Stayed with great pleasure at this wee gem of a country pub, as a guest I had a great stay, excellent service, food, drink and accomodation. Thank you so much Colin (Chef 👌👌) Lisa Bar Manager and Susan who served a most gorgeous breaksfasts and meals.. going back definetly 2025!❣️

A late arrival at camp and easy option to eat out at nearby Sportsman. Wait to be seated and friendly service. All food coming out looked highly presentable and homemade. I opted for soup starter cauliflower and cheddar - thick and warming followed by fish of the day. Grilled sea bass on bed of potato mash served with seasonal veg., all cooked to perfection. No room for pudding but looking equally good on other tables. Definitely an obvious call in from camp but worth the short trip out of the centre of Hayfield. Evening food from 5.30pm.

The staff are so friendly and accommodating The food is excellently presented and delivered hot to the table even the veggies which is a pleasant surprise Cannot rate this place high enough

Had an evening meal here today. It's a very welcoming pub with the staff being very friendly and helpful. Me and my daughter dropped in about 5pm for a roast dinner. We both had vegetarian which was cheese and red onion pie. The meal was very well prepared and presented. I would recommend this pub to anyone and will visit again next time I'm in the area.

Visited after a walk with the family. Very friendly service from welcome, to explaining the menu, to taking our order, serving food and paying the bill. Food was delicious and generous portions - loved the homemade thick chips (burgers and fish & chips). Seating was comfortable and very clean. Will definitely come back to visit again!

This looked good as we started our hike, and it looked even better when we got back from 10 miles yomping up and down Kinder Scout. A large garden with plenty of space, a good range of local Thwaites beers and crisps were just what we needed! As with pretty much everywhere we've been in our tour of The Peak District, the service is also terrific.

A wonderful weekend stay at this fabulous pub. Landlord and staff all made us so welcome. His cheffing skills are consistently excellent, all meals delicious and good portions. Bedrooms are decent standard and have everything you need. Tucked away in a delightful part of the Peaks. Highly recommend.

We had a lovely family meal here with our dog - it’s definitely very dog friendly (not just dog tolerant) as there were lots of families with their dogs too! The food was delicious - cheesecake was so good we ordered one to take home! The staff were lovely, really welcoming and helpful and ensured we enjoyed our evening. The chef brought out leftovers for the dog - a tasty bowl of roast pork! Would highly recommend and will definitely be returning before we go home.

Really nice pub. We had dinner here after a long walk earlier and the food was great, staff exemplary and the beer and wine were also excellent. Good atmosphere as well. If you're visiting Hayfield it is highly recommended.

We were staying in Hayfield at an Airbnb cottage and wandered up the road to find this pub. The name made us wonder if it was going to be a bit of a boozer but when we went inside we were pleasantly surprised. On arrival, we were shown to our table and given details on the specials and our drinks order taken. The menu was typical of a pub which had some old favourites and a couple of fish dishes on offer. We both chose a goats cheese starter. For the mains my partner went for the chicken in a beautifully creamy sauce and I had traditional fish and chips with mushy peas. All absolutely delicious! For pudding we asked one of the very helpful, smily waitresses her opinion on the best dessert and she suggested the Malteasers cheesecake. My partner had that and I had the blueberry cheesecake - perfect! The staff are very friendly and smiley, they make time to have a chat with you and the food and service was excellent. We would highly recommend visiting this pub and if ever visiting Hayfield again we will be back!

Went here today and couldn't fault it at all. Staff were so so friendly and welcoming. Food was out of this world. We had cheese and onion pie, nachos, steak and ale pie and steak sandwich. Big portions, absolutely gorgous then cherry on the cake was raspberry and vanilla HOMEMADE cheesecake. Omg never tasted anything so good. Fantastic pub

Great food, friendly staff and a good selection of beers. We popped in a few times during our weekend stay, tried a good selection from the menu and everyone was really happy with their meals. We’ll definitely be returning when next in the area

The staff were really good with our dog and I can honestly say this is one of the most welcoming pubs we've been in. We will definitely return!

We like this place. It has good beer and it’s unpretentious. The menu isn’t massive, which is good as far as I’m concerned, but there was plenty of vegetarian and non-vegetarian choice. There are standard bar classics like burgers and curry, as well as some more healthy stuff (we had baked seabass with seasonal vegetables, which was delicately flavoured with ginger and chilli). They were very accommodating when we put in a special request for accompaniments to apple crumble for dessert.

We visit here whenever we go to hayfield for a walk. We sometimes visit even when we are not going for a walk as the food, atmosphere beer and staff are excellent. Today I had the roast lamb dinner. Superb as always.

Really friendly and helpful in accommodating gluten free diet, including being able to prepare food not listed on the menu. The front of house staff understand the importance of cross contamination, use of the fryer etc. Would definitely recommend for any other coeliacs.

We stayed on the local Caravan and Camping site for the weekend, and booked in for Sunday lunch in advance at the sportsman.It was a 4 minute walk up the hill from where were staying , so that was a bonus.As soon as we arrived we were greeted with friendly smiles, the service was excellent, ordering drinks straight away, then food within 5 minutes of being seated .We then didnt have to wait long for it to arrive, and it was delicious.The lamb Sunday roast, was so tasty, with a selection of vegetables, mash, roast potatoes, a giant yorkshire pudding, and melt in the mouth lamb.Totally recommend The Sportsman, and if we are ever in the area again we wouldn't hesitate to return.The one and only downside was the barking dogs in close proximity to where we were sat.

Our second visit here on our little break away from home. Perfect hosts, very accommodating with special requests, such as providing a quiet area for our anxious dog. This lovely pub offers a menu to suit all tastes, from which the food we chose today was again excellent. We ate inside due to the unseasonal weather we are experiencing, but there are plenty of tables outside for when footfall increases. I would suggest booking a table at weekends/special occasions due to the location & to avoid disappointment. I can't fault this place at all, & look forward to returning in the future. Just wish it was my local....

Tried the lockdown take away for the first time tonight. It has really made our night. Tasty, fresh and hearty. We had a lamb burger with chips and salad & salmon en croute with veg. The veg was v nicely cooked-still brightly coloured! Salad had nice mixed leaves and tomatoes that tasted of tomatoes. Burger great too. We will be back for more & then try the real thing when we are allowed again.

Had really lovely Sunday roast, followed by the very best Key lime Pie. All with very good and friendly service (and covid friendly). Definitely will be returning in the future and recommend it if you happen to be in the area.

Booked a table to take my Mum out for lunch. Very helpful, friendly staff who took the booking, welcomed and served us. Called in for coffee mid afternoon after a walk up Kinder Scout to Edale Rocks. Staff super friendly and helpful. Covid arrangements were very good and being adhered to - full marks guys. Outside seating area along with well spaced inside tables. We were staying at the campsite just below the pub and had previously booked an evening meal for two the same day - food was lovely with the steak and ale pie being highly recommended.

Came here after a walk from birch vale via the set valley trail. Long walk up but it was worth it I had chilli. The only problem is it took a long time for the food to come and for them to come to us to order

Popped in for lunch- family ordered the fish and chips, nachos and children's fish and chicken goujons. Great food and service excellent. Good social distance measures in place and felt very safe. Member of staff dealt with another family very well when their child tried to wander around towards other tables.

Food was delicious. Good selection of dishes. Excellent social distancing measures in place which made us feel very safe. Recommend the curry which they will adjust to your level of spice, the burgers and the local lamb. And the creme brûlée was amazing. Friendly staff. Dogs allowed on some areas. Visited here today. I have been a few times for an after walk drink but never eaten before. The staff are all brilliant, efficient and very welcoming. I can't speak highly enough of them. I had the lamb roast. Well presented and was a really enjoyable meal. The lamb was excellent. One of our group had cheese and onion pie and chips. I tasted one of the chips..... Best chips I think I've had. The pub is really cosy and warm as well. Will certainly be returning.

The atmosphere in the Sportsman is always vibrant and cosy. Christmas decorations were superb. Service from Jane and Lisa at front of house was exceptional (as always).Only came in for a quick meal so we had the steak and onion sandwich. What a great choice!!!. Very well presented and was absolutely delicious. Had the golden ale which was beautiful. Definitely recommended.Parking is on the road outside but very safe. Great beer garden in summer.

We visited twice in three days and had great meals on both occasions. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. The menu has plenty of options for both meat eaters and vegetarians and daily specials as well. Everything we had was clearly well and freshly cooked. Two very enjoyable evenings.

We were staying at a hotel in Hayfield to attend a nearby concert. We ate here on a weekday evening and WOW The Sportsman did not disappoint! The pub is clean and immaculately decorated in accordance to the style of the building. Staff were really accommodating and the food was really to die for! Me and my partner wished we booked in here for accommodation instead of the filthy sham of a 'hotel' we stayed in down the road! Keep up the good work The Sportsman. Would 100% recommend if you are visiting Hayfield or surrounding areas.

We've visited the Sportsman Inn more than a few times over the years - both for a drink after hiking in the Hayfield area and for dinner when we have friends or family visiting. Our most recent visit was dinner on Saturday, 31st August 2019.As always, the welcome was a warm one and we were shown straight to our table. The dining area is spacious and there's no attempt to cram as many people in as possible so you feel like you have plenty of room around you and you aren't sat on top of other diners.If you like cheese-and-onion pie, the Sportsman do one of the best ones I've had, really flavourful and with delicious, soft crumbly pastry. Highly recommended. My partner and my dad both went for the Barnsley Chop, which (I'm told) was also top quality and perfectly cooked.If you're in Hayfield or close enough to visit for a meal, we definitely recommend this traditional pub for food or just for drinks.

The pub caters well for visitors providing food drink and accommodation . The accommodation is clean and comfortable and quiet. The food is very good. Service throughout friendly and efficient.

I was staying in the campsite just down the road (2 mins) and the first night was a pouring with rain so came up to this pub for a bite to eat.

The Sportsman is located in the picturesque village of Hayfield. The food is excellent quality. The chef is clearly talented and makes some very tasty meals. The one small gripe was the service. The restaurant was not busy but I found the waiting staff to be a touch inattentive. However, the great food more than made up for this.

All what you would expect from a country pub. Warm friendly atmosphere, excellent home cooked food and roaring fires in the winter. Great friendly staff and locals, well worth a visit

Absolutely gob smacked, we were staying at the nearby campsite, decided not to have too much to eat and support the local economy by going to the pub for a meal. We arrived at 8:15 pm as it states on the web site "food served until 9pm" only to be told that they would not serve us food as they were getting low on food. Then had the audacity to ask what we would like to drink. We won't be back
