The best restaurants in Askham Eden North West

What a great experience we had this morning paddle boarding on Ulswater. The instructor was nothing short of superb and got us all up and enjoying the water really quickly. The equipment at this centre was also really high quality and we felt totally safe with the buoyancy aids provided. Our group was diverse - me a rotund 50 something to my 18 year old daughter and while the duration we stayed stood up may have varied we all managed it and enjoyed crossing the lake. In summary - this is a superb activity, great value for money and I highly recommend the experience to anyone else.

This was honestly one of the best meals we have ever had! We have eaten at several Michelin star restaurants over the years including 3 star ones and 1863 restaurant is equally as good if not better! We could not fault any of the dishes we ate and they were both beautifully presented and delicious! The waitresses were so attentive and friendly and made the whole experience perfect. We were celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary and we will remember this meal for a long time…..thank you so much!

An odd experience. The rooms and common areas are very thread-bare, dated, and sparsely furnished. The restaurant was probably one of the best meals I’ve ever had (53 years). The grounds are quite nice.

I was extremely shocked when I asked for a pot of hot water with my tea to be told I would have to pay £1 for extra hot water (I don’t have milk as drink my tea black). I have been to lots of cafes and never been charged for extra hot water .. in fact in the majority of cafes you are given a pot without asking. The waitress was so apologetic and admitted she was embarrassed having to tell customers. I feel it is totally unnecessary and next time I visit Pooley Bridge I’ll take my custom elsewhere.

Fantastic location, great food and friendly staff

I’ll come onto the food but experience ruined by the two landladies who seem to treat everyone except two locals with exasperation.. it’s almost like serving customers is a huge inconvenience to them, you walk in and there’s no welcome, it seems pulling a pint takes too much concentration to say hi. Instead of bringing a drink to our table (where we had ordered from) the landlady shouted over the bar and just left it there. I’ve had cheaper pints when I’m down in London too, extremely expensive. The pizzas are the saving grace, they are really good, interesting toppings and lovely dough used. Much better than the old menu!

Unfortunately the whole experience was very underwhelming.. food sub standard for the price.. caught staff talking about us after we had complained about our food.. chose our favourite wine £50 was not even very chilled.. seems the place is run by teenagers dropping and spilling things and not really bothered if we were satisfied or not.. steak no steak knife.. loos 🚻 dirty the list goes on.. good from far but far from good

Refused for drinks. Its January not busy, its been snowing and we are in the area and chose you. Table must be booked. No booking they won’t give you the time of day, Are you that busy seemed plenty of time chatting to each other and loads of seats inside. WARNING NO WALK INS. You can’t even drink At the bar. Can we go in the back garden ?? It’s closed. If your not happy go elsewhere in the village was the response. So we did. We spent over £200 with my family of four somewhere else. Only thing missing a Spit in my face. Your team Has a horrible manner and attitude what a shame wouldn’t recommend won’t return. Rethink your choice in Pooley bridge they don’t deserve our custom.

Had an evening meal with friends and we had a lovely meal-where they catered for veggies, gf as well as meat eaters! Friendly staff and a lovely atmosphere.

Fabulous meal,parked motorhome in carpark and stayed night,good dog walks nearby, friendly staff,wood burner in bar

Always a go to for our family whether it’s sit in or a takeaway. All fantastic homemade pub food! From the beef stew and chilli con carne to the chips, coleslaw and raspberry pavlova pudding! Not forgetting the proper whippy ice cream!!

This place is an absolute shambles, the boiler did not work leaving us without hot water and heating for the weekend, the place was filthy on arrival, all the crockery and pots and pans where dirty, When we told owner that the TV didn't work, he told us to buy one. I would not recommend this place until the owner has brought it up to standard. The advertised hot tub overlooks the neighbours house and gardens, and looks as if it was shoved in the only place it would fit.

We were staying at a cottage nearby for the summer and we're looking for a takeaway nearby. They had a good variety of vegan options which was a wonderful surprise and super friendly staff. Would definitely order from again.

Beautiful building. Amazing location & the food was so good. We had the Steak pie & fish and chips, which was really nice quality. 100% recommend x
