A genuine welcome, excellent service and high quality seafood, this proper pub has all the charm and welcome that makes me proud to be of Devonian blood. We were visitors but were made to feel welcome, our dog was well catered for too. Good beers, coffee, and the cleanest pub toilets we have ever experienced. A long way from home but we will be back in summer. Fantastic location too. Just don't park where the tide might come to.

Absolutely fantastic experience at The Ship Inn in Noss Mayo! From the moment we walked in, the warm, welcoming atmosphere made us feel right at home. The staff were friendly and attentive, offering top-notch service throughout our visit. The food was exceptional—every dish was bursting with flavor, beautifully presented, and made with the freshest local ingredients. The seafood, in particular, was a standout, perfectly prepared and truly a treat for the taste buds. The setting is stunning, with picturesque views of the harbor that just added to the whole experience. Whether you're there for a casual meal or a special occasion, The Ship Inn delivers on every front. Highly recommend it to anyone visiting Noss Mayo—this place is a true gem!

Having been here in May and waited nearly two hours for our food we weren’t in any rush to return, however thank goodness we did as the new owners are running a slick service now. Friendly managers and team. Delicious food especially the mussels starter and all the desserts. Josh the manager pinned my daughter’s colouring to the board which made her day too. A friendly cosy pub for foodies, thanks for making our last night of our mini break perfect. We will def be back, maybe even tomorrow for lunch!

Well this was our second visit to this pub. After a really dreadful experience last year my partner and I thought we'd give it another go as Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrers are our favourite places in Devon to visit. Well I can now say with 100% confidence that the new mangers have really turned the place around. The menu is perfect with a great range for everyone, the service top class, the food great and the whole atmosphere far better, what a turnaround! We'll definitely be returning and will recommend to our friends. Five stars!

For the first time in far too long, I can honestly say that pur meals this evening were excellent. When Youngs first took over from Charlie and Lisa, to say it was a disaster would be an understatement. I have been there to eat about 4 times in the last year, and on each occasion it's been "okay" at best BUT going again tonight with Josh and Lottie at the helm, the Ship is well and truly back on course. Everyone was full of compliments about their meals and I couldn't find fault at all. Perhaps the drinks took a little while longer than they should have to find their way to the table, but it wasn't excessive, and it's a bit of a stretch to call it a criticism. Service - very good Atmosphere - very good Food quality - excellent Value for money - very good. So good to see you back old friend, long may it continue

We visited the Under New Management Ship Inn late lunchtime on a sunny Saturday, going to the outside area, which has great views of the inlet, and one of the staff helped our group of five secure a table and then didn’t mind when we switched to another table more in the sunshine when that became vacant. He came back once our food had arrived to make sure we were happy, which we were, and we got into a conversation about the pub having new management. Being first-time visitors, we didn't have any comparison to what preceded, but our experience was very positive. The food was good and all the staff we came into contact with were great. One floor up in a large room a children's party was underway with about 30 children and that all seemed to be going very well as its own self-contained event and just added positively to the general atmosphere. We would certainly visit again.

We are so thrilled to have The Ship Inn at Noss Mayo back to its best! The new managers, Josh and Lottie, have truly transformed the place. They’re absolutely lovely, and their warmth really shines through the staff, who are always smiling and eager to help. Nothing is ever too much trouble! The addition of the colouring-in table for kids is a brilliant touch—it keeps the little ones entertained while we relax. The outdoor areas are looking cleaner and more inviting than ever. The food has definitely stepped up a level, especially with the new specials that never fail to impress. The introduction of table service is a fantastic idea, and for such a young team, they are doing an incredible job. We were a large group visiting for dinner. We had a table upstairs, where it was quite dark - some of us resorted to phone cameras to read the menu! Once seated there was a lengthy wait until we could order, then another long wait for food. The food was not as it was with the previous owners - excessive salt on the Cumberland sausages, no detectable crab in the crab linguine. Other than that, it is still a special place to visit. A cold beer on the deck in the sun is still great. Just wait until they improve the food before booking dinner.

A return visit, but the first since the change of ownership. We arrived before midday, not having a reservation, but were seated easily on a quiet day. There were only two staff and service was a little slow, but nothing to moan about. I'm not sure what the reason was; the first sunny day for quite a while, the first weekday of the half term holiday, but suddenly the place was inundated and the staff, who obviously weren't expecting it, just couldn't cope - there was queue out of the door! Everything unravelled from there. Luckily our order had been taken and our food arrived in good time, but another drink or a cup of coffee would have taken forever, so I paid and left! The food was OK, but not what it used to be. The place remains very much the same, but taken as a whole the experience was not as good as usual. I'll go back again, just to see if this was a one off, but I do think Young's Brewery needs to be more on the ball here. I should add, the staff were both very friendly and helpful, but were just overwhelmed.

Fabulous location, dog friendly pub. Very welcoming staff, the pub itself has a great lively feel even though I’m here off season so it was quiet, apparently, felt pretty lively to me. I had one of the best Caesar salads I’ve ever eaten. It actually had chicken, anchovies (fresh which I’ve never eaten before and want more thank you) Parmesan and dressing you could taste. Yummy! Lemon posset, lemmomey and creamy with a home made biscuit which was almost as good as my Scottish mother in laws! I’ll be going back during the week perhaps to try the fresh anchovies on the menu.

Beautiful location but each time I visit I find the food really lacking! Great pub to stop and have a drink and the setting itself is gorgeous so I would certainly recommend on that basis. Staff are friendly too. I can’t give the food a good rating though as I have visited several times and every time I’ve left disappointed. The food is edible certainly but the menu seems uninspired and the food itself just lacks and could be done better at home. Shame really as great food would really elevate this place. Oh and the food prices (while I appreciate Noss Mayo is a more expensive area) do not match the quality of what you’re being served sadly, far too expensive!

Charming location. I liked our server. He did his best to take our order, then came back to tell us there was no sourdough or chutney. Really? Made changes to our order. Our food took forever, and my ham sandwich was missing tomatoes and was not great for $11 quid. At that price, they could have two slices of ham instead of one and maybe some stone ground mustard. Too much to ask for? At L$78 for lunch, I would like to enjoy my lunch on holiday. I recommend you try the Swan Inn until the Ship Inn gets their act to gather and can make a ham sandwich worth $11 quid.

The Ham Was Good. Unfortunately, the rest of our experience left a lot to be desired. The lunch menu was difficult to read as the print was so small it was the opposite of user friendly. Once deciphered near the window as the only meaningful source of light, we asked for cheese and tomato chutney sandwiches on sourdough bread. The only bread available we were informed. Also ordered a ham and tomato sandwich with mayo, no butter. 10 mins later, we were told there's no tomato chutney. Bring pickle we suggested. They had none. After much discussion about the lack of simple sandwich options, I swapped to a ploughman's lunch and my friend ordered a pizza, doubling the price of our initial order. Not cheap. The pizza came as described, the ploughmans came with brown bread and the other sandwiches on plain white. There's no sour bread we were told. The ham sandwich arrived with butter and no tomato and the cheese and tomato was sent back as my other friend wanted sourdough as ordered and eventually ended up with brown something. The Ploughman's was bland and uninspiring. None of the food matched the price point in taste or value. The young man who was new at his job, tried his best, but management was ungracious about our complaints. We didn't pay for the ham (by itself except butter) sandwich. However as we paid our bill, the woman who processed our payment said, "I hope you find somewhere better next time." Indeed we shall. There is a lot to learn here about customer service and perhaps some on-the-fly-training for when you run out of tomato chutney!

The Basil Fawlty school of customer service would be proud of you! We brought our American guests to lunch at the Ship today, having had excellent eating/ drinking experiences here previously at it's delightful location. We battled through: Long delay in serving food Told only sourdough bread available; No chutney or substitute available advised after ordering; BUT Served WHITE bread (guest doesn't eat this anyway) and stale brown bread stuff not resembling sourdough! Butter used when asked for no butter Sausage had no flavour. The caramelised onion turned up uninvited too! Apology offered on complaint. We wouldn't have been eating desserts or having coffees so a conciliatory offer of this was declined. The not inconsiderable bill was not reduced in any way, until challenged, then reduced by the cost of 1 sandwich serving. When the issue of the butter was mentioned, we were told they might have to dismiss the waiter if he hasn't recorded the order properly ( I asked if the chef would be dismissed if it was down to them!) ... we should not be a party to those comments or decisions! Just before we left, the Lady who was managing said I hope you'll find somewhere better next time!...Just extraordinarily poor experience and customer service. If you could take on board the basic principle of being able to put yourself in the customer's situation/mindset, you could turn your business around! I doubt this will happen! Chutney is a preserve... should be loads in the larder, worst case scenario - get a jar from the corner shop! Have some half cooked bread in the freezer...freshly bake in an emergency.... not rocket science! If a customer isn't happy... think how would I feel if I was them, and what can I do to meaningfully make things up to them. Think about what you say in front of customers.... some conversations should only be had amongst staff!! Do whatever you can to get the customer back in.. A dissatisfied customer will tell the story tenfold, a satisfied customer to one other! You can so easily be the author of your own demise! Read report below if you have the inclination! A lovely young waiter, new to the job, served us...no problem with him. We were informed there was only sourdough bread We ordered 3 x cheddar and tomato chutney sandwiches and a ploughman's. No butter on 2 of the sandwiches. We were told there was no tomato chutney only caramelised onion (not as chutney). So changed order to 2x sandwiches the ploughman's and a pizza. No caramelised onion, no butter. What came was WHITE Bread on the sandwiches (we would have preferred brown, but told there was only sourdough)...on 2 sandwiches and the brown bready type offering on the ploughman's tasted stale. The caramelised onion turned up uninvited. Th pizza was pretty good though!

It does pain me slightly to leave a 1-star review, but on our recent visit we were spoken to rudely by the staff, made to feel as if customers were an inconvenience, and eventually had to leave without any food other very dry pieces of stale cake. The Ship has been a family favourite for years, a top choice for any meals out. Sadly since the sale, Youngs brewery haven’t got to grips with the size of the pub yet. We’ve experienced one lunch with a very mediocre sandwich which was worse than something knocked up at home, and on giving it another try this week, we arrived to be told the kitchen were “having a break” and not taking any orders. They “might” take orders again in 25 minutes, but equally “they might not”. This was in the middle of the 12-2 lunch slot, the inside of the pub was totally empty but it was busy outside due to the sunny weather. So we duly ordered some drinks and sat and waited. In the meantime, a drinks order that was wrong was brought out. On pointing out that it was wrong the lady snappily questioned it before huffing “well I’ll have to go and make another one now!!”. On emerging again, we tried to offer some sympathy and ask if they had staff off sick. Her response and attitude was rude and unpleasant and essentially along the lines that customers were a massive inconvenience and who did they think they were all walking in expecting food. We finished up the awkward exchange by asking if the kitchen were now taking orders (30 minutes had gone by) to get a snappy response “no they’re not” before she walked off. At that point, all of us decided that was sadly the last time we’d visit The Ship. A sad end to what was a really great pub. I hope the brewery take note of what seem to be a slew of negative reviews and improve their approach to match the size and covers of the venue otherwise I can’t see it surviving as a business when it’s not even at full capacity with the summer holidays.

An excellent end of walk pub lunch eaten on the beautiful terrace. Good fish (plaice) and equally good fish cakes. Definitely somewhere to return to.

Website displays “breakfast served daily” arrived during breakfast hours to be told the only food available is cake or half a sausage roll at £5! Only one person serving and the wait for a coffee was long. Customers presence seemed an inconvenience and staff audibly complaining about how many coffees they were required to make today Unrecognisable on all accounts now compared to pre sale. Such a shame to see

Firstly, you can't knock the view, the pubs location is fantastic. But at £40 for a steak (as of 2024), you feel you could be offered some salad. Restaurants in town must be booked early, but the other 2 local pubs serve better drinks and are far more welcoming.

Superb service, and reassurance that I could eat safely at this gem of a pub! Having severe food allergies, both Chris and the Chef were absolutely wonderful in handling every aspect of my needs, even asking if I had my EpiPen with me! Very impressive. Fabulous food, unique setting, combined with the utmost of care. Big thanks!

Disappointing. Since the pub was sold last year the attentive, smart staff are gone. Food is very difficult to order due to 'kitchen backlog'. Seating and view ok still.

The food was absolutely exceptional and we couldn’t fault a moment. The sausages and the hake are both wonderful dishes!! The blonde woman (with short-ish hair) was also a delight to be served by. We will definitely be returning and have already recommended it to the owners of where we stayed so they could recommend The Ship to other visitors. Great value for money!

Sadly this place does not live up to expectations. Also, have previously written a review, been asked by manager in their public reply to email them personally, and then no reply to this at all. Just a PR stunt to make them look like they care which they clearly don't. This place won't last much longer showing by their mediocre reviews of late.

Lovely surroundings....food was okay but thought quite expensive for quality. Could have been that particular evening...but found service quite slow....

Lovely location but staff were pretty rude. We were told when we arrived that we could have a table / order food (although understandably had a limited menu because they were busy). But then when we went to order at the bar they laughed in our face and said that the waitresses shouldn’t have even given us a table because they were too busy to serve any food. I understand that sometimes it’s not possible to serve food, but it didn’t warrant being rude. I’ve been to the Swan Inn which is far more friendly and has a great menu, so if I had a choice would go there instead!

My husband and I had dinner on a Saturday night over the May bank holiday weekend. We booked a table as it can be busy and we had a lovely table by the window with views of the water. We were welcomed the second we walked in the door and the serving team were excellent. The food was delicious, especially if you enjoy fish, although there are plenty of other options available. The food, the service and the atmosphere was amazing. If we are back in the area we will definitely go back!

We booked the glass house private room for my girlfriends birthday, brilliant experience in a beautiful venue and location on the harbour side in Noss Mayo, and great that we could Bluetooth to the speakers in the room! Incredible sea food, and great service (from Chloe and the other 2 girls serving us), all the staff are so friendly. Thank you guys, will definitely be back again soon!

Lovely staff, mostly very good service - it was a very busy and sunny Sunday lunchtime - but slightly disappointing food, especially the vegetarian nut roast; I don't think that any nuts were involved in the recipe and it didn't taste great. Carnivore companions thought that their meals were average at best too. Obviously, the setting is wonderful and nobody rushed us when we moved outside to enjoy drinks in the sunshine.

I've visited here twice now when I've been on holiday in Devon and I love it. The food is absolutely superb, I thoroughly enjoyed the 7 course tasting menu, and as a vegetarian, I felt there was such a lot of thought put into the dishes I was served. There are so many places I've visited where the vegetarian options are barely considered with just one standard option with zero thought to it. Jamie has put such a lot of thought and care into the dishes, which shows his consideration to his diners. All of the staff are so friendly and look after you really well, Clare is a wonderful host! The restaurant is beautiful with a lovely ambience. I celebrated my birthday here and was looked after very well. Everything was perfect. Will book again whenever I'm in the area.
