Samuel's Rest in Winchester

Im really not one to complain but the food was terrible. I ordered steak and ale pie and mash it came out with over cooked chips and a slice of meat pie. The pastry was not cooked but the dog food chunks did taste nice. Probably the worst pub meal I have had ever. And even worse it was £15. A school cook could do better. AVOID

A great sunday lunch, healthy portions, a good selection of vegetables and a well presented meal. I would fully recommend the experience to anyone. The staff were very friendly and accommodating too. Well worth a visit .

Had dinner with my partner on Saturday 31st August and enjoyed the experience due to the excellent food and pleasant manager/landlord, Alex. Made to feel welcome and a good range of beers to choose from. Shiraz was ok too. The Cauliflower and Stilton soup was delicious and served with crusty bread and butter. We both opted for the Salmon as a main and this was also well presented and tasty. For a Saturday night it was relatively quiet which suited us but perhaps the locals are missing out if they don't frequent their excellent local. Would recommend.

Great pub, great British food, great atmosphere

It was very quiet when I visited.

Terrible dinner, dry! £16 for dry chicken and some rice. Only a sorry, and no offer of a refund or replacement. Very disappointed....will never go there again

Met with 3 friends as salmon was on the Sunday lunch menu. Not being a fan of roast we egerly booked. On ordering we were told it wasn't available. Nor should it have been on the menu. We had a drink while we checked out other menus in the area being an Uncomfortable atmosphere and stares from some elderchap sat at the end of the bar we keenly left. Won't be back anytime soon.

We went to Samuels after Nikki and Sean left but I doubt we will return. It was always a lovely country pub serving excellent food. There was nothing wrong with the food this time but portions were small which wasn’t reflected in the price!! We were the only customers in there! Having been regulars for several years, the arrival of televisions for sport is not our idea of a country pub! It is worth noting that any reviews on here before July are for the previous landlady!

Oh dear, oh dear! What a shame, for a once respectable, welcoming country pub. Previous reviews on Trip Advisor were obviously written before the new 'management' came in. Those still lauding the place are clearly the few remaining friends of the individual now running the pub down. For the most part I would have agreed with previous reviews. Excellent food, good range of drinks - if a tad expensive for the area - and friendly staff. Unfortnately, I had heard from several local people that the new 'manager' had a 'reputation', leading many to move their patronage elsewhere. Not being one to be influenced by others, and preferring to form my own opinion, I chose to pop in last night on my way home. 2225 at night - pulled into a parking spot opposite the pub, and was conscious of a person, who I believe to be the manager, stood by the front window just staring, malevolently in my direction. I ventured into the pub. No words of welcome, no pleasantries, just the same threatening stare, from the same person, now behind the bar. On asking if they were still open, I received a curt "No". Again, no customer engagement, no dialogue, just rudeness! When I voiced surprise at this, seeing as the place was fully lit, doors were open and others, albeit only 2 or 3 that I could see, were still drinking, I was informed that - "I'm only open until these have finished". "What a shame" says I, as I turned to leave, only then to be advised to "be careful when you pull out, as you nearly hit my car just now!" I was flabbergasted. Nothing could be further from the truth, as he would have seen had he been in a better vantage point, other than in the pub staring out into a dark road! One of the most uncomfortable two minutes of my life! Completely at a loss at the total lack of customer engagement, common courtesy, recognition and respect for someone this 'manager'and Wadworths representative, had never met before. I would love to leave a future review on quality of good, range of drinks, pricing, staff engagement, atmosphere and ambience, but unfortunately, it looks like those who warned me of what to expect were correct. I'll never set foot in the place again. I caution you to consider taking similar avoidance. (Copied to Wadsworth)

Cracking pub, great stuff and a great place to stop for a pint or 3!

This pub/restaurant is now in the hands of a new landlord, who also has another venue in nearby Bishops Waltham. It probably goes without saying that the food quality and presentation will be first class. Very bright and airy feel to the bar area and super friendly staff. Highly recommended.

You have 5 weeks before two of the best if not the best hosts of a pub , you’re ever likely to come across leave for good. Not been here for a while now , but they always went above and beyond for a group of workers every Friday lunchtime, Bacon rolls on a Saturday and family get togethers as well . Sean and Nikki you will be so terribly missed . Thank you doesn’t seem enough really . X

Stayed at the New Place Hotel around the corner this pub MILES better lovely Wadsworth 6X and IPA. Excellent home cooked food I had lasagna both days! A pint and a meal under £20 the food lovely piping hot brilliant side salad. A bit of a 'blokey' pub if you know what I mean didn't bother me everyone friendly. Barman a sound young man

Staying locally and went here for dinner on 2nd November 2023. The sirloin steak was melt-in-the-mouth. Surroundings comfortable, staff friendly and attentive. Couldn't fault the service.

2nd visit to the local pub can highly recommend massive meals and of a very good quality very friendly owner well worth visiting

Frequently used this pub over the years - always been a warm welcome from all members of the staff and the locals. Food is always good and the portion sizes are enormous! Nice big open garden space with lots of seating in the sun. Pool table in the conservatory area and Jukebox has a good selection of music - yet to find something that isn't one there!

Such a lovely plate of food, I come to this pub regularly and the food is fantastic, such big portions and just like your Mum’s cooking. Great staff, nice atmosphere. So good that there’s a pool table and jukebox. Will be back!!!!

Doesn’t really seem like it’s a pub that sells food , they do have a menu and the food is really nice , but I seemed to be the only one eating it , I found it to be quite expensive for what it was , like the draft coke being £3.50 , and hunters chicken at £17 odd , portion size I can’t complain at , the guy behind the bar wasn’t overly friendly, I felt it’s a very much locals pub , but having a huge hotel just round the corner you would think they would be more welcoming in the chance of actually getting business of the back of them .

Enjoyed a lovely meal here. The staff were friendly and welcoming. There was a varied menu and my husband was delighted to see a number of vegetarian options. The portions were substantial. Overall the meals with a couple of drinks each proved very good value. A great find just a short walk from the hotel where we were staying that provided a good option to enjoy a pleasant meal without breaking the bank!

I think the kitchen was closing when we arrived but they pushed the boat out and served us a lovely meal with all the trimmings. I had the Steak and Kidney pie and I could not walk afterwards as I was stuffed. My wife had a huge Burger and chips and that too was extremely filling. Lovely friendly staff too. I had a couple of drinks whilst there and really enjoyed the experience.

I have nothing but praise for this place, the staff are very friendly and accommodating and the food quality and choice is beyond belief. We normally visit the area every couple of months and always end up at Sam’s for a midday meal and we have not been disappointed yet I thoroughly recommended it to anyone if you are in the area. The one thing that disappointed me this time was to hear that they are closing the kitchen so many times during the week due to lack of trade If I lived in the area I would eat there a could of times a week and definitely on a Sunday their roasts have to be seen to be believed. I hope all goes well for this Public House because I will definitely eat there when I visit the area next time.

we where staying at a hotel close by but the evening meals there were a bit limited and pricy so having done research found this pub a short walk away. wow what a find, prices were about right for the area ,portions were huge (could not finish the meal)great choice of meals, very pleasant owner made us feel very welcome . if staying close by will come hear again for a meal

Friendly staff, good food (including a surprising number of vegetarian options, including this beet goat cheese burger), and the place filled up with musicians and Irish dancing. Loved it.

stayed local and fancied a better choice of items to have for dinner. did some research and found this pub. so glad we did , prices are about right for the area. great choice huge meals you will not leave hungry very friendly owners well worth a visit

A real classic pub. Cosy and welcoming. Food is hearty and tasty. Portion sizes are huge.

If you're looking for delicious food , "BIG" portions .. & a warm welcome from a friendly couple who run this establishment .. then you'll definitely get all three here in Shedfield . Unbelievably , even though we only live a mere 15 min drive away , it was only the third time in a year .. since we moved to the local area .. that our feet had passed over the threshold here . This being something we will have to improve on in the future , as this place is a little Gem .. when it comes to great Pub grub . Not the biggest Pub , or the poshest .. but a journey back in time ( if your as old as me ) .. to the days of PROPER pubs . A time when you left a Pub with a warm glow of contentment , & not fleeced in pocket .. knowing you've just experienced old school hospitality . A special mention too for the staff , attentive .. & giving good service with a "smile" . So glad Nikki / Shaun , the Landlord/Lady .. decided to stay on here for another long spell . Their smashing Pub is a lesson to all businesses , on giving what all customers ever want ..... value for money !! . Look out for their brown sign on the road from Wickham to Waltham Chase , you will not be disappointed .. trust me .

First impression was not great.. Ate in the bar area next to the lav.. Food was beyond my expectations. Had a baguette, this thing was absolutely loaded with a generous helping of fries on the side. Would definitely go again.. 👍 Recommended

Warm welcome. Good beer selection, we had the dry neck Nice menu, lots of choice. We both had the beef lasagne, it was delicious and came with lots of salad. Very generous portion

We dropped in for an evening meal whilst staying at a local Hotel. The food was very good: I had the beef lasagne which could have fed two, and my husband chose the chili con carne. Unfortunately, he had a stomach upset and was unable to eat very much, but he said that what he had was very good. The pub is a lovely friendly local. We definitely recommend a visit for good food at a good price.

A lovely pub with excellent food

We had our Annual Family Christmas Get Together here on Saturday 21 January 2023. We had about 19 of us in the party and I can not fault the service one bit! The homecooked food was outstanding and the staff very welcoming. I would definitely recommend this warm and welcoming pub! 10/10

Nicki managed to jiggle bookings so that she could fit us in for a New Year's Day Roast. The food was amazing and plentiful. We visit often for food but never before for a roast. Will definitely be going again.

We visited Samuels Rest today after a recommendation from a friend. What a lovely, warm and welcoming pub with a great beer selection. Our food was traditional pub food and really well cooked with a very generous portion. The menu is packed so the hardest part is actually choosing what to have. If you want delicious food in a conventional pub get yourself down here.

We took friends for pre Christmas celebration. As always lovely home cooked food. Very varied menu with lots of choice and large portions. Really tasty steak and ale suet pudding with veg. Our friend said his ham ,egg and chips were superb. Lovely different choice of puddings.The landlady ,landlord and staff were friendly and helpful and made us feel welcome.

The staff here treat you with the up most respect as if you were family. The customer service is impeccable and they are always willing to help with any queries and questions you may be presented with. It is a wonderful environment and very family friendly. The food has amazing quality to value ratio and always manages to captivate your taste buds will definitely be returning as you can’t be unsatisfied when dining here

Went to the Sam’s Rest for road Sunday lunch. Have been several times and have had great food. The ham was slimy and not edible. Potato’s and parsnips rock solid. Suede not mashed. Carrots like rubber. Spoke to the boy behind the bar who said there was nothing he could do. Wanted to speak to manager. She came out her attitude was appalling. Said shouldn’t have had the parsnips anyways and the food was fine nothing she could do. Mr landlord was a lot more pleasant to speak to. On leaving the landlady said don’t come again in front of other customers. Very immature and unprofessional. Will not come again don’t worry.

This is a nice pub good old fashioned atmosphere, warm and welcoming, Had been warned a band was playing but fine with us. they take last booking for food at 19.30. had lovely old jukebox, toilets are lovely and clean and disabled toilet easy access. staff friendly and helpful just one young girl not seeming to want to chat but no problem. menu old styled pub food which is good and reasonably priced and the portions are big and hot so get value for money. Real ales on tap. This pub is a 5 minute walk from the New Place Hotel and just on the outskirts of Southampton, the drive there is lovely. Would definitely recommend and go back

It was great to be invited there for a wake for my nephew. My memories was many years ago when I visited playing darts. It was very welcoming and I'm sure I'm going to make more visits.
