Our first visit and we were not too sure when we entered as it looked very cramped and dark. However, staff were both friendly and helpful and although we had to wait a while it was worth it as the food was outstanding! My bacon, brie and cranberry toastie on thick granary bread was just the best ever. Crammed full of tasty bacon; covered with melted brie and just enough cranberry to offset the creaminess. It came with a huge dressed salad and coleslaw. As I struggled to finish the toastie I was very reluctant to leave the untouched salad and coleslaw but thankfully a takeaway box was provided and I enjoyed the salad with some tuna for my tea. So, two meals for the price of one! We will definitely go back. Thank you.

A real hidden gem just off the main car park in Modbury. We visited just after the cut off for breakfast but the owners were more than happy to serve us either breakfast or lunch. Food was delicious and the cakes were to die for!! We ended up purchasing another 8 pieces to take home!! Highly recommend their baked goods. 5⭐️

Popped in for breakfast and not disappointed. Would definitely recommend the sausage sandwich and creamy scrambled eggs & bacon on sourdough toast.

When on our way back home from visiting Mothecombe Gardens/ craft fair spotted this cute cafe behind car park. Had a lovely coffee and shared a cumberland sausage/bacon /egg and toasted brioche bun which was perfection(and we are both quite critical of food when out as we cook ourselves from scratch) and wish we had had one each. Asked the very pleasant and courteous chef/owner? if the sausages were local and he confirmed they were from butcher round the corner, so went and got some to take home. Really enjoyed the brief stop and congratulated the cafe for the lovely shared lunch. One point I would mention is perhaps a little bit of sprucing up of outside area would finish this little gem off beautifully, most folks appreciate this sort of attention to surroundings but all else just lovely. Thanks.

My friend had a substantial bacon sandwich and I a fried egg on sourdough toast. Two eggs with two slices arrived. Yum Friendly and helpful staff. When I asked for a glass of water, was given a carafe and glasses. Made our visit feel special. Our second visit. A little gem, hidden away, off the Main Street.

Pleasant little restaurant in rural Devon. The owner surprised us after thinking he didn't have chips for my very fussy autistic son by giving it to us as 'freebie' We witnessed a flurry of very happy loyal customers whilst we sat and ate, which is very telling... The avocado on toast was delicious, and the customer service was excellent...even though the owner was clearly very busy due to all of his custom, he paid attention to detail.

First visit on the way home from walking our dogs. There were tables outside in the sun and in the shade as well as tables inside. We chose the shade outside. I had all day breakfast and my wife had falafel on flat bread with coffees. Excellent food well presented and quick too. Offered us water with the meal - great service gratefully accepted. Although it's about 1 minute walk from the high street, it seemed a very peaceful and quiet location. For us, the location adjacent to the small car park worked really well as it was a hot day and we left the dogs a few metres away with the back of the car wide open - watching us eat ! They enjoyed the trip too.

This place is awful!!! Over priced and the Service is terrible, ordered 2 drinks. It took 30 minutes waiting for them and one came but not the other. Then waited further 15 minutes for the other one. Food made from cheap nasty ingredients, full of fat and processed. Also witnessed owner being rude to customers, raising her voice and shouting while pointing. Saying other customers were more important. AVOID COOL BEANS!!!

After popping in for coffee this afternoon after fruit picking at a local farm . The three members of my family stopped at your cafe. Wow, weren’t we impressed. A little gem has been discovered . We were allowed to eat our packed lunch with our bought coffees, only to see all the gorgeous food being delivered to customers. We only bought cheesy chips and normal chips but these too were delicious. Huge portions and totally amazing. Also a truly friendly and very professional guy serving the food. We were all incredibly impressed, so well done. We will be back!!!!!

We popped in here today after it was recommended by a lady who worked in the local pharmacy. The idea was really just to have a coffee. However when we arrived, and after a quick look at the menu we decided to order lunch. It was absolutely delicious. I can recommend the falafel salad, as it was delicious, and my husband enjoyed the carbonara. We will definitely visit again whilst we are here on holiday.

Recommended and featured in Devon live. Set behind the main street in the attractive town of Modbury. Very good coffee in this rustic café. Let down by plastic plants and untidy courtyard with weeds and more ugly plastic hanging baskets and trellis. Otherwise 5 star.🇬🇧🇳🇿

Best breakfast I've had in a while, cared about how I wanted my coffee. Great service, a hidden gem. I am surprised it has not been in here before, maybe because kingsbridge one closed people thought this one had as well??

So I've been compelled to update my review of this quaint little pub. We have been coming here multiple times a year for the last 6 years. It is always the highlight of our trip and the food is the gold standard of great pub food. Our latest trip here was nothing short of that. With the french food magician (Dom) injured and out of action, the food was still to his high standard (so a huge congratulations to the kitchen staff). Even though they were understaffed they made us feel welcome and any problems were quickly resolved, with apologies and an amazing sense of humour. Thanks Adam for being a great barman! Of course we will be back in a few months for a next trip down here.

I always visit the River Shack whenever I'm in the Devon area. Delicious food, friendly service & fabulous views. My wife always enjoys the yummy soups at lunch & I have enjoyed an excellent seafood spaghetti. Highly recommend, well worth a visit!

Outstanding local business. Food quality recently seems to have taken a major improvement and it was already good. They have new GF bread which makes all the difference too. A long standing community hub and caring staff. Not cheap but good value.

Dropped in for a quick lunch. Expensive for what it is. For example a small piece of frittata and a very small salad for nine ounces odd. Went home and had toast to supplement. Disappointing as had heard good things.
