Great food, atmosphere and staff. Nearly opted for the big burger and chips option as an easy choice, but we had 4 small plates instead – superb quality, beautifully cooked and plated by people who care. Homemade focaccia, pearl barley and pigeon risotto, rarebit with leeks and poached egg – plus parfait with fresh hot brioche. Now that sounds all a bit fancy – but it was just a relaxed place for lunch. We also narrowly avoiding stealing the crockery as that was nice too. I’m getting tired of every pub in the area charging £32 for fish and chips. But we pottered out for a walk around the village after a £45 lunch bill including a couple of soft drinks in a great pub where obviously people care. We sat in the cosy main part of the pub which is all flagstones and open fire, and there’s a large conservatory/orangery at the back that was 70% full on a midweek Wednesday with a wonderful view. Top marks. Thanks.

Delightful Sunday lunch! My partner (vegan) and I went for a late Sunday lunch yesterday. We turned up early for our table and were greeted warmly and told we could have a drink at the bar while we wait (Guinness was lovely). To start I had the rarebit - the rich and flavoursome - lovely! And for main I had roast beef and my partner had vegan wellington with Sunday veg and gravy. Both of us were highly impressed and we would definitely recommend!! Thank you for a lovely afternoon team!!

I can’t fault the food or the price at this restaurant. We did enjoy and the setting was beautiful - the hall itself is really impressive. Only feedback : I feel like they’ve missed a trick! When we told a local we were going there it raised an eyebrow - they considered it very highly and on arrival, I understood why. But on seeing the menu, I couldn’t help but be a little disappointed. For such prestigious surroundings and a grand entrance, I was surprised the menu consisted of burger, curry and fish and chips. I was expecting fine dining and locally sourced ingredients to match the high level of service and location. I would happily have paid more than the £14 main course price tag for something a little more special. As I said, the food was good - just a little underwhelming as it had the feeling of being bought in / pre made (example - the pâté). I would recommend the chicken pie but not the brownie - it wasn’t really a brownie and needed ice cream or cream with it.
