Absolutely incredible. Me and my wife have eaten a few times before. But last night was completely different. The food was out of this world. I had the trout tartare followed by the lobster and then the panacotta. Each dish was prepared perfectly and was a delight to eat. You will be foolish if you pass up the opportunity to eat here. Excellent service in a nice cozy pub like atmosphere. Cant complain at all

I've eaten here three times over last few months, twice in the evening for the three course posh pub dinner and once for Sunday lunch. Really enjoyed the food and atmosphere, both beef and lamb dishes excellent and have to give a mention to Sunday roast with fabulous Yorkshire pudding. There's some lovely walks around Askham, so appreciate you can take your dog. The staff team are friendly and helpful creating a lovely atmosphere. Would definitely recommend the food , when I eat out I like to have things that I couldn't make myself at home and it definitely is a bit special .

The pub itself is cozy and characterful, and has a cottage like charm. Staffed by young and friendly staff, the Sunday menu was limited to 3 options at a set price. £35 for 2 courses and £39 for 3 courses. Expensive, but we had high hopes given the pubs’ accolades and associations with other quality establishments locally. We opted for 2 courses and our children ordered from a limited choice children’s menu priced at £15 per child. Sourdough bread and homemade butter arrived moments after our order had been taken and all was initially positive. However, the main course arrived and the disappointment set in. Served on starter sized plates, the braised lamb was formed and resembled an overturned tin of tuna. The portion was meagre. Accompanied by the smallest ever roasted potatoes the plates looked sparse and underwhelming. The sides for the 3 adults were bland and uninspiring - BBQ cabbage was one - again they were minimal in quantity. The kids meals faired little better, equally dull and lacking. My mother in law opted for the fish and was presented with a single fillet of sea bass with a Yorkshire pudding and a mass of sauce. I ordered the Jam Roly-Poly for dessert hoping for something memorable but instead was served a heavily suet based pudding - chewy from being overcooked. The homemade custard that accompanied it was so thick that it had set in the serving jug. I was so disappointed. Overall, I felt overcharged and underwhelmed. Not somewhere I’d return or recommend.

Overall an expensive poorly cooked pretentious meal served in a pub. Probably the most uncomfortable window seat a good 4 inches too high and no way to get comfortable. People and dogs in bar. I booked a restaurant not pub grub Food. Pate was the best part. My husband had the beet salad. I would say not a £1 worth on his plate. He had the plaice which was well cooked and just ok. I had the lamb. A square cut of meat ? Undercooked raw fat on one side then we’ll overcooked on the other raw "crunchy pulses in a thin watery sauce. A deep fried cube of something and a luke warm overly sweet mint sauce. The greens well cooked. Followed by a bangvaverage treacle ginger tart Over all it was overpriced poorly cooked food at an uncomfortable seat in the bar. Certainly will not be recommending this to my house guests over the summer.

We ate a 3 course dinner at the Queen's Arms recently, having been given a voucher from a friend following our civil partnership last year. We just hadn't got round to spending the voucher: had we realised how fantastic the experience would be, we may well have booked sooner! We ate fairly early, around 6pm, which meant we had the pick of the tables in the restaurant area behind the bar. The food was fantastic - beautifully put together and so tasty - the wine was lovely and the service was first rate. I did ask one of the waiters why the place didn't yet have a Michelin star... We'll definitely be back!

Nothing like as good as last time we dined there. Firstly they served another table before us who arrived after us. They apologized and said it was a mix up in the kitchen and we had quite a wait to get our canapes. Service was very slow between courses too. The food was okay but my beef came in 2 pieces, 1 was medium rare and the second meltingly tender as if slow cooked - I wasn't asked how I liked it. Very disappointed , we will not be returning.

We were staying at Askham Hall who recommended dinner at their sister pub in the village. I had a quick look at the menu and it looked lovely. When we got there we realised they only offer a three course menu for £55. We said to the waitress that we only wanted two courses and were told they don’t offer that. We were told we could have two courses but would pay for 3! The young waitress even offered that she could bring a pudding and we could just look at it! Very disappointing. Welcome was very friendly and food was fine though not what we had expected as had been previously told there would be one or two exceptional dishes only.

Easily the worst bar meal that we have ever eaten. After seeing great reviews for this place we booked a table for 7:30. Having studied the rather limited menu we were told that two of the choice were not available, undeterred we placed our order and waited, and waited and waited some more...our starter arrived approximately an hour later. It was somewhat lacklustre, but passable compared to what was to come for our main meal. This took another hour to arrive, by which time we had all started to place bets on how long it was going to take and to make plans for a trip to McDonalds. Won't go into detail but suffice to say, all of us left at least a portion of our food and the halloumi 'burger' was literally strips of halloumi in a bread bun! The staff were pleasant but completely overwhelmed and obviously trying to do an impossible job. Possibly trying to cook as well as serving....surely the food we ate had not been prepared by a chef? To add insult to injury, we were not even offered a complimentary drink or reduced bill. We left feeling fleeced and will not be back!

The party of 4 who sat next to us were not impressed by the pricey 'too fancy' menu and as they had two vegetarians in their party, did just that. For me is was nice setting but reminded me of the vegetarian attitudes when I first became veggi 30 years ago - shame. I had the soup and cheese board as a main meal, as needs must.

Popped by for a quick bite to eat after seeing it was open again and under new management. The pub is cleaner than I have ever seen it and we have been coming here for a few years now. Everything in place and no mess what so ever which is lovely to see. Although the menu is limited the food is amazing, especially the burger. Every mouthful was to die for. My husband had the casserole which he said was also delicious but did need some potatoes with it just to bulk the dish out a little. The thing that made our visit was the lovely lady behind the bar (kelly I think her name was), greeting everyone with a smile both locals and visitors. Nothing was too much trouble for her even when she was busy and she made the effort to say hello and have a conversation with us which is very welcoming. We booked into the Queens at short notice for a lakeland getaway for 2 nights. It is halfway between Haweswater and Ullswater so a fantastic base for exploring the area. The pub has recently changed hands and the landlord Steve is doing a great job of looking after this lovely old building. Though I'm not normally a big fan of Jennings the Cumberland Ale was beautifully kept and went down a treat after each days walking. Steve is friendly and welcoming and really made our weekend as relaxing and enjoyable as possible making us feel at home and getting everyone in the pub talking to one another. The pub is still picking up its trade after a recent change of hands and closure but is well worth a visit. It is spotlessly clean and our room was immaculate. Go and visit for a base in a stunningly pretty village, help get this fantastic pub bustling again and best of all enjoy some well kept Cumbrian ale in warm and friendly surroundings! We had driven past this pub a few times and I've eaten here many years ago so thought we would give it a try. There weren't many people in the pub when we arrived but there were quite a few more when we left.We visited to have lunch and boy did it not disappoint. We went for the butchers block sharing platter and a side of halloumi and chips.Wow, so much food, we didn't realise! The butchers block consists of meats, cheeses, chutneys, pickles, chipolata sausages etc etc.I recommend this fully. The halloumi and hand cut chips were fab too.We had a half pint each of a local golden ale to wash it down and went on our way. Will definitely be visiting again as it looks a lovely place to visit when the fires are lit in the colder months...

We booked a table for 3 people one night after a walk past the annual Lowther show. One person in our group held quite a few allergens to her name, (Wheat, Dairy and eggs) so we had two ask for some alterations. They did this perfectly fine with only a little bit of 'faff'. To be honest, the price tag was quite large but well worth it. I recommend this pub come restaurant for anyone who is passing by ;)

Let me start by mentioning, I'm not a moaner. If you look at my previous reviews you will see I write nothing but glowing recommendations, im not usually one to write about bad service, however on this occasion I feel totally compelled. The drinks were good, food standard but cheap and the place had nice decor. It was quite an enjoyable experience until I received my dessert, I ordered the caramel shortbread with clotted cream. On my first mouthful of the clotted cream, I reached over for my serviette and spat it out - it tasted awful, too awful to swallow! Really really bitter and sour. So I knew it wasn't just me, I asked my partner to taste and she soon realised there was something wrong too, it also smelled like off milk/cream. We approached the lady at the bar and told her there was something wrong, the cream wasn't right - she grabbed the plate and walked into the back without saying a word. On her return, she came back with the same plate and food saying "me and the chef have both tried it and there's nothing wrong with it". I'm sorry but what kind of place allows staff to eat from other people's plates and then try's re-serving it to the customer?? Hygiene? Anyway, that wasn't all, she continued with "it's clotted cream, you must have just got a bad bit" REALLY? So aslong as 60% of it is alright then it's ok to serve? It wasn't just her words, it was her general stroppy attitude when it could have just been an easy "I'll swap it for you" or "would you like it replaced with anything else?". The chef needs words also, if he thinks it's ok to 1. Service off food 2. Eat from customers plates and then return it. Never again.

When you work away from home how nice it is to stay in such a nice place , but when the food is this good I wanted to stay longer. My starter was black pudding & haggis served with pickled beetroot. It was perfect considering this was my first ever taste of haggis aswell. It was so well presented with a perfectly cooked poached egg aswell on top.My main course was beef stroganoff which was so tender and tasty. All served with great manners and a friendly smile. I was so impressed I gave a £10 tip , it was so nice 10/10.

absolutely starved, stumbled upon this pub, it is a many roomed building, which is welcoming and comfortable. The food was not the cheapest but was of excellent quality and flavour. My non veggie/ veggie curry ( you can add chicken for a £1 and boy was it worth it) was really really good, pine nuts in the rice was really amazing, something I will try at home. Worth a visit, also they allow dogs and children

After our last visit and really enjoying the meal we decided to have lunch here. The manger behind the bar was unfriendly and it felt like we were a great inconvenience to him. I think he preferred to watch the live cricket he had on his laptop in the other bar than serve us. The veggie board was poor in comparison to the lovely one we had last time. A few old brown bits of lettuce, some cold but toasted bread, cold halloumi and far too much hummus for the little amount of bread. Also the £4.50 single cold halloumi skewer as an extra was again disappointing. It's a shame because the menu looks good and last time the service was great. Been really put off and next time will go somewhere else.

Returned last weekend for dinner with the family after visiting the pool again and a great experience, we were remembered after our last visit( rowdy kids !) but made more welcome by the bar staff , we tried some Tirol craft beers before buying them which the barman was only too happy for us to do and we ended off staying the whole evening ,they even provided us with torches for the walk home to the campsite.great food ,great beer and in a nutshell a great experience. Well done to you guys

Stayed at the Haweswater Hotel and Askham was the nearest alternative place (7.5 miles) where one could get a meal. Had an evening meal here with my partner after checking the place out in the day while driving past. The menu is basic but being developed and expanded but was home cooked and very tasty and not from acme catering supplies in a plastic bag. The chips were very nice and possibly cooked in dripping. The staff were friendly and apologised for the wait (15 mins), which I though was very quick as one had a broken arm. Good local beer. Missed the Sunday Roast as we were late back from a walk. Would go again if in the area.

Visited the Queens in Askham having seen the reviews. The landlord was friendly and made us feelvery welcome when we walked in. Tried a sample beer before having a pint of the local Tirrel beer brewed in Ulswater. Food is best described as good pub food, traditional and nicely presented. This pub is definitely worth a try and not to be confused with the Queens at Tirrel.

Called in for tea and had the sharing boards as they are not doing the full menu yet. The boards were very good money for value and tasted lovely. The service was friendly and welcoming. Also the new interior of the pub is great and just right for the type of building it is. Definitely will be going back when the full menu is running and I hope the pub does very well because it deserves to.

Seem to be new management/staff in place. The menu was new and the place has been fitted out very well. The village itself is stunning and well worth an hour of your time. The bar staff were friendly and efficient. The food excellent - try the scotch eggs. Very reasonably priced too.

Came across this pub by accident on the way to the lakes. We were served by very friendly staff in this traditional Hotel bar restaurant. Saw people eating what looked like very nice pies. Unfortunately the pie of the day was pork and sausage when my wife doesn't like pork. The waitress however said my wife could have a chicken pie and I ordered beef, Both were very good although a little heavy. A pity as I quite fancied a sticky toffee pudding, Maybe next time as we will certainly visit again.

We popped in here for Sunday Dinner after a wet walk in the Lakes, we were made to feel very welcome and the open fires and good service really help us to relax after a long wet day, the pub was quite busy at the time but we were still served a splendid meal, the portions were healthy and the home made Yorkshires went down a treat. The only criticism we could have made was that the carpet from the front door that ran to the second bar had seen better days, and that's with us being really picky as with it being a proper country pub it will get a lot of heavy use in winter months. Again a fab pub and we will call in again!

Whilst in Askham we ate once at the Punchbowl and once at the Queens Head. Both were OK, nothing special but OK, the Queens Head was the friendlier of the two - perhaps this is enough to tip the balance in their favour of pushed to express a preference.

Called in for lunch, I chose the tomato soup which was cold and tasted absolutely horrible. My daughter had the beef sandwich which consisted of two small bits of meat with some red onion, a few crisps on the side and some salad. It also took ages to arrive, my tea was actually cold by the time it was served. For £15 it was a total waste of money, not an enjoyable experience . Never again, in fact the chef should be replaced.
