The best restaurants in South Hams South West

Always looking to support local and independent and let's face it, there are plenty in Totnes. There was just something about Zappa's that made us walk in. Glad we did. They're dog friendly so there's a bonus. I didn't clock that they were vegan as I ordered a salad with a samosa and a spinach bhaji. Got to tell you that every item on my plate was bursting with flavour - it's a riot for your taste buds. And the coffee! Probably the best latte I've had in the past year. Seriously, mug-huggingly good. Delicious. I'm so glad I ate here today. Seriously good food.

We had supper at the recently opened Circa in lovely Totnes last night… brilliant in every way… they encourage you to have sharing plates which works well… the food is superb and save room for the unusual fudge desert… all the staff were great!…I highly recommend this great new addition to Totnes!

Our first visit and we were not too sure when we entered as it looked very cramped and dark. However, staff were both friendly and helpful and although we had to wait a while it was worth it as the food was outstanding! My bacon, brie and cranberry toastie on thick granary bread was just the best ever. Crammed full of tasty bacon; covered with melted brie and just enough cranberry to offset the creaminess. It came with a huge dressed salad and coleslaw. As I struggled to finish the toastie I was very reluctant to leave the untouched salad and coleslaw but thankfully a takeaway box was provided and I enjoyed the salad with some tuna for my tea. So, two meals for the price of one! We will definitely go back. Thank you.

We ordered a pasty and also a jacket potato to eat inside, unfortunately the pasty of choice had sold out (this was early in the day), so we selected another one, this pasty was fine and tasty. We were disappointed with the jacket potato though, which was supposed to come with salad and coleslaw, the portion size was very small and just a spoonful of coleslaw....had this have been delivered with the plate looking more full, then it may have scored higher. Also disappointing was the dirty/wet table that we had to sit at, we understand there is a high turnover of customers here, but more should be done to keep on top of this, even on on busy days.

Dropped in for a quick lunch. Expensive for what it is. For example a small piece of frittata and a very small salad for nine ounces odd. Went home and had toast to supplement. Disappointing as had heard good things.

Popped into the cafe a couple of weeks ago. Ordered the "Risotto." Sadly, the most bland food I'd ever eaten. I was quite shocked. It looked OK but seemed to have been cooked in water, not stock. Not even tasted along the way, I assume, unless the chef has a broken palette. We were anxious because we'd booked for a Mother's Day lunch in the restaurant. Also, that too lacked any flavour or seasoning. The whole chicken ( whilst I didn't expect a 3KG bird on my plate) was questionably ethical in its serving. I would suggest an 8 week chick measuring no more than 8cm and as many grams. Couldn't ascertain any flavour as I couldn't get anything off the cartilage. The staff and grounds are lovely. A nice place for a coffee and a slice. Nothing else.

Stopped here while waiting for a bus. Had a lovely cappuccino and sausage roll. It was reasonably priced and the staff were nice too

We can’t pass the place on a market day without having a burger. The house sauce is to die for and very filling too! The two ladies (mother and daughter) who run it are great!) and the coffee is lovely too. What more could you want.

Amazing coffee and flapjack as a lovely snack. Fabulous view over the salcombe estuary. Will most definitely be returning :)

The coffee is great and the best prices around for the quality and size. The light bites were delicious, again very well priced for what you get. Would definitely recommend if you aren’t too fussed about coffee with a view or environment or brand name.

A wonderful tuna mayo sandwich with no salad. And the staff were wonderful. You could feel the love in every bite. Tasting that sandwich was orgasmic. Very much recommended,

The way the owner spoke to the customers sat next to us recently was awful and we were made feel somewhat uncomfortable. This ruined our experience which was a shame. Could have been dealt with very differently. Not nice to witness. Food was good when it arrived. Upstairs/downstairs menu is confused.

I don’t often leave negative reviews but feel in this instance it’s worth voicing. Lunchtime experience, ordered the Reuben sandwich with a description on the menu promising “fresh sourdough bread, stacks of pastrami and paprika season fries” - it was none of that, instead was a cheap brakes style bun (these are bought in frozen), barely any pastrami and some plain fries. Everything was done on the cheap and didn’t match the description on the menu. Far from what you’d expect from a “deli” and just a rip off. Service was unfriendly - not interested in feedback and the waitress clearly didn’t want to be working.

I'm a Coeliac and they catered for me with no issues. The haddock was fantastic. Highly recommend!

I visit the UK yearly from Australia to visit family and every year I visit the Ship inn as from experience it has been great. I won't be back after my last visit however. Not sure if it is under new management but will give it a miss next year. On arrival the outside area was packed and no tables available which was fine and we could wait. I went to the bar and was told by the barman that it is table service. I said I hadn't got a table and was eventually served. The barman was obviously under pressure with orders so was abrupt when speaking to me. I managed to secure a table and we sat down with our drinks. I had ordered a side of chips which was on the small side of what you usually expect from a side of chips. We weren't eating but we're asked by atleast three different staff if we wanted to order food, it felt like we were expected to order food instead of just having a drink. We stayed for one round of drinks and left. Won't be back.
