Cafe Monde in Winchester

I had not visited in a while. With so many new eating establishments in Winch now days I was reluctant to go back to my all time reliable Monde! I’m so glad I did though! Such a warm welcome! Nothing too much trouble for Phil and his team. The place felt warm, friendly and absolutely timeless. Just love Monde, its food, service and ambience are what will keep me coming back.

Terrible experience. The outside table next to us sat a woman with a small dog in a pram. The dog was whimpering so she took it out and put it on the ground. At this point we had finished our meal I got up to go and use the ladies came back to our table, picked up my canvas tote back that been on the floor next me and it was wet. A clear stream of fresh dog pee had run from her table to ours. My bag was wet and it’s contents including a velour cosmetics bag for my granddaughter that I had just bought in Oliver bones. She completely denied it was her dog..I should not have put my bag on the floor etc etc. The staff did nothing absolutely nothing, they could see I was really upset. They all retreated inside and. Did not want to deal with the situation at all. It was appalling.they stood inside and watched this woman argue with that the dog and not weed and it was my fault. One member of staff then did come and said I could take the little bag home and put it in the washing machine as it stank of dog wee!!If I could give the staff a minus score on how to deal with customers then I would do so. I am a dog owner and I know that these things happen but this was such unacceptable behaviour and so outrageously wrong and the staff so incomplete and unsympathetic to my situation I only wish that I could advertise this story more publicly as it was and still is upsetting.

this was a great cafe, busy meant super fresh food- menu simple but with so many options to suit us all. service was great and food was delicious- price was on point

Popped into to this lovely cafe last weekend on a trip to Winchester. I had an omelette with ham and mushroom which was lovely - hubby had a checked wrap equally tasty. Lovely kind staff and management. We were served by Tallulah among others - they were all absolutely lovely and we will definitely visit again. Fantastic gem of a place

Visited today, as the omelette looked very tasty, however I ordered cheese and onion omelette £8.25 and it wasn't anything to shout about cheese was mild cheddar so no taste when they should be using mature cheddar couldn't really taste the onions, also ordered a can of Coke at £1.50 which was priced on the fridge inside, not a problem on that price, but when I came to pay they tried to charge me £2.50 a £1.00 extra for the Coke just to be sat at a breakfast bar on an uncomfortable metal stool, I sat there as outside was busy, then the attitude of the young blonde girl serving totally unprofessional when I told her I would not pay the extra pound to sit in just to drink a can of Coke, she said in a very rude tone are you going to pay £10.75 or not as that is the price, I said I'll give you £10 and no more, which she took and put in the till slamming it, I guess that's the problem when you employ young people. Would of visited again to try something different but won't even bother now.

I simply love love love this cafe. The breakfasts are seriously the best in town and the biker fix (pre 11 comes with tea/coffee) is an absolute bargain. Always efficient, welcoming and accommodating this is independent hospitality at its absolute best! My only ‘complaint’ is that it isn’t open longer hours but then again maybe that’s why they can keep the standard so high and the staff in good spirits!!! Support Cafe Monde and keep it going forever!

Beyond shabby chic it looked a bit run down. Friendly fast service though. My wife had toast, avocado and eggs. 5/5 My full English was ok but only 3/5.

Stopped midafternoon for a late lunch sandwich and cup of tea. The sandwich/wrap were both very good, the service was very friendly and efficient and I have to say the prices were very reasonable compared to the place next door!

Popular cafe who do an excellent cooked breakfast.Visited before going to the Christmas market and we were greeted by friendly staff. If you are not hungry beware as the large breakfast will fill you up. We'll worth a visit.

I live up north, but first visited Cafe Monde when they had one in Salisbury too, some years ago, then discovered them also in Winchester. A busy spot, but they'll try to fit you in without rushing people from their tables. Good traditional cafe with a modern outlook, staff go in on their day off, manager is easygoing but makes sure things are right, comfortable and relaxed. Only please we could find that did a fry up! Was really lovely and the portion (all day breakfast) was really big. Lots of stairs so not really any good for mobility issues unless you can get a seat outside. Would definitely visit again.

I love this little cafe. It’s the place I head to when I visit Winchester. I’ve been here a million times. I had poached eggs and coffee yesterday. Beautiful!!

Stopped for breakfast, ordered two coffees and two poached eggs with bacon on the side. The bacon cost 1.75 extra. The smallest piece of bacon arrived. The poached eggs were hard over cooked bullets, bread was cheap supermarket brand and the coffee was dreadful. How one can stuff up Poached eggs is beyond me and the bacon was a laugh. Walk on, heaps of better places.

This cafe is in a good location, just off the high street on the way to the cathedral. The staff were all helpful and friendly. We were meeting a couple of friends for breakfast one Saturday. It was a sunny morning but there was too much of a cold wind to sit outside, so we were shown to the upstairs seating area. We found it rather basic. There were only two tables that would accommodate the four of us: one was right by the staircase and the other a sort of bay around a round table, which we opted for. Unfortunately it was a bit of a struggle to get all our plates of food on this table, but we managed. Sadly the breakfasts didn’t score many points: the fried eggs had runny whites, the bacon was undercooked, the tomatoes tasted quite weird, the sausages seemed to be of a cheap variety, as was the bread. The baked beans and mushrooms were fine. This was what spoiled it for us.

Great! Been eating here for 20 years and the Breakfast Omelette is to die for. The location is great being situated between the main drag of Winchester and the cathedral. Late morning when the sun peaks into view is a must. Can't wait to visit Winchester and Cafe Monde soon.

Spot on English breakfast. Made me realize how much I miss home. Pulled us in from the cold and sat us upstairs in the warmth with great table service. Very attentive to the family and our needs.

We visit cafe on a regular basis, perhaps once a month. Normally at lunchtime (11.30 - 12.00) always manage to get a table fairly quickly and the service from the staff is very efficient.

We sat upstairs in Cafe Monde and had a decent quality and cheap lunch. Service was good and friendly. They seemed to be quite accommodating when other local cafes were full.

Always chose to have brunch here when in Winchester because it always delivers. Choosing to sit outside we watched the world go by this morning as we ate our cooked breakfast (me) and scrambled eggs with salmon (the boss). Portions are reasonable but it's about the quality and presentation of the food which is always excellent whenever we eat here.

A day trip To Winchester and we visited Cafemonde for a latte and bite to eat. Located up a side street away from the busy Main Street but not secluded enough to feel isolated. We sat outside as we had our small Shih Tzu. Pleasantly surprised alwhen given a menu, healthy and not expensive at all. We chose the chicken club baguette and the salmon fish cake. Both were lovely. The side salad was cold and fresh, the dressing a delight and the sweet chilli sauce pot just right. The latte was perfect, great temperature and a lovely taste. The staff were outstanding and offered water for our dog. We will definitely come back when we return to Winchester, these little gems are hard to find.

Service was fine but a little perfunctory. Breakfast was adequate but I've had much better for the same price. For example carluccios which was friendly and excellent quality and service. Coffee was good. We benefitted from 50% discount which softened the blow. Pret a manger and wagamamma were both tasty and really enjoyable

Cafe Monde is our number 1 place to eat when were shopping in Winchester, we always get a warm receprtion from the staff, i had the crock madame and coffee, delicious, great quirky building, highly recommended

Call in here for brunch or an afternoon coffee nearly everyday during our visits to Winchester. Staff always friendly, the guy behind the counter especially so. Can get very busy at peak times but the service is always very quick. Great range of well prepared and tasty food and drinks. Highly recommended.

Great little cafe with a varied menu for breakfast and lunch. Breakfast was delicious, as was the panini for lunch.... Has a downstairs and upstairs. Small and quirk and reasonably priced. Not very warm upstairs as had windows open in kitchen but it is January after all. Service is quick too... Can recommend over trendy cafes.

Located in the square about 100 metres from Winchester cathedral is Cafemonde. The ground floor has both inside and outside seating, further seating is located upstairs and the toilets are located after a hike to the second floor.Staff are very friendly and engaging. Large menu, broad base options from a full English to gluten free. Finally, the pricing is very good. We will be back!!!

I don't think I have ever been into a cafe and had a member of the team open the door and give one of the friendlies welcome' s ever and it was done every time the door opened. I had been shopping and realised not having to move as th give table service. Good to see filters coffee as an option and fabulous tea cake with the lashings of great butter. Loved the blend of the place feeling comfortable and relaxed with plain China and great service. I will be going back next time I am in Winchester. It's based down the little alleyway near the clock.

Excellent value. Loads of options for lunch for £6-7. Anything can be made Gluten free except for their sausages. Several vegetarian options too including the excellent falafel ciabatta. Tables are packed in so maybe not the best choice if you want a private conversation.

We took the children here after they had been ice skating on the Cathedral Ice Rink. Friendly helpful staff with excellent hot chocolate topped with whipped cream - the children really enjoyed it!

We’re visiting for the Christmas Fayre wanting lunch but city centre very busy.Came across this extremely friendly cafe. Not noticed it before, tucked in between other food outlets. Staff very friendly, efficient and attentive. Like everywhere that day it was busy, but this did not distract the staff, who maintained a friendly efficient service. Good choice for lunch; food and drink excellent. Busy cheerful atmosphere. Its well worth remembering for a lunch stop.

This cafe is new to us and although we were only in for drinks the menu looked good with something for everyone. Small location. Busy. Efficient, friendly service. Pay downstairs on leaving. Will return when next in Winchester.

Very good value... Soup and a sandwich for £7! I had tomato and basil but pea and mint was also on offer together with any sandwich from their selection. Excellent value, especially for Winchester. We just happened to be walking past this little tea room when we saw some had ordered some hot chocolates that looked amazing. We decided to try them out and we are so glad we did because they were beautiful. Lots of whipped cream and marshmallows, not too rich the chocolate wasnt but absolutely lovely to drink, will definitely be returning.

This is my go to cafe in Winchester. It's seen off a number of establishments by offering sensibly priced food in nice surroundings. Staff are friendly and seem to be happy in their work. The coffee (particularly the espresso is excellent) while the food (for me always the omelette) is well presented, hot and tasty.

I visited on a sunny day and everyone was sitting outside. It was very busy and tables were close together but spacious enough for meals. At times staff were moving single diners to accommodate newcoming groups but no one seemed to mind. I had a nice salad and soft drink. The toilet (unisex) was downstairs although there was a dining room upstairs which I didn't see. Staff stood by the door and were serving and being alert most of the time but it was rather uneven service - I had to wait a long time before I got my bill. However overall staff were friendly, relaxed and happy to help when they noticed I needed something. Would recommend.

I was very pleased to have chosen this place to have a bite to eat, the staff were all very friendly and the food was amazing, especially the English breakfast. Loved the decor too, especially the retro radios. Will definitely be visiting again.

We dived in to this cafe for a quick pit stop. Lovely coffee and delicious muffin. The service was first class and we are glad we opted for this cafe out of what seems to be hundreds in Winchester!

Honestly just my fave- the milkshakes are Peng and food so yum. Highly recommend. Yes it's a bit of money but it's Winchester what do You expect ahaha

Had a breakfast omelette which was very nice and very filling. My friend had a baked potato which also was very nice although beware any filling is charged extra. The music was to loud for me. The waiter was very nice and service was quick.

This cafe is the best, the food is amazing the service is exceptional. All for a decent prices for paired with idyllic scenery. I cannot rate this enough. Definitely worth a visit when you’re in Winchester.

We sat upstairs and watched the street. Great breakfast menu from healthy to unhealthy! The Full English is perfect. Friendly personal service. Great location in Winchester and close to shopping and history. We would certainly go back when we return to Winchester.

Went in with a friend needed a proper breakfast said to my mate the last time I ate here the breakfast was like warm! Guess what same again it came out quickly so the bacon was pre cooked on the side no doubt the plate was cold the bacon was not even warm no heat in the food I’m afraid so I asked them to reheat it . To be honest it was hardly better the second time. £12 coffee and breakfast terribly over priced in my opinion. Last time I go there place is not clean either desperately needs revamping. Sorry cafe monde not cutting it with me . Best breakfast in town is Greens wine bar. Red hot plate fresh cooked every time £10 with a hot pot of tea

Was visiting Winchester on a cold Saturday and needed somewhere to eat. Just off the cathedral square are several small eateries and Cafemonde seemed to be doing a good trade judging by the number tables occupied outside.

Stopped in Winchester on the way to Southampton looking for a gluten free lunch. Thought I was going to have to get a takeaway sandwich from M&S; but luckily stumbled across this place. Great options for coeliacs. Gluten free sandwiches, omelettes, jacket potatoes and salads. I ordered a delicious gluten free chicken and avocado sandwich. They even made me a fresh salad dressing because their usual dressing had gluten in! Amazing service and lovely atmosphere.

Went to Cafemonde for lunch for the first time this January. It's a small cafe and is well decorated and laid out. The menu was full of appealing choices for lunch. We chose a spicy soup which was really tasty and had an avocado and chicken based sandwich as well. The avocado was perfectly ripe,with real chicken (not pre-formed meat!) and corn chips and salad on the side. Portions are a good size and the prices are all good value. All the staff are friendly and attentive.

Having been here previously on visits to Winchester, thought we would have breakfast there before the Christmas market. I have to say, it was probably the best breakfast I have had out. The all day breakfast was generously sized and of superb quality. Everything was cooked and presented excellently, and there was nothing I could fault with it. My wife enjoyed her breakfast omelette too. Will definitely return for breakfast soon! Service was excellent as well.

Had breakfast in this lovely cafe 2 mornings in a row! Highlights included perfectly runny poached eggs and the breakfast ciabatta. The tables are quite tightly packed in so not one to visit with lots of shopping bags! Will definitely go back

We’ve been coming for years and it’s always been the best in winchester. Great early bird prices and smooth coffee. We have a dog now and usually sit outside. Really friendly staff A*

Visited for the first time a few weeks ago and had a very good breakfast in a quirky location. Decided to return a week later on a Saturday morning, what a mistake that was the breakfast arrived cold with a missing sausage on each breakfast, advised the waiter who instead of taking our breakfast away, came back with two sausages 5 minutes later. To make matters worse the egg was not cooked properly. When we went to pay and mentioned it to the cashier about it being cold and not cooked properly,they just shrugged their shoulders.

Do not be put off by the apparently small frontage of this very nice cafe. As well as the external tables and chairs their is a 'snug' upstairs and a slightly larger cellar area with a surprising amount of seating. The service is alway very courteous, friendly and prompt and there is a great range of coffees, teas and food for all palletes and tastes. Centrally located for all the shops, museums and visitor attractions, highly recommended.
