The Cross House in South Gloucestershire

Sunday Lunch, with friends. I regularly visited this lovely venue about 40 years ago when it was a watering hole for the local farming community. What a difference! It has a beautifully created rustic atmosphere, and we were seated in the large Conservatory at the rear, with its lovely view across fields to village Church. Service was excellent, as was the food. There is absolutely nothing I could fault. The venue was busy and deserved to be, but that detracted nothing from a great experience. Very well done.

The food was good,the staff friendly and attentive.However,we did not check our Bill carefully enough and duly settled..On returning home,i noticed a stealth tax of 10% had been added ........Sharp Practice,so we will not be returning

We've visited this pub now quite a few times and each time I'm sure the food gets better. The staff are really lovely, the menu is great and the quality of food is fantastic. What's not to like! Definitely worth a visit.

We visited for an extremely rare child free lunch, and really didn’t know what to expect as the meal was a gift from a relative. And what a gift it was! The pub itself is beautiful in a lovely quaint village, the sort of village that tourists would flock to if they knew about it. We had the fish and chips and a steak and both were cooked to absolute perfection and accompanied with great service too. We arrived at noon, and almost had the place to ourselves, although by the time we left the restaurant area was at a nice level of occupancy, but not too busy. I’ll tell you what, when I retire I want to go to this pub everyday, just to hang out, relax and maybe occasionally enjoy the lovely food too!

We came here as a family group for a birthday celebration. The service was fantastic and all of our food choices were delicious. Atmosphere was just right and the views were beautiful. We would definitely recommend this restaurant!

Went for dinner had a steak and a falafel burger, both were delicious with a lovely affogato to finish, excellent service and lovely atmosphere.

Have been many times to this popular pub during the past year and enjoyed the welcome and the food. However, a visit for lunch today was very disappointing. We ordered the burger. Presentation was good but the burger very disappointing. It was tough, rubbery and overcooked and definitely not up to the standard we have been used to. Sadly time to have a break from this usually lovely place for a while. Such a shame.

Lovely county pub. We used to visit, quite a while ago. We were so disappointed. The pub was cold. No roaring fire on a winters day. Had fish and chips. Fish appeared to have been cooked from frozen as watery. Because of the pub being cold the food went cold quickly. Maybe style over substance!!

Four neighbourly couples who meet every few months came last night. We had a great time . Service was friendly and the food interesting and tasty. We had fish and chips, steak, pheasant pie plus delicious puddings to name a few. It was full and a touch noisy but that is mainly due to hard surfaces. We have been before and will come again.

We had the most delicious lunch at The Cross House having been told how good it is. We eat out a lot and this is one of the best places we have ever been to. The décor is stylish and the staff were superb. We had the guinea fowl, lamb and the sharing beef and the food was incredible - piping hot, tasty and just excellent. We could not fault it and very much look forward to a return visit.

Back again so must be good ' though was a tiny bit off the excellence we had experienced previously. I got the impression they hd either over overbooked for the kitchen's capability or maybe they were a "man down" in the kitchen.The twist on Welsh rarebit was lovely, as was the confit duck which turned out to be a fairly small meal, at least a second potato fondant please! Calves liver was not the best of slices and the waiting time was too long when you are a twosome at table. Bigger parties keep themselves more entertained if they are kept waiting and are less aware of the time passing!

This little pub is immaculate with great food. When we visited we sat in the bar and one of us had pork, the other had the veggie option - both delicious and beautifully presented - see pics. Also best chips I have had in a long time. There is a lovely dining room and equally immaculate garden; we will definitely be back here.

We went for lunch after a long morning walk, absolutely fab, great service, wonderful food and 2 pints of Bass. We’re going again!

It's a fact that one can often tell within a minute of entering a venue for the first time whether it's going to be wall-to-wall amateur hour, or a slick, professional experience. The Cross House is certainly in the latter category. The place is absolutely immaculate, having patently enjoyed significant investment from the owners, who know precisely what they're doing. The front bar, in the original (and I would imagine, listed) building has been renovated to within an inch of its life, but it's a very nice space. There's an extension at the rear, with a vaulted ceiling and also tastefully done. That opens up to the equally immaculate garden. If "immaculate" seems to be the theme, then it also extends to the food. The sort of menu from which I want everything, I plumped for the Parma wrapped pork loin, pommes anna, black pudding bon-bon, greens and mustard sauce. It was nicely presented, with a hefty portion of pork cooked to a perfect pink. More sauce would have been welcome. £20, which is a bargain given how much you can pay for a pub burger or bought-in pie in Bath. He went veggie as usual, with a roasted aubergine dish that even attracted a dedicated carnivore like me. A side dish of perfect double cooked, homemade chips accompanied. They have decent beer, and Orchard Thieves to save us from the dreaded Thatchers Gold. Not only will we be back, but will take guests when they are staying with us. Just wish I could have a proper drink and walk home! The residents of Doynton are truly blessed to have this as their local.
