Pizza was amazing, some nice ales too. We were up in the pizza tapas bar area staff young and not very attentive, waited around longer than we should for a quiet time in December. Nice decor and they play sport!

My wife and I had a lunchtime drink and snack here yesterday, the 21st May. We chose from the excellent variety of draft beers and cider then sat on the balcony. We had an uninterrupted view of the sea. Unfortunately the place was full when we returned for an evening meal. That was no surprise because this establishment is so good it is incredibly popular. Highly recommended. Furthermore full service is now offered at the table so I have given 5 stars, contrary to my review below. Four of us ate here yesterday lunchtime. We sat outside in glorious sunshine looking out to sea. The location is simply wonderful. We eat here fairly often and have also had many takeaways. The food is consistently excellent. On this occasion we all shared one sharing seafood platter with some fries. There was plenty of food for all of us to enjoy a superb lunch. The only downside to my experience of this excellent establishment is that you have to go to the bar to order everything. We don’t go anywhere else where we have to do this. So I have taken a star off my rating, which is a shame. We had the Wednesday Pie Deal here yesterday (25.9.24). The pies, one fish and one steak and mushroom were absolutely stunning with the best chips ever. The Cove is simply a wonderful feature of Hope Cove. Long may they continue.

We were welcomed by the very friendly Sarah as we passed by and decided to have lunch. We had a fantastic Steak and mushroom pie and a Ratatouille bake which were both plentiful and delicious. Top notch home cooked food combined with a great choice of beers and wines. We’d eaten here before but thought it was only burgers and pizza ( which are really good ) so it was great to have further options . Great service great food 👍🏻

We came here three times whilst staying in Thurlestone for the week. No.1 pizza is really tasty, and a good size to share between 2. The patatas bravas were yummy and nachos seemed to never end! We also had veggie fajitas and dexter burger which is two beef patties. The triple cooked chips downstairs are great too. We really thought this place was good food and good value for money with very friendly service. I cannot say the same for The Beachhouse!

We were offered a table by what i can only assume was the manageress. She wasn't very friendly and verged on being downright offish! We were squished into an uncomfortable corner and acknowledged by our pleasant waitress. Food was way below average (my bread was stale, crab was poor quality pasteurised rubbish, salad uninspiring) and certainly overpriced! Drinks were ok. Ambiance wasn't very nice as it was very noisy and everyone was crammed in like sardines! We certainly won't be returning!

As there aren’t too many places to eat in Hope Cove, The Cove is an obvious place to go to eat. No reservations so just turn up. It is an assumption that you know ‘how it is done’ here. We were taken upstairs but then just left to find a table. Pizzas were delivered with not a word and no cutlery but then found a pizza wheel hiding under the pizza. You get the feeling they have had a busy summer (no doubt) and were just going through the motions. Pizzas were tasty but at £18 and £16 a piece, would say they are very pricey!

Hope Cove was busy on the Friday before the bank holiday weekend but we had no problem turning up without a booking and getting a table out front. Our orders of Dexter blue burger, beef fajitas, fish & chips and a posh fish finger club sandwich, along with #Lou by Peyrassol rosé, did take a while to arrive but we were chilled, soaked up the afternoon sun while we people-watched and not in a hurry. When the food did come everyone agreed we had found somewhere we'd return to if we were in the area again, though it's quite a trek from our Torquay base. Everything looked and tasted delicious, and the portions were generous, served with mountains of fries, and vast baths of very tasty mushy peas and curry sauce,

Have been coming to Hope Cove for a while now, in fact every summer for a week or two. The Cove is a wonderful place, attentive staff, great food and drink & a lovely atmosphere for all the family. We also watched the final of the Euro’s on the outside balcony, which was a great night apart from the result! Would recommend to anyone visiting Hope Cove…

We have been visiting Hope Cove for the past 13 years . It is a place of great sentiment to us as a family .We have recommend The Cove to others that have visited over the past few years . The food was delicious ONCE it had arrived . We came into the restaurant this evening and were under no illusion that the wait may be a while . However over an hour and 30 mins of waiting and the people that had been served after us received their meals first ( even ordered practically the same ) I asked to speak to the manager . The waitress said that due to the bank holiday they were very busy , it’s Thursday bank holiday was Monday . I appreciate it’s still August and school holidays but to blame the BH .. really . The manager that came over was by far the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Not interested at all , arguing back, saying the pub next door had stopped serving food due to the volume of customers that evening . Wasn't really bothered about next door I had chosen to eat here. The customers on the other table even agreed with my argument that she gave no explanation or apology . We did get a slight refund but that was only after I asked for it. Not sure I’d recommend or visit again after this evening. . Shame

Awful place! Went for food but as it wasn’t 12noon they weren’t serving so suggested we could have a drink and wait. We agreed we’d have a coffee. The girls serving the coffee didn’t even speak other than to moodily ask us what we wanted. I asked for a hot chocolate and my husband a coffee. The girl picked up a cup for the hot chocolate but it was dirty so instead of getting another cup of the same size she decided to give me my hot chocolate in a tea cup half the size! For £4. The hot chocolate she couldn’t get in my cup she left on the side. She put our drinks on the counter didn’t make eye contact and returned to texting on her phone. We took a seat on one of the benches the table was filthy as were the others! The staff seemed more content in standing around fiddling with their hair or looking at their phones!! Very poor service!!

Just so Very poor! £10 for a dirty glassed pint which for London is punchy, but for this dead end pub it’s just desperate. Shelley Ann needs to adopt a better attitude to this venture before it’s too late, the sub-spoons-standard food is tortuous, priced for another county and with deeper pockets. Noted were the surly bar staff to accompany your sticky filthy table, “local” produce includes the Kingsbridge Morrisons and Malborough Asda along with vMicrowaved food that should be fried, (patatas bravas/ padron peppers) pizzas with packet pepperami and crab croquettas so spicy to mask the definite flavour of rotten shellfish. Captain Birdseye drops anchor in Hopeless Cove! We were a group of six looking for lunch, lured in by the promise of fresh, locally sourced seafood after a morning on the beach. Sadly, despite being within spitting distance of the sea the fish was anything but fresh. We were made to seat ourselves on a sullied table with remnants of mushy peas, tartare sauce and other punters’ disappointing meals strewn across it. In spite of the above, we thought ho-hum, the food would leave us satisfied after our morning activities. Little did we know how wrong we were. We waited long enough to make Rip Van Winkle’s nap look like a power nap, and yet our food still did not come. With the amount of time we waited, I genuinely believe we could have solved world peace and hunger - hunger being the operative word. We were starving. When our food finally arrived remarkably our disappointment was only intensified. It shall join the mysteries of Stone Henge, Amelia Airheart and the Loch Ness monster in how The “Hopeless” Cove managed to take so long in rustling up something that Chef Mike (the microwave) had clearly made. Stay away.

It’s actually great to find a place like this in such an amazing spot where you don’t actually need to book months in advance (they don’t take bookings) and the prices do not mean you have to remortgage the house! It was a Friday night over the Easter Break and so yes we had to wait half an hour for table but the Manager was really fair and accommodating, giving us an amazing window view. We had a drink whilst we waited - worse things happen (near) the sea! Choice of food for a family was great. Juicy burgers. Amazing fish tacos. The Fajitas looked amazing. Service was spot on! Appalling service - we couldn't believe it. I dont often go out of my way to leave negative reviews unless its blown my mind, which in this case our experience has. We turned up (a family of 7 adults and 1 baby) looking forward to some pizza and asked for a table for 7. We were told to wait upstairs at the bar. After waiting for 15 mins and being taken downstairs to a table that barely fit us all in the corner where your head knocks the picture frames and you can barely move, we asked for the Pizza menu before being told they only serve Pizza upstairs. We wish we were informed of this 15 minutes ago when we arrived. One of our family is gluten intolerant so ideally 6 of us wanted pizza and one wanted food from the "downstairs" menu. We were told this isnt possible. We asked if we can carry the pizza/other food up/downstairs ourselves after ordering and again told no we cannot (out of principal more than anything else). If we wanted to have pizza, we would have to wait upstairs for 2 tables to become free, and split the family up to eat in 2 groups. Firstly, we thought the fact upstairs food cant go down and downstairs food cant go up is ridiculous, even if we offered to carry it ourselves. Secondly, more annoyingly is no one informed us of this upon our arrival. After we bit the bullet and decided to eat downstairs to accommodate the gluten-free member of our family, we were told we must pay up-front before all the food arrives ?! I asked if this is normal process for everyone to which we were told yes (we did not believe this). We bit the bullet again and paid upfront. When ordering, we asked if we can swap the salad in one of the mains with a few chips, we were told yes. When the bill came for us to pay up-front, theyd added an extra £4.99 charge for these additional chips which they said we could swap for salad instead. This then took another 5-10mins trying to resolve before someone who thinks they're a competent manager came over and said the waitress was wrong for saying we could swap, but agreed to "throw in a few chips" anyway. We were also told we have 2 options, "pay upfront or leave". This was also quite shocking and strange as we'd already agreed (begrudgingly) to pay upfront 10 mins ago, so clearly there is very poor communication going on behind the scenes amongst staff. When the food all finally arrived, it was ok. Not great, not bad, ok. As we were finishing our meals, i spotted the table infront of us paying for their bill as they were finishing up and leaving, so clearly this isnt normal process to pay upfront, and they clearly didnt trust us and thought 7 adults would do a runner with a baby and a pram or something.... Worst customer service, attitude and communication I've experienced in a restaurant in years, maybe ever. Never going there again. Going by other reviews, it seems ownership has changed and people seem to have similar complaints: Stupid upstairs pizza policy Poor communication Rude management.

Firstly the food was fine but very odd service, I get you pay before you get your food in McDonalds, also in a bar you may leave a card behind the bar for a tab, but it’s odd to be sitting in a restaurant give your order and then be asked to pay, then I assume pay again should you want dessert or tip etc. it’s also ridiculously packed in, you eat with other people. But the food was ok, unlike the beer that had gone sour.

Terrible dining experience from start to finish. What a shame as Hope Cove is such a beautiful place. Within five minutes of sitting down and ordering drinks, we had to give the waiter our debit card as a ‘deposit’. I was hesitant but hungry so didn’t argue. Just a bit strange I thought. We then ordered food. Someone in our group wanted a pizza and another wanted a sandwich, however we were told that you are only allowed to have a pizza if you sit upstairs and a sandwich if you sit downstairs. What? I have never in all my years of dining out heard of segregating customers before based on their food choice. Absolutely ridiculous. We bit our tongue and all chose something from the same menu so that we could sit together and not be separated. We were out for a birthday meal may I add. I didn’t think it could get worse, and tried to keep positive, but the food was just as bad as the service I’m afraid - and extortionate! The food took about 40 minutes to arrive and what arrived was a dry, hard to chew pizza with a few toppings chucked on top. I’m sorry to moan, and don’t do it normally, but I am still shocked at how bad this was.

Never normally review but we ordered £150 of pizza from the takeaway upstairs and then grabbed a pint and sat on the picnic tables out the front (of the 6 tables, 5 were empty). We were immediately asked what we were doing and were told we were fine to sit there, but the moment we finished our drinks were told they needed the table for paying customers. The lady who spoke to us was rude, and what annoyed us the most was when we moved and continued to wait for our food no one sat on the table anyway - and there were still 2 other empty tables! The pizzas were ultimately average at best and used to be much nicer (and cheaper). Will not be rushing back anytime soon.

Arrived on a beautiful Saturday evening, place was very busy, we sat up on the terrace which was lovely apart from some rowdy/one too many pints guests who slightly tainted the beautiful scenery/atmosphere. Pizza took over an hour to come but the bar staff were fantastic and accommodating to our change of order to take away. Pizza were great and would go again but probably not during a sunny evening for food.

I have been to the Cove 4 times in the last 2 months. Their service is fantastic, quick to receive you, serve you and deliver for food and drinks. The food is superb also.

The pizzas are really good but the set up under the new ownership is rediculous, we are local and would love to eat the pizzas more often. The lady that I believe owns it is so rude and there are so many t&C's as to where you can eat and drink, I wanted a pizza with my girlfriend but I could only eat it where the football was being played and there were no tables, I wasn't allowed to eat anywhere else even though downstairs was empty you are only allowed to eat off the menu NO PIZZA, I got told to wait outside for my takeaway pizza but wasn't allowed to sit on the bench with my drink and got told to wait across the road. So we ended up eating pizza in the car we definitely won't be back

Good food, ate downstairs and enjoyed the burgers and fajitas which were good, too many accompaniments with the fajitas which weren’t all needed and therefore wasteful. Young staff who were inexperienced but tried hard. Credit card asked for to keep behind the bar, we understand...

The food was fab - we ate burgers, tacos and a tiger prawn special. It was odd that they take your bank card at the start 'for a tab'. Maybe it's because people do a runner but this made me uncomfortable and I asked for...

Man behind the bar on the second floor of the cafe is so grumpy sat on his phone the entire time. One of the younger girls was very sweet but most acted like they wanted to be somewhere else. Pizza is nothing special.

I have to echo what the other reviews have said. The staff in the upstairs area are incredibly rude and lack any customer service skills, especially the girl working behind the pizza counter. Swearing in front of our children, arguing with customers. We can’t comment...

I’m still in shock 12 hours later after visiting this place, I will seek for legal advice on this situation, there is no way I will accept another family with kids to be treated the same way me and my kids we have been treated today. EXTREMELY POOR and DISAPPOINTING attitude offered, the MANAGER/OWNER in charge, probably the owner, that’s what I understand from one of the stuff young lady, she’s offered us one of the most low customer service we have seen ever in our life. After enjoying our stay in Hope Cove, It is such a shame to close my holiday having lunch at this place. The front entrance shows 2 menus for pizza and other bar food, please see photos attached to avoid ambiguity around my review. We have asked if we can sit on the upper terrace and they said that is only for pizza. Our group formed by 5 adults and 4 kids decided to sit downstairs on the street level terrace on some pub benches, then instantly one of the stuff members has asked to leave a Bank Card at the till before we order the food really that’s necessary in 2023 in such lovely little village? That was happen all the time we eat in there, we eat twice in the past 3 days. Then we have ordered the food and drinks, then I have said that my son, 5 years old kid, would like to have a pizza, then I have been told that I will need to go upstairs on the upper terrace for a pizza, because we are not allowed pizza on the lower terrace, I did asked nicely and polite to have an exception, he’s a 5 years old boy and is very hard to explain to a hungry kid that the food chosen is not available and he will need to be away from his friends to eat separate, then I did ordered one pizza for take away ignoring such absurdity imposed. The bar manager/owner said that I need to leave the table with my son if my son will eat pizza on that table, I did explained nicely and polite that is not fair for my son to see the other eating in front of him and him to be left with no food, or second option, me with him will need to leave the table to eat on a street bench on the other side of the road. Also I have explained to this lady that we don’t do this on purpose or to upset anyone, all of us we have ordered the food from the specified menu and is only one pizza for a 5 years old kid, also I have asked her how she will feel if she will be in my position with a group of friends and her son hungry, I did explained that in the past 2 days we have been in the same place twice, my son did eat once the burger from kids menu, he eat once the fish from kids menu, now he opted for a pizza just to have diversity in his alimentation. The stubborn lady asked to decide what I want to do in front of my group of people and in front of my kids if I want to order for my son what’s in the menu because the pizza will not be allowed on the table, and the pizza ordered by me upstairs for take away will be cancelled or delayed to be kept warmed and handled to me for only when we will leave the table. There is no way in 2023 for a parent and his kids to receive such treatment and attitude on such low communication level, I did read the other negative reviews on Google and Tripadvisor and all make sense.

Pizzas at The Cove used to be a real treat. Delicious, oozy and in a great atmosphere. What's happened? They're terrible now, go to the Co-op in Malborough and buy them there instead! Sad.

Great Sunday Roast in a lovely pub with good service. Popped in for a pint last week which led to a reservation for lunch today, everything was excellent, highly recommended. Roast was super tasty. Had the Rum Baba for dessert which had a kick but lovely nonetheless.

Christmas lunch for 12 of us. Pre ordered from a balanced and varied seasonal menu that included fish and vegetarian options. Excellent value and we were very well looked after. Exceptional selection of well cooked Vegetables, recipe for the red cabbage please . Some of us were disappointed that we didn't have room for a desert ! This is a family owned proper pub with helpful competent staff. Parking right opposite but payment by card challenged some of us oldies.
