I noticed Shoal when exploring Winchester's medieval streets for the first time. A smartly done up interior, nice lighting, and taps with draft beer caught my attention. The welcome was very warm and genuine – I can't remember the last time I had such an experience in a UK restaurant – and the friendly waitress seated me in a nice corner of the restaurant. On inspecting the menu more closely, I noticed that one's choice of fish comes with UNLIMITED chips! What's not to love about that – generosity at a restaurant in an age of small portions and stinginess. The food was superb, exactly as good fish and chips should be. A local bitter complemented things well. More than anything though, the good spirit and humour with which the waiting staff conducted proceedings was particularly cheering and left me in good spirits as I headed out into the cold, dark November evening. I would thoroughly recommend, and will visit again when next in the area.

I totally loved my perfectly cooked chips and scampi. Shoal’s packaging means that my take away remained crisp. This is so often not the case. TOP MARKS TO THE TEAM!

Evening was made difficult for staff by a horribly large table (kids wandering, lots of time taken to order extra bits and bobs, etc), but staff coped well under difficult circumstances, did their best to accomodate those who were hoping to book a table, and the food was delicious. Which is really the main thing. Gorgeous fish and chips, and a fine selection of gelato flavours.

First time visiting Shoal’s in Winchester. We sat at the counter because they were expecting a large party. We were able to speak to the chef Billy and ask a lot of questions before ordering our meal with Tara. It was great fun watching them prepare the meals. Tara stopped by frequently asking us if we were happy with our meals and what did we think of them. My husband totally enjoyed the rock salmon and I had the fish pie which was delicious. Friendly, busy restaurant but outstanding personal service.

Excellent restaurant. We met some family there and sat outside. Our server was Chris, the manager, and he was excellent. Very friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. We all ordered the fish and chips which were excellent! We felt the restaurant was fairly priced. They have a nice indoor seating area as well as patio space. We would all highly recommend Shoal anytime you are in Winchester. They also make their own gelato too. The Lemon Meringue was amazing!

Deliciously battered haddock and cod served with a smile by a charming Tara who could not have been more thoughtful or helpful especially as we had baby Emma with us. We had not booked but a table for found for us four, 8 month old Emma included, a high chair provided and we were made most welcome. Thank you.

Best fish and chips ever. Big portions and fair price. A small haddock would have been sold as a large elsewhere. Good value for money.

This used to be a very rare and therefore special place. A tea/coffee shop with the coffee made in a separate kitchen. There was also an ice cream machine in the attached anteroom. This meant that unlike every other coffee shop whether a chain or an independent it had a unique USP, somewhere to have a quiet drink, breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea where you could have a chat with a friend or family. Unfortunately that has changed. It now has an incredibly loud buzzing from the ice cream freezer and the noise of the coffees being made right in the main area. The food is still lovely, the staff are friendly and helpful but it is now a noisy place just like all the rest. What a real shame.

Most delicious chips, fish cake and mushy peas I’ve had for some time. Piping hot, crispy, freshly cooked. Simple, basic premises but friendly service and most importantly top class chips and food.
