A great little stop off for tea and cake with fantasic views to the Welsh Hills on a clear day. The warm scones are delicious and reasonably priced.

Have visited the Tollgate on many occasions and always had a good experience. However, today after a Bath hospital visit my wife and I went to the Tollgate for a treat only to be turned away at the door by the waitress informing us they were now closed this was despite open signs being on display and the website advertising opening hours until 4pm. Currently with businesses in recovery is it acceptable to turn away £20 - £30 worth of afternoon tea business 20 minutes before the advertised closing time? Not to mention the lost revenue when we don't return and the lost revenue when we inform family and friends not to go unless its at least an hour before closing. An explanation to clarify what constitutes their actual closing time in order to save wasted trips and fuel would be nice, is it 4pm weekdays or is it like a pub where 'last orders' are 30 minutes before closing.

What a fantastic find on our way home from a weekend in Bath. The afternoon tea was divine. Beef and horseradish finger sandwiches, fruit scones with jam and clotted cream and a homemade cake to boot. Left feeling satisfied and ready for the journey home. Lovely service, lovely food and amazing view. Highly recommend!

Lovely breakfast with really good ingredients. The sausages and bacon were of the highest quality. Service was very friendly. My only, tiniest of niggles was that the conservatory was a little ‘fresh’ and needed another heater to feel homely.

Visited the Tolgate today for breakfast after a few days break away in nearby Bradford in Avon. We’ve driven past the Tolgate many times and always fancied popping in, so today we did. We were sat in the conservatory area which was very nice, just a tad cold but the outside temperature was near 0. Our order was taken almost immediately, two hot drinks, a breakfast and eggs Benedict. A friendly couple then sat on the table next to us and ordered their food around five/ten minutes after we had. Shortly after, the hot drinks came and not long after that the couple on the table next to us had their two breakfasts brought to their table. Some time had past and our breakfast still hadn’t arrived, we had been waiting around half an hour. There was one other table with two people on it in the tea room so it wasn’t particularly busy. After forty minutes of waiting for breakfast, I approached the kitchen as I couldn’t find a server and asked the chef about the breakfast. He informed me that the order had never been given to him. We were travelling back to wales and didn't want to waste anymore of the day so unfortunately wasn’t able to wait any longer for the kind chef to cook the food for us. The female waitress and male chef were both very apologetic and I believe this was an accident, however did spoil our visit.

Having planned to spend this mid-week morning at the nearby Dyrham Park we had reserved a table here for lunch. We were both hungry after a good 2-hours walk around the Park’s gardens. This small café-restaurant is right on the A46 between Bath and the M4 at Junction 18. The views towards East Bristol are expansive, and it was a beautifully clear day. This was our first visit to an eatery in 2022. It was also well-overdue for this restaurant; as it is located on the main A46 route to the M4 from both Bath and East Bristol. Both my partner and I have driven-past this place hundreds of times, having lived in the area, in my case, for most of the last 40 years. Today our table was reserved for 13:30 and we arrived a good 15 minutes early (not a problem) and had a short wait whilst our table was cleared and cleaned from the previous occupants. We studied the menu and both decided on a ‘Berry Go Round’ smoothie and then the beef burger. Sadly, the smoothies were ‘off the menu’, but the burgers were thankfully not. My partner opted for no burger bun, whereas I had the ‘full-fat’ version. Our coffee and non-alcoholic drinks were soon served - the coffee was good and strong, and my sparkling rhubarb and apple water was excellent. The burgers arrived after a reassuring wait (thus indicating that they had been cooked to order). The burgers were served hot with raw and caramelized onions, leaves and tomatoes plus 3 good crisp onion rings. The brioche bun I enjoyed allowed me to eat from my hand whereas my partner had to use cutlery. We both agreed that we have rarely had a more moist, tender and tasty burger: it was fabulous. Slightly pink and so juicy, and the chips were good too. It is unusual for me to order a burger, but today it just appealed (maybe my sixth-sense told me?) Service was excellent and charming. The conservatory was a bit cold, but we were suitably dressed and warm from our walk, so that didn’t affect us. This is a very pleasant eatery; maybe ‘pleasantly quirky’ but much to be enjoyed. We will be back and it will be difficult not to have another of those wonderful burgers!

On Friday 19th Nov I telephoned to book a table for 3 at 12 noon for lunch on Tuesday 23rd Nov. This was achieved with some difficulty, as the number at the foot of each menu page is disconnected. (I pointed this out to the gentleman I spoke to, who in fact telephoned me back to confirm where I had seen it). On arriving today, we were told there was "no hot food" as the chef was off. Apparently this happens most Tuesdays. After traveling 50 miles to meet a relative, this was extremely disappointing, as on a cold day we were looking forward to hot food. There is nothing on the Website to say no hot food on Tuesdays! It reduces the menu by over 50%, leaving sandwiches, and baked (microwaved) potatoes. On the positive side, the staff were very apologetic and understanding. Gave us complimentary scones! The food we had (sandwiches and cake) was excellent. We normally call in for coffee when passing, and though lunch would be good. Very disappointed. Why were we not told of the absence of hot food when we booked!!!!!!

Had lunch here this week. We were seated in the conservatory which was very cold. I’m sure in the summer it would be lovely but not early November without heating! I didn’t like the plastic tablecloth’s but they had been cleaned before we sat down. However, the menu was very extensive and we were delighted with the food. We waited a long time to get service in between courses which wasn’t ideal, I think they must have been short staffed. I’d like to visit again to see if we have a better experience.

Two months ago, our daughter booked for Sunday lunch today as part of our family weekend, eight of us. We arrived today only to be told that they were fully booked. When we said that we’d booked 2 months ago, the reply was, ‘Well, I’ve only been here a month”!! The staff made us feel unwelcome, tried to cram us all into a tiny room at the end where a staff member was eating their lunch. No offer to help with the pushchair down the steps, no apologies for totally missing our reservation; in fact, we were made to feel as though we were a major inconvenience. We left in disgust. We ended up in the local Rose and Crown, where we were made very welcome and, although fully booked, the staff went out of their way to fit us all in for an absolutely delicious roast lunch.

Waitress returned 10 mins later to say that nothing on the lunch menus she had given us was available and were only doing roasts dinners. I get restaurants are only just opening back up but you would of thought the dipsy waitress would have enough brain cells to know what menus she is working with. I have driven past the venue many times before discovering the real beauty inside this old charming restaurant. It's quite easy to miss as it's located in the middle of no where, however that's what makes it so special. If you previously visited you will know exactly what I mean. -The food is very tasty and presented like at a high end restaurant, traditional English cuisine really reflects on the history and atmosphere of the building, creating a long lasting experience. I have visited with my grandmother during the pandemic once everything has opened up for a few months, I have to say she is a very fussy lady, but I can't thank enough for creating a safe and a clean environment not only for her but for all returning and new customers, It's been really hard to make her feel comfortable during this horrible time. She has enjoyed the food and the whole experience overall, the scones were fresh and probably the best we have ever had. Big thank you to the whole Tollgate team, we can't wait to visit you soon.

Booked a table for lunch / afternoon tea as an alternative stop en route home back from a holiday in Wales.I understand that they had a few challenges to deal with during the day which may have impacted our experience. That said there wasn’t a great welcome or attempt to manage customer expectations so there was an understanding that there could be delays so you felt you were being looked after.Took about an hour for food to be served - afternoon tea x 2, fish finger and a tuna sandwich. Two meals arrived first with no cutlery or sauces offered, which had to be chased together with the afternoon teas which arrived 10 minutes later.Food itself was ok bar the sandwiches on the afternoon tea where some were a little dry as if they’d been sitting around a while. Then trying to pay took a long tine as the card machine was down, left a little in limbo and had to wait around 30 minutes before finally being able to process my card payment. By this point there was a queue forming of other guests who were trying to pay.Maybe we visited on an off day as chose the place based on reading previous reviews. Hope that’s the case because the setting and location was very convenient.

Menus were handed out with plastic covers no sign of being wiped down between tables!I’ve been to a much better restaurant where menus were put under a glass top on the table therefore not touched much more hygienic .Tables cleaned off inbetween. Cutlery served in a fistfull here (in a bunch ) not individually wrapped in serviettes .Waitress put gloves on to serve food and drink but some food served by male waiter wearing only one glove so my plate had no glove used on it !What for goodness sake is that about ??Glasses were not all clean .Table was small square could not socially distance 4 people. Also too close to big table with family with a noisy toddler in a small conservatory !Food very mediocre for price Limited menu ..Burger with chips 11 pounds.Fish cake meal was frozen and not fresh, macaroni cheese dish was not very big and unremarkable . No wine cooler for white wine unfortunately. However, Staff were pleasant .Quite a few vulnerable older people in there being served deserve better protection from staff.People coming in both ways through the conservatory door where we were sitting right by our chairs. Needs better planning .Not well thought out.Need better spacing with tables Will not be returning l’m afraid .Peta Bray

I rarely leave a negative review but this was a disappointment. Had heard good reviews, but sadly our visit not a positive experience. Had to look for server, after being left with menus. My teabag arrived in a cup, the hot water forgotten, then arrived. Surely a tea room makes tea in the pot? My friends 'Flat white' was a cappachino, with lots of froth. So sad, the views were lovely, and the cakes looked nice, but we went for hot drinks, not great.

Just home from celebrating my daughter in law’s baby shower with family’s & friends at the Tollgate Tearooms, where the ladies laid on a fantastic spread of sandwiches, cakes & scones. It’s a perfect location to meet up at and the service today was first class - thank you ladies

Stopped for breakfast on the way to Westonbirt. Had to wait half an hour for the breakfast to arrive. The plate was stone cold, so the food was lukewarm. The sausages had a hard crust as though they had been under the hot lamp for days. So the food was pretty awful. A couple beside us also waited for ages for their food and when it came is was the wrong thing. How can the service be so bad when the place wax nearly empty?Having passed this place many times and finally getting to stop for breakfast I was sorely disappointed. I certainly shall not be stopping again.

Drive past this place so much and have always wanted to go in and try it. Finally managed it and it was a lovely surprise. The view from the top of Bath is beautiful. Was a wet windy day so couldn't see as far. My little one had a milkshake which was enormous, her eyes lit up when it came to the table. I had a quick soup and chips to share together. Service was great, food was lovely and presented perfectly. One small downfall, it was a little cold in there and the toilets were outside, were pretty cold and smelly.

Un sitio cálido y acogedor donde nos recibieron y atendieron de una manera única. Es justo lo que necesitábamos después de haber viajado en carretera por largo tiempo.

We have often driving passed and always seen a parked car park. So at 3.30pm on a Saturday we popped in, to this lovely cafe, which on a clear day has brilliant views of Bristol and the Severn Bridge from its conservatary. The staff were welcoming and friendly. We had Wiltshire Ham, eggs and chips, followed by toffee apple slice ( well a massive slice) plus milkshake in a unique glass. Very tasty food

I stopped here, following a walk at the nearby National Trust. Staff were so helpful and patient (I changed my mind about what to order, after I saw food being brought to nearby table). Food was beautifully presented, great taste. I only wished that I had room for one of their home made cakes...they looked delicious. Definitely value for money.

The cake lovely the views fantastic and the, service good. But they don't know how to make a cup of tea. I was serv6a pot of hot water in a metal tea pot with tea bag on the side. A good cup of tea is made by pouring boiling water onto the tea. It does make a big difference.

Had breakfast here on a Saturday morning was very nice. I had eggs Benedict's and my partner had pancakes with bacon both were really nice, if I was being picky I would have liked a bit more hollandaise sauce but it was still lovely. You can bring your dog in and the cakes looked amazing. Only let down we had to park in the overflow and it was rather muddy and the outside loos could do with a spruce but this would in no way put me off. I highly recommend it.

We have driven past the Tollgate many times and this time we were pleased to be able to stop for lunch. The restaurant is clearly popular and we were pleased that we had phoned ahead to reserve a table. The menu has some interesting choices and caters for vegetarians very well. We were all satisfied with our choices - falafel burger, fish finger sandwich, smoked salmon salad, hallumi and avocado rarebit - and very good coffee.

I needed to stop for a cup of tea after a long journey when I came accross this lovely cafe with beautiful views! I was astonished by the variety of cakes and oh so tasty too. My favourite was the chocolate brownie, I had to take a piece away for later. The staff were friendly and I could not fault the service. I will definately be returning. Thank you Tollgate! :)

We stopped for breakfast on our way to the M4. The cafe had signs advertising Trip Advisor awards for gluten free food. However when I asked for gluten free toast with my breakfast I was told that they did not have any that morning as they were waiting for a delivery. The rest of my breakfast was very well cooked, but I was not offered any reduction in price due to the lack of toast. We were also disappointed by the coffee which was very weak and the regular size was very small for £2.50. Not sure if we would call there again.

When checking out on trip advisor it said they did gluten free meals. On our way from Bathford to Oxford we decided to have a breakfast to set us for the day. We asked on arrival for the gluten free menu (it never materialized) and did they do full English gluten free the waitress said yes they did, we ordered one gf and one big boy breakfast tea and coffee. The chef came out and said the sausage wasn’t gf. We said that’s fine leave it off, he also has our order showing that we had ordered a bacon sandwich and breakfast gf. We explained that it was wrong and told him what we had ordered. Drinks arrived ok then when food arrived big boy was fine however the gf had sausage and toast on! I told the waitress that definitely want a gf breakfast and to take away, I also advised them that just removing the non gf items would not be ok, at this point I said it didn’t matter I wouldn’t have breakfast as it would need to be redone (I wasn’t confident it would be right either) then they brought me a non gf bacon sandwich they said I’d ordered. Another customer who had ordered a bacon sandwich and coffee was bought the sandwich I had been offered he refused as was clap cold. At this point we asked for the bill and left. They really don’t have a clue what they’re doing.

We stopped at this lovely cafe with great views for lunch. There was another couple in front of us with a young child that had been waiting a while to be seated. The male waiter barely acknowledged us and continued to clear tables. There were several empty tables. After several minutes he showed us to our table. He had an awful attitude and treated us as if we were an inconvenience as opposed to paying customers. He returned after around ten minutes with the same attitude and took another tables order but failed to serve the couple that were in front of us with the child. They waited around 20 minutes and then left in disgust. The food was ok but nothing special albeit the cakes looked nice. We won’t be returning to try them with that attitude. Such a shame as I’m sure allot of people are out off by the service / attitude.

We have attended the tollgate on many occasions giving the staff the benefit of the doubt and every time we are left disappointed! It takes forever to even be served then the staff are always extremely rude not able to take simple orders and then arguing with you when they’ve messed up, what happened to the customer is always right!! We won’t be returning as we’ve wasted a lot of money here over the years and I will spread the word.

Just had a family lunch of 11 of us. The service was impeccable, the variety of food on offer was sufficient and different from usual pub fayre with very tasty curries. Biryani was full of flavour, with good vegetarian and children's options. Trad Sunday lunch excellent with fresh veg. The staff were so friendly and attentive on what was a very busy day. Decor and cleanliness tip top. A real pleasure, we were looked after very well from start to finish. Prices reasonable too, although the desserts may need to be rebalanced between cost and quantity. A lovely lunch for all. Thank you. Steve + 10

Take a punt on the Grumpy Griffin. It might be your lucky day but then again you might regret it. A mixed set of results from customers. Mine was negative. No real ale. Only a few peeps on Sunday mid-afternoon and one was drunk as a Lord and seemingly spoiling for trouble. Background music was fine. Quality tv showing a premiership game. Just cider, lager and Guinness on tap. Feels like a local pub where others are not made welcome.
