they state on a notecard on the table. Two rarebits and two coffees came to £30 so it is very expensive, however you have to factor in that everything is organic and home made.

The food itself is lovely - I couldn't fault it, but the cost is ridiculous. Years ago you'd start with a reasonably sized Welsh rarebit, before the owner decided to make the plates smaller so you got less food. Then, on one small plate you'd get a Welsh rarebit and on another you'd get a salad, but again the owner became mean and decided to combine the two so it all comes on one plate. Again, the amount you get is reduced but the price is the same. This month, he decided to keep the small combined plate, but raised the price of, effectively, one piece of bread and some salad from £10 to £12. Two rare bits with salad and one drink cost nearly £30. It's a joke.

Lovely old building housing a real old fashioned coffee shop - beams, open fire, antiquated seating and customers who look as though they might have been born on them. Strangely, the coffee was not the best that you can get locally, and I was shocked to be charged 20 pence for a splash of milk to go with my tea. I know its all organic in this place, but you can buy a litre of the stuff for well under a quid. That was a rip-off and quite unnecessary, as prices are not cheap to start with. There is a piano that customers are encouraged to play, which can be disconcerting when you hear it being attacked by someone of no particular skill. Finally, having been informed that it was strictly counter service only, why did we see people being served to their tables?

Tucked away off the main shopping streets of Chichester is this beautiful gem of a tea shop. I am not going to insult this lovely place by calling it a cafe. It is so much more than that. This is a quirky little tea room that is steeped in history. Wonky floors, rooms off of rooms and steep staircases make this a truly individual place to visit and it feels like you have stepped back in time. There is a lovely selection of home-made cakes to accompany your tea or coffee. As we sat enjoying our tea and cake someone sat down and started to play the piano. He then left and shortly afterwards a couple of guys began playing guitar. They were playing relaxing music that was in no way intrusive and we were still able to chat. Such a lovely addition to this delightful place. A couple of things to note. Firstly this place does not take credit cards so cash only (well it was when we visited) and the second thing is that the toilets are located on the top floor, up several flights of very steep stairs, so not for anyone with mobility problems who needs the loo! If you are in Chichester looking for some refreshment then forego the coffee shop chains for a little bit of history in a truly unique place. If this has been useful to you please give a helpful vote. Thanks

This is a good place to have coffee if you have an hour or so to spare. Unfortunately many people don't have that luxury - their time is important. So it's a shame that the service is so slow - long queues and when you eventually get to the front, it still seems to take an age actually to get the drinks. However, I was surprised when our meals arrived - very small portions on dessert plates! And then we ordered a slice of cake each at £4.95 per slice and not very big slices either. Also they charged extra for milk with our tea - I don't think I've ever experienced that before. I felt it was all a bit mean! A shame really as it's a lovely place with a really nice 'olde worlde' atmosphere.

The building is fantastic - like a Tardis. Definitely somewhere to curl up with a good coffee and a book, or to sit and work over a lunch of bread and soup.

It's a little like stepping back in time to come here, but very enjoyable. I meet with a couple of friends every few months and we generally come here, it's wholesome food and quaint surroundings. There's a piano for customers to try out, which is a nice touch for those who can play. Staff are very nice, dressed in long pinafores, log fires burn and it is all very quaint. See you again in a few months!

visited as part of a family group. The restaurant itself is situated close to the centre and in a lovely building. There are a few vegetarians/vegans in our group, and, as one of the vegans myself I didn't find there was a huge amount on offer. I opted for a soup and a salad with some dressed rice (very tasty) and red sauce. It couldn't fault the taste, although having so much raw vegetables on top of the soup was a little extraordinary. I tried some of what looked like a large potato pancake; looked like it would be full of flavour but it was a little bland.

St Martins is a special place and has become our favourite lunch spot when we're in Chichester. It is 'quirky' ...old and very unpretentious furniture but comfortable and friendly. It's a very old building and the owners embrace its historical aspect. Wonderful...but it comes at a price. Drinks are competitively priced and I have no issue with quality but food is expensive given the portion size. Having said that it is all made from scratch on the premises and it's all organic so for that one has to pay a premium. So, I'm recommending St. Martins, just be aware it might be an expensive visit. But it will be worth it.

We had vegetable soup which was possibly the worst l'd ever had in a resataurant, watery with bits of vegetable in it to try to give it some authenticity . The best thing was the bread with it. The coffee might have been organic but its taste was very poor. And we were charged extra for the hot milk to go with it. When asked why the answer was some people prefer it black. That's one we haven't come across before. And all that we had was relatively expensive.

By chance found this coffee and amazing cake shop. Everything they sell is organic and so delicious. An interesting old house with huge atmosphere mainly I think due to the hard work of the owner to provide and maintain his values of good food , great service and a relaxing environment

What an amazing 'institution', cannot think of a better title. It's like visiting the best gentlemen's (or ladies') club, a favourite uncle's Georgian (?) property, or 'non smoking' drawing room.

Wanted something a little different for a coffee stop, and this really fit the bill. The drinks were lovely and well appreciated after a cold walk around the town. The food was all home made and looked delicious so we also had some cake! The place is all nooks and crannies but with a real fire going felt really cosy. We sat close to the counter, and were impressed at the girl serving who made every opportunity to up sell the products - good on you! Didn't need much up-selling as they were all so good. If you fancy something thats not Costa or Starbucks - then this is the place to visit!

When we lived in Putney some years ago and came down to see my daughter in Bosham we used this cafe. Both my daughter and wife were going through a vegetarian stage in their eating habits. The cafe I usually use was closed, because of a power-cut and I did not want a 2 course meal. It was also 2.00.p.m. so pub grub would be more unpredictable. Just at the back of Marks and Spencer I re-found this organic cafe.. A very small menu;- Soup, Welsh rarebit, mackerel salad and a stew [i think]. Lots of cakes, scones etc and a big choice of tea, coffee and organic wine. I had an endless pot of tea, delicious Welsh Rarebit with olives and an organic fruit ice cream/ sorbet. Everything is organic, there are old tables and a log fire. You order at the counter and service is efficient and quick. It was an unseasonably warm March day so I sat in the lovely little garden.. My meal was about £8 and tasty too.

I have never written a single review online before but felt compelled to here as am totally dismayed by St marts being ranked only the 4th best in Chichester (even falling below Charlie Harpers....)

This coffee house is just off East Street and easy to find. It is terribly quaint and the nooks and crannies make for a "olde English" atmosphere. The log fires added to the ambience. One would take foreign guests here to impress them. The price of the coffee was reasonable, but the food was very expensive.

The food and coffee here is delicious if expensive. The service is hit and miss and some of the seating is not very comfortable. However it is definitely organic and yummy, so still go there.

This is a great place to rest up for a pot of tea and a home made cake. Numerous small and secluded rooms, some with open fires make this a really welcoming and relaxing spot.

This place is always busy around lunchtime, hardly surprising given the value. Sadly, I have recently found that my clothes have smelt of smoke after I leave, which is unusual these days. I have also found the food to sometimes be undercooked, which can spoil things. Whilst I respect the concept, this place is a victim of it's own success, offering value that is head and shoulders above anywhere else of it's kind.
