We come here every year and last year we couldn’t get a Sunday roast due to “new suppliers”. So had pie which was awful. Then came again this year got a roast this time and was inedible the food had no seasoning. The meat was inedible tough and couldn’t be eaten the cauliflower cheese was tasteless we had to ask twice for gravy and for the parsnip. Which turn up black. We heard other people complaining about the same thing and the same excuse that it was supplier issues. Perhaps court the local area and get some quality produce

Just spent our annual week in Noss (4th to 11th April) and visited The Ship everyday, eating in there on 5 different days. The service, food and drink we received fr the team was first class every time. From the sea bass fillet special, to the mussels, the Noss burger, and even the sandwiches, everything was first class, washed down with a few pints of Jail Ale that Josh had ordered in for me after a request sent a month earlier. We celebrated our 11th wedding anniversary on the Saturday and they'd even put a congratulations card on the table for us.. A nice touch. This was our 14th stay in the village and we always use the Ship, so we are well aware of the standards set by Lisa the previous owner. Yes Youngs didn't do themselves any favours in the first year of owning the pub, but Josh & Lottie have turned the place around and it's back to its usual high standards. The effort and energy these two were putting in to ensure everyone had a pleasurable experience is admirable. Will everything be perfect every single time? Probably not, but life isn't perfect. I can assure you, it won't be through lack of effort or care from these two. So get yourselves down to the Ship and enjoy the best pub in the South Hams district. Colin Easterbrook

Family Easter Sunday lunch for 4. We booked on the morning, so last minute decision. Our table was right by the serving hatch with no other view. The chef and staff were working very hard and amazingly efficient, but we didn't want to be watching or hearing it. We couldn't hear ourselves speaking. Meal was nice apart from all of us having very hard, overcooked roast potatoes. For the price, I would not expect this. They were extremely busy though.

It’s been a while since we were here and it’s changed a lot. It’s still a good pub to stop at during a long walk but the food has taken a bit of a dive. I had a £27 rump steak which was very ordinary indeed and overpriced for what it was. Gnocchi was similarly dull and overpriced. We’ll probably go back but only for a pint and a packet of crisps.

As someone with a severe dairy allergy, eating out is always a challenge with staff never fully understanding. I’ve been going to The Ship Inn 1-2 times a year for the last 20 years. Since it has changed hands in the last 18 months it has sadly gone downhill. I went on a Friday evening and there were only 3 tables full which was a massive contrast to the usual bustling atmosphere of The Ship Inn where it was nigh impossible to get a table unless you booked a week in advance, even in the off season. We were met by nice staff who were obviously well trained. We ordered our drinks which came within good time but were very overpriced (£12 for a distinctly average “passion fruit kiss” which tasted like watered down squash). We were also offered still or sparkling water which I then discovered was charged at £4.65 per bottle of still water. Whilst waiting for our drinks, I realised how dirty the windows were - you could not see on to the terrace as the outside of the windows had clearly not been cleaned for a few months. Next came the biggest disappointment. For any regulars at The Ship, I’m sure they’d agree that the food was high end pub food with options for all. The menu this time had some good variation (some fish, burgers, pizza snd veggie options). We ordered 2 sides consisting of Davidstow Cheddar chips and seasonal greens. Our main courses were the heritage butternut squash and gnocchi. The butternut squash wasn’t even peeled, was hard and completely bitter. The gnocchi was swimming in oil and tasted of absolutely nothing. The sides never made an appearance until I asked a kind member of staff where they were (bearing in mind we were the only table being served as the others had finished their meals). The sides arrived after we’d finished our main meals - the davidstow cheddar chips came as a regular portion of chunky chips with no cheese. The seasonal greens was a ramekin sized bowl of boiled cabbage with a layer of water at the bottom (as it was April I’m fairly certain other greens are growing). Thankfully, we were not made to pay for the sides as they arrived 15 mins late, and one was the wrong dish. In conclusion, a very poor experience, and such a massive shame for a pure gem to be turned into a tip. Will not be returning.

We went for a Sunday lunch for 3 people, which we pre booked. When we arrived the restaurant upstairs was completely empty, so we asked whether we can have a table in the sun room, to which we were replied very shortly, by saying they were all booked as it was a busy Sunday lunch. However, when we were leaving after our meal, these tables were still empty, so we were quite put off by the unwillingness of the staff to help. Two of us ordered roast beef and the third person ordered a squash salad with a side of chips. The roast beef meals were very disappointing - the food was warm, not hot; the cabbage was very watery and was put on top of roast potatoes, making them soggy and tough; the beef itself was luke warm, stringy and very chewy. The gluten free option arrived with no Yorkshire pudding (obvs gluten free), however with nothing extra, but was priced the same as the option with a Yorkshire pudding. The lady that served us was very disinterested and on a verge of being patronising, when we asked her whether the gluten free option was charged the same for less food. The atmosphere in the pub wasn’t great, the staff weren’t interested in the customers (we understand it was a busy Sunday lunch, but they could have made more effort instead of standing by the cash machine and chatting), the food was overpriced for the quality of the roast dinner. On the positive, the squash salad with chips were good. So all in all quite a disappointment for the 2 people out of 3, which was a birthday lunch for one of the guests.

So start with positives. A beautiful spot to eat and drink in the sun, and closely located to a good trial. However, we ordered a sandwich, soup and chips as a snack before our walk and then had to wait around an hour for them. The sandwich, which cost £10, had very little cheese on. The soup was okay. The waiting staff, however, were helpful and got the sandwich topped up. Maybe we caught them on an off day, but it seems there's a problem with the kitchen. Perhaps even just the food we ordered? The burgers looked good, just no idea why our food took so long. We probably won't go back.

This has been a wonderful local pub for over twenty years. Have been twice since the new ownership and sadly the food is nowhere near the level that it used to be. I took friends and they were so embarrassed they asked for a refund. We then came again prior to Christmas and was such a let down. The atmosphere is still wonderful and as local a great walk. But I feel we no longer have it as an option to eat at due to the poor quality of fish, vegetables and even the pizzas aren’t what they were last year. Great to go and have a drink at though x

One of our favourite Devon pubs , but we felt that the food quality this time wasn’t as good as in the past. Service and atmosphere still friendly and relaxed, location beautiful, great that its dog-friendly. We absolutely love this pub and visit every time we come to Salcombe - at least twice per year. We didn’t know about the change in management and the staff are as friendly and the atmosphere and decor as lovely as ever - in fact, I think there has been some clever and comfortable refurbishment since our last visit. BUT… and I’m sorry there is a but… the quality of the food was not a patch on our decade or so of previous experiences there. Admittedly we visited at lunchtime on New Year’s Eve and maybe they were saving their energy for a busy evening ahead, but we were quite disappointed. The whitebait starters seemed to be ‘commercial freezer’ quality and were served with no lemon and only (I think) ready-made mayonnaise. The main course turkey sandwich was well-flavoured but the bread was just ‘ordinary’ white sliced bread, not a decent loaf, and there wasn’t as much filling as in the past. The turkey pizza was substantial but swimming in fat and grease. My burger was fine, though the chips were disappointing, and my husband’s mussels were ‘6/10’ and served with the same sliced loaf. We didn’t bother to try puddings. There was nothing really wrong with the food - and I was happy with my burger, which was beautifully cooked and seasoned, with great relishes in the bun- but it wasn’t the special culinary experience it has been in the past. Even the lemonade and apple juice are not good local brands (eg Luscombe) as in the past. I think maybe the aim is for a lower price point and to make this pub more affordable for lucky locals to visit regularly, whereas we went twice a year as a holiday treat so didn’t mind spending a little more. We wish the management and staff every success with their new venture. The location and atmosphere are still wonderful but it would be lovely to see some more ambitious cooking and mainly locally produced/ home made food on the menu.

Happily I am revising my previous review as after reading that The Ship Inn had come under new management since the visit below, we decided to give it another try. Hooray! It was like walking back into the old pub before it was sold, a warm welcome, Josh was a great attentive host as were all the waiting staff and the food was delicious. Very pleased that this long-time old favourite is back up to standard, it’s such a beautiful location it was sad to see its decline. Josh is clearly passionate about this pub and the experience offered to customers. Very pleased to be back to looking forward to visiting again 😁😁. It does pain me slightly to leave a 1-star review, but on our recent visit we were spoken to rudely by the staff, made to feel as if customers were an inconvenience, and eventually had to leave without any food other very dry pieces of stale cake. The Ship has been a family favourite for years, a top choice for any meals out. Sadly since the sale, Youngs brewery haven’t got to grips with the size of the pub yet. We’ve experienced one lunch with a very mediocre sandwich which was worse than something knocked up at home, and on giving it another try this week, we arrived to be told the kitchen were “having a break” and not taking any orders. They “might” take orders again in 25 minutes, but equally “they might not”. This was in the middle of the 12-2 lunch slot, the inside of the pub was totally empty but it was busy outside due to the sunny weather. So we duly ordered some drinks and sat and waited. In the meantime, a drinks order that was wrong was brought out. On pointing out that it was wrong the lady snappily questioned it before huffing “well I’ll have to go and make another one now!!”. On emerging again, we tried to offer some sympathy and ask if they had staff off sick. Her response and attitude was rude and unpleasant and essentially along the lines that customers were a massive inconvenience and who did they think they were all walking in expecting food. We finished up the awkward exchange by asking if the kitchen were now taking orders (30 minutes had gone by) to get a snappy response “no they’re not” before she walked off. At that point, all of us decided that was sadly the last time we’d visit The Ship. A sad end to what was a really great pub. I hope the brewery take note of what seem to be a slew of negative reviews and improve their approach to match the size and covers of the venue otherwise I can’t see it surviving as a business when it’s not even at full capacity with the summer holidays.

Not only is the Ship Inn an amazing location, right on the seafront but the food is amazing. The Crab croquettes were delicious and the whitebait was said to be the best ever. I also had the plant burger which was really good. The Ship Inn is also full of history and antiques if you're in Plymouth or anywhere near Noss Mayo, this is a must eat location. Please do keep in mind on the tides depending where you park.

After the sale of the pub, like many locals, we had given up on the place as the service and replacement staff were pretty dreadful. However, we heard a new manager has taken it over in the last couple of weeks so thought to give it one last go … I’m so glad we did . What a turn around! The new staff are now lovely and the food is so much better. I arrived with my rescue collie, and the barman, Ali, went out of his way to make sure we and my very shy dog had everything we needed. He was so kind. So if you are local and reading this from mid Nov 2024 onwards, give the Ship Inn another go . It’s getting back to what it used to be.

A genuine welcome, excellent service and high quality seafood, this proper pub has all the charm and welcome that makes me proud to be of Devonian blood. We were visitors but were made to feel welcome, our dog was well catered for too. Good beers, coffee, and the cleanest pub toilets we have ever experienced. A long way from home but we will be back in summer. Fantastic location too. Just don't park where the tide might come to.

A delightfully welcoming pub. Dog friendly. Tasty food. Such a picturesque setting. On an autumnal day it's perfect for having lunch, walking the dog, then perhaps returning for coffee and puddings.

Cris, Ali and Georgie were very welcoming and helped to make it a great evening. Delicious food and really appreciated the wine recommendation to complement the steak. Will recommend the Ship Inn to friends and family. Look forward to the next time.

Absolutely fantastic experience at The Ship Inn in Noss Mayo! From the moment we walked in, the warm, welcoming atmosphere made us feel right at home. The staff were friendly and attentive, offering top-notch service throughout our visit. The food was exceptional—every dish was bursting with flavor, beautifully presented, and made with the freshest local ingredients. The seafood, in particular, was a standout, perfectly prepared and truly a treat for the taste buds. The setting is stunning, with picturesque views of the harbor that just added to the whole experience. Our Sunday lunch at the Ship Inn was exceptional. The food was perfect, and the warm welcome made it even better! Josh Bond, the new general manager, took time out of his busy schedule to chat with us, sharing some great stories and jokes. It was absolutely worth the trip from Plymouth, and I can't wait to return. Thank you for making our Sunday!

Well this was our second visit to this pub. After a really dreadful experience last year my partner and I thought we'd give it another go as Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrers are our favourite places in Devon to visit. Well I can now say with 100% confidence that the new mangers have really turned the place around. The menu is perfect with a great range for everyone, the service top class, the food great and the whole atmosphere far better, what a turnaround! We'll definitely be returning and will recommend to our friends. Five stars!

Having been here in May and waited nearly two hours for our food we weren’t in any rush to return, however thank goodness we did as the new owners are running a slick service now. Friendly managers and team. Delicious food especially the mussels starter and all the desserts. Josh the manager pinned my daughter’s colouring to the board which made her day too. A friendly cosy pub for foodies, thanks for making our last night of our mini break perfect. We will def be back, maybe even tomorrow for lunch!

For the first time in far too long, I can honestly say that pur meals this evening were excellent. When Youngs first took over from Charlie and Lisa, to say it was a disaster would be an understatement. I have been there to eat about 4 times in the last year, and on each occasion it's been "okay" at best BUT going again tonight with Josh and Lottie at the helm, the Ship is well and truly back on course. Everyone was full of compliments about their meals and I couldn't find fault at all. Perhaps the drinks took a little while longer than they should have to find their way to the table, but it wasn't excessive, and it's a bit of a stretch to call it a criticism. Service - very good Atmosphere - very good Food quality - excellent Value for money - very good. So good to see you back old friend, long may it continue

We visited the Under New Management Ship Inn late lunchtime on a sunny Saturday, going to the outside area, which has great views of the inlet, and one of the staff helped our group of five secure a table and then didn’t mind when we switched to another table more in the sunshine when that became vacant. He came back once our food had arrived to make sure we were happy, which we were, and we got into a conversation about the pub having new management. Being first-time visitors, we didn't have any comparison to what preceded, but our experience was very positive. The food was good and all the staff we came into contact with were great. One floor up in a large room a children's party was underway with about 30 children and that all seemed to be going very well as its own self-contained event and just added positively to the general atmosphere. We would certainly visit again.

This is a lovely little pub in the sweet sleepy little village of Ashprington, found at the end of a walk from Totnes through the Sharpham Estate. I didn't try the food during this visit but it looked wonderful.

We popped in for a quick bite and the steak pasty did not disappoint and it was delicious. What we loved about it, it was hot 🔥 and full to the brim. It had a good portion of meat and it was well seasoned and tender. They had a lot of other savouries and sweets on offer and would recommend them all if the quality is the same as the pasties. I don't think you can do much about the atmosphere, 1 member of staff, empty shop and no noise, not even background music playing.
