One star off for food, as the portions are pretty small, and one star off atmosphere as it was a Wednesday night albeit busy. Food quality and presentation were both very good, as long as you like fish. A vegetarian wasn't too taken with the main menu option, so another star off. Overall a pricy small meal that was very tasty.

Friendly door service, staff are quick to reach all patrons as there is limited seating, very nice ambience, excellent presentation on the dishes. Vegetarian options are limited, but delicious. 5/5 would recommend for a lunch or dinner if visiting Aberdeen or otherwise, just be sure to make a reservation

The Moonfish Cafe was a excellent introduction to fine dining in Aberdeen. We didn't make a reservation but just added our name to the wait list. We had a 30 min wait and walked over to a pub down the street. The wait was well worth it. The menu was refreshing in that there weren't too many choices and they change often. This type of menu tells you the restaurant concentrates on putting forth high quality food with every meal. I started with the Rarebit appetizer, my main was a filet of beef, and I finished with a cheese plate. The attention to details with every dish was wonderful. Overall, our meal was excellent! We even spent some time talking to Brian, the owner, and he was very hospitable and friendly. Thank you Brian and Moonfish cafe for the wonderful meal!

I went here on Saturday for my birthday and while eating my starter (scallops with lentils) I found 2 stones in the food! It was my birthday so I tried to don’t make a big deal about it and mentioned to the waiter who said sorry and that was it. Neither the chef or manager came to apologize. I put the two stones back on the plate so the waiter could show the chef as they probably came from the lentils. But again, it was like nothing happened. Problem now is that as soon as we got home I noticed one of the stones chipped my tooth. I called back nobody answered. I emailed and even attached a picture of my tooth and haven’t heard back from them. So we paid a full meal over £120 and I got a chipped tooth and zero care from any of them, not even a reply to my email.

We went there on September 25 2024 Wednesday at 7:30 with a reservation saying we were on waiting list. We decided to go anyway thinking that we could wait . When we arrived , we saw that the restaurant was closed and the interior was completely dark. There was no signage indicating when it would reopen. For a Michelin recommended restaurant,!we are really disappointed ☹️

We visited in September 2024 for a birthday meal. The food was exceptional especially the pork ragu starter (not something I would usually order). Everything was so fresh and tasty and well presented. Staff were lovely. Wine was delicious. We ended our meal with a glayva which went down a treat. Would 100% recommend if you’re in Aberdeen We booked to go on a Thursday evening and most tables were taken. It didn’t feel overcrowded as the tables were well placed.

Food was presented very well, fish cooked perfectly. Both fish main and dessert a bit mild for my taste, but that is personal preference. Starters (scallops and pork ragu) was fantastic. Service was great. Tuesday night was ok wrt to number of people but a lot of tables in a relatively small space. Might feel crowded on a weekend.

TL;Dr: Fine, cheapest course is 38£ for a meal, not worth it. A group and I went to the Moonfish Cafe for dinner since we wanted some fresh fish. The food itself, for a Michelin Star restaurant, seemed fine, but somewhat lacking in (artsy but not as impactful flavor wise). The service was good, with everyone being respectful. However, the biggest sticking point is the price. The expected cost was stated between 10-20£, but the lowest cost option is 38£. Is is simply not worth it, in my opinion.

My vacation crew of 8 had dinner here last night. Food was terrific. Not a single calorie was left of the appetizers. Funny sight. Every dish completely empty. My daughter wasn't a fan of the gnocchi but it was good. I enjoyed the halibut. Wish there would have been more of it. 8 people was £557 so not cheap. Then again, we had lots of cocktails which were fairly priced. It was pretty loud inside but that's happy people.

Opinion from a French woman who has the habit of going to non-starred French restaurants in the Michelin guide Following a visit to this Scottish restaurant present in the guide, I think that the criteria are not the same as in France As a starter, asparagus gratinated with parmesan, I have already made the same at home As a main course, a perfectly cooked fish, excellent fennel with a kind of sauerkraut that doesn't fit at all with the rest from my point of view, but here I wouldn't judge, this dish perhaps being a function of Scottish tastes Dessert, a hot clafoutis with a big spoon of cream on top, no research, and my mother's clafoutis is better On the service side, young people crossing their arms behind the bar (the one I think is the manager was nevertheless very pleasant) In the kitchen we see the cooks chatting while we wait 45 minutes between each dish (when we see 3 cooks and 3 servers for less than 40 seats we don't really understand this wait) And the noise, horrible! Impossible to enjoy any food amid so much noise. As much as I have sometimes been concerned about an inequity between price and quality, but here I would not even go so far as to judge the price given that basically, little of anything was suitable. A positive point though, the children had fish and chips

Excellent food, Excellent Service, Excellent menu choice overall. I would highly recommend this quaint little restaurant opposite the church. Staff are polite and courteous which in this modern society we live in has become almost impossible to find. It's refreshing to find this type of service. We spent just over an hour here. To what I believe has the 100% potential to be Michelin star quality very soon indeed. The quality of food you taste on each and every mouthful is a delight on the taste Presentation is excellent as seen in photos. And this is what's special about this place. It ticks all the boxes in the itinerary. Bravo Moonfish Cafe. Great food.

Such a lovely meal! It was early Wednesday so not many people, but I think the place would work even full. Simple, calming and very comfortable room. Lots of wine and gin choices. Server recommended the perfect wine. We each had the 3 course meal- starter, main and dessert / cheese plate. we had oysters and broccoli as starters, the hake and chicken for mains and the lemon posset and cheese plate for dessert. Flavors were great- clever mix of familiar/comfortable with just enough difference to be interesting. Also everything was rich enough to be special but not regretfully heavy. Presentation and service were top notch. Left trying to figure out how I can get back to try the other menu items in the last 2 days I am in Aberdeen. I would come back here just to have another meal there!

Fantastic as usual and one of the only places in Aberdeen to do something original with food, but 2 1/2 hours for amuse-bouche and 3 courses is perhaps stretching things a bit (especially when the normal maximum allocated time is 1h45min - then you should be able to let people have their meal in that time span). Service impeccable.

Hidden gem off the beaten track which we knew about but never got around to going. We made a reservation mid week (Wed) for lunch, which wasn't a busy time when we arrived. Simple and very nice decor with tables set out for around 34 people. We opted to share the small plate of Grilled Flatbread Mussels , Wild Garlic Butter and our large plates were Hake Motoyaki, Aubergine, Miso Glaze, Coriander & Roasted Cod, Jersey Royals, Grilled Onions, Beurre Blanc with no dessert on this occasion. The food was delicious, perfectly cooked and presented beautifully. I highly recommend this wee gem and hopefully return to sample the food in a dinner setting on our next visit. Thank you!

We've been here twice before. Both times on an itison voucher, not to say that made it a cheap meal out by our standards at £75 before drinks. The first time we went in for lunch pre-covid times, both of us really loved the whole experience and vowed to go back again someday so when I saw there was a new voucher I bought it immediately. This time we went back for an early evening meal. Maybe it was just that our tastes are not cultured enough but this time we just didn't enjoy the majority of the food. Of the two starter plates, we both loved the parfait but the other thing, I forget the name but a little cheesy bread thing just wasn't enjoyable. Next course was partridge breast. Again, maybe this was just my lack of fine dining food experience but there were parts on the underside that looked raw to me so didn't finish the dish as it put me off. Next course was cod with vegatables in a Thai sauce. I liked some elements of the dish, but found the cod itself to be a bit soggy, lacking in any flavour and unappetising. Desert, chocolate tarte, no complaints whatsoever - it was amazing! Other than having to wait over half an hour for it to be served after clearing our last plates away. Shame about the food not being for us and the long wait for our desert. Other than that the staff were all great, attentive and polite. I'm afraid based on our enjoyment of the food last visit, this isn't somewhere we are likely to return to.

I was out for a meal with my family at this restaurant. The food was lovely, amazing seafood and well presented. The service was good and the staff were welcoming. I understand that it is a popular restaurant and is often at full capacity but the volume was very loud. I think possibly because of the acoustics of a small area with a high ceiling which made it hard to talk with my family. The restaurant doesn’t seem to have air conditioning as during our meal it was uncomfortably warm inside. Thanks.

Very good food and value for the quality actually pretty good for pricey Aberdeen. Service was lacking (speed and incorrect billing) but this didn’t annoy as much as other significant concerns with this restaurant. The dining room is cramped and so noisy it is difficult to understand conversations on your own table. Uncomfortable chairs are provided but the tables were unacceptable. Stickier than a bar floor on a Saturday night, menus, glasses and anything that was on the table stuck to it and it was very unpleasant to be sat at them let alone eat off them. We were informed the stickiness was due to a Covid disinfectant used that had ruined the surface of the tables and they were going to close two days to address this “at some point!” A visit to the ladies restrooms by my wife and friend also raised the issue of an apparently long term leaking toilet which had soaked and rotted the floor so the door would not close properly. Raising this with one of the staff we were informed “they were aware but we’re going to close for two days at some point to fix it!” Such a pity but clearly Moonfish is living off its genuinely great food and it’s past. It desperately needs an investment so with regret I could not recommend it until after investment in the basics is made.

We went out for lunch with a group of 5. We made a reservation due to the fact that Moonfish Cafe had a Michellin recommendation for six years in a row. We were somewhat disappointed... After we were seated, we noticed that the table was very sticky and dirty. We didn't hit it off with the staff as well. This might be due to the fact that we had different expectations; we asked to be surprised with the menu, but the waitress did not get this. This led to an awkard moment; this was totally our fault. But the food was mediocre, dirty glasses, tasteless dishes, below average wine and warm beer (from a can). The service was okay, but nothing out of the ordinary. The price was okay, but do not expect Michellin standards, that just is not the case here.

Would have loved to have given this more. Independantly owned, well established restaurant that has survived the down turn of oil and gas in the city, along with the enslaught of covid. Although not a complete right off, there were enough negatives to prevent a higher score. The crayfish starter was fine, but nothing to write home about or whip up in 10 mins in your own kitchen. The fish and potatoes in the halibut main course were fantastic, however the wilted spinach hadn't been drained and sat in a pool of water. I queried the ducks egg with this dish, as parts were hot, parts were cold....it was supposed to be served cold, however on the side of a hot plate, ended up half/half. There is no door through to the kitchen from the restaurant and any atmosphere in the restaurant is broken with the noises from there and the strip light in your eyeline (if you're facing that direction). Endless pick ups of our jackets from the floor and no offer to put in the cloakroom didn't help our experience, nor did the very direct "we need your table back for 8" on arrival...no courteous greetings..."how are you, how was your day" etc. My hubby's vegetarian, and the Beetroot and cheese wonton starter, along with the souffle were great. Just unfortunate that with the negatives, prevents us venturing there again or recommending.

I walked past the restaurant a while back on the lovely cobbled street of Correction Wynd and it looked cosy and welcoming so decided must go sometime. Went for dinner and was very disappointed. The website said they had a relaxed atmosphere but this didn't seem to extend to our main waitress who was tense and uncommunicative. I asked what turbot rarebit was and she said its just a piece of turbot - it turned out rarebit meant cheese on top. The turbot was nicely cooked and the dish was fine without being spectacular. Our waitress seemed peeved when my girlfriend refused a wine top up (as designated driver). I tried to lighten it by smiling and saying she was driving but she just walked off without a word. Very odd I thought. Another waitress who took bread to our table was breezy and smiled and asked how we were - the contrast couldn't have been greater. My starter was crayfish salad, the mint in the yoghurt overpowered everything - this was not nice. My girlfriend had smoked duck to start and pork medley (cheek, belly, fillet) and said everything was very nice. There were good things about the service - our water was replaced without having to ask and the dishes were removed in a timely fashion once we had finished a course. Our waitress came with the bill, I paid in cash and asked for change - it came back and was put on the table without a word and without looking at me. Again very odd and contributed to what was, in the end, a poor experience overall.

We had high expectations. On our last visit we had the most delightful evening. This time we booked a table in advance. Got there at time at eight o'clock. The tiny place were over crowded with a lot of noise. We got a miniature table in front of the toilet door. The aperitifs were refreshing. We were promised another table. We ordered a bottle of Riesling and were again promised a better table. The Riesling was gentle and pleasant. Bread and butter came on the table and we were for the third time promised another table. We ordered the 4 cause menu. The dark sourdough bread was massive and delicious. We finally at half past eight we got the other table. It was equally small, noisy and sticky. The cured salmon was sublime with a hint of heat. The smoked duck was also very well prepared. To beautiful starters to our delight. We finished the dishes and waited and waited and waited. Twenty minutes past nine came the mains. The turbot was acceptably cooked but the slised potatos packed in a cube was raw and unedible. The pork belly had more time to improve in the owen. Tender and moist, a tru delight together with the cauliflower. The desserts were worth waiting for. The chocolate fondant were slightly over done. There were stil a small amount of liquid chocolate left in the middle. The rhubarb trifle a true delight. It would have been perfect even with out the colourfull decor pearls on top.

Spiced cake and liquorice ice cream was one of the best desserts I've ever had, beautifully composed, and rich enough to be perfectly cut through by some white wine. 5/5 easily one of the best meals I've had in Aberdeen.

One of the best meals i’ve had this year. Before visiting Aberdeen, I’d read reviews and looked at the menu but I honestly was not inspired. Arriving at the restaurant, again I thought it looked rather simple and casual. Then reading the menu I was again not very inspired. But oh my I was wrong, the food was mind blowing, it was sooo good I wanted to come back the next day. My starter consisted of scallops buried inside a puff pastry in the form of an actual scallop. Wow, so yummy and so cool. My main had an Indian kick to it with the sauce although it was falafels and a hake piece. My partner’s food was also incredible and we honestly felt that anything one orders will be great in this place. As mentioned, the place was very simple and cosy without any specific decoration or anything. Staff were very simple, nothing incredible. Service took a while to be honest but we didn’t mind so much. Value for the meal was great also, 75£ for two for a two course meal and a drink; it felt like a bargain. This restaurant is close to Michelin star status in my opinion. Highly recommend.

Delightful lunch here at Moonfish. For many years this was a regular lunchtime spot when I worked in Aberdeen Town Centre and I missed it. The food is just as good, and the menu is as interesting as ever. The staff are great, easily and enthusiastically answer questions about the food and take an interest in what we think. This is a small busy place and making a reservation is recommended, the lunchtime helpings are just right for a midday meal. We enjoyed being here, but be aware it's a busy place which can be noisy. Also the booking site give very strict times for occupation of the table. I think we had 1 hour 45 minutes for a table of two - which is more than adequate. No idea if they allow longer in the evenings. Thanks to everyone at Moonfish, and a special thanks to the chef for creating such a great menu!

Magnificent. One of my favourite restaurants in Aberdeen. I had preconceptions before going that the food would be tiny portions and I hoped it wouldn't be overrated. The menu was well thought out, fresh and cooked impeccably. I believe the owner was a finalist on MasterChef and the quality of cooking shows. I'm already looking forward to the next time I come here! Edit: Another trip, this time we had complications with our party being unable to attend and Moonfish were excellent at working around us. The food as ever was exquisite and I still think this is the best restaurant in Aberdeen .

Lovely waiting staff but the food was a disappointment. To start I ordered the prawn toast which was basic and greasy. Two of us ordered monkfish for the main course and it was served barely warm and raw. We sent the monkfish back and instead I was served halibut which was also raw... and the other monkfish came back again still raw...We enjoyed the dessert which was on the house. I have seen a lot of older reviews for this restaurant which are good - maybe they have changed the chef... I would not recommend.

We had a large office party of 18 who all left with only great things to say about the meal! We preordered which made things easier on the night. Would definitely recommend for larger groups. Particular highlight was all the jerk sauces!

Disappointing works Christmas meal last night, focaccia was basically pizza base with rosemary and salt, soggy lasagne main had no garnish or sides , veggie pizza was bland, plus compulsory 15% service charge for a large group. Lazy, soulless cooking.
