I remember many years ago I came here, then during the night on my way back from a hike in the rain soaked I sat waiting to be picked up very late at night by a friend. I sat at a bench under a tree to take cover from the rain, and they came out shouting at me, with a bat telling me to leave. I told them I was simply resting and waiting to be picked up, with a huge backpack. They instead released two giant dogs on me in which I had to flee for my safety. If you're gonna have a hiking pub, try not threatening people who are calm.

Really lovely people, I was covered in mud after a long hike and asked if they'd prefer I sit outside, yet the staff insisted that it's a Hikers pub and completely up to me, they even offered me a spot by the radiator to help dry out my clothes! Great selection of beers on tap, I'd personally recommend the Celtic Gold, food is fantastic as well! Will be back.

Visited on Saturday for a late lunchtime drink. Pub was busy but only one person serving so getting a drink yet alone food was impossible. We walked out and went across to the campsite that sells food and beer. There we received excellent service and no queue. Sadly the Old Nag’s seem to rely on the fact that after a long walk you’re happy to wait ages to be served!! We won’t visit again. A shame as over the last 35 years we have always used this pub when walking in the area.

This management and staff of this pub have no interest in customer service and unfortunately don't need to due to the lack of competition - only 1 other pub in a 4 mile radius and that is owned by the same company. I would strongly advise that you eat and drink at your accommodation or campsite rather than this shocker of an excuse for a pub. Sitting in an uncomfortable camping chair in the cold and dew eating luke warm pasta bolognaise from a plastic bowl and drinking tepid beer from a can would be a better experience than will be provided by this pub. We arrived at 8 for drinks and dinner and were told that they stop serving food at 8. At 8pm ?! But they said they would be serving pizza till 9pm. We sat down. At 8:30 we were asked to move to a different part of the pub as they were closing this part, we asked if there were available tables elsewhere and the reply was "not sure". We did find another table after waiting for others to leave. Then at 9pm we were asked to move again because now that part of the pub was being closed. We moved to the last remaining available table. Then as each table became available and was cleaned staff stacked the chairs on the table - this was from 9pm - not at closing time at 11 but at 9, it was made very clear that we were greatly inconveniencing the staff just by being there. To top it all the pub has a long bar, the bar staff were all gathered at one end talking to each other and expected customers to walk up to them to order rather than them walking to the customers. Probably the worst customer service I've experienced in a pub.

We stopped by for a drink and a meal. Our friends joined us later. This is an interesting village pub, with a lot of history. The place is usually visited by walkers, and everyone is made to feel welcome. I would warn potential visitors that there is extremely limited parking here. In high season, I suggest parking in the village car park about a quarter of a mile away.

The location is perfect with plenty of walks on the doorstep. The cottage is actually part of the pub, it is adequate but tired i.e. the shower doors don’t meet together anymore, the sofa is passed its best and very uncomfortable but in fairness has everything else you need. The only thing is, as the bedroom wall is attached to the pub, if you want to sleep early you better take ear plugs or go and join the quiz. The quiz was just a loud muffle through the walls until about 11pm. The beer garden is just outside your windows but thats ok. Just people chatting and enjoying themselves. The food at the pub is lovely, it’s always been service with a smile and a good atmosphere. We were very disappointed on the last night here as they had segregated a large portion of the pub tables (which no one was sitting at) for charity so you were only allowed to sit at one if you were having a pork roll. There were no other tables free and we didn’t like pork and wanted a proper meal. We thought we’d go out and drive elsewhere but we couldn’t as there were 4 cars blocking our car in the tiny rear car park. We decided it was too much grief trying to get the cars moved so we had to walk half a mile to the next pub (also owned by the same chain) and eat there. Shame really. Although we wouldn’t stay here again you can’t deny the location is superb.

Lovely pub to visit after a long walk. Given the location, you'd expect it to be on the pricier side of things. That being said, £2 for a bag of scampi fries is absolutely extortionate. £1.20/£1.50 would be pricey, but reasonable, £2 is ludicrous. It was a busy Saturday and the staff were welcoming, but seemed misdirected, gathering at the end of the bar while many tables were left uncleared and in need of a wipe down.

Fries were kind of clucked together, edible but that’s about it. And some coleslaw from the supermarket. Basically, they don’t cook, they just warm stuff up. Service: was not warm and friendly like you’d expect in a small town, the barman with the pony tail just looked impatient and grumpy. Can’t speak for the other staff members.

The replacement chips came out within 20 seconds and we're still solid in the middle. Will not be eating here again. The last two times I've been the food has been sub par with clear indications of frozen or microwaved veg and food. Chips clearly cooked quickly in a lot of oil. After a long day exploring Kinder and the surrounding area the end of the walk, and the start of the Pennine way is marked by this pub. Like a mirage in the desert, a nice friendly welcome, dogs and muddy boots more than tolerated, and a nice pint to go with a dinner which I struggle to review as it barely touched the sides, but whilst it didn’t last long; it was tasty! Can get busy with it not being the largest place and on a popular route, but its busyness is reflective of its popularity for being a hikers pub. Definitely worth a visit when you climb down from the tops!

Popped in after a quick walk up Mam Tor to see the sun set. The good thing about going at this time is that you can park near the top 🤔🥳 As in car thought would try the pub and chance parking. Luck was in as had the last school and resident parking spot!!! Pub was clearly geared up for walkers and people staying locally which is great but my advice would be not to try and take the car as there is hardly any spaces and you can’t park on the road either as all double yellow. Friendly staff, nice beer but visit only if you are walking as otherwise it would be stressful unless you are happy to park at the railway station or try the other pub

A lovely place to go for a drink &/or food after a walk. We visited in Jan. 2024 and could walk straight in and find a table, but in summer months it gets very busy so you may need to reserve in advance if you want to be sure of getting a table. A really nice selection of guest beers we're on offer when we visited, which were enjoyed in front of a lovely real fire. The staff are lovely and friendly. The pub does not operate a tab system, which means you order drinks and food at the bar and pay for it when ordering. Dogs are very welcome. There are a few vegan options available; I went for sausage and garlic mash with a tomato sauce - very much a gorgeous plateful after a tiring walk battling the wind. The only reason it did not get a 5 is that the wrong baguette was brought out for my partner, and whilst it was remedied quickly and without fuss, it wasn't as well prepared. However, overall, this is a great place to go whether after a walk or not.

Great location in the peak district, central and ideal for the walks. Unfortunately, this was booked as part of a Christmas present and felt misled as this is not a cottage, it is a flat about the pub. The flat was well equipped, very dated, and thin uncomfortable thin mattress. It has a good bunk bed for our son. We were able to use a spare bunk bed mattress and sofa cushions to layer on top of the old mattress to make the second night a much more comfortable sleep. Thank you to the bar man who was very welcoming and very friendly, an asset to the pub owners. Plus, a thank you for letting us leave our personal belongings at the property. I hope this feedback helps for improving future stays. I recommend renaming the property as it is mis leading and leads to disappointment on arrival. Not want the start you want to a stay.

This is a lovely little pub up in the peaks and is on plenty of different walking routes in the area. It was lovely in the inside, we were a little disappointed that there was only one fire lit and none lit in the other room of the pub, especially after a long very cold walk. It was very busy when we went in at about half 3. Not surprising really considering where it is located. It is dog friendly too which is great. We found a table as a family were leaving, the menu was limited as the pub was closing for a couple of weeks. However they had what we wanted to order. We queued at the bar to place our order, which didn't take very long. We ordered our sons burger which she gladly adapted for him, however when I asked if they could please do me chips instead of garlic bread with my lasagne (can't eat garlic bread as it gives me really bad indigestion) I was told that they wouldn't change things as they were so busy (despite already changing my sons burger). I ordered a vege burger instead. Our food came swiftly, this is were it falls down a bit unfortunately. My husbands pie was more pasty than meat, tasty but not much in it, the veg and potatos that come with it were lovely. My veggie burger was cold in the middle. Our daughter didn't like the sausages on her kids meal which is probably more about her personal taste. However our son declared that his burger was delicious. The moment my husband put his fork down there was someone there to collect his plate, even though we were all still eating and he was still chewing lol. All in all, they were very busy so I understand that there was possibly going to be issues. Just a bit disappointed that I didn't get the item I wanted just because I would have needed to have chips instead, which wasn't a big ask really, saved them making garlic bread. Shame the burger was cold and my husbands pie was lacking in filling. Would have given more stars had the issues with the food not happened. I would consider visiting again but perhaps not when they are so busy.

Frustrating, I would love to give this 5 stars, a few years ago pre covid this was 6 stars , a genuinely outstanding pub , one of the best in the peaks , this pub has a lot of sentimental meaning for myself and my wife as Edale is where I proposed and we ended up in the old nags head to celebrate , on that occasion and the couple of times after it was brilliant , food was incredible and staff and atmosphere was superb , most recent visit however was just okay , still worthy of 4 stars but our favourite meal the Old Nags Head Special was very watery , maybe a change of chef since pre covid , atmosphere is still lovely and the staff are lovely and still worth a visit , just not as good as before which is a shame. Dortmunder on tap was one of the best beers I’ve ever had

In Castleton for a few days walking and called in at this pub for an early evening meal and a couple of beers. Although not busy when I arrived most tables were reserved but staff managed to find me one . All staff very friendly and helpful, as a solo traveller much appreciated . Had a very tasty burger with added stilton cheese , and a couple of pints of an excellent Black Sheep bitter . Well recommended , but very popular so best to reserve a table . Will be back next time in Castleton .

Great old, historical hotel, in the perfect location. Our room had views over the park gardens too. Staff are friendly & hard working. Great breakfast in the mornings. Perfect for the opera house if you're visiting for a show or just exploring the peaks. Some parking available- £6 for 24 hrs, obtain ticket from hotel. We'll definitely be back, many thanks !

set on a quiet and scenic road not far from the centre of hope, you'll be met by friendly staff and i have to admit my black pudding in chicken, new potatoes, cabbage and sauce melted, throw in a decent choice of starters and desserts not to mention a good choice of alcoholic beverages and your in for a nice dining experience.
