The Rockfish in South Hams

Absolutely wonderful. Delicious food. Friendly, happy staff. We didn't book as online looked available, but when we arrived it was very busy. However, we were lucky to get the window seat. It was magical as it got dark, to watch all the lights on the water and the opposite shore. There was a great choice of fresh caught fish. We went for the excellent value set menu. The chowder was delicious, and the fish and chips cooked to perfection. We weren't rushed and had a lovely, relaxed meal. And the bonus on top, two sprats for our dog! We loved it. Shame we're not local to visit again. Thank you for such an enjoyable experience.

Food was really good . My dad and partner really enjoyed their calamari and smoked haddock. I had the ray wing which was cooked perfectly but was just not my thing ( I had never tried before) . The staff were excellent and the atmosphere was really pleasant. Liked their calamari fact there were lots of well behaved dog allowed.

Rockfish Dartmouth was brilliant for gluten free. They can do the entire menu gluten free and the food is excellent. And a free drink if you go on your birthday! Great place.

Such a wonderful experience. The fish and oysters was fresh from the sea and they tasted incredible. The service was lovely and well informed on the specials. It’s good to let the staff tell you about the catch of the day- it’s guaranteed that you’ll get your moneys worth. I really recommend the silver mullet and the cuttlefish. As always, only the best seafood here! Not sure how they get the batter so light and crispy, but it’s always the best fried fish I’ve ever tasted, and a good size portion too. Love that they allow dogs also, and they get a tasty sprat.

Clean kitchen fresh produce and desserts

Had takeaway fish and chips from Rockfish’s small, branch shop just down from the dine-in restaurant. Boy that took our order was brusque and unfriendly. Our takeaway was ready quickly, but the boys in the shop tried to pass off hake for the haddock we had paid more for. Fortunately, my daughter caught this before we left the shop, and we asked them to refund the difference. However, it left us feeling that they had been potentially sneaky and dishonest with us. And prices there are high to begin with. Be careful to check your order is correct before leaving. Hopefully this was a one-off and an honest mistake. Given this happened, though, it makes us unlikely to return.

We ate late around 5pm so the shifts were changing over so feel as if we were slightly caught in limbo for a bit. The food was amazing it was a special treat but well worth the money. Overall a good experience.

Great casual night out at Rockfish recently with friends. Staff were extremely friendly and professional, great fish straight off the day boat that morning and a lovely atmosphere. Just what's needed in dreary January.

Our second time visiting Rockfish and we were welcomed warmly by the friendly staff. Joanie is a treasure, we were so surprised she recognised us from last year. She's the reason we come back! And the delicious food of course, excellent value for fresh fish. Looking forward to our next visit!

Excellent food & service, good wine list to pair with. I really enjoyed it and look forward to returning. We came twice in 4 days and I went to the chippy too which was also excellent. V expensive but very delicious. Hake was reasonable and really nice, I’d have this instead of cod now. Only thing to be aware is the rockfish restaurant is full of dogs, so if you prefer not to eat surrounded by animals it will not be for you.

The fish is nice enough but sides are extra so it works out expensive and there are no vegetables to speak of so it doesn't really feel like a properly rounded meal.

Always well looked after. We are ceoliac so gluten free and feel super safe with delicious food from the whole menu available for us. Plus careful sourcing of sustainable local fish. Thank you Rock Fish. Keep up the good work.

Genuinely the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. Haddock was crisp, fresh and delightful. So good we had it again for lunch the next day! A must-visit.

My husband and I dropped in for a late Saturday lunch and were seated immediately. The staff were friendly and welcoming. You can choose from the standard menu or the market fish, which changes daily based on what came fresh off the boat that day. I went for the Brixham hake and it was fresh, meaty and crispy. It came with unlimited chips, but I'm glad I didn't go overboard because it meant that I had room for the tarte tatin. And holy moly was it worth it! Melt in the mouth caramelised apples and the creamiest vanilla gelato. I would legit drive three hours back to Dartmouth just to taste it again. Deffo pop in if you're in the area.

We came for lunch when we randomly decided to visit Dartmouth for the day. we hadn’t booked and they managed to fit us in with baby and dog. Staff really informative with the menu and liked how they had what kind of fish there is on the menus and what to expect with flavours. We had the smoked haddock with curried peas and unlimited chips which is a nice touch. Delicious. I had the fish tacos, whilst tasty they were I’m sorry to say a little bland! Could go with some kind of extra sauce and seasoning. All in all a nice experience though.

Had the pleasure of dining at Rockfish last night. Fabulous food, superb service from Alfie. He was amazing. Nothing too much trouble. He should be promoted. So knowledgeable and exuberant. A pity not much choice of Brixham fish left ( we had an 8pm slot so understandable ) will go earlier next time.

It was a busy night and the staff were excellent, keeping us informed about the delay and apologising in such a charming way, it made the evening longer, but we were not in any hurry. Food was really good and sitting by the kitchen made it a great last evening in Dartmouth, but we will be back

Rockfish in Dartmouth was the standout place to eat during our stay in Kingwear. The welcome, effortless attention to detail and easy chat from Joanie was out of this world, whilst maintaining a professionally discrete table service. We were served the freshest tasting and daringly simply prepared fish dishes I've encountered in years!

Very reliable restaurant. Not cheap but first rate. I eat here alot. I went to another supposedly great fish and chip place in Brixham recently - Simply Fish. It was dire but did make me appreciate how good Rockfish is. Waitress Imogen could not have been better. Overall apart from price cant be touched.

The fish is always first class. The prices are not cheap. In the early days the restuarant had draught beer (at a reasonable price). These days it is small cans of rather expensive beer. So, a very good fish and chips - just a rather expensive one.

A wonderful dining experience. We ate early on a Monday evening, the young staff, Mikey and Leah were very welcoming and knowledgeable. Our meals were superb, fresh fish cooked to perfection. Attention to detail, great music, nice surroundings. What more could you ask for? Can’t wait to go again.

The food is excellent; so good we returned a second time during our short stay holiday in Dartmouth. The tables are close together which can be a bit of an issue if you have a dog with you. On our second visit a couple refused to be sat at a table next to our dog, which is perfectly reasonable, but with nowhere for the dog to hide we felt a little uncomfortable.

Wonderful restaurant excellent fish and friendly service. When i return to Dartmouth I will certainly eat here again.

Great food and service at this restaurant. We were here on a miserable rainy day at late lunchtime and the place was still busy with locals so that should tell you how good the food is. Maybe make a booking on a nice day. The price is high for lunchtime to us ( we are cheap northeners 😂 ) but the quality of the food amazing and fresh. One of the nicest plates of fish and chips I have ever had.

After 20 yes as a coeliac I have been knocked out by this restaurant. Gluten free Monkfish, GF tempura veg , bloody marvellous. GF curry sauce, oh my goodness a great find. Thank you chefs for making my week. Love what you do!

The serving lady was so nice, the atmosphere, food and everything was top nutch. I will recommend you visit here if you want good food and a wonderful atmosphere.

We were a little bit early so started an orderly queue outside it was Regatta week! Delicious as always.

Food was excellent and freshly cooked. Service between courses was very slow,to the point where staff apologised twice for the delay. We called without booking and were lucky to get a table.

What a wonderful evening. Staff absolutely brilliant. Aimee looked after us magnificently!! The fish (lemon sole) was beautifully cooked- out of this world! Lots of ‘catch of the day’ choices/ written on paper table settings so you didn’t have to try to remember them all! Busy, lively atmosphere but no extra long waiting times. Been 3 years since we last visited but as soon as we got to Dartmouth we headed straight to Rockfish. The mackerel and gurnard was exquisite. The staff were lovely and even had some dried sprats for our dogs!

Wonderfully cooked and fresh fish with unlimited chips. What's not to love. Not cheap but fresh fish is worth paying for. And loved the fishing forecast with variations in the loo!!

We visited the restaurant last and a half a week ago while doing the track observation for SWCP,The cod is and the crab is nice.The server did also help us to rearrange the table to inside when the weather is before going bad outside while the Royal gegatta is on going. If it happens,have a layover during the hike, maybe take a chance and get a side dish to try if there are any keto options on the menu can choose.

Fantastic fish and the unlimited chips is a fantastic idea. Would recommend booking as many people were turned away at the door due to being fully booked.

We had the very best time at Rockfish in Dartmouth. The food was excellent. Our server was clearly fairly new but he had the broadest smile and was the perfect balance of attentive without being intrusive. We loved the open kitchen seeing the chefs so happy in their work. The lady with the bun smiling all the time. I work in hospitality and know how hard it can be. And when you get as little time off as we do its all the more special when you are well looked after. You guys rock. Thank you so much for looking after us so well. Oli & Helen Ps sorry we didnt tip on the night as we didnt have cash. We made sure we came back the following day though and put that right. See you next year.

I was excited to try this restaurant tonight after reading the reviews but was rather disappointed. I had the Fritto Misto and it was so bland. I was expecting a mixed platter but instead received a starter size dish that was just deep fried with some mayo on the side for £22.95. My husband ordered Sea bream which he said tasted nice but the size was tiny and he was hungry when he left. I think the bottomless fries are rather confusing as the waiter will tell you to order one and everyone can share and order more but when one portion arrives, it takes a good 20 min to get more and by that time you have eaten your food. I would also suggest adding some vegetables or salad to your dishes and making the sizes bigger as your portions are tiny and overpriced. The food is fresh and the staff are very friendly. It was a ok from me. Sorry, I don’t think I would rush back or recommend this restaurant especially if you are looking for something special. I have added a photo of the Fritto Misto.

Always good and great value. Food was excellent lemon sole exceptional. All our meals were lovely and service was friendly and attentive. You can’t beat this place for a fish meal.

Came here for a meal on Tuesday 13th as a group of 3 with the dog. The staff were very friendly and attentive and we were seated 1 minute after we arrived. The service was very quick considering how busy it was and the we all agreed it was possibly the best fish and chips we’d ever had. We were asked upon entry about dietary requirements etc which added to the professionalism without the place being pretentious. The menu catered for just about everyone and you could tell how fresh everything was. The staff couldn’t do enough for us without being intrusive and overall we had a very comfortable evening all leaving very satisfied and the unlimited chips ensured no one left hungry. Overall, it’s definitely worth paying a visit and would definitely book again!

Restaurant looked half empty on Tuesday but when I asked for a table for one, I was informed all the tables were fully booked until 3pm when I was leaving Dartmouth.Not the first time this has happened to me here so I asked whether there was a company policy against solo customers. One of the staff said there wasn't, I did think I might try booking well in advance next time but I still needed a meal and went to the Royal Castle restaurant. Very welcoming even though it was clearly busy. Rockfish you lost a customer prepared to spend £30+ and I won't try again. I'll be at the Royal Castle where the staff are welcoming and the food excellent

Oh my life!! I have never tasted chips like these before! And you can ask for extra chips without any cost! The fish is beautifully presented and so delicious. The staff make you feel very welcome. Definitely worth a visit, and it might be worth booking before you go, since they get very busy.

Great seafood from this place. We were there for a late lunch as they were very busy during lunch hours 12 - 2pm (so book a table if you are going during busy summer season). We really splashed out for lunch as we wanted to try a few of the market specials of the day. We got the lobster, crab, sardines (starter), and the kid's fish and chips. All were really fresh and well prepared. Really tasty.

Lovely place, fresh fish, love the way they write down their specials for each table. I have now been twice and each time the food was excellent.

Even though the restaurant advertises as having “unlimited chips”, this only is included if you sit inside weirdly enough. We were surprised to have to pay for two sides of chips when sitting outside and they didn’t even check with us before ordering them. Strange and dishonest policy so do not get caught out!

We had a lovely meal at Rockfish, very fresh food and tasted amazing. It has to be the quickest we've ever been served - after we'd ordered, I think we got our meals in 10/15 minutes! The service was fantastic. Puddings were quite expensive for the size, but the main reason for visiting is the fish anyway. Would definitely recommend the fish tacos and hake!

Absolutely delicious seafood. We ordered from the market catch of the day which was the dressed crab and plaice fish and a starter of cockles from the set menu. Love their sustainability catching and no waste methods, read about on their website.

Amazing place, waiter talked us through all of the fish caught fresh that day and couldn’t do enough for us. Delicious food, the cod with garlic butter was melt in the mouth, perfection.

Wanted to say many thanks to Arthur in particular who looked after us and took the time to go through the menu. Loved the seat by the kitchen to see the professionals work. This place is worth going to, especially seeing the fresh fish coming from Brixham market.

The food was good, however the service was the worst I've ever experienced. We were sat next to an open door which meant we were cold, when I asked for it to be closed the delightful waitress said "I will close it for a short time but when I get hot, I'll open it again". Sure enough she opened it 5 mins later and began arguing with me when I told her I was cold and told me to move tables. I then saw and heard her mocking me to another staff member. The manager on duty was pretty useless when I complained. Won't be back again. They don't deserve my money! There's so many better places to eat in Dartmouth! Amended: I have amended this to a 1 star after receiving a rude email from Rockfish that is basically calling me a liar! Absolutely shocking service.
