Haven't been to the Moonfish in some time but was delighted to be back for lunch. The set menu was great and the food and service was excellent. The meal was rounded off with the most amazing desert I have had in years, almost ordered another! Only drawback is that it's always busy and difficult to get a table.. Reservations ahead of time are a must... I need to be more organised!
Went in for breakfast and received a bagel that was soaking wet with microwaved egg that cost ÂŁ8. Asked for a toasted scone and was told it could be microwaved - not sure why it would be hard to pop it in the toaster or under grill considering you can get toasted ciabatta etc for lunch. Coffees were fine, very very hot. Donât think weâd return which is a shame considering all the good reviews!
We stayed close by at an Airbnb. Ate here atleast 4 times while we were in town. There were 8 of us so we got to taste each others food if we dined together. Sometimes lunch, sometimes dinner; same menu.
Appetizers we tried: Cauliflower Wings. Amazing. Same batter as fish and chips. Had a slight kick to it though. Haggis bon bons were also really good. Heavier outer fried crust but the filling was light and flavorful.
Entrees we tried: Chicken wings and the spice bag are in a curry sauce. My wife doesnât like curry but she had the wings 3 times this week. Theyâre that good. Breaded style but the meat falls off the bone. Hot salmon salad was excellentâŠvery light. Seafood linguiniâŠprobably my favorite. Again, light and lemony no heavy flavors. Bangers and mashâŠI could drink the gravy. Sausages have the texture of a bratwurst. Thyme was a little strong, but not overwhelming. Mashed potatoes were perfect. I didnât have the fish and chips but several family members did and they said it was really good. Also the pasta dish was good. Only neutral was the burgerâŠnot bad but nothing special.
As for service⊠we had several different waitresses while we were here and they were all excellent. There were 2 that stood out, I donât remember their names but they really took good care of us.
And the atmosphere. More than just a pubâŠwith seriously excellent food! Oh I almost forgot the Sticky Toffee Pudding! A large portion of spiced/date cake DRENCHED in butter toffee sauce with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Probably top 3 desserts Iâve had in my entire life. No lie. Its a big portion and its very sweet but SO good.
So bottom line, OâConnors was a high point of our stay in Edinburgh. If we ever come back to town we will definitely stop in.
Fabulous Cozy and Welcoming With exceptional food. Lovely ambience - the chicken skewers with curry were to die for. Reasonably priced with a menu to cater for all tastes.
Sharing our experience for other diners with dietary requirements.
Whilst ordering our food, I spoke to the waiter about my veganism and lactose intolerance and repeated that the dumplings and noodles we ordered should be vegan. I even told him about symptoms I get if I eat dairy. Despite this, we were still served dumplings with milk in, and I ate the whole dish before we were alerted to the mistake.
The waiter was obviously mortified and apologetic. We were given the correct dish and the rest of our meal was fine. The dumplings were free, but nothing else was taken off our bill.
Afterwards I emailed to explain how serious this kind of mistake is, and how sick I would be in the days following. The owners replied with an apology that was below par considering the pain and discomfort I experienced due to consuming lactose. The free dumplings were a nice gesture but I felt like it wasnât enough considering the gravity of the mistake.
Having worked in hospitality for over a decade myself, I completely understand how easy it is for these accidents to happen, but the way it was resolved by the staff and the owners was very disappointing.
Avoid if you have dietary requirements or allergies.
First time visiting this restraunt. Pleasant surroundings outside and lovely dining area in conservatory area.
There were 5 of us here tonight, 19th February 2025. Quiet in restraunt though busier in bar area.
Service was great with friendly staff. There was a good choice on the menu and food was absolutely delicious.
We has steak pie, gammon steak, scampi, fish and chips and pizza. One of our party had starter of black pudding which he said was delicious too.
I will definitely go back and highly recommend this restraunt.

Outstanding. Menu options for adults and kids alike are great and you can stick to the classics or go for something more unusual. Can't really beat the setting either!
