I’ve always been a fan of pie and chips, but the standard of pie you get in some chippies these days is the same as you get from the supermarkets. But at Shoal I have found the pies to be fantastic. These are handmade, with lovely pastry. The chunks of meat in the beef pies are delicious. The waitress in the take away says they are made by Karolina on site. I’ve had to join the gym to counter the effects. The chips are brilliant as well. If you’re in Winchester and fancy pie and chips, Shoal is the place to go.

We were a large group of ladies booked for lunch after a tour of Winchester College. The tour ran over time and so The Shoal had just closed. The manager kindly reopened which meant all staff hadextend their shift to accommodate us. Jess, the waitress on our table was amazing. She was patient, kind and so efficient. Thankyou. We'll be back!! Sylvia

Visited Shoal today with my husband and friends. It was busy, but luckily we were seated straight away. The food was amazing, beautifully cooked and plentiful. My husband who is a big fish and chips fan said it was the best he'd had. What made it more special was the service and all the very friendly staff. Tara especially looked after us extremely well and made sure we had every we wanted. We will certainly be back to try more from the menu.

Family of four had a fine time here. Its a smarter setting than any fish and chip shop I have ever been to, very much a premium offering. Food quality was excellent, sides offerings were really good and service was also good. We all loved the gelato. Almost bang on £100 for four meals, with dessert and a drink each, which feels like a lot for a "fish supper" but this isnt your average chippy! Would recommend.

I totally loved my perfectly cooked chips and scampi. Shoal’s packaging means that my take away remained crisp. This is so often not the case. TOP MARKS TO THE TEAM!

Evening was made difficult for staff by a horribly large table (kids wandering, lots of time taken to order extra bits and bobs, etc), but staff coped well under difficult circumstances, did their best to accomodate those who were hoping to book a table, and the food was delicious. Which is really the main thing. Gorgeous fish and chips, and a fine selection of gelato flavours.

First time visiting Shoal’s in Winchester. We sat at the counter because they were expecting a large party. We were able to speak to the chef Billy and ask a lot of questions before ordering our meal with Tara. It was great fun watching them prepare the meals. Tara stopped by frequently asking us if we were happy with our meals and what did we think of them. My husband totally enjoyed the rock salmon and I had the fish pie which was delicious. Friendly, busy restaurant but outstanding personal service.

Excellent restaurant. We met some family there and sat outside. Our server was Chris, the manager, and he was excellent. Very friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. We all ordered the fish and chips which were excellent! We felt the restaurant was fairly priced. They have a nice indoor seating area as well as patio space. We would all highly recommend Shoal anytime you are in Winchester. They also make their own gelato too. The Lemon Meringue was amazing!

Deliciously battered haddock and cod served with a smile by a charming Tara who could not have been more thoughtful or helpful especially as we had baby Emma with us. We had not booked but a table for found for us four, 8 month old Emma included, a high chair provided and we were made most welcome. Thank you.

Wonderful cream tea. Lovely service. Scones were excellent. We went there due to recommendation of family and we weren't disappointed.

I don’t like to leave bad reviews but unfortunately in this case I need to as I hope the owner can see this and react upon accordingly. We were on our way home around 8:30pm and thought we’d have a nice sausage and chips for our dinner. How disappointed were we? From the outside the shop looks ok but once you get in the place is filled with smoke ( it was like the extraction wasn’t on?) so instead of waiting for our order inside we went out and came back in 5 mins later. The young lady that served us was pleasant but the other staff just looked as they were in a youth club and messing about. So we get home 10 mins later and eagerly want to tuck in and after the 8/9 layers of paper that wrapped them we had what we thought were generous portions of chips with our battered sausage. Well we were glad they were generous as the majority of them were stuck to the paper as they swimming in oil. Instantly from the first chip I thought that they had a peculiar taste and after a two more chips I had to put them in the bin! They had definitely been cooked in very old cooking oil as they had that bitterness to them. The battered sausage was like any other battered sausage so no complaints there.
