We stayed in pooley Bridge for 3 nights and managed to visit nearly every day, lol. Lovely place, an amazing outside area too with fantastic views, staff professional and friendly, baileys hot chocolate to die for. We only called in for hot drinks and cake, but we will definitely be back to try lunch or maybe even afternoon tea. Our dogs also loved the dog sausage

What a lovely find! We were on our way home from a holiday at Whinfell Forest and wanted somewhere to stop for lunch. After a quick internet search Granny Dowbekins came up. We parked up and we're pleasantly surprised by the stunning location, with the outside eating area overlooking the River Eamont. We were greeted by a friendly young man who found us a table inside. The menu has a really varied choice. There was 5 of us and we each had something different - a full English breakfast, a vegan breakfast, pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, jacket potato with tuna and salad and smashed avocado on toast. The portions sizes were large and the food really nicely presented. We really enjoyed our meals, they were so tasty! We were so full we weren't able to fit in any of the lovely cakes that were on display. All the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was great. I'd highly recommend Granny Dowbekins and if we're in the area again we'll definitely be visiting!

Visited for a late lunch on our way home from the lakes and what a great decision it was! The place has a lovely atmosphere, which is in part down to the plentiful and friendly staff. The food was really excellent too and portions generous. My lasagne was top notch! There is also a wide variety of lighter meals on offer and the cakes looked great too. I'd definately visit again!

Lunch today. Beautiful food. Pricey compared to Belfast but we enjoyed every bite. Food presentation was beautiful high five to whoever prepares and presents the salad and coleslaw. It was gorgeous. What most impressed me having worked in the food industry 20years ago was how impressive the staff here are. Like a well oiled machine. Everyone was busy and on the ball and I noticed them scanning the needs of the restaurant and customer at any spare moment. Credit to each and everyone of them. Such a lovely team. But also big credit to their supervisor who runs a tight and super well functioning team. I don’t think I have seen logistics like it as well before. That girl is one slick operator and she runs a brilliant team

I visited Granny Dowbekin's yesterday with my partner and a good friend. We had: 1. Granny's rarebit 2. Open cheese toastie with chicken and a side of chips 3. Fish and chips (gluten free option) 4. Hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows 5. Elderflower lemonade 6. The victoria sponge cake 7. The sticky toffee pudding Everything was great. We have nothing but praises for every single dish we tried, and I cannot wait to go back for more. I'm so quick to write this review because by God I cannot stop thinking about the sticky toffee pudding! I need more! I deserve more!! Do yourself a favour and try it.

We visited last year after a boat trip and walk back from Howtown. The vegan options were good, including at least 2 lunch options. Did another walk from Pooley Bridge on Saturday, and we were excited to eat there again. The only main meal option was the vegan breakfast. The lunch items from last year seem to have gone 😔 Didn't really want a breakfast for lunch, but that seemed to be the only option, according to our server. Sadly won't be returning on our next trip there.

Terrible breakfast small portions and terribly put together mostly tourists visit here so they treat you with no respect just fleece you with crap food . Ordered food and I wanted to change it but the miserable waiter said it’s ordered now and I cannot change it because the chef is now cooking it ….he just couldn’t be bothered to walk into the kitchen to ask for my change of food. Funny though if the chef was cooking it now why did it take half an hour for them to bring it to the table. Wouldn’t give this place one star but had to to get this posted on trip advisor

Attentive staff with realistic timescales on food and found a way to bring something for our hungry small person quickly too. Food was hearty and met the brief! We have visited twice in the last week. I have been previously on another holiday and was dreaming of the baked potato's here as I remembered them to be exceptional. I had the baked potato with cheese and coleslaw and it was as great as I remembered. Ample portion size, plenty of coleslaw and cheese and delightfully buttery. The coleslaw is obviously homemade and creamy and not the cheap sour coleslaw you get in some places and the potatoes are well cooked. My husband had a burger and he really enjoyed it and it was great value. I had carrot cake and he had the chocolate brownie with ice-cream. His brownie was really large and looked amazing and he seemed to really enjoy it. The carrot cake was moist and delicious. On the second visit we both had full breakfasts with cappuccino. He had the regular full breakfast and I had the vegetarian version. Both were very enjoyable. I do feel I'd have liked the tomato to have been cooked until it was a little softer and for there to have been more than one tomato as I am very partial to them. There were a generous amount of mushrooms. I'd have also liked another fried egg and rather than 2 veggie sausages, just 1 but that is my preference. The hash browns were good. Some fried onions wouldn't be unwelcome. The breakfast were still lovely and very enjoyable. Vegetarian breakfasts can be less filling so adding a little more can make it more filling. The drinks, cappuccino and hot chocolate are served and presented very well as well as tasting pleasant. Will happily visit Granny Dowbekins every time when in the area as its a great place to eat and very pleasant to eat inside or outside here. I dream about the jacket potatoes as they are that good.

Unfortunately for us it’s not the same as the traditional quirky place it once was. Why change a place that wonderfully worked.

Decided to stop here for bite to eat. Walked in via side entrance buy rudely greeted by staff telling us we needed to wait outside first and member of staff would take us to a table. It was cold wet and windy outside so not a great system to have in place as a means of welcoming customers. We were taken to the garden room via outside and into another entrance. Once seated by the waitress we were given menus. Whilst waiting I observed 3 sets of customers simply coming into the cafe and in the absence ofany staff presence, seating themselves at empty tables. Each was given the same treatment by staff, passively aggressively asking if they been given the table by a member of staff of whether they had in fact sat down of their own volition! One family were then told that it can cause arguments if people jump the queue! What kind of system is this? Who thought that treati g customers in this way and levelling accusations against them was a good idea? Since this was our experience and that of the 3 sets of other customers that I witnessed in our visit of 45 minutes, it could be safely assumed that this is a regular occurrence and as the waitress said, they weren’t even busy! Clearly getting customers to queue up outside at a sign that nobody reads isn’t working. It must be exhausting for staff having to repeatedly read the riot act to customers who Naively think they can simply walk into a cafe! (The arrogance of some people!) Having said that, once we were seated the waitress was very friendly and efficient and the food was good and reasonably priced and waiting time was minimal, but really, I will not be darkening their doorstep again if I see the “queue here” sign outside.

This is a place where you can stop for an all day breakfast, or a snack , lunchtime meal, even - pre booked - a special afternoon tea with prosecco. This was the first time I’ve visited Granny Dowbekins since it has changed hands. Previously staff were always friendly, accommodating & helpful. This time I went in with an elderly friend of mine hoping to have some lunch. As my friend struggles with her hearing we decided to sit at one end of the large table in the bay window away from the few occupied tables in the centre of the room. Plus it felt lighter and more airy for us. There would still have been plenty of room for another party of 2 or 4 people to sit at the other end if anyone else happened to come in and chose to, however Pooley Bridge was actually fairly quiet at that time. As we approached the table to sit down the male staff member by the name of Mel suddenly descended upon us and said quite abruptly “you cannot sit here, this table is too large for you” then he led us to a smaller table by the service counter and said “you can sit at this table”. He gave us no choice and no chance to speak to him to explain what our needs were as he just slapped the menus down on the table and walked away. I was so completely taken aback and shocked at his appalling customer service, plus I could see that my friend was visibly upset so I did not say anything back to him. We decided to leave and took our custom to The Crown Hotel where we were very warmly greeted and even though the restaurant area is much larger, it was actually far more cosy and warm inside than Granny Dowbekins. The layout of tables appears to have changed inside making it feel crowded plus felt cold and uninviting. I feel very sad that the atmosphere at GBs is not the same any more having frequented it for well over 10 years with no complaints.

Visited for lunch, under new management. Been visiting this place since it first opened. Menu now limited to what it use to be, Great food, but they have over charged for sm jug of custard & cream at £2.50 each to go with desserts. This should of been pointed out by waitresses before order was taken. As soon as we had finished our dessert waitress brought over card machine even though we had not finished our drinks. I'm a pastry chef by trade and know it does not cost this much to make a large jug of custard. Won't be back ever to be ripped off.

Disappointing compared with previous visits. Welcome lacked warmth. Have never been a big fan of being made to stand in line, waiting to be shown to a table. Question need in autumn and winter, other than half terms etc. But there was no queue so decided to go for brunch. However, staff need some training in customer service. No smile or welcome. 60s music playing through cheap, tinny sounding speakers is not what you visit such a place of beauty to listen to. Taken to a table and waited ten minutes in hope someone would then come and take our order. Lots of staff walking by, but noone came to speak with us, so we left. Will not choose when we next walk dog in the area. Owners need to ensure attention to first impressions is given and suggest to get rid of the music.

We’d walked past here a number of times and the gluten free options naturally caught my eye. Location wise, it’s great by the river and the new bridge. I choose probably my favourite lunch being ham egg and chips. The ham was lovely and moist...

Excellent quiche & salad - quiche also happened to be gluten free - sitting in the sun by the river. Staff well organised and attentive & despite a queue we hadn’t long to wait for a table. A very pleasant place to eat.

Eat here regularly and the food quality and service is always excellent. Lovely views of the new bridge and onto the water, with seating outside too if preferred. We’ll be back again soon!

The food as always was on top form and the service was fabulous. We are seasonal regulars and this place never disappoints. The cheese and chive scones are to die for, as well as their sandwiches. Great views too

I had the most perfect sausage and bacon roll this morning, my guilty pleasure when I‘m in town first thing It’s always freshly prepared by the loveliest staff. I confess I’ve never been at lunchtime, but I wish I had, the options look amazing .

Couldn't believe the selection of different coffees on offer for a cafetiere and so reasonably priced just like the delicious scones. All the advice about the area and where else to eat was extremely helpful. What a delightful friendly place!
