On arrival the pub was empty (1pm) Sunday lunch, no warm welcome. We ordered our Sunday lunch which came very quickly I suspect pre plated like warm food and jug of nuclear hot gravy. Small portion minimal veg and no mash as advertised. We asked for a side of stuffing but they had none, we got 2 carrots and 2 roast potatoes on the plate, then 10 min later we got a bowl of boiled cabbage and more boiled carrots. Very basic food we didn’t stay for pudding.

Came with an elderly family member to discuss something specific whilst having a carvery. Really bizarre behaviour from a blonde waitress with hair in a ponytail, she appeared to assume this gentleman was some kind of sugar daddy to me, she made a point of doing almost nothing except stand by our table eavesdropping, then kept smirking, nodding, winking, making eyes at this gentleman ….while giving me dirty looks. He was so embarrassed when we got outside he said What was all that about ? It actually bothered me more that she politely asked which drink he would like, then glared at me and said ‘And what do you want!’ In a begrudging way. News for you love, he’s my 70 year uncle , you’re probably disappointed that our conversation was boring to you, perhaps you’re in the wrong job. The Caribbean waitress however was absolutely lovely and never stopped working bless her.

My husband and I would just like to say a big thank you to everyone at the wheatsheaf for making our day so special. We got married on the 20th September and hired the room upstairs for a big table of 20 and had our wedding meal here. The pub has such a lovely welcoming feel and the staff and food are amazing. Everyone is so accommodating and service fantastic! We definitely will be returning. Highly recommended. Thank you again to you all. Mr & Mrs Marshall

Came here a lot in the 1970s . We have been since with the previous owners but not for many years. Pleasantly surprised on this occasion and enjoyed our visit. Good service by our server and the food was amazingly good. It was quick and hot and well presented . Spoke to the chef and congratulated him . We would recommend this restaurant.

Went for Dinner with friends and family. We were part of a large party. 3 courses - all done very well and served on time. Thought it was a good night out and the food tasty and well presented. Drinks a bit expensive, but would go back for food.

First time trying here today, had a lovely fresh autumn walk along the canal, then went for lunch and a drink. My husband had pie of the day, which was steak and Stilton, with mash and fresh vegetables. I had the prawn Marie Rose sandwich and chips, served with a little side salad and coleslaw. We devoured our food it was delicious. My husband said he could have ordered the pie again and eaten another one, not because the portion size, but because he loved it. Staff were lovely and friendly, highly recommend. I definitely want to return in the summer time too as there is a lovely beer garden.

We stayed here for one night and had dinner and breakfast. Part of a hiking trip - what a fantastic find! Really charming staff and excellent food. The smoked salmon and poached eggs I had for breakfast were fabulous and my veggie burger for dinner was great - good quality ingredients, well cooked! Lots of places say dogs welcome but this place really means it. Also great outdoor areas and lovely real ales!

The staff were pleasant and friendly, however we went for Sunday carvery the meat was ok but the vegetables were lukewarm and covered with silver foil when we arrived due to no one else being in to eat possibly? We arrived just before 13:00.

Always a real pleasure to be back in Winster and partake of the hospitality of Old Bowling Green. Charming, relaxing and traditional with welcoming staff and very dog friendly. We enjoyed tasty basket meals (served Friday/Saturday), drinks and chit-chat. A lovely pub in a lovely village.

Great selection of seasonal pies, including good gluten free options! Good drinks selection and a great quiz every Wednesday. Friendly team too and they welcome dogs 🐶 We usually bring any visitors staying with us here, and often pop in as a couple for a drink too.
