My husband and I visited this lovely pub on a Monday night. They serve a 2 course set menu for £25 including a drink which we’d seen about on the website before booking and were very interested to try. I had the beetroot skewers and haddock and my husband had sausages followed by sticky toffee pudding and we both really enjoyed everything. The portion sizes were really good for such a good value menu and we both liked the fact that the menu focused on sustainability and trying to reduce waste. Really cosy pub with a welcoming atmosphere and we’ll definitely be back to try their main menu.

We had a Sunday lunch for a large family group. We got a friendly welcome, service was excellent and the food was lovely. Every one of our group was happy with our choice of food, which included a good variety of dishes, in addition to the usual roast. Just one issue, which was a lack of any bread. This left our French family member astonished and the person who ordered soup more than a little surprised.

My husband and I had a lovely meal here in the summer so were looking forward to returning. We traveled from Pooley Bridge on a Tuesday evening and I’m sorry to say,we were so disappointed. Firstly, the dining room was cold. There wasn’t a single radiator switched on and although there is a wood burning stove in a chimney in the centre of the room we were seated at the side of the brick so couldn’t feel the warmth at all. Unfortunately I sat with my coat on most of the night. Now to the food. The menu is 2 courses from a reduced choice menu for £25 including a drink. The a la carte menu is not available, which we did not realise. We did struggle to make our choices but in the end, my husband chose the sausages and I chose the mushroom ragu. The food itself was tasty however I didn’t feel it was value for money-2 sausages,a few roast potatoes and some carrots? The desserts were lovely although small portions - again I didn’t feel we had value for money. We have eaten in lots of restaurants all over the world including Michelin star places so it isn’t that we minded paying. We just left feeling cold, hungry and just disappointed with the whole experience I’m sorry to say.

We visited the Highland Drove whilst staying in an Airbnb in the village. We went on a Monday evening and the menu was 2 courses and a drink for £25 ppl. The food was amazing, fabulous quality and very tasty. The portions weren't huge but it is definitely restaurant food rather than pub food. The menu changes daily(I think). I would highly recommend.

Found this pub by chance whilst on holiday in the area , I had booked online that afternoon and the pub did not disappoint. Was greeted by one of the owners Claire who owns the pub along side her husband Tom the chef . As you can see from the pictures the pub was cozy, and very welcoming. Lovely feel to the pub . Did not have to wait long to have our drinks order taken , we went on a Tuesday night they had a deal of two courses and a drink for £25 per person . Food was to a high standard , was well presented and arrived hot and freshly cooked . Great customer service from Claire , warm and friendly . Would definitely recommend this pub.

The Highland Drove is a remarkable local pub that is welcoming and engaging for all! The menu is marvelous especially when one considers sustainable dishes on offer such as coley; pan seared no less! The beers were both international and local; the local ales being excellent. The staff are warm, intelligent and attentive. Always an enjoyable experience; highly recommended!

We had high hopes based on the blurb on Tripadvisor and the reviews. The blurb had an emphasis on hospitality but we didn’t feel welcomed. There was no flexibility. We were shown to our table and asked if we could be seated by the window. No we couldn’t because all those tables were booked and had dogs etc etc. By the time we had finished and done, nobody had occupied the tables by the window. We ordered and it’s a set menu of two courses for £25 on a Monday & Tuesday which appears to be good value as it also includes a drink. What became clear is that it’s just repackaged Sunday leftovers. I had roast pork, a couple of squashed new potatoes and some carrots. Soup was delicious but came with two croutons and no bread. Husband asked if he could swap potatoes for chips- immediately told no- despite there being other items advertised on set menu with chips. Why couldn’t this be done? Is the food all portioned out ready to warm up in advance so they can’t deviate? No wholegrain mustard when we asked. Just all felt quite penny pinching, and unfriendly. We definitely didn’t feel the spirit of hospitality. This is a shame as the village is lovely and we live not far away so were hoping to find a new regular place to add to our local list. Perhaps the pie and burger nights or Sunday lunch is better- but on this experience, we won’t return. I imagine we will get an indignant reply as others have- but I want to say that we work in hospitality and we get the point about bad and good reviews- we believe in leaving both, and we do.

We are staying in Lazenby, and we're recommended a pub in Kirkoswald for food, but it doesn't serve food on Wednesdays, so we had a quick search and found The Highland Drove. Wednesdays or pie & burger night, and what an amazing treat. Food exceptional standard. My wife enjoyed the stake and goats cheese burger, and I had lamb, chorizo, and olive pie with truffle oil mash. We were both to full for pudding. Highly recommend very friendly staff and very dog friendly even in the restaurant. We will definitely call again when next in the area. Thank you

We had an absolutely wonderful couple of nights stay at the Highland Drove just over a week ago. A lovely old pub and restaurant in a beautiful village in the stunning Eden Valley. Having travelled about 6hrs from sleepy Suffolk we needed somewhere to decompress and enjoy some decent local food. The Highland Drove did not disappoint. Nestled behind the church this local country pub inside had a wonderful restored interior including the spacious dinning area. Stressed from our long journey the landladys warm welcome put us at ease. She showed us to our table which accommodated my wife's wheelchair and our Labrador superbly. We spoke with her at length as she is a fellow dog owner whilst admiring and commenting on the lovely resturant. Then the food; all local and to 'die' for - full of flavour, good to look at, and extremely reasonable. Our advice is if in the area do not miss The Highland Drove. You will not be disappointed. And yes we will be back..

Tucked away down a back street in a small village, we didn't expect five-star service and fine dining-level food at tHe Highland Drove. We also didn't expect such great tasting vegan dishes. But that's exaclty what we found. It's hard in most places to get plant-based food, but as well as some incredible meat dishes, there's a good few starters and plant-based mains. We chose chargrilled oyster mushrooms with a rich butterbean cassoulet, marinated courgettes and carrots, and divine lenttil, date and ras el hanout 'meatballs', served with a chunky veg pearl couscous. And they were both delightful. With a weekly changing menu, the kitchen team here are clearly passionate, thoughtful and know what they are doing. How refreshing to discover a place that while not vegan, really understands the nuances of plant-based eating, and goes the extra mile to deliver healthy fresh food with creativity and flair. My only complaint is that we live too far away to visit often. Oh, and a couple of the desserts were accidentally vegan, too!

Having eaten in here 2 nights in a row back in September, the food was absolutely delicious so we looked forward to returning on our current visit to the area. As previously experienced, the bar staff were very welcoming and friendly. We booked a table for 10/5/24. My husband & I ordered steak pie which was £16.50 each. Initially we both had to send it back because the pie was cold in the middle (a basic error which should never happen). When the plates returned the pie was warm but the chips & peas were now cool, making the large chips very stodgy & unpleasant. I proceeded to attempt to eat what I could but the meat was so chewy & fatty making it inedible for me. I left a large amount & When asked by the waitress if everything was ok, I told her about my issues & she said sorry about that & proceeded to bring us the full amount on the bill which we duly paid. We were really disappointed because our previous visit had been so good.

It was extremely hard to find as once you were in the village there were no signs what so ever and it was round the back of the village we and the other people we were meeting had been driving round and round to find it and both of us had to ask a local where it was so I feel that really needs addressing. The food was ok but would of liked the beef for Sunday lunch to be proper big slices of Beef rather than rib so lots of little pieces and the cabbage that was served with it was curried !!! Which was a little strange. The roast potatoes were very very crispy but tasty. My dessert however was lovely could of maybe had more sticky toffee sauce with the pudding.

We last visited this pub/restaurant several years ago but today we decided we would have a trip out from our home in Ambleside for a Sunday lunch. We booked a table and that was done easily on the phone. On arrival, we were greeted warmly and shown to our table. We ordered two starters ( curried black lentil soup and triple cooked chicken wings) both were served quickly and were delicious. We both opted for the braised short rib of beef plus vegetables. The plates were spectacular when they arrived with a generous portion of beef, large Yorkshire pudding and a great selection of vegetables cooked so that they were still fresh! All in all, a wonderful meal in very pleasant and welcoming surroundings. We will certainly return in the future because the food was well worth the trip.

Just had a family meal here this week. Cannot fault it in any way. The food was absolutely delicious, every one of our party enjoyed their meal and we ordered a good range of dishes from the menu. (The fish and chips are insanely good)....

We went for a family meal, the food was to die for. Especially the scotch egg starter and ham hock. The kids meals are good sized portions and value for money, my kids loved the fact they got the choice of different puds and not...

So pleased the highland drove has re opened and it definitely doesn’t disappoint. Our meal was great and even though the restaurant was fully booked they managed to squeeze us in. The chefs spiced scotch egg off the starter menu is a must try. Good...

When I pay £18 for fish and chips, I expect something REALLY good. The mushy peas qualified, the fish was okay but the “triple cooked” chips were an insipid mush such as I wouldn’t be happy with from the local chippie. Drinks menu limited, pub...

We recently stayed on a two night Travelzoo deal. The hotel is finished to a lovely stylish clean standard. The pub food was lovely, fresh and tasty. We did find it a little steeper price wise to what we are familiar with. The room was nicely finished and comfortable. The light did pour through the window when cars drove past at night and also under the door from the hallway which kept me awake. The radiator in the room was technical and it wouldn’t come on so we were happy to have an electric heater too. Breakfast was continental, it was nice but we felt it was missing some meat and maybe more exciting cheeses. The coffee was lovely. The staff were friendly and helpful but out of the three we dealt with we felt one of them wasn’t so professional and sincere. Shouting things to the kitchen before the door was closed and generally a bit rude. The check in /out times were a touch late/early. Otherwise well done Dukes head and travelzoo too.
