Beautiful Buxton, the epicentre of the peak district and a great location to base yourself for exploring the beautiful surroundings. Have stayed in the old hall many times over the years and unfortunately it’s gone from a beautiful quirky hotels to an unloved mess. We attended for two nights, easy to find if you have never been before and parking available outside (permits available from reception reasonably priced). I will get the negativities out the way first, Condition of the hotel is very tired, lots of signs of significant fatigue and wear across the hotel, various areas are out of action or are undergoing maintenance. The temperature was off the scale, I have stayed in Mexico without air conditioning, the heat in the old hall was nothing other than like a furnace, even with windows open and all radiators turned off it was still unbearable. Bar staff, Natalie needs retraining urgently, free pouring spirits is not on especially when you consider the amount that is charged! Measures available but in her words “I’ve been doing this five years I know what I am doing” you don’t young lady, the licensing act is here to protect customers and publicans not just to cause a little more work for you. The state of the glasses the drinks were served in is also not ideal and no care to clients safety is being considered. Random staff children on the first floor waiting for their parents to finish their work was a new one, understand everyone has child care needs but is this safe in this day and age to leave them unaccompanied in a hotel… The positives! Two 80th celebrations and a wedding taking place, all three ran seamlessly together and no problems with guests in the wrong area or long delays waiting. Breakfast both days was plentiful and readily refreshed. Location is perfect, some great local bars and restaurants close by, these all have great choices should you wish to explore a little further than the hotel. If it’s cold then the old hall will be the place to go, the heating works well! Mary didn’t visit us in the night but the history of the hotel is an amazing piece to read up on. Michael who was working Friday Evening is an absolute ambassador for the hotel and group, this man deserves a recommendation for an employee recognition scheme if they operate one, talked at length with me on the history and experiences of the hotel, shared his experiences of a recent stay in London at a sister hotel in the chain and was enthusiastic about the future for the Old Hall. Overall, it’s a bed and a location to stay, it worked for us but is urgently in need of a refreshment and some love, the location is perfect.

On arrival to this hotel there was nobody on reception, eventually we did find someone who was to be fair very polite, but there was a strange smell, old, damp, and first impression was one of the hotel was very tired. Room was okay not the cleanest, but it was cold even though radiator was on all the time as well as a plug in electric radiator . At dinner didn’t understand why there weren’t many people in the dining room and yet the wait for the different courses was long and they did seem under staffed with only 1 waitress and the restaurant manager. At breakfast I will say the the food on offer was good quality but such disappointment as the hot choices were verging on cold which must be considered a health risk, also restaurant was cold, and both at dinner and breakfast room is full of cooking smells and heavy vapour. I will say that all the staff I spoke to were very friendly and polite, but no I would not stay again .

Great old, historical hotel, in the perfect location. Our room had views over the park gardens too. Staff are friendly & hard working. Great breakfast in the mornings. Perfect for the opera house if you're visiting for a show or just exploring the peaks. Some parking available- £6 for 24 hrs, obtain ticket from hotel. We'll definitely be back, many thanks !

Historic and beautiful. The Old Hall is very much Old Money compared to its flashier sister hotel, The Crescent. Room was fab. The only downside is the 1930s lift. If you are disabled it can be a problem as people forget to close it properly and then it doesn't work. Then you have to either run to the top floor and engage the door properly or get someone from reception. They definitely need more staff, and the hotel needs some TLC. However, its position and food make it a fabulous choice.

Historic building near the park & opera house. An aged building like this has charm & character, a bit tired in places, but I liked it. Don't expect anonymous corporate sparkle & shine. Staff working extremely hard & all friendly & willing to help. Downstairs had a bit of a doggy smell but the first floor where we stayed was fine. Apparently, dogs are allowed with a surcharge so maybe worth requesting a non-dog room. Top buffet breakfast with hot & cold choices in a fresh & airy room. Cloth table cloths & serviettes a nice touch. Our room had high ceilings filled with proper old fashioned furniture. 2 comfy chairs & a coffee table to look out over the park which was coppery orange with the Autumn leaves. The windows opened-hooray! Parking permits available at reception for £6 per 24 hours to be used in the locale of the hotel. 5-10 min walk (depending on the individual) up a steep hill to the market square. I would definitely stay again.

AVOID EATING HERE. Ate here last night with the family. The whole experience was awful. Slow and painful service despite there being about 7 people eating in the place. Food was very poor. Had to remind the waiter to even bring our bread. Took an age for the food to arrive. When it did arrive the beef was overcooked and tasted burnt. The burger at 16 pounds was robbery. The most basic burger with limp pale tasteless tomatoes, no salad and fries that were clearly overcooked and brittle. How can you get fries wrong? The cake for dessert was old and very dry, my 9 year old child can cook a better sponge. Spend your hard earned money elsewhere

I would rate our evening dining experience as outstanding…. The staff at every level clearly put the customer first and they were efficient, polite, friendly and helpful. All of them had smiles and nothing appeared to be to much trouble for them We had booked ahead and only booked a fish and chip meal deal at £20 a couple but, what a deal ! Another couple dining close by said they would be choosing that option the following evening. The portion size was generous, the fish was fresh and beautifully cooked. The meal came with mushy peas and tartare sauce. We will definitely be returning . Yes the restaurant was quiet …there were only 4 tables taken when we arrived although the bar area tables were busier but we fully intend to recommend The Old Hall Hotel to our friends . Excellent value, excellent staff , excellent well cooked food.

A first and last visit to, I think, the strangest, and one of the poorest dining experiences we’ve ever had. We asked at the bar if we could book a table for four for a pre-theatre meal, explaining that two of our friends may not arrive in time to eat as they were travelling a long way. We were told that this wouldn’t be a problem, but that they would set up a table in the restaurant rather than the bar (which had 3 people in it at the time, no reserved signs and lots of empty tables). Why? We arrived at the restaurant, which had all tables pre-set for breakfast and just one couple already in there. As there were absolutely no staff in sight, we chose a table as they were all set in exactly the same way. Still there were no staff, so we helped ourselves to menus. A member of staff finally came and apologised that they were very busy - with a near empty restaurant and bar! They took our very straightforward, one-course orders. Whilst we waited, there was clearly a problem with the order of the other couple. In the near-empty large restaurant you heard every word, and the couple received only one main course of their order! The waiter apologised and explained that they were “very busy”, but there was no offer to sort it. We really started to feel that the whole thing was surreal. Eventually, the same waiter came through and asked about our food, and we explained that we hadn’t had any food yet. He mumbled that he had seen our food and disappeared, apologising that they were, yes, “very busy”. We were now wondering how long ago he had seen it. When it did arrive, it was just about edible, but the ‘crushed peas’ with my meal were boiled frozen peas, and my husband’s chips looked and tasted like they had been kept warm for hours. Poor pub food which should have been returned, very expensive for what it was, and this in a ‘restaurant’. We should have complained, but I think we were stunned by the whole experience, and by now concerned about the time. We found a member of staff who told us we couldn’t pay the bill in the restaurant but had to pay in the bar - a completely different part of the hotel. Foolishly, we just paid and left. My husband said that when he went to pay there were a maximum of 9 or 10 people in the bar, and nobody else in the restaurant of this “very busy” place. If we hadn’t had to pay, it would have been worth the visit just for the utter ridiculousness of it. There were people looking at the menu outside and glancing in. Fortunately for them they moved on. Next time, we won’t even glance!

We went for a late Sunday lunch, so have no views on the accommodation, though it is noteworthy that Mary Queen of Scots has not been back. The dining room has just been renovated but you wouldn’t know. We had many problems with the meal service, see comments on Food, but there appeared to be no one in charge…no manager to be seen on the premises, so no one with whom to discuss our dissatisfaction. The waiting staff were young and (though forgetful) did their best. The elephant in the room was the big problem, the elephant being the lack of supervision/management/overview. The wine glasses had finger marks and the handle on the water jug was sticky! It was awful, and all down to … BAD MANAGEMENT. Where were you?

Booked the advertised "pre-theatre" menu, explicitly using those words and repeating them on arrival at 6pm. Took until 6.10pm to order food, repeating that time was of the essence. Paid up front to be able to leave quickly. First course arrived after 6,35pm, meanwhile other tables were also expressing concern about times. Staff were in evidence, but a nearby table which had not been cleared away when we arrived remained uncleared. At 6.50 we decided to abandon the meal and give up on the second, already paid-for, course and leave for the theatre. Complained to reception (explicitly saying it was a complaint) but no response a week later even though they have my phone number from the booking. I expected an acknowledgement of my complaint with apology at the very least, and a part refund would be in order too. Something was plainly badly wrong on that evening, and it seemed that nobody is in charge or taking responsibility for fixing things or communicating effectively with customers. Summary: if you're going to the theatre, don't rely on this "pre-theatre" option.

I had a great afternoon tea here. I visited as a history teacher I wanted to come to the place Mary Queen of Scots had stayed. They have a booklet you can read on the window etches she (and others) did when here, fascinating. The food was great and they accommodated my requirements as a vegetarian and allergy to citrus fruits! Plenty of tea (I picked the house blend) with a hot water pot to refill too. Only downside was once served no one checked on me the hour or so I was there. I popped into the bar to pay before I left. I enjoyed the peace and quiet (I was the only one there) but could have done with a milk top up part way in. But it was minor overall food and setting was great.

Stayed at the hotel for a week. Nostalgic hotel with an interesting history. Friendly staff. Clean rooms. Dog friendly. It was wonderful to sleep in the beds. English breakfast, but unfortunately no meat and cheese as a spread. The only downside was the lack of hotel parking, but there was plenty of room on the street. The parking spaces were only busy on evenings when there were activities in the theater.

We remember this restaurant under its previous owners, and thought that under new management it might sparkle - sadly it is rather sad, and looks worse ! - the tables are wooden, with marks and bits of veneer missing - no table cloths, which would have been nice. The ceiling has paper peeling off near the RSJ, and the roof fan could do with a good clean. It just had a neglected air to the whole Hotel - carpets seemed old and faded. Now as for the lunch - the Sunday lunch was advertised outside, but the choice of meats NOT - it turned out that they were Chicken or Gammon ! - we thought the 'cheap' option for them !! A Roast beef might have been nice ! We were greeted warmly by the restaurant manager, and offered a bottle of free Buxton water whilst we ordered - a nice touch. Service was fine, but the meal was lacking in imagination - the gammon was not one slice but 3 small slices, They were not inspiring to look at, rather clinical - it tasted fairly average. The chicken was a boned roasted chicken breast - actually very nice. The veg was carrots, swede and roasted potatoes, but not a lot of it - the yorkshire pudding was good but not totally crispy. Overall for £18 pp we thought that much better value might be had in many pub chains or carveries for sunday lunch. This hotel from what we saw really does need a proper makeover by its present owners, and the restaurant very much so - it is dingy and somewhat depressing.

I slept in my bed Monday to Wednesday. Wednesday night I slunk further down into the hospital corners and to my surprise my feet touched something cold and hard !!! Leapt out of bed and looked inside and there it was a Boohoo label that someone had left behind. I was sleeping in a bed that was slept in before. Horrified! Thurday am went to Reception to tell them and the woman would not come to reception desk window. I wanted to quietly tell her the problem and that under the unit there were tissues and a previous occupant's room card was under the unit. Receptionist would not come to window and refused to believe me and said would have a word with "housekeeping" but nothing was done. The service was awful. They used inexperienced staff who kept referring to "someone who could help". In general awful service. Such a shame as the building itself would appeal to a lot of people.

Gorgeous setting, well worth a visit but clear flaws with the dining experience. The building is worth a visit because of its history, like much of Buxton - everyone should visit for that reason alone. The staff were friendly and attentive, but seemed a little put out when I returned a beer that I thought was sour. Its replacement was just as sour despite being from a different pump. Additionally, the dining experience is not good value for money. Let me explain. Firstly, the draught lager is sour, meaning someone isn't cleaning the lines regularly, if at all. It was the same with Amstel and Moretti. It appears that Ensana management have the staff switching shifts between The Crescent and Old Hall Hotel, so that gives the impression that no-one fully understands where the bar and its beer are up to. Avoid the draught products. Secondly, we asked for a wine menu, and were given a copy each, both with different prices. The staff checked prices on the till and they were also different. Again, the impression of no overview. Thirdly, while the starters were good, I ordered the lamb (£26), which was both small and fatty. The potatoes had clearly been cooked the day before and reheated in the microwave before being soaked in a load of chippy gravy. The veg was fresh but this is scant recompense. Ensana are trying to work within their budget but standards are not as high as the prices. It was food that a Wetherspoons would serve for 50% of the price. Serving staff are eager to please but they are working with substandard food training and poor food prep technique. And someone needs to manage the draught beer offer properly. Disappointing.

Shower only works when held at a certain angle, rooms get too hot during the night (radiators couldn’t be turned off), there are uneven floors everywhere meaning bed is going slightly down the hill and in the morning we got woken up by a child running in the upstairs room (it’s a very old hotel so you can hear everything). We visited here as part of my 70th birthday celebrations. So disappointed, our experience in this venue put a real dampener on my special day. The bar area was deserted when we entered, we had to ring a bell to get served. I checked they were serving food and we chose from a very small, restricted menu. We had to have Peroni bottled beer, I like cider but the draught pump wasn’t working. My sausage and mash was awful with sloppy mash and some unidentified sweet, green vegetable on top. My husband had haddock and chips, the haddock was ok but he left most of the chips. Whilst we were eating another couple came in and had to ring the bell several times before they gained the attention of the staff. One member of staff walked through the bar area completely ignoring the waiting couple. This bar needs to up its game if it is to survive. Maybe bring in a pub quiz once a week? Otherwise customers just won’t visit, the food is poor, disinterested staff, scruffy tables and tired decoration. Such a shame as it looks interesting from the outside and I know the building has a long history.

And the chips were tasteless, fish was over cooked. The posh salt grinders didn’t work. No real ale was on tap and instead a good lager was requested .only to be served an indifferent one without being asked as the lager was off too! The place lacked atmosphere and the service could have been better. For an old historic hotel ,they need to improve.

Just as well as the restaurant is understaffed and staff inexperienced so service therefore suffers badly. We saw many prospective restaurant customers were being turned away because they had not booked a table. Yet the restaurant was not busy! Restaurant was really nicely decorated and clean. A good ambience. A la Carte menu was good, including GF options ( though had to ask for GF guidance (ie no GF menu). Food fairly expensive but served piping hot on hot, niceplates and of good quality. This place has real potential but clearly needs management backing.

Booked for a Saturday evening meal and expected it to be quite busy but not at all. The bar was also very quiet. We then went through to the restaurant and we were the only two diners, despite the hotel being fully booked. Waited on by a very pleasant young lady who made sure we were well looked after through the evening. Both meals were excellent and the quality of the ingredients were, also, excellent. On arrival to Buxton we had noticed that traffic, etc. were much the same as previous visits and wondered why the bar and restaurant were so quiet because prior to ''lockdown'' we had, several times, been to the Opera and to this hotel for pre theatre meals and it had been so busy. It appears that they no longer provide this, although it is provided by other restaurants, etc. We have planned a performance at the Opera later in the year but have now had to revise our dining options, so I'm afraid Old Hall's loss. However, as mentioned above, the food is excellent and the place very nice so we will be here again sometime but it seems to me that management are missing out on an obvious market.

Our daughter was married here, and we have had several lovely Sunday lunches here, however last Sunday was awful,no choice Pork or Pork, which was awful, had to ask for starters, which came with side of limp yellow rocket, two very small pieces of bread, very over priced for what we had, extremely disappointed, such a lovely place, really gone down. Can't recommend it at all, which is a shame we have had some really good times there,we won't be going back again 😔😔

Haven't been since Covid, this used to be one of our go to places to eat when in Buxton, but probably won't bother again. Ate in the wine bar, the menu was quite uninspiring and quite limited in its variety. No specials advertised, and no substitute on offer due to the lack of lamb of featured on the menu. One couple left because of it and we nearly did too. The starters lacked seasoning but I must admit the gnocchi was very tasty. It's a shame as I think this wine bar is trying to be something it's not and sadly the prices are quite expensive too.

I came here a few years ago ,the difference between then and now is quite noticeable, it looks tired, and run down, still clean and warm.but frayed at the edges. The double bed was 2 singles pushed together, with an ill fitting duvet, which I had to remake .the Wine bar area also doubles as breakfast room, looks like a cafe area, wooden tables and chairs,at breakfast no tablecloths ,and only partly set for breakfast .no condiments on the table ,or breakfast menu,...I did find a menu on the way out on a shelf.....self service menu ,only warm food ..served on cold plates.....Please..!.....plates should be WARMED.....overall I think its overpriced.and I think lost its way....I think its trying to be something it no longer is.....sorry won't be coming back.....

Beautiful hotel with great service. Prices are decent and considering the area and building seemed very fair. Buxton is a town worth visiting with a lot of things to do and see and this hotel is a worthy option for your stay. Recommended.

Had a meal in the wine bar. Overall a pleasant experience. Distinct lack of vegan/vegetarian options. Portion size of starter was disappointing for the price and selection of beers was lacking. Food was tasty with a quiet atmosphere in the wine bar.

Built! 1573,Mary Queen of Scots was under house arrest for 2 years later that decade. She scratched a message on one of the windows during her incarceration. Good parking at the front of the Hotel, opposite the Park. Walking distance to the Theatre Royal, The Crescent or the Market Street. Great food served at Lunch time in the dining room, also a bar serving snacks.

Hotel staff and hotel was both lovely. They was very welcoming and great with my dog! I did speak to Jessica before I booked my trip to ask a few questions and she was very lovely, friendly and couldn't help me enough! The lady that came in to clean my room was lovely and didn't mind that my dog wanted to say hello. I would recommend anyone to stay here and I would definitely stay here again!

The service here was excellent and the food very good indeed. The actual hotel is old - the oldest in England! - reflected in the tired decor. The “wine bar” is just a bar like so many others in hotels.

Food as ever was fantastic and the service impeccable. I had a ceasar salad to start followed by pork sausages, creamed potatoes, crushed peas, sweet onion chutney and plenty of gravy. My husband had crab mayonnaise with fennel and pear, followed by steak and black pudding pie with creamed potato, broccoli and gravy. Washed down with a nice bottle of malbec.

We was staying in the hotel on a deal including dinner. Due to current situation we ate in the wine bar. Food was very good, I have a very tasty burger and my wife had aged rump steak with a peppercorn sauce. Both served with the most delicious hand cut chips. Service was very good.

We stayed at the Old Hall in march and arrived just before lunch and before the room was ready, so decided to go into the bar (not main restaurant) and have lunch. We had a salad each, my wife had - chicken, bacon and avocado £11. I had smoked salmon and caper £12. Both were well worth the money, salad was lovely and fresh and crisp and the portions of meat and fish that accompany the salad were brilliant. Highly recommend the food. Service was great, staff friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Good job

A hotel with real character and as a result was a great place to be based for Buxton and the wider area.Staying in early January the hotel was quiet but staff were very friendly and helpful. Sadly, only able to give a rating of 4 rather than 5 because of breakfast experience. Food was excellent and cooked food was freshly prepared but due to low occupancy the continent offer was limited, which wasn't a problem but getting items restocked was difficult as staff were not always available.Ironically, I think if hotel was busier the service would have felt better

I really want this hotel to be a really enhoyable experience, but it feels like it has lost the sense of what it is and is just riding on former grandeur and location. The dining/ drinking rooms are confused as to purpose and we couldn't sit anywhere in the front rooms as chair upholstery was all dirty covered in food. Really hoping it has a make over and is reconsidered in 2020.

We stayed for a weekend. Room 5 was very comfortable and quiet. We ate both evenings in the restaurant. It was lovely to eat fresh food all homemade as opposed to processed freezer food often served in pubs. Staff were friendly and very professional. Vegetarian choice was good and breakfast had good options. We would like to thank all the staff for making our stay so enjoyable

set on a quiet and scenic road not far from the centre of hope, you'll be met by friendly staff and i have to admit my black pudding in chicken, new potatoes, cabbage and sauce melted, throw in a decent choice of starters and desserts not to mention a good choice of alcoholic beverages and your in for a nice dining experience.

I booked a table for 5 people for 16th Dec at 12.15. We all arrived early and the three who were eating ordered before 12.15. Two were just having coffee. Despite the pub being quiet we did not get our meals until 5 past 1. Other people were being served who came in after us. I asked a staff member how long the food would be and she came back with the answer not long. I said how long is not long and she said about 5 minutes. It was another good ten minutes before the food arrived. The festive roast looked very nice but the pie and the lamb kebabs ( minus the skewer as they didn't have any) were not very good-- Tough and nearly cold lamb and a dry looking pie. An experience not to be repeated.
