The staff was so helpful and couldn’t do enough and the food was lovely, home made, Ed had lasagne and steak pie, very good portions and good value for money

4 adults 2 children ate for dinner. We’d booked as we popped in earlier to look at the menu. This was a good move as the were turning walk ins away. One lady serving and taking orders,one guy doing bar and drinks. Took drinks order after 10 mins and food after 20 mins.30 mins for food to come ie not the quickest service but food was worth waiting for. Pie brilliant, huge gammon, good veggie burger. Kids food was good and freshly prepared. Overall a great meal, service a bit slow but the 2 staff didn’t stop . Probably could do with more staff but that’s a catch 22 in this day and age. I’d recommend this place , but make sure you book.

Firstly - the food was really lovely and tasty. The black pudding and the Brie starters were delicious. The steak pie was amazing - and they were happy to give extra gravy we requested. The crime brûlée and sticky toffee pudding was also delicious. However - have given it only 3 stars due to the service. We were seated quickly and drink order and food order taken quickly. We waited about 15 minutes for the starters which was fine, but the main meals did not arrive until 2045 which was over an hour after we finished the starters. We did mention the food was lovely but the wait for service was too long - to be told very defensively “well, we are very busy and the chef cooks everything from scratch”. There were only four tables including us there and no table had more than 6 people, so not that busy. Have been to other pubs where everything is cooked from scratch - and did not wait like this. It is a shame - because the food was good and all they need to do is improve the service to get 5 stars.

Lovely, medium price pub and restaurant, stunning views. Service efficient and friendly. Delicious food and the chef served our meals. Large group and everyone enjoyed their selection.

Shockingly bad service....turned up at 5pm on a Sunday to be told they weren't taking orders of food until a table of 14 arrived at 5.30 and they had all ordered their food. Don't bother coming here incase they happen to have another larger booking to prioritise over the relatively low paying smaller tables.

The overall experience was fantastic, there was a warm welcome and we were swiftly shown to a table in the dining area. The food was excellent, the steak and kidney pie was the best! Will definitely return when in the area.

We had a lovely meal served to us by Ellie who gave us a very warm welcome, served us delicious food and excellent service. Ellie was very friendly and bought our food and drinks to us speedily and always with a smile. Thank you. We will call again when in the area. Joanna.

Went at 7pm on a Friday night and was seated immediately. Food came quickly and the service was great! Food tasted brilliant! Would definitely visit again.

Dropped in for food and drink, what a hidden gem, highly recommend! Will defo revisit! The dogs loved it too!!

Visited over Easter weekend and were left wishing we hadn’t bothered. Lacking in customer service. Sat down and left 15 minutes with a promise of a drink order which did not happen. Food order eventually taken 20 minutes after being seated. Starter took 30 minutes to appear; a single dish to share shouldn’t take so long. Cumberland sausage decent and enjoyable, sadly the same was not true for the steak pie which was inedible. Both pastry and meat were hard and dry as though it had been held at temperature for too long. The waitress (possibly Ellie or Elle) was poor and would sooner sit and talk to her friends about how her partner sleeps on the sofa, than clear a table or offer drinks. When offering feedback on the steak pie and suggesting we were not happy to pay full price for this we were sworn at by one member of staff. Altogether would not waste our time again any time soon. The food was amazing and had amazing staff. I would definitely recommend we had the stake and ail pie scampi and lasagna .

The food tasted so raw and the food didn’t arrive until 2PM we ordered At 12:30AM I would not recommend this place unless you’re just stopping for a quick drink.

The food was exceptional and very reasonably priced. Whilst it wasn't without fault (asked for the flat iron steak and got a gammon steak) everything was rectified by the friendly staff. We will certainly be back. I hope you have a well deserved busy summer!

We’ve been here a few times over the years and it never fails to deliver. We always get good food here, decent sized portions that are reasonably priced. Friendly staff and quick service.

Ribeye was perfectly cooked as well as the vegetarian mushroom stroganoff, portions were greater than anticipated. Staff was courteous, friendly and efficient.

We went in on a Saturday afternoon and the place was empty, a sign we should have turned around and walked out. We got scampi and gammon and our toddler daughter had some of ours. The portion sizes are like kids meals, a handful of oven chips (no real chips in here) some peas with the scampi and egg and pineapple with the gammon, no veg, no salad just your bog standard wetherspoons style food (£12 each too!) I don’t mind paying that for a meal as long as I come out full whereas we were all still hungry after it, i actually wish i’d taken a photo now to show just how basic and small the meals were. That said the staff were pleasant enough and helpful and the place was clean. All I can say is the previous reviewers giving excellent reviews must either be easy pleased or friends of the owners.

Another excellent evening meal, happy helpful staff, superb food and good selection of items on a varied menu. Comfortable and just a truly good enjoyable all round restaurant. Well done we shall be back !

Having booked a table in advance and arriving a few minutes early, I asked for the Day's special - pie. After waiting 45 minutes I asked if everything was Ok, wondering why my food hadn't arrived yet.

We contacted the Sportsman Inn to book a table for the following day as we wanted somewhere to eat between business meetings. We were on a tight schedule but the staff ensured we received piping hot homemade food within 10 mins of ordering. The food was delicious and catered for my business partner who has Crohn's disease. The staff were very friendly and were very attentive. The Inn has a relaxed atmosphere and is very spacious with tables in the dining area as well as around the bar. I have to say it is the best lunch I have had in Cumbria and will definitely be going back. Would highly recommend. I was also able to access WiFi to help prepare for our business meeting.

Called in on the way back home for food- really pleased we did. Good food and friendly staff and the steak & ale pie is well worth a try. Would recommend this place.

used to eat here regularly but is not somewhere to recommend any more. Whole place is now very tired needs really good deep clean. Staff not really bothered spending more time on their phones and sitting around in the bar area talking. Food was reasonable and served quickly but did not enjoy due to horrid atmosphere.

We weren't able to get to the Sportsman until mid afternoon (about 3 pm) on Sunday and were half expecting that the roast lunch would be finished. Fortunately it wasn't and we had a lovely roast beef lunch at a very reasonable price. The staff were very friendly and helpful and it was a pleasant experience.

This Pub was right down the road from the Hotel and offered great English Food at decent prices. Their beer selection was better than the Hotel too!

Went for some lunch and the place was horrible, the staff were awful all sat around the table looking at their phones not bothered about the customers, the food was disgusting wouldn’t even give it to a dog, the chicken wasn’t even cooked, the veg was hard not cooked! and one of the staff a women kept looking over as we left out food and she was wasn’t bothered just went back in her phone. ordered more drinks and 15 minutes later they still weren’t here. We had to move tables cause the one we were on the chairs were covered in food! When we went to pay we told the women we didn’t eat the food but she still charged us £50 for the food we didn’t touch, she said she would nock the drinks off when we had already paid for them when we first came in!! Wouldn’t recommend worst place I have ever been to
