Enjoyed a very good meal here tonight. Classic British food, particularly excellent pies. Tried steak and kidney, steak and Stilton, steak and Guinness and Bangers and cheddar mash. Food was great but spoilt slightly by being swamped in an, albeit good, gravy. It would have been nice to have the choice of the gravy in a jug on the side to pour it where and how much you wanted, hence the 4 rather than a five rating which it would have otherwise been. Starters were interesting and varied, soufflé a little stodgy but garlic mushrooms on toast in a Madeira sauce and French onion soup were great. Shared a generous cheeseboard of 4 good cheeses between two which was good value. Would have been nice if the cheeses had rested out of the fridge for a while before they were served as the soft cheeses were a bit hard. Overall though with 2 bottles of wine, a beer and a port, good value at £183 for 4. Service was excellent and attentive; we will definitely visit again.

Very surprised to see a large dog walk into the dining room. It would be safe to assume that the possibility that you might be sharing Mother's Day with a massive, stinking dog and therefore give the option NOT to be seated there, would be reasonable. But NO. Eating an expensive roast dinner with a dog slurping out of its bowl and wandering around was very unpleasant.

Went to the sixfields on Friday and once again we had a thoroughly lovely time. As always we were warmly welcomed by Anya and her team. Our food was tasty and hot and was delivered to our table with a smile by Marti who looked after us all night. Needless to say we will be returning very soon. Can't fault it. Give it a go if you haven't been. John Leonard

Yummy dinner for 7 in the Peak District I had the trio of lamb and it was quite lovely. Some of the others in our party had the Stilton steak pies and another lady had a sirloin steak, my husband had the lasagne Dessert was sticky toffee pudding but the highlight was Marshal the manager I’m assuming as he was a marvellous help with the menu and all things Royal Oak!! Two of the people in our party run large Farm Shop Attractions and both offered him a job on the spot so hang onto this guy he’s a gem Worth the visit for a comfy meal

We have eaten here before but have only ever sat outside for drinks/snacks. On this occasion we sat indoors for a full cooked meal at lunchtime. The internal decor was pleasant and the ambiance excellent. Despite being almost full there was a very quiet and refined atmosphere. The menu was varied, interesting and most mains were around £15. Everything we had was delicious and well cooked. The shepherds pie was exceptionally good - the best I’ve ever had. Our only criticism would be the rather too ’al dente’ veg. The service was exemplary and we will definitely return.

Mmmmnnn yummy breakfast food. The big full English is such great value with 4 sausages, 4 bacon, 2 egg, baked beans, hash brown bites, 2 slices of toast, 2 eggs and a grilled tomato plus black pudding! Pancakes were also amazing. Very god brunch!
