As so many reviews testify ‘Shoal’ has to be the best fish and chip restaurant we have ever experienced. Nicely designed, clean and comfortable restaurant setting or takeaway the choice is yours. In the restaurant all the staff are friendly, chatty in a good way and helpful - after we had finished we were asked “Do you want the bill or to chill?” which is an absolute first: in so many places the bill would have appeared as a means to get us out of the door and free up the table. Food? Perfectly cooked haddock in light batter, ‘proper’ chips, minted peas and good tartare sauce. We weren’t drinking but short wine list is good by the bottle or reasonably priced glass. There are no shortage of places to eat in Winchester and ‘Shoal’ is deservedly one of the best.

Totally surprising place making delicious alcohol-free cocktails with extremely researched ingredients, the vast majority of them locally sourced if not self-grown. The place is like an intimate garden; the scent the choose to diffuse is relaxing and interesting. The owners are charming and welcoming, as we entered they gave us a tasting tour of their specialties!

Stopped here for a tasty lunch. Nice menu range. Had a chicken salad bowl which was tasty and packed with fresh ingredients. Seating inside and out. Will definitely return when next in Winchester.

We've ordered a takeaway from this restaurant 3 times. The first time it was ok, the second time it was really good, but the third time will ensure we never order from here again. The pork in the sui mai dumplings was completely raw and the chow mein noodles had no flavour, despite opting for spice. The spring rolls were also soggy. But mainly it was the raw meat... 🤢

There's quite a few options for coffee in Winchester, the usual "High street" chains and a few independent specialty Cafes and bakery-type establishments. Just away from the main drag and off The Square (near the Cathedral) this place was a nice surprise. Sadly I only had time to visit for coffee (the food menu looked really good) but can certainly recommend. Really friendly greeting from the staff, I got a nice seat with a view across to the Cathedral whilst lot's of other patrons took advantage of outdoor seating on a sunny day. Order taken efficiently, the coffee was excellent and the atmosphere inside and out was really pleasant. I will certainly visit again!

This cafe is always so delightful with its quaint style of making you feel in the South of France ! Sitting outside the staff were attentive polite and smiles all round. Lovely hot coffee and eggs nothing better on a Friday morning. Not rushed like I have been in other places in Winchester ! Do visit, the staff, the ambience and quality of food make it a pleasant cafe in the heart of Winchester

We were visiting Winchester for the weekend and fancied a roast lunch. We were a group of five and found this place online that had good reviews. It was a short walk from the centre of the city, but it was so worth the extra steps. We found a beautiful little pub with loads of character, and had one of the best roast dinners that we have all had in a very long while. Between us we had the beef, pork and chicken , all of which were beautifully cooked, with the most perfect roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings, and really flavoursome vegetables. The roasted parsnips and carrots were particularly good. And the gravy you could quite easily have drink from a mug, it was that delicious. After all that we thought dessert might be a bit of a let-down, but quite the opposite. The orange marmalade bakewell tart (yes you've read that right) was amazing. Beautifully thin, short pastry and the tartness of the marmalade balanced so well with the sweetness of the frangipane and the (nicely thick) chantilly cream. And to top it all the service was really friendly and attentive. We all agreed that, if this was your local, you would never go anywhere else.

Still Maintaining the very good standards of service and quality of food after many visits Very good for breakfast. 0900hrs opening reinstated for Sunday Consistent excellent service and quality for all our visits. Staff always make us very welcome. Breakfast on a Sunday has been a regular event with members of our family COVID put a stop to that for awhile, but very happy to return once again. One large screen tv, also a number of tables have individual screens 13A sockets and usb charging points. These tables can be reserved . This should be one of the best places to watch televised sport. A very good menu with a wide selection of snacks and meals available. Service and quality of food was excellent as usual. Now a few more customers at breakfast on Sunday

Came here on a weekday lunchtime. It wasn’t very busy as we arrived at 12pm. The food was lovely, great vegan pizza. Unfortunately the service let the place down. The waiter looked like he wanted to be anywhere else but there. It took a long time for our bill to be presented to us when we really needed to leave. I would still return, for the food alone. But wouldn’t make plans to be anywhere quickly afterwards!

Decided to eat a late light lunch here when after visited Winchester Cathedral on an away day. A walk from the cathedral its was near the bus stop for the Park and Ride bus to get us back to our car. We had eaten at the Horsham branch of Chococo before, so knew that we would find something suitable on the menu. Not wanting a large meal, we settled upon a cheese toast and a cheese and marmite scone (with butter) along with a coffee and a mocha (both with the welcome choice of oat milk). The staff were both charming and efficient and they brought the meal to the table for us, (you order at the counter). You can select the percentage of dark chocolate in your Mocha, which made a nice change. There is a large array of chocolates to buy on offer, and a choice of Gelato ice creams as well.
