Cross House Inn in South Gloucestershire

The Cross House never disappoints, great food, excellently cooked. Menu varies regularly as well. Our go to place for a good dinner out.

What an amazing meal. Couldn’t fault the taste and presentation. Staff really friendly and obliging and we will certainly be going there again. Well done.

Four of us had really good meals here. All had roast dinner. Plenty of well cooked meat & veg'. Attentive staff. Nice decor. Clean & smart place. 4 stars for atmosphere as customer had a yappy dog which was a little bit annoying.

My husband and I had an early 6pm dinner at the Cross house tonight (Friday) and it was so so lovely. First when we arrived and came in from the quiet dark cold outside we were welcomed with a lovely busy happy atmosphere in the bar. We then come into the restaurant which was very nice not as load as the bar which we really liked so we could talk. And the tables were nicely spaced so you didn’t feel like everyone was listen to your conversation. Our first waitresses who was a lovely girl straight away made me feel very comfortable with the fact I am gluten free. Some restaurants can make you feel like your such an inconvenience but she was lovely and shared how she is gluten free too. It really made the world of difference for me. There was a lot of choice on the menu and it said which options were gluten free available. We started with the bread olive and oil (gluten free bread) and it was delicious! My husband had the pie (not gluten free) and he said it was very nice! Although pastry a little thick in the corners of the pie. I had the calves liver which they did with sautéed potatoes instead of bubble and squeak (due to the gluten). And for pudding there was a big choice and again things that I could have too which is rare in other restaurants. My husband had afforgato and had the Black Forest pavlova which was so delicious!!! We came away feeling very well looked after, the staff were all so lovely and friendly, lovely atmosphere and food! And again the best restaurant I have been to so far as a gluten free. Hence the glowing reviews and mentioning gluten way too many times 😂 10 out of 10 all round! Might be my new favorite place!

Came for a friends baby shower, lovely atmosphere and venue. Had a lovely day, staff were so helpful, the chardonnay is to die for and the steak was insane!

Lovely pub, the staff were great. The food was lovely, but it could have been a little hotter. Would definitely recommend though. We will definitely be going back.

Great country pub with fine ales and exceptional food

We picked the pub as we were driving past. We were very pleased we did. Pleasant staff, the beef burgers were very good and the atmosphere was good. We'll be back.

Wonderful country pub with amazing food.

Wasn’t sure what to expect as a friend recommended it. Very pleasantly surprised by how good the roast dinners are, I was a bit upset about leaving some. Ample portions & very flavourful. I will be back & I will clear my plate 👍🏼

I don't think pubs get any better than this?! We have been many times now over the years, and even hired the whole restaurant for the night before our wedding. The food is always exquisite, regardless of which option you pick, the staff are always super friendly, great atmosphere, and the pub itself is so lovely, with a gorgeous restaurant and outside space. We will come back whenever we can!

Lovely place for lunch, slightly limited menu and only main meals available at lunchtime. Very pleasant in the conservatory and had a lovely garden to eat/drink in to.

Great pub not been here for years but I will be back

Really nice pub with a beautiful garden

The pub has been refurbished to a high standard with an oak framed dining room at the back, giving an idyllic view of Doynton church. Their CRM system is amazing if after having booked there once, they will have your name recorded against your telephone number. The food is copious and well executed. Had a wonderful ham hock terrine with home made piccalilly which was divine. The chips are served skin on, the fish in thin battered and then rolled in flour before cooking. Could have had more seasoning. Fish was prime haddock. Great ale choice and a comprehensive choice of wines. The service is excellent bar one slip no sugar with coffee. Quickly remedied. The coffee is top notch on a par with Italian standards which is very rare in the UK. Congratulations!

Beautifully modernised village pub. Stunning oak framed dining area. Superb food - great veggie options. Clearly an imaginative chef but not over fancy. Rates in top two of places to eat in Bristol area. Well worth the trip for lunch and a pretty walk.

Really yummy food. We had a sirloin and a flat iron steak. With focaccia to share as a starter. Some reviews have mentioned small portions sizes but that certainly wasn’t the case with us. They were just right. Service was timely and friendly. The atmosphere and view out the back were great. About the only negative was that one of the steaks was rare rather than medium rare as asked for, but that wasn’t a problem for us.

Glorious pub. Delicious food made with real attention to detail and care but never strays into being pretentious or earnest. Relaxed and excellent service. Lovely interior. Pulls off that trick of making it all seem effortless and natural although anyone who's tried will know the hard work and skill that goes into that! Reccomended.

The Cross House is a great place to eat and hang out with friends. All the staff are very professional and welcoming. The food is amazing. Recommend booking a table as it’s a very popular place.

Fantastic food, went for Sunday lunch with my daughter. Best food I have ever tasted, well presented, lovely staff, could not do enough for us, did not need to ask for more water, they kept topping it up. Can’t wait to go again, I would recommend to everyone.

Popped in for a pot of tea on a Saturday lunchtime part way through a 10 mile walk. Excellent service from the staff. Menu looked really good, interesting dishes, as did the food that passed me. Clearly a popular place to eat. There was plenty of room in the bar area. Music was quiet and unobtrusive. Definitely would return and maybe for food in the future. There is a large car park to the side of the pub with views of the village church.

Lovely meal, great staff. This place has been transformed . You will have to book well in advance to get a table in the new extension. We will definitely be back.

Great food at reasonable prices.

Second time visiting, really cracking food reasonably priced for the high standard, good wines and cocktails. Friendly, relaxed but attentive service. Would absolutely recommend and will be back time after time ourselves.

Lovely place to stop and have a quiet drink

Excellent food and great service. Can get very noisy in the bar area such that it's advisable to book after 7.30, by which time the noisy drinkers have gone home for dinner. They seem to shout over each other. The barn at the back is far quieter and a lovely, contemporary oak construction.

Foods really good, I personally like places that are more cozy ,, turn down the lights a bit and light some smaller lights and it would feel more comfortable,, Slightly pricier than some places , but very good quality food and decent portion sizes

Dropped in for a cheeky pint on a wet Sunday cycle ride. Very friendly staff, roaring wood stove to dry us out and a decent choice of beers. Overall, very nice. We didn't eat but food looked nice and judging by how busy it was on a Sunday lunchtime, I'd say it was as good as it looked.

Great village pub for food or just a drink

We had a Saturday lunch in winter as a group of four. We were impressed with the quality of the food and the staff were very accommodating with our small dog. Although a little highly priced, I would say that it's worth it.

Very good hope to book again soon.

This place is consistently fantastic. We’d booked through OpenTable on Christmas Eve, unfortunately OpenTable had allowed us to book a time they weren’t actually serving, this was a bit disappointing but the staff handled it really well, we were offered the first table when they opened for dinner, a great table and bit of a discount - honestly hats off to the staff they really turned things around. The service is always great, really friendly and happy smiley staff. Fantastic drinks with good variety, but the food is absolutely INCREDIBLE! I have been here over 10 times and I have never had a bad meal at all. This place deserves the full 5* rating!

Top service and the meals were all lovely. Not had a fish and chips for a while that tasted so good, the batter was just spot on. Definitely will go back again while currently staying around here. Great staff too.

We visited The Cross House for a family birthday. The food was very good and the waiting staff were attentive and friendly. We definitely recommend this gem of a country pub

All aspects of the evening were excellent, 'fine dining' perfectly describes my experience. All of the group with me felt the same too!

Amazing food, plenty of parking, good front and back garden with a nice canopy. Friendly staff, kept the beers flowing for our table. Cheers this was our 2nd visit..ps the pate was the tastiest and smoothest I've ever had

Food absolutely lovely, can't fault that, but why the service charge, and not give you the chance to tip by choice ?... This is added on the bill but optional, I know that, and is in the small print along with allergy info. I would have left the same tip anyway. But 10% on the drinks, when we sat in the bar, and when the place is actually a pub. That's 45p on every pint and 64p on a glass of wine, for a total of about five steps from the bar to the table. But what grates me is the first round I ordered at the bar and carried it to the table myself, but was still charged for my own service. This spoilt the night and I wouldn't go there again just out of principle. So I recommend when you want a drink, go to the bar and pay there.

Our Airbnb host described this as a 'hidden gem'. She was absolutely spot on. Superb food, good beers and wines, excellent service and a great setting made this our go to venue during our stay. Suggest you book early for weekend meals.

Second visit but this time had food. What a way to spend a Tuesday evening, service, food and atmosphere exceptional. Thank you all for making our evening special.

Passing by while travelling to Wales and stumbled across the village of Doynton. With the Cross House at the heart of it with what seems a somewhat ££££ refurb not too long ago with no detail spared, we were happy to find this spot! Camembert to begin which was devine, bearing in mind a few pints deep at this point, wolfed it down without breathing it feels! With the Flat Iron steak and Burger to follow. The Burger was up there with the better pub burgers I've had so can't loose there. The steak was also very tasty and cooked as requested, Medium - Rare. However did get a lil mouth workout chewing the thing, no complaints as was more the cut chosen over how it was cooked. All in all, a fantastic find and would recommend to anyone passing by or near the area.

Great pub with very friendly staff and good beer. Didn't eat this time but the food is very good too. They have done such a great job with the main dining room and outside areas overlooking the fields and church yard.

We've been here several times. Need to book early for a Sunday lunch, which says it all. Going again in a couple of weeks. If you're disabled and can't do stairs, you need to book a table in the bar area. Love it!

Me and my wife have been here a few times and there is nothing bad you can say about the place, food amazing, setting amazing, service amazing would go as far as saying its the nicest place I have ever eaten.

The food is sublime every time! The service is so professional, while making you feel that nothing is too much trouble, and at ease. Our go to place now

Fab food and ambience. Roaring fires in winter and lovely garden with views in summer. We go here for special occasions and love it. Most recently, we sampled the roast beef Sunday lunch. The beef was tasty and rare, as ordered and the accompanying veg and Yorkshire puddings were excellent. Nice wine list too with knowledgeable staff to explain its suppliers.

Great place. A little way out of Bristol but great place. We had a great meal.

In the areas around Bristol and Bath there are numerous very good eateries. There are several exceptional places to dine. With exception of the atmosphere being a little on the side of ‘freshly renovated and not yet aged gracefully’ we found The Cross House to be on that list of exceptional restaurants. On that list are the like of Lazy Lobster Chew Magna for seafood and the world class Pasture for steakhouse par excellence. The Cross House puts pub setting dining on a different level. Everything that passed our lips, including incredible selection of wines and beer, was truly mind blowingly great. This along with the others mentioned, stand out among the best we’ve experienced anywhere.

Booked the evening meal on line ticked box to note a wedding anniversary- nice touch on a booking system! Fantastic meal timely served with announcement "Happy Anniversary" from the waitress. Went on to order a dessert following a great sirloin steak and the desert came with a chocolate note written on the plate - Happy Anniversary!
