Sunday carvery… this was OK, average at best. We had a standard plate which was quite small. The beef was nicely cooked. Veg and potatoes just acceptable. Not good value for money though. I paid over £40 for two carveries and two small soft drinks. That seemed extortionate to me!

it doesn't matter what time you order food it should always be eatable. orderd chicken about 11 it come cremated my tip is if you order chicken from here make sure its sooner than later ? the later it gets the more the chicken becomes dry thay think its OK to sell it

Birthday meal ruined - my partner booked us a weekend stay for my birthday and booked the restaurant for Friday and Saturday. After eating there Friday I realised unless I wanted the same meal for my birthday too, we needed to book somewhere else. Unfortunately due to short notice we could not book anywhere. My partner went to reception to ask if the chef could prepare a chicken dish for me as there was none on the menu and it was my birthday meal. The reception staff got back to my partner and said the chef would be delighted to prepare me a dish with a sauce, so far so good I thought. When ordering I made a point of telling the waitress the chef was preparing me a special chicken dish as it was my birthday. When the dish came it was the most bland meal I have ever had in a restaurant just a plain chicken breast, a few potatoes and broccoli, oh and a pot of red wine jus which I had the night before with beef. I am not a chef but know that red wine just does not go with white meat. There was no effort at all. I did not say anything at the time as my partner had gone to a lot of trouble arranging the weekend. When we got home I got in touch with customer services, after a while they did reply and I was put in touch with a manager who I spoke to, I was promised the chef would prepare my another meal if we went again and his excuse was that he was not told, even though when looking around the quiet restaurant there was only me having chicken as its not on the menu. I said it was too far to travel for us just for a meal, then I was promised bubbly in the room and discounted rates of £200 per night in April. We actually looked up the rates on the website for our dates and they were less than the "discounted rates" I was offered. When I queried this I have got no response to date, and it has been 5 weeks since. The customer service is almost non existant as I have had to chase this myself and then I get asked to send all my emails and who has promised us this deal as if I am lying. Well its just not worth the effort anymore and I do not want to come back, there are far better places to eat and stay with much better customer service!!

We had a very nice lunch with a friendly service from start to finish and good food. As another reviewer had commented, too many dogs, one in particular was very vociferous throughout our lunch. The owners were oblivious. We are dog lovers and have owned them in the past but we feel that everywhere you go to eat these days dogs are almost always allowed. The Courtyard Cafe has an outside seating area which ok isn’t great when it rains but please Castle Howard consider providing a dog free zone. Thank you.

My 'Hot Beef Sandwich ' consisted of a dried out roll, a few tasty onions+mushrooms, one very small piece of delicious looking beef and two dreadful slices of 'spotty' slices of beef from a supermarket packet which were 'hidden' under the unadvertised topping. Slight argument when I asked for a refund. Was told the beef had been kept warming on a hot plate but not for how long. My daughter had already had to return a packet of crisps with a best before date of 2023.

This is a very inviting pub but had originally gone for food as the reviews said, however we was told by the lady behind the bar that they Don’t serve food. So we had a drink then left, nice staff though.

We are walking some of the coast to coast and are staying at the Black Swan. We realised too late that the information we received from our travel agent about this restaurant was outdated. It used to be a creative dining experience, but now it is pretty terrible pub food . look elsewhere.

It's like finding an oasis in a desert. This place is lovely. It's clean, quick and the food was great and reasonable. Located in the village part of Dalby Forest. Approx 3.5 mi into the woods from Thornton-le-dale. The trail is marked but recommend taking a map as well. For cars it's pretty obvious with a car park nearby. The village area is accessable for everyone. After the walk in from Thornton, this was a lovely half way stop. Very much enjoyed my wrap. Friend had sandwich, also very good. Service was spot on. Thank you
