We were a group of 18 friends who had arranged a private lunch at the Gordon Arms. Bryn's food preparation and Oxana's service excellently complimented each other as we all enjoyed a couple of hours of great socialising.
I would highly recommend this restaurant for a private function of simply for regular dining.

Hate to say it but won’t be back. This has been my regular chip shop for 8 years. The chippy is busy which is great for the owners but the service has just not been the same the last few times & after tonight we definitely won’t return.
Standard practice in a chip ship is order your food & then when it’s packaged your asked for salt vinegar etc, always been this way in Alfie’s too.
The place is too busy so the staff are asking when you order if you want salt & vinegar then you stand waiting. It’s then handed to you in a bag.
Everyone has different tastes or maybe requires extra salt/vinegar you don’t get a chance to see your food as it’s packed it’s just thrown together however & handed to you. I actually fancied sauce whilst I was waiting & again it’s handed in a bag wrapped you don’t get the chance to even ask to add a pickle. It should be packaged in front of you so you have the chance to ask for condiments to your preference so you can add accordingly.
People will say this is a ridiculous comment the owners won’t care as the shop is busy but it’s the difference in enjoying your meal or not enjoying it. Half the chips & the fish I ordered were tasteless it was hardly salted & hardly any vinegar. You should be asked as it’s being wrapped. Just trying to save time when you order & rush customers out the door. Paying full price for a backwards service.
I’ve just moved back to Hamilton & even travelled from Motherwell for the last 4 years to use Alfie’s but won’t be back.
Literalmente no podía fallar. Recomendaría 100% y volvería!
When open (it has now closed permanently); it was a great wee eating house! We went there often. It will be sadly missed, used by many locals, tourists and organisations as an affordable restaurant.
Stunning view and friendly, efficient staff in a small family-run hotel. The quality of food was excellent, but fully grown humans may wish to order two main courses each, such was the rather miserly amount of actual food - scallops and monkfish respective.y - on our plates. Top marks for presentation and taste, but would have loved a little more.
Visited Castle Douglas last week and had lunch at the Scottish Pantry.
Our soup and sandwiches were very pleasant and the soup was piping hot.
Coffee and cake to finish off.
The prices were very reasonable and I would happily recommend it.
Stopped for lunch and enjoyed a wonderful minestrone soup. Deli is in the front and a small cafe in the back. Very friendly staff, very relaxing and reasonable prices. Definitely worth a visit.
Enjoyed a very memorable stay and meal at Haar.
The lobster was personally recommended by Dean and was the best lobster I’ve ever tasted.
The staff were very attentive and the food didn’t disappoint. Looking forward to another visit.
This is a lovely restaurant, just reopened with a new chef. Excellent service, couldn't have done more for us. The food was great, best curry we've had for a long time.
I went with my husband and son and we all enjoyed our meal.
Great little cafe with a nice view. Good coffee and cake, excellent breakfast with dairy free options. Lots of interesting books to browse through. Preferred the breakfast here to the hotel breakfast we had actually paid for, so came back 3 days in a row!
My aunt recommended this place as I was taking her out for lunch and I had never been. I ordered soup and a main course and she ordered a main course and a dessert. After a wait of about 20 mins the waitress arrived with our 2 mains. I told her I was still waiting for my soup. She took my mains away and I told my aunt to start eating before her food got cold. Another 10 minutes later my soup arrived which was in all fairness, piping hot and delicious. Then another 10 minute wait for my own mains to reappear which was stone cold, obviously just left from its previous visit. THEN another waitress appeared to tell me it was 'my fault' for not asking for the soup to be delivered first as they serve the soup there after the main. Never in my 70 odd years have I ever been to a restaurant where the soup is served after the mains. Also noticed the couple on the table next to us were delivered another tables food. The tables were not allocated an individual waitress and they appeared to just go around the various tables at random. It was totally disorganised and to be told the error was 'my fault' was outrageous. I for sure will never return or recommend and my poor aunt was mortified as this place was her idea. I checked my receipt and this whole debacle took around an hour and a half for a snack lunch. Be warned.
We were recommended to try the Silver Spoon cafe by friends. We were not disappointed. Warm welcome, varied choices of cakes. Salted Caramel sponge was huge, so light and tasty. Rocky Road was also good. All reasonably priced.
Great family stop for lunch. We had to split the family due to table availability however the staff were great making our daughters feel great at their own table. Great sandwiches and soup with good cakes to finish up.
Enjoyed a delicious lunch this afternoon at The Ark in Kipford. Cake and coffee also superb. Owner and staff very warm and friendly. Will be coming back next time we are over here.
