The Black Swan Hotel in Ryedale

We arrived without a booking on a rainy Sunday evening with two young children and the lovely staff squeezed us in for dinner was outstanding lovely place and people

We had a very nice evening meal here. The service was friendly and efficient and we had no complaints with the food. We would recommend eating here

We’d previously booked a meal for Sat 14 September as we’d had a long drive and the Black Sean was minutes away from where we were staying. Our table was booked for 6.45pm and we arrived a little early at 6.30pm but were promptly shown to our reserved table , ordered drinks which were served very quickly. Our little dog - unsettled by the journey - was not happy and husband decided to take him home explaining to the waitresses at the bar that his wife would order and he’d be back in a few minutes. When he returned nobody had come over to take our order but it was just on 6.45 so no worries. 10 minutes later husband went over to the bar to ask if our order could be given. The answer was “we have a party of 13 and we will get to you when we can” said in a very dismissive and offhand manner. Another 10/15 minutes later and I’d had enough waiting - it was now nearly 7pm and we’d been there for around 30 minutes in a not very crowded room. We went over to the bar behind which were several waitresses - to pay for our drinks and I told them the table was now free and we weren’t going to wait any longer - the girl taking the payment just said ok and as we turned to leave another woman (presuming a Manager) came flying across the room at us and said “I think you’re inpatient” and my husband replied “and I think you’re inefficient “ she began to argue whereupon husband said “I am not standing here arguing with you - we are leaving “ and we walked out. This was supposed to be a nice romantic birthday meal - the room itself was attractive and the menu looked okay. Surely knowing you had a relatively large party who needed to be catered for, the waitress When bringing our drinks could have mentioned that it would be sensible to order quickly otherwise there would be a bit of a wait . We’ve mentioned this unhappy ending to my birthday to several local residents who weren’t surprised. What a shame

Encouraged by the reviews & the online menu we booked for dinner on a Sunday night. Arrived to a warm welcome in a bright, smart place that was clearly busy. That didn't impact the service, which was just the right degree of attentiveness without being intrusive. Great atmosphere & you can see why most of the tables were turned over & /reserved. Good selection of well-kept ales & some good wines - recommend the Pathfinder & the Merlot. Mains were generously portioned & really tasty. Risotto, house salad, & haddock were all really good. Good choice of desserts & and I can recommend Afagato if you want something but not too much. Really enjoyed Surprised & disappointed by the lack of non-dairy alternatives & the waitress' response after checking of, "Sorry, but we only do real milk." Most of the other local cafes do & the CO-OP 100m away does too, so there's really no excuse. On reflection, we also weren't asked if anyone had any intolerance or allergies, which in 2024 is pretty unforgivable, not to mention irresponsible. Had a really good meal, despite which I'm not sure we'll risk a return visit, & sadly can only recommend with caution.

Sad to say, I found the experience of trying to dine here a big mistake. Nice staff lovely clean restaurant, but the wait in the half empty restaurant was to long for us to wait .Limited menu and expensive I think

We stayed at The Black Swan for 4 nights whilst sightseeing in the area. The owners (Jill and Phil) and staff are truly lovely, and super helpful. The building is very historic and the rooms have been beautifully renovated (but ask about steep stairs before booking if you're not a mountain goat!). Food and drink are great, and portions are generous. Parking is available in the courtyard at the rear. Without a doubt we would return if ever in the area again.

Our first time visiting here. The Chicken Schnitzel was ok, slightly overcooked, and the portion of potato salad was small. Nice salad though. Chilli con carne was also ok but small portion of chilli, with a large portion of rice! Took a while for our order to be taken. ££

Staying at The Black Swan hotel is like staying with good friends. From check-in until the time I left, Jill and her team could not have done more to make me feel welcome and comfortable. A special thank you to Beaj, the incredible man behind the busy bar. His friendly, open and helpful manner made me feel like one of the locals. My stay at The Black Swan, as a solo traveller, was very special and I will certainly be back.

Great food, great beer and great service. We visited twice during our week in Pickering and I had the chicken pie both times it was so good. The cheeseboard was excellebt too with four Yorkshire cheeses and plenty of crackers. Great value and highly recommended!

Ate here two evenings running; restaurant manager most accommodating indeed - as we hadn’t booked on each occasion. Impeccable service, clearly a very happy and well managed serving team. Delicious food, served piping hot. We were advised in advance there could be a bit of a wait on the Saturday as at full capacity. Hardly a ‘wait’ at all to be fair. Most welcoming and convivial place to dine or just have a drink, or perhaps two. For us, the dining experience a most positive one at The Black Swan, Pickering.

I am a regular at The Black Swan, but recently have been diagnosed with ceoliac disease. Jill and the staff could not have been more accommodating with my new diet, going above and beyond what I could have expected.

Staying in a cottage in Pickering, we decided to try the Black Swan for Sunday lunch and wasn't disappointed. Staff very welcoming and friendly. Food was excellent. Being dog owners we are usually sat in the scruffy part of the pub but this wasn't so at this establishment. Lovely surroundings and very clean. Will definitely be back.

Lovely little pub, luckily we had booked! Staff welcoming and warm atmosphere. Both of us had the beef Sunday lunch and sticky toffee pudding for dessert - both gorgeous. Would definitely recommend.

Lovely Sunday roast served by friendly staff. Good central location in Pickering and handy for the railway.

The owners of the establishment were very welcoming and the rooms were a very high standard. The breakfast was excellent beautifully presented, there were six of us and all had something different and all enjoyed the meal . It was a lovely stay and first class accommodation. We will certainly return hopefully in the near future to have another ride on the steam railway which in in walking distance of the hotel .

Excellent service , good friendly staff, good food and beer 3rd time here will be back again very enjoyable .

We visited as two couples to explore the local area and to visit Matthewmans/Bangers & Cash. We were very happy with our choice of accommodation ; the hotel is a lovely old traditional building but the rooms, which were spotlessly clean, have modern facilities so the best of both worlds. Pickering is a great base for exploring the Dales, the hotel is a short walk from the NYMR where you can get a steam train to Whitby. We had one evening meal and breakfast every day - food was excellent with lovely service. The owner Gill was so very helpful and accommodating, and we also have to mention Gemma who checked us in, helped with bags, worked the bar and reception with a smile. The hotel also has ample car parking, and an outdoor bar area. We will most definitely return - thank you for a wonderful stay.

We enjoyed our three-day stay at the Black Swan and admired the enterprise and had work of the proprietor. She served a memorable breakfast and generally made us very welcome.

We have just returned from a very relaxing stay at this lovely coaching inn where nothing is too much trouble for the staff. As far as we're concerned they just about have got it right. Each morning we were served a beautiful freshly cooked breakfast with lots of options available and on the 1 evening that we ate in the restaurant we had a dinner which was again cooked and presented beautifully using locally sourced ingredients. Outside there is a covered seating area. we especially appreciated the garden area As explained on the website there are quite a few stairs which may cause a problem to some but for those that can, this hotel is well worth a stay. Our room, which was no:7, was I think above the bar area so we could hear banging and talking from below, however the bar closed at 10pm after which all was quiet therefore this was not an issue. More importantly the room as with the hotel on a whole was spotlessly clean with a comfy seating area and plenty of variety in the courtesy box. Our en-suite shower room was perfectly adequate for our needs. Pickering itself is a picturesque market town, everyone being extremely friendly and welcoming. Its location was an ideal base for us visiting Whitby, Saltburn-by -the Sea, Thorton-le-dale, Scarborough and Malton. It goes quiet of an evening but for us after busy days it's not too much of a bad thing. T

We stayed here on dinner, B&B whilst attending a local car show, from start to finish the experience was excellent and put many 5 star hotels to shame. We arrived early and were able to park in the hotels car park which had ample off street parking. All staff members were professional pleasant and genuinely helpful. The room was immaculately clean with everything you could wish for, small fridge, lovely selection on teas and coffees, ample towels and toiletries. The evening was taken in the bar area as the dining room was full, always a good sign and as part of the dinner plan we had the choice of anything from the menu, everything was freshly cooked, good portions and well presented. Breakfast was similarly good. The attention to details throughout the hotel was great an especially liked the pocket watch attached to the room key. It’s the small things that make the difference and this place has its nailed. Plus to top it off they have their own brewery and service the beers in the bar on draft - excellent. I’ll definitely consider coming back to explore more of the area. There are also many other bars and restaurants in the area and it’s only a short walk from the steam railway station.

There wasn't a lot of choice on the menu and no specials board. We waited more than 25 minutes for someone to take our order. We left before they could. There was no communication from the servers who were simply standing chatting with each other. When we said we were leaving, they told us they were short staffed in the kitchen.
