Excellent pub, Spotlessly clean, happy to serve, friendly bar staff. Lovely beer garden where you can sit next to Pickering beck and watch the ducks swimming past. Good selection of drinks. Dog friendly (on a lead) water bowls always available and staff will happily fill them . Lovely when sunny outside ,with a covered area if it starts to rain. Would highly recommend any time of year. Edited..18/08/ 2024. All the above still applies, beer and service consistantly good. This weekend we were well and truly spoilt with an assortment of delicious home made pizza with or without an assortment of fries. We chose the margherita with dirty fries and the Hawaian with cheesy fries. All hot delicious and plentiful. Good prices too.

Best pub in Pickering. Great people. Great pints. The only issue is idiots who rock up for one night in Pickering with no idea on what they like to drink. Have zero manners or respect and think the world owes them something. We pay for a service. If you're rude I'd expect you to get told to swivel. You should be used to it by now

Visited on a sat evening with my husband. Beer nice but more expensive than all other pubs we had been to that evening. When we arrived there wasnt anyone behind the bar, we waited a few minutes & was about to leave when a lady came in to serve us, no service with a smile & not even a sorry for keeping you waiting. Plenty of people were inside so Found a seat at back wich was pleasent but only had the 1 & went back to bay horse

Went in Friday night and had a very similar experience to Gerald Munro who posted about 2 months ago. I bought 3 pints of one of my favourite beers Ossett White Rat for myself and two colleagues. The beer was well off, it was apparent from just the smell, but I still tasted it and confirmed what I expected. I returned it to the bar to the landlady who said she’d check in the cellar. She confirmed that there was still half a barrel left so there wasn’t a problem. She refused to taste it herself.I said that it was still off and she was very reluctant to do anything but after arguing eventually agreed to change all three for the Osset Yorkshire Blonde. I had a sample first to confirm it was ok which it was. The first ‘new’ pint was then passed to one of my colleagues and she asked him if it was ok. He, having seen her pull fresh pints and me approving it first, said it was ok. She then announced that she had switched the fresh pint (under the counter) with one of the originals so there was obviously nothing wrong in the first place! Very sneaky. We then had more unpleasant exchanges and I even said I would pay for two of the originals as I know how tough it is for the trade at the moment. She let me do this even though they were not consumed. In retrospect I should have not offered to do this and she got a better deal than she deserved with her attitude. It looks like it’s pot luck if you get decent beer here. The whole experience was very unpleasant.

The woman who frequently serves behind the bar has never been friendly towards us, she is with her regulars. We have visited many times, this time I had my 6 month old puppy with me, he is very wary of strangers. There was one man sitting at the table, no one else in the pub. My pup started barking at this man, I was trying to quieten him down. The woman behind the bar said" If your dog doesn't stop barking you will have to leave" twice I said, he will stop barking, but she continued to say we would have to leave. So we decided to go. Her attitude was quite surly, as we were leaving she came from behind the bar & approached me, I said her attitude was disgusting, the way she told us we would have to leave, it could have been said in a friendlier way. She didn't give a chance for my pup to settle. Obviously we won't visit again which she said" good riddance" nice! I did not yell at you, your body language when you approached me could have been intimidating but I certainly wasn't. Plus you escorted me off the premises with a final statement " good riddance" As for tying my pup up outside was just a remark, would not have done it. And you did say we would have to leave!

This is a nice pub with a lovely outdoor area. We were really enjoying our drinks but sadly due to a very loud squealing child we could not stand the noise. We did move to another table as we wanted another drink but we could still hear it. Hopefully when we visit Pickering again the outdoor area will be quieter.

Oddly miserable bar staff…. ill tempered & sadly unwelcoming… such a shame as we’d scouted this pub out & made a special trip…. Disappointed as such a beautiful building & great location In reply to owner….we visited this afternoon. Check back on the camera? 😂 “You cannot see why they were ill tempered?” Due to the rain & it not being busy…..? Our whole party thought they were rude & disinterested & sharp… & they looked miserable, no smiles, just irritated we were even there - thank you for your apology / concern - oh wait there wasn’t one…. Can understand the behaviour of the staff now - good luck reviewing your footage & all the best ✌🏼

Nice looking pub. Never been before. Ordered a pint of IPA (and I'm no stranger to what an IPA should taste like). First mouthful and it was obviously on the turn. Rank acidy off taste. Unfortunately, the lady behind the bar wouldn't accept it was off stating there's half a barrel left. Suggested I just didn't like IPA assuming I didn't know what I like or what a good pint of beer should taste like. It doesn't matter how much is left in the barrel, it tasted rank and is well on it's way. I asked for something else or a refund but she was reluctant to do so. Friendly local tasted it saying it was 'sharp' but he doesn't normally drink ale so wouldn't commit. She didn't drink it either so wouldn't taste it from the tap herself. Finally I said I drink all over Derbyshire and the UK and I know my beer. Also happened to be a CAMRA member. That was it, que derogatory comments about CAMRA and intimation that I'm some sort of knob. Anyway, she gave me my money back. What an awful unfriendly exchange. Nice pub, customers seemed friendly but I don't recommend the pub if you like your beer or want to be treated as a welcome customer.

Following a recent visit to Pickering, we ventured to try the Rose Inn Pub. After having a couple of drinks I made a visit to the ladies room and noticed the floor was waterlogged and the door to the ladies room was wedged open. I advised management of the issue whose first response was of a hostile nature. Soon after we left, on leaving a member of staff carrying a mop walked behind me but in front of my husband and then proceeded to shout to a member of the management berating me in a sarcastic manner. Not what I expect from a business who’s market is hospitality. Your response, is just what I expected, it’s not in my nature to be rude and in fact I find it difficult to speak up but in this instance I thought I should if only to make you aware that if someone was to slip your issues might be greater…

Re-the post about the toilets. I'm afraid that I have to contradict the landlady. I entered and left the toilets with the lady concerned and we were both aghast at (a) the door to a ladies' toilet being left ajar and (b) that the floor was awash and dirty and could ultimately have caused a serious accident at which point the owners would have been financially accountable. At NO point was the lady aggressive or confrontational. On the contrary, she leant over the counter to discuss the matter with the landlady quietly and as unobtrusively as possible. Her account of the discussion was as she described. At NO point was any endeavour made by the landlady to thank her for bringing this to her attention, even though this may have been the umpteenth occasion on which the state of the toilets had been brought to her attention. I am sorry to say that I could not in good conscience recommend a visit to the Rose Inn. Such a pity for such a welcoming, and extremely busy tourist season in Pickering.

Pleasant pub with large outdoor seating area that overlooks a local stream. Inside of the pub is nice and modern and the woman working behind the bar was very welcoming. Thoroughly enjoy the Coors on tap which will make me return in future. Pub seems to have a mix of locals and tourists stopping off which makes for a nice atmosphere. On our recent visit several locals sat on the table behind seemed quite drunk, however they were still very pleasant and not upsetting anyone. Unfortunately I can't comment on the food as we have only stopped off for drinks with the occasionally bag of crisps. Toilets were very well maintained and clean which is always a positive.

Called in for a couple of drinks. (It used to be a fantastic watering hole with food, and Sunday lunches 🤤 We would visit as adolescents, the great flood.) The pub now is modernised with plain decor, stone flooring, the toilets remain on the entrance, there is a scooter alongside the bar is a talking point. The old pool table from the back bar is no longer there, replaced with more tables. I'm not certain what the kitchen area now is or if it is extra seating. The place is clean and was relatively busy. Since it is one of the only remaining bars open in Pickering. They had a good selection of drinks available. Will be back.

We are walking some of the coast to coast and are staying at the Black Swan. We realised too late that the information we received from our travel agent about this restaurant was outdated. It used to be a creative dining experience, but now it is pretty terrible pub food . look elsewhere.

Been using Malton Spice for takeaway and eat in for the past 8/9 years and it has always been inconsistent to say the least. Sometimes the food is 4 or 5 stars, other times it can be 1 or 2. Not my usual choice but I recently ordered the chicken tikka masala and was very disappointed, it was too sweet and an artificial red colour, very bland and unauthentic. The garlic naan was dry and chewy. The problem in my opinion is that Malton Spice has for some time been the only Indian restaurant/takeaway in the whole of Malton and Norton. So they have no competition. There are several Chinese places, several pizza/kebab houses and fish n chip shops. The town needs another 1 or 2 Indian curry restaurant/takeaways.
