Visited Castle Douglas last week and had lunch at the Scottish Pantry. Our soup and sandwiches were very pleasant and the soup was piping hot. Coffee and cake to finish off. The prices were very reasonable and I would happily recommend it.

Food was loverly, but sad to say that they only have dairy milk. I did not see any vegan options on the menu at all, so it limited my choice of what I could have to eat as I have a dairy allergy.. However, the staff was polite and friendly

slightly surprised to read so many poor reviews, but seeing the date of them is mostly 2020, and our visit was early june 21, perhaps things have changed. We are new to the area, recently moved from the East Midlands. We sat outside in the rear garden, took the last table (the jack and jill set up) Waitress quickly came over and brought us menus. Coffee, Tea, and two hot meals from the ample menu. Food was very good, service was friendly and attentive. All staff wore masks (bar a chef who I think popped out for air, and helped a lady put a table umbrella up). Paid by card, but had to move and stand near the rear doors for signal. Didnt have to use the toilets so didnt go inside, in fact until we left we didnt realise there was a large inside seating area. We shall return to try what looks like a very good breakfast ....probably this Saturday.

So much for ‘Be Kind’ during Covid times! My fiancée went into the Scottish Pantry today with our 7 month old daughter and her mum (71 years old). When they arrived in the cafe, and before they had ordered, my fiancée realised that our daughter’s nappy was wet so she went to the toilet to change it, leaving her mum to browse the menu. By the time she came back from the toilet, her mum had realised that none of the waitresses in the cafe were either wearing face coverings or maintaining 1m social distancing with each other or customers. Her mum felt really uncomfortable as she lives with my fiancée’s grandmother who is 88 and has been shielding. As they hadn’t yet ordered, my fiancée assured her mum that leaving wouldn’t be a problem as it didn’t make sense to stay to eat in a place her mum felt really uncomfortable and that probably has a higher risk of infection as the staff aren’t implementing these basic safety measures. She quietly explained to the waitress why they’d decided to go and started getting our daughter into her pushchair. She certainly wasn’t wanting to highlight it to any other customers or make a scene, she just wanted to leave quietly.Whilst she was sorting out our daughter, another waitress came over and proceeded to, very loudly, accuse her of only having come into the cafe to change our daughter’s nappy as if she’d planned on taking advantage of the facilities in some sort of premeditated way. I’m not sure why they would have thought you would need to pretend to be eating in a cafe to use the toilet. If my fiancée had known our daughter’s nappy needed changing but she hadn’t been planning on eating in the cafe, she’d simply have asked if she could use the toilet! The waitress said that my fiancée should have realised that they weren’t wearing face coverings before they sat down but I guess - when you’re juggling a 7 month old, a pushchair and trying to get in from the rain - checking to see that the cafe staff were following recommended safety measures wasn’t the first thing on her mind.My fiancée was so embarrassed and upset that she was almost in tears by the time she left the cafe. Now, I’d been under the impression that cafe staff were supposed to wear face coverings and maintain a 1m social distance but I’m happy to be corrected if I’m wrong. Whether that’s the case or not however, in such strange times as these, this sort of attitude from cafe staff is so unnecessary, when it all could have been dealt with so much more kindly. We definitely won’t be going back!

My family visited here yesterday, and we left with our tail between our legs. They were very busy so we were invited to sit in the garden area for lunch. We were given the menus and the lady came back to take our order. As my mum started to order she first asked for a scone and before she could finish her sentence she was abruptly interrupted and told that ‘we only do lunches not, snacks. We are are far to busy to be serving snacks’.Now we were ordering lunch for a family of 4, 3 of us were having lunch items and mum wanted a scone but we were not given the opportunity to continue our order and we had to leave. The lady was rather rude and we felt awkward so we will not be returning. Please don’t treat others like this, this was my parents first day out in a long time and to be left feeling rather rubbish ruined their day out.

Scottish pantry, Castle Douglas Excellent meal and really nice place too. We arrived after the time for breakfast but was told they could do two more as it was quite quiet. What a breakfast it was, haggis, black pudding, egg, sausage, bacon, beans, mushrooms, tomato and toast. Even a serving of butter. Two teas (in a pot) to wash this culinary delight down which was full to the brim. The toilet was odd as the bog door looked straight to the corridor, perhaps a self closing outer door. Other than that clean and tidy. We were served by a very happy lass who seemed pleased to be at work. Paying was just as simple with an ok expense, worth every penny. Recommend, definitely and said I would put a gleaming review. Return again, absolutely thinking of when can we return.

We had been before but only for coffee so difficult to judge , not many places get coffee wrong , however we decided on lunch which was decidedly average, I opted for the haddock which was your standard catering truck portion and pretty tasteless , average chips and a helping of frozen peas with the pointless small amount of salad to fill the plate . My wife opted for a burger but it was obviously beyond the cook to melt the cheese instead a dollop was thrown on top , not very inspiring at all , all served on stone cold plates which is beyond my reckoning in any eating establishment, why would you put hot food on a cold plate , the waitress blamed the kitchen staff who should know better perhaps they don’t , but they serve the cold plated food and you would think they would twig again perhaps lack of training or maybe this is the norm to some , disappointing in many ways and a little more thought and effort would do no harm .

After visiting in the area i stopped In with my two children. We figured by the signs you can follow a corridor out to the back of the shop and it brings you into a beautiful courtyard. Its was a very hot day so we sat at a huge table with a big parasol listening to the birds in the hedgerow. The food was lovely with generous portions. The food is a mix of snacks such as paninis toasties and also meals such as lasagne etc. The menu is reasonably priced. The waitress was attentive and helpful. Afterwards we nipped into the inside to pay the bill and had a lovely chat with all the staff at the till area. We will definitely be back!

This is a family run business that knows how to look after its customers. We were attracted to this café as it offered a variety of choice of something warming to eat on a coolish June day. Its menu is quite extensive and includes soups, jacket potatoes and burgers as well as sandwiches in various forms. Indeed, their speciality sandwiches offer twelve different fillings in a choice of 6 different breads with 4 different spreads and a coice of 4 out of 9 salad toppings. Or, over 870,000 different varieties! Our choices were hot bacon sandwich (Granary, low fat spread, etc), Jacket potato with cheese and garlic mushrooms and a soup and sandwich combination. All were quickly prepared and served to the correct customer without the waitress having to enquire as to who was having which dish; customer service indeed. Our meals were delicious and plentiful and thoroughly enjoyed by all. The icing on the cake (so to speak) was that two of us were able to find a paperback each among the small collection of second hand books kept at the café for customers to take away for a small donation to charity. We intend to patronise this café again.

We went in to try this restaurant quite late in the afternoon 3.30 and were delighted that the menu was available all day. Not many places in Castle Douglas do this. I ordered fish and chips and was asked if I wanted the fish battered or with breadcrumbs and would I like a full size or pensioner portion. Fantastic as I much prefer breadcrumbed fish and a smaller potion is ideal for me. My husband had the steak pie and chips which was home made and the steak just melted in the mouth. Best he had tasted for a very long time. If you are in Castle Douglas well worth a visit.

I,ve struggled with the overall rating on this. Well it's definitely a high 3 to a four star. Went today Saturday 21/04/18. Went a few years ago and was not impressed but things have definitely changed for the better. The restaurant was packed so we went and found the secret garden . You go back outside walk few doors down the street and thru the gates and you find it. It's lovely shud advertised it. Anyway my wife had the lasagna and salad lasagna was a lovely big plate full looked and smelt lovely so had a taste did not let me down beautiful. I had the cheeseburger and chips with salad and coleslaw. Cheeseburger bang on , coleslaw was good but chips bit overcooked shame they were not homemade but overall good meal, my dad had Mac and cheese with chips , again chips overcooked but the Mac and cheese the sauce far to much sauce and not a lot of taste and seasoning. Prefer it to have less sauce . Had a wonderful beautiful light homemade scone 10/10 for the scone but please get rid of the small butter portions just give a small dish with butter etc in it. Make it a lot cheaper for you and much more environmentally friendly. As I said at the start rating was hard to say but after writing all this I,ve settled on four overall it was very good and the tea was good it's lovely and clean , staff clean and very polite. I,ll be back

Stopped off for a cup of tea and decided to have a scone with jam and cream. When we ordered we asked if we there was cream available and after a few seconds thought the waitress assured us there was. Tea arrived first, sadly a lot ending up dripping on the table when poured. The scones arrived already cut and prepared with jam and cream on them! The cream was the squirty type which was rapidly losing its substance and when we started eating the scones we discovered they had chocolate in them! The cafe was very busy with people who are clearly regulars but as a tourist stop off I would not recommend it.

Came in for a large breakfast whilst wandering around this lovely town. Really good Scottish breakfast with one of the best haggis I have tasted in a long time. It comes from a butcher (Greasons?) just up the road. God quality, great value and lovely coffee.

We had lunch there in July and I ordered a pasta dish. There was not any mention that it would be spicy but it was really hot.I should have sent it back right away, but I said nothing and tried to eat it anyway. I could not eat more than half. My husband ate a quarter of it but could not finish it either (which never happens). When the waitress came over to clear the plates, I mentioned that the dish was not supposed to be spicy, and that we could not finish it. She said "ok" like she could not care less. I was naive enough to think that maybe somebody else would come over and check with us if there had been a problem. That did not happen.I wanted to console myself over dessert and I guess I chose badly, as I could not finish it.Maybe we were just really unlucky that day as other reviews seem really good. Don't know...

We only stopped here for tea and cake but were greatly impressed by the service. Although not long till closing time, the staff were more than welcoming not only to us but also people who came in afterwards- who were apologetic and offered to take their tea as a take away so as not to be any trouble- encouraging us to take our time. Cake was good, menu extensive fish and chip shop fare and the toilet clean.

A very clean and well run eating place offering from scones to fish and chips to pasta dishes to calorie laden sweets. Very friendly and reasonably priced. Often busy which in itself tells a story. Would certainly recommend for lunch or even a midday coffee break.

We popped in here as noticed it really paid a lot of attention to allergies and provided tasty and varied food. We had a delicious #glutenfree scone. For coeliacs it was great to chat to knowledgeable staff who were aware of cross contamination.Great job guys!

My wife and I were on a driving tour and it was lunchtime when we reached Castle Douglas. The town's strap-line boasts it's foodie credentials and this establishment certainly contributes to it's reputation. We had fish and chips for lunch - it was freshly prepared with a light batter and it came up piping hot. Service was timely and particularly welcoming - it seemed that the staff liked working here. Everyone had a smile on their face and there seemed to be genuine care taken to ensure the guests were enjoying the experience. Many of the other diners were clearly regulars and this is always an indication of a good place to eat.

We only went in here as it was late in the afternoon and other places seemed to be winding down.We did have second thoughts as from the outside it looks a bit like a 1970s greasy spoon. Once inside it was much more chique and the coffee and food we had were both very enjoyable.

Ate here with friends yesterday. busy and popular. Both customers and staff are friendly. It is comfortable and relaxing. There is a very good choice for eating. The prices are very keen. The standard of the cooking is of hotel quality A simple, but very good restaurant that deserves its high rating.

Don't let the rather drab exterior of this cafe put you off because the food turned out to be excellent. We had pasta dishes, served in large very hot bowls that meant we weren't chewing on cold pasta after the first few minutes. Plenty of chicken in the Arrabiata and enjoyably spicy too.

Can't visit Castle Douglas without popping into Scottish Pantry for a full breakfast. Every item is top notch - bacon, sausage, haggis, black pud - ingredients locally sourced and staff are happy to tell you where from! Its always busy but that's not a problem, on several visits people have invited us to join them at spare seats at their tables - not matter the breakfast is worth waiting for.My only minor complaint is not enough teabags in the pot to get a good brew - that's fixable though! Let happy, relaxed and full. Happy problem is having no space to sample the many other foodie delights in town ... well not for an couple of hours. Time to walk it off!!

I always visit here when I'm in castle Douglas several times a year or on holiday. Don't even bother window shopping the other places as that will just turn out to be a learning curve, the main Shopping road in CD is one long street so if you park in the big free car park (toilets there) at the top of the hill near Tesco's just head downhill and you'll find the Scottish pantry on the right. Food is great, prices fair and there's 4 and 6 seat tables. Take the advice of someone who's done the legwork you wont be disappointed.

Took a drive to Castle Douglas from dumfries today and stopped in at the Scottish pantry. We had both been before so knew we wouldn't be disappointed. I had the garlic mushroom panini and my partner had the soup and sandwhich combo which came with a lovely looking side salad and crisps aswell as a well filled sandwhich with a good amount of prawns. We also shared the herby fries with garlic dip which were delicious. Service was quick and pleasant although they were very busy!

If I could give more stars I would! We visited here on 2 occasions for food, as a family while holidaying along the road. My partner and I also enjoyed a few drinks in the beer garden on sunnier days. So impressed with the lovely, friendly, helpful staff. The food was really good pub grub, tasty and good value. I should have taken pictures, but I was too busy enjoying it!! Also, a special mention to the lovely wee lady behind the bar who got my rum & coke just right every time (1 ice cube 😉). If we lived locally, we'd be back for sure.

Called in for a snack and a cup of tea and to be honest nothing startling. The staff were fine but quite expensive and the food wasn’t great.

This little cafe serves amazing freshly made Vegan and Vegetarian food. We had delicious Thai dishes mine was tofu and vegetables in tamarind sauce with noodles- one of the best tasting dishes ever! They have a standard menu plus lots of specials. Also cakes and desserts Very reasonable prices with good service.
