I have already posted an honest, kind review of GMEC but it has been a year and I am pleased to say, still the same friendly staff and breakfast is just as good. Staff always take an interest in visitors and are happy to offer advice to motorbikers who visit. It is a biker thing and as an ex biker I can fully relate. The cafe goes from strength to strength. Sadly however, there are no longer any bikes for sale. Still a good place to stop off for a bacon sandwich or a full breakfast and I will be back for certain.

Me and the wife have been with our friends quite a few times after visiting Scarborough on our motorbikes, they have a very good choice of food on the menu basically food and taste for everyone, if you order the fish and chips be prepared as the fish is the size of a whale ( well nearly) it hangs off both edges of your plate, in fact, all the portions on the menu are generously sized and tasty and very good value for money. Definitely not a place to drive past if you are hungry.

Absolutely unique, friendly, good food, reasonable prices and motorbikes. I struggle to write anything negative ... maybe include a few more motorbikes for sale ;) Just because there are a lot of motorbikes parked outside don't drive on an ignore. You are made to feel very welcome and it is a place to return to because they really do remember you.

We stayed at humble bee farm late last year with our springer spaniel Daisy. It was lovely to come across a pub with real traditional character, the fire was lovely as we were quite cold from our day out! I had cider and my parter had one from the selection of real ales and fair to say we were both ready for them! Friendly service and locals with their dogs enjoying their afternoon. We decided to order some food as all we had was a BBQ at humble bee farm and couldn't be bothered ourselves, I ordered a steak and ale pie and my partner a steak. Both tasted sensational!! The onion rings so crispy and full of flavour everything was just amazing! My partner is also a head chef and has been for years and a good one at that and he was blown away! We returned everyday throughout our stay and would defiantly come again when visiting Scarborough :D Thankyou again and we will see you hopefully in the future :)

Lovely little pub with a real fire to sit by. Very quiet on the night we visited with just one other customer...a man and his dog! Menu was very limited which was a shame and the food took a long time to arrive but at least we know it was freshly cooked! Cajun chicken was nice and tender and the chunky chips were lovely but way too many! My partner had steak and ale pie which had lovely puff pastry on the top and the steak was very tender but it was about 10 mins before we could eat as the puff pastry was taken off to reveal gravy the temperature of molten lava! Food was at best typical pub grub but a reasonable price so can't grumble too much. Maybe this place is better when busier as I felt on show due to us being the only people eating. There seemed to be a dining area/ restaurant not in use. Thanks to the landlord for making us feel welcome.

A murky winter afternoon was soon dispelled by entering the bar. A wonderful open fire dispelled the gloom to be followed by fantastic soup, sandwich where the filling far outweighed the bread and THE MOST AMAZING chips ever. We had 2 large mixed meat dinners, a medium and a small. We all should have had a small as the large and medium were huge, but very tasty and the gravy was delish. Eight of us spent a good deal of money here they only had two pies left so presumed they were popular. They had no Guinness as they had none on tap sold it out of cans bit of a cheat as cans are not as expensive good mark up for them I feel. My husband's potatoes were under cooked some raw other members of party had some the same, his salad was limp with to much dressing so paid £9.95 for a bit of scampi My omelette was flat eggs just splattered in a pan could not taste cheese did not look appetizing the chips were nice. Grandson got abit of eggshell on hisplate he had a burger! They never asked if everything was ok when I complained I was told she couldn't do anything other than give me the manager s phone number. NOT GOOD practice someone should be in charge an able to sort it out. We were on holiday and felt poorly treated. We had to dine in the bar as we had a dog which was ok but it would have been nice if patrons and staff had not smoked in the door way as it was a small area and unpleasant. I would not recommend this pub to anyone.

Greeted with a warm welcome and we both ordered the locally caught Haddock and chips for ourselves and the scampi for my son. They were very flexible with the menu and advised that we could have whatever we want as a side(s). What arrived was Jaws on a plate with the fattest home cooked chips I've ever seen...amazing! Driving along the A64 my partner said let's stop at a pub for some dinner. Famous last words. Stopping at the hare & hounds , it looked a lovely country pub from the outside but the inside was a total polar opposite. Rubbish in the fire grate a dirty interior. WHY DID I NOT LEAVE !!Thinking it could be in the charm of the place and we might get a good home cooked meal we decided to stay. How wrong we were when the food came it was horrible they had no steak no burgers and what they did have was over laced with salt. Then the landlady came in and obviously loves the sound of her own voice. Then to top it off the barmaid insisted on using constant swear words at the bar oblivious to the fact we had kids with us. We found this place en route to Staithes. The first impression was that the place was very dark and cold, so we decided to eat outside as it was warmer. There were four of us and we all ordered sandwiches. Our drinks were brought out to us and the tea was served in a china tea pot and cups, which was a nice touch. The first order of sandwiches arrived, which were very tasty and served with big chunky chips. However our friends waited and waited and eventually had to go in and ask. The explanation? The chef couldn't read the writing as it was too small so had just ignored it! So by the time our friends got their meal we had finished ours. So in conclusion, the food was ok, but we would probably give it a miss if we were back that way.

Went for a meal here after passing it on the way to our caravan holiday in Cayton. We were attracted by the signs outside advertising lobster, home cooked meals and real ales. The night we went there was no real ales only one beer and lager, there was no lobster on offer and, despite being near Whitby and the coast, there was only one choice of fish on the menu. It did seem to be home cooked though. The restaurant was tired looking and the voices from the bar were easily carried through....including the bad language. We were certainly disappointed with what had promised to be a lovely place for the last meal of our holiday

One of the kids had a burger which was almost raw in the middle. I had the mixed grill which had a dry bit of steak and cheap bland sausages. When we complained they informed us that the chef was new and had been spoken to. Went in for lunch with the family, as we had not been before and live fairly local. We were told to take a seat in the bar area which had a nice open fire. The lunch menu was ok if a little obvious. The service was a mixed bag, with one being quite friendly and helpful and the other being quite grumpy and bordering on rude. The overall effect was to make us feel as though we were intruding rather than welcome. When the food arrived it was ok, the home made chips were large, rustic and quite nice. The 'home made' burgers were a little dry but passable with plenty of accompaniment including some pretty good onion rings. There were no vegetarian options shown on the menu so we asked at the bar and were offered an omelette or a cheese tart. The cheese tart was nice but was covered in a slab of what looked to be cheap red cheese. We were told there were no pudding options other than ice cream so we paid the bill and left. We visited at the end of September returning from a day trip to York whilst staying at The Bay Filey. We passed this establishment in the morning and thought it would be nice to stop for dinner on the way home. It looked good for the outside. In the end up this was our last and by some distance worst meal of our holiday. We visited a different village pub in the area each night for food. A few gripes. By no means a snob but the guy that served us was dressed very scruffy. This wouldn't have bothered us but it sums up our perception and experience. There was a specials board which wasn't mentioned to us but seemed to be made available to other diners. The menu was small but even more limited by what they didnt have available from it. The food was very average. I had steak and ale pie but no mention was made that there would be large chunks of mushrooms in it. Prawn Cocktail was served in a pint glass, which was unusual. After our meal we were left to sit for around half an hour with nobody coming near us and nobody offered us pudding. We all had the feeling that we weren't really wanted there. 5 very disappointed adults. Not good enough and wouldn't recommend. So when we saw they had a steak night we though why not, 2 steaks with all the trimmings and a bottle of wine to share for £33 not bad! Well it was absolutely amazing when we turned up to our error we judged on the fact all the staff looked very young, however they were the most perfect group ive ever come across, so efficient and polite and friendly, they made sure everything was okay but didnt bother you constantly! The food was to die for and cooked to perfection, so much that we just had to try their dessert platter! We ordered fish and chips and were guided towards choosing cod over haddock as it was the catch of the day. It was easily the nicest we’ve had in a long time. The owner then proudly informed us of the pub’s produce all coming from within a 20 mile radius – supporting local farming & fishing communities. It's always nice to support establishments with a low carbon footprint but, more selfishly, you can taste the low food miles in the quality of the grub. A stop off at the Hare & Hounds is likely to become a feature of our seaside trips. Thanks again.

I visited The Hare and Hounds with my mum on the way back from Filey on a Wednesday evening. It looked nice from the outside so decided to stop for something to eat.The lady at the bar was very nice and friendly. We read the menu, it was quite limited but there were dishes on there we thought we would like. There were 2 tables of 4 so quiet really. We initially sat on a table by the window but decided to move as it was so sticky the napkins were stuck to the table, we moved to a table which looked like it was under the stairs and some wood backing kept falling off near your feet so moved again. I ordered steak and ale pie and my mum ordered gammon. We waited nearly 45 mins for the food to come out despite only being 2 other tables in, whilst we were waiting what I thought was the "chef" in a filthy uniform walking in and out of the eating area in and out to get an onion, ice cream then go back with ice cream, surely it would be more practical to store these in the kitchen or not having to walk in and out, opening and closing the back door when people are eating and then a waitress started polishing cutlery on the table next to us. Another 2 people came in, ordered and they got their food before us, I was about to complain and the food arrived. My Steak and Ale pie was on a plate far too small, you have a mountain of chips and a big puff pastry on top that you can't put anywhere. The pie was ok to start with but beef was welded to the bottom and burnt so think it had been in the oven too long, the rustic chips were soggy and tasted of grease, so didn't eat much. My mum had gammon and that was huge, gammon was far too salty, egg was burnt underneath and chips again were greasy, she hardly ate anything. We waited a while and no staff could be seen to ask for the bill, I got up and went to the bar and only member of staff there was the nice lady who served us earlier and no sign of management otherwise I would have complained, it wasn't her fault so just paid and left.We went to the toilet on the way out, past the kitchen with food left out with a mixing bowl with something in uncovered and stunk of grease. Toilet door wouldn't lock and hand dryer out of order. The reviews for food on here have generally been good so maybe this is a different chef. This was my first visit and will certainly be my last.

We visited The Hare and Hounds on our way back from Scarborough on Wednesday 29th July There was a few people in which is a good sign. We ordered Paninis which came with gorgeous, freshly made chips. They were absolutely scrummy. We finished our meals and visited the toilets before we carried on our journey. My goodness, what a shock. The floors were really dirty, as though they hadn't seen a mop for quite a while. The hand dryer wasn't working either. My husband said the gents were dirty too. The pub looks lovely from the outside, and its quite evident that it is an old building. However, I would eat there again as the food was so good

We were first through the door for lunch so we were served straight way, the landlord being efficient but not what I would call 'mine host' and he was quite brusque in manner. We chose a table furthest from the open back door as it was a cold day with a strong wind blowing. After a short time several other couples, families came in with many leaving their coats, those that took them off soon put them back on.I heard many say how cold the room was so after ordering I asked all the other customers (about 16) if they were cold, ALL said they were, so I asked the landlord if I could shut the door as we were all cold.He was again brusque saying I could but the room would soon get too hot.The pub had a commercial radio station playing with lots of chat, adverts and of course the news, I politely asked one of the waiters if we could have some background music on, he said he would see, nothing changed so we had to listen to the commercial radio station all through our meal, which I found strange for a pub.The meal itself was OK, we had 2 special hare and hounds chicken and a stacked burger. It stated on the door that there was a, 'Proper Yorkshire Welcome', as a Yorkshireman, I don't think so.We won't be back.

We called in here en-route to Scarborough. it seemed a convenient place to pull over and eat. We ordered drinks and food and went outside to wait for our food, Nothing fancy, two Burgers, a Panini and a Ham sandwich. after 50 minutes I enquired where our food was. The gentleman I spoke to was polite and said it was ready, I mentioned we'd been waiting 50 minutes, his colleague chipped in "so has everyone else on the A64" How rude I thought. two things, sarcasm to customers is seldom well received and if there is likely to be a wait for food perhaps it would be useful to inform the customer of that so they can make an informed decision as to whether to order or not.I can say the food was lovely, the sarcasm and long wait, less so.

We ate lunch here on the way to the coast. Its fine as a lunch stop, the food was lovely, freshly cooked & nicely presented. It is a pub, not a restaurant, so bear that in mind when wanting to dine. The lady on the till was rather unorganised, & dishevelled, and whistled through to the kitchen staff, which was comical. All in all a bit unprofessional, but ok for a decent bar meal.

Went into the pub, welcomed by lovely bar staff. Promptly got our drinks and had a look at the menu. They also had a selection of specials on; mains and deserts. I had a simple mushroom and cheese omelette and my other half had a delux burger. The presentation of the food was gorgeous. And the taste of the food certainly matched up the the presentation. The chips were golden homemade; delicious! And the burger was homemade, and did also taste yummy! Defiantly be back again shortly as we are only local to the area. Great atmosphere.

We stopped here by chance on the way back from Harrogate as we were staying in nearby Filey. The fire was roaring and the landlord gave us a hearty welcome, as did the locals in there too. We ordered our food, which when it came was huge! The portions are amazing, and all home cooked. We had two courses, and both were lovely. I particularly loved by Whitby Scampi! My husband is into real ales, and had a special one that was on the Tour De Yorkshire bike ride that was due to happen the following day. He then tried a different one, and commented how well the ales were kept and also the knowledge that the landlord had about the different ales, advising which ones would be best based on what my husband liked. A nice country pub, with good food. Very enjoyable.

Situated on the A64 York road the Hare and Hounds stands at the cross road of the busy Wolds junction. We decided to stop off here on our way home from a day out at the coast and was not disappointed, not a modern pub but very traditional and homely. We took mains from the menu and had a couple of glasses of wine with the meals as well, for 4 of us this was good value for money, we only had mains but it was excellent we had one scampi dish, 1 hare & hound chicken, 1 gammon and I cujun chicken with home made chips, salad and veg, including tip as well came in at £50 for the 4 of us. Excellent will be stopping here again. staff and owner were very friendly and easy to deal with.

We arrived just short of the coast at The Hare and Hounds to grab a bit of lunch. The owners were very welcoming, especially with the little ones, and as we were in a large group pulling two tables together was no problem. There was a good choice of "pub grub" on the menu (some meals two for £12) and a good selection for the kids meals too. When the food came it was hot and tasty, and the home-made chips were the biggest I've ever seen (and delicious to boot). Had a cheeky pint of ale and that went down easily too. Has a cosy atmosphere with a fire, and there's a separate dining room/lounge if the place is busy. Will stop again next time we're coast-bound!

Friendly staff and plenty of food. It's not fine dining but if you want good quality and good quantity you can't go wrong. Good selection of beers too. I wouldn't recommend having a starter though as you would have no room for a main. Only disappointment was the bread and butter pudding was a mix of very hot and still frozen, not long enough in the microwave. Would still go again.

What more could you ask for? On our travels in the "lands of the north", we came upon this pub/restaurant due to hunger pangs requiring us to stop. We were greeted by very pleasant staff along with a superb collection of real ales! What a gift from the gods! We sat in the very stylish restaurant area and chose our meals from the menu and were presented with meals that were fit for a king that were piping hot and very very tasty. Really enjoyed our visit and we look forward to re-acquainting ourselves with the Hare & Hounds Staxton very soon. I urge you all to visit this rare diamond in a new increasing land of "characterless" pubs run by large pub companies who care little for good food and good customer service. Support your traditional hostelries!

We visited the Hare and Hounds for a night out with some friends a couple of weeks ago. We were a bit sceptical as from the outside it looks nothing and have passed it lots of times but not gone in. To say we were pleasantly surprised would be an understatement, It was BRILLIANT!!!! The service was second to none.. the staff were attentive and nothing was too much trouble. They had a roaring fire going which made it even more welcoming, though to be truthful both myself and one of our friends did find it a little bit cold so maybe additional heating may be added when they have finished their re-furb.. which is due to start soon I believe. As for the food.. well it was fantastic!! All home made with proper chips and proper gravy!! All in all everything was superb including large potions of fresh veg served in tureens, so we could have as much or as little as you wanted which I prefer. I will be defiantly coming back and hopefully will have the lobster next time!!! I would have no problem in recommending the Hare and Hounds to anyone.

We stopped in at the Hare and Hounds for a meal on our way home from a weekend break. It was dark, cold and wet outside, so the welcome of a roaring fire was very much appreciated. The staff were very welcoming, friendly and attentive. We decided to sit in the dining room and the barman immediately tried to light a fire for us. When it failed to light, he made up a table for us in the corner of the bar, right next to the fireplace. He was very cheerful and nothing seemed to be too much trouble, which was greatly appreciated on a cold wet night. There was a nice selection of beers and our meal was absolutely lovely, accompanied by what we both thought were the best chips we've ever had anywhere! The vegetables were also very good indeed. And considering the portion size of this lovely meal, we though it was very reasonably priced.Although it was lovely and warm in the bar, I would recommend eating in the dining room, due to the...shall we say "choice"... language used by some of the regulars in the bar...especially if you're visiting with children! It's a small village pub which clearly has its own colourful locals! Having said that, I can nevertheless recommend the Hare and Hounds for its lovely food and first class service.

Lovely food, everything home made and fresh, very good value. Staff were welcoming and chatty, open fire to make it cosy, only reason for not giving 5 star is the lighting in the restaurant was a bit depressing, felt like they were ready to shut. Maybe a few candles or lamps needed?

On driving back to York from Scarborough, around 5pm, we stopped for some food.Lovely little pub, open fire and lovely dog Adam greeted us.Good hearty food was delivered, starting with garlic mushrooms, which were delicious. My wife has a prawn cocktail, which was presented beautifully, with more prawns than my wife could remember having before.Unfortunately, my first choice of a Lamb Shank had sold out, so I had a chicken and bacon meal, with lovely new potatoes.Welcoming bar staff and good atmosphere, well recommended.

Had a great mid week meal here. From walking in the door the barman and locals (and Adam the dog) were extremely welcoming of us all including our lively two year old. Lots of choice on the menu which was very reasonably priced. The presentation could not be faulted and the portion size was very generous. Would call here again when visiting the area.

We were six walkers tramping the Yorkshire Wolds Way and came 'off piste' to sample the delights of this rather attractive way side inn. Unfortunately, practically all the beers were off, but the bar person allowed us to go through all the pumps in turn rather than being helpful and informing us of what was actually available. In fact he seemed mightily put out by our arrival. However, we don't want to be negative just on one visit - we don't have experience of an evening visit and we didn't eat there (other reviews are very favourable on this point). For the benefit of Wolds walkers setting out from Filey (and nothing to do with the merits of the Hare and Hounds) a more suitably timed lunch stop is the Foxhound at Flixton.

The barman was nice and friendly, as were the locals in the bar side, although one had the biggest nastiest looking bulldog we'd ever seen, luckily well restrained! We did not stay to sample food and drink, but on entry the place was very dirty including floors, tables etc and there was a smell of wet dogs. I went to the Pub while on route to the East Coast. The bar man/ Landlord was a pleasant character and passionate about all the pub had to offer. My partner and I decided to eat and the food was amazing, they actually keep live lobster onsite and cook it amazingly. There is a traditional pub grub menu also and its not expensive (£17.95 for a whole lobster!). The bar stocks a variety of hand pulled beers which vary week by week. The pub is very traditional and warm it even sports a open fire in the bar and restaurant. We will go again next time we head up the A64

Lindsey and the team never disappoint at this lovely country pub. In our opinion this is certainly the best Sunday lunch anywhere in the Ryedale area. We visited again after a few months break over the summer and the standards remain really high and reminded us what we had been missing. In addition to the food the welcome and personality of all the staff is first class. We live a little way away but intend to visit far more regularly in the future.
