Can’t quite put to words how awful this place has become! Such a shame as this time last year this pub was great! Disrespectful and rude manageress and rough looking man on bar almost made me walk out as soon as I walked in. Food rubbish and atmosphere abysmal. Stay away at all costs

Walked into the Sun then BOOM met by an arrogant rough looking lad behind the bar, then BOOM met with next to no beers available, all there was to do was change the kegs which was done by a pleasant young brunette, BOOM next thing was the price, it was like getting a pint from Chong wai in London, all of this after queuing out of the door for 20 blooming minutes. Ordered some food shortly after as I was hungy, BOOM awful service from some ginger boy, BOOM the food was cold and the steak and ale pie had 2 pieces of steak in and pastry was RANCID, will not be returning ever. BOOM

Had a last minute overnight stay at The Sun Inn, me hubby and our dog. Got a great deal for B & B. The room was plenty big enough with comfy bed, super clean, lovely soft towels, and very nice toiletries. The hotel was very quiet but the staff were all pleasant and attentive. Breakfast was very nice and tasty. Would highly recommend and we will certainly stay again. Thank you all.

Been today, the food was awful. Chicken Kebab, absolutely no idea what meat they served but it was not chicken, grey slime. Microwaved jacket potato , soup from a tin thst looked like something you bring back up. Chips were ok. Girl behind the bar was lovely and refunded the mystery meat kebab with no qualms .. Avoid

Having eaten here with delight for two previous Decembers when staying in Ullswater, this was by far the worst experience. The food was beyond tasteless, thinly-cut turkey like rubber, stuffing balls so hard they couldn’t be eaten, cold vege & all over shadowed by an over-sized Yorkshire pudding sitting on top of the plate. Served with a large (redundant) gravy bowl and no cranberry sauce. Got back to our hotel & had to take a Gaviscon to relieve bad stomach pains. I never suffer from any form of indigestion, so this can only be down to the quality of the food. Very disappointing that a previously good pub has gone downhill with the food. On the plus side, the staff were friendly & the atmosphere lively.

We came to a local campsite every year in our motorhome and always ate at the Sun. Having dispensed with said vehicle we decided to have a weekend away and chose the Sun Inn. It is by far the most traditional of the 3 'inns' in the village, and such a friendly and relaxed place. We were always almost last to go to bed at night. Hope that didn’t annoy the friendly (and no doubt very tired) staff who didnt make us feel awkward. A relaxed (and popular) bar area serving good food & drink, friendly & efficient staff and a fabulous breakfast to set you up for the day. We ate here each night too. . Decent room with all facilities. I always try and get something from the Specials board in restaurants and this was no exception. Thai Green curry with a choice of chicken or prawns sounded lovely so chose the chicken option. When it came (forgot to take photo) it was the most uninspiring plate of food I think I’ve ever seen. Sadly it didn’t taste very good either but the main issue was the chicken which had been sliced and was as dry and tough as leather. It was barely edible. We called the young waiter (who was very good and is the reason for a 2star review and not a 1star) we decided to get the steak and ale pie instead as one of the other couples had this and it looked nice. However it took ages to come and the other 4 couples we were with had long finished their meals. We then felt really pressured to finish as soon as possible as everyone else was waiting. When it did come the peas were rock hard and barely edible 🤦🏻‍♂️. When we got the bill I went to the bar to pay and even though it wasn’t that busy and the bar and there were 3 members of staff behind the bar it took me about 3-4mins to get their attention. All in all a very disappointing experience all round.

We stayed for three nights and had a meal each of those nights, followed by a cooked breakfast. The hotel itself is clean and the bedroom pleasant to stay in, and the bathroom completely modern and very satisfactory. The bedroom reflects the ambiance of the entire place, which is perfectly adequate but in need of a touch of TLC. The overall sense of the hotel is a place which is full of character. If there is an outstanding feature of the hotel, it is the staff that work in it. From the General Manager Rebecca to the bar staff, the hotel owners, the serving team at breakfast, there was nobody who was other than pleasant and willing to put themselves out. And Rebecca sets the scene for the rest of the staff, having gone above and beyond to assist us. Thank you for being an excellent base for a wonderful time in the Lakes.

Arrived in the bar at around 7.20pm on a Wednesday and my family and I waited to be seen to by someone. At around 7.25pm we were attended to. We said we were looking for a table for 3 for dinner and were told that they stopped taking orders for food at 7.30pm and so were summarily dismissed. No apology, no would you like to have a drink, the server just walked off. Unsurprisingly, we didn’t stay for a drink and won’t be eating here whilst we are here on our break either.

We ate at The Sun Inn one night on a recent break to Pooley Bridge. Despite it being very busy we manage to get a table. The staff were friendly, even though they were so busy. The food was fine, lamb shank and fish pie. We also ordered an apple crumble for dessert but had to send it back as it hadn't been warmed up before service, but that was soon dealt with.

My experience of the Sun Inn was as follows: - Staff helpful - Rooms clean and tidy - restaurant service poor (I waited an hour for food) - food quality poor (tough meat, cold veg) I’m staying here for another night but have booked elsewhere to avoid a repeat experience. I can’t recommend anywhere that delivers low standard service/food but perhaps this was an off day and I was just one guy

We come to The Sun Inn regularly, the food is always delicious and to an excellent standard, the staff are always very friendly, helpful and accommodating. There is a great relaxed atmospheric environment, a fantastic place to go for a beer and food after a day on the fells. Always very cosy with the open fires in there. There is a nice large beer garden which catches the sun all day in the summer time. I would recommend The Sun to anyone staying in Pooley Bridge.

My wife and I visited this place on a Thursday evening in April. We ordered a sharing dish as we weren’t that hungry. Initially, I commented that the price of the dish was a little expensive but the landlord later explained that it was a dish for 2 and also that the prices were in keeping with their local competitors. We found this to be correct. Indeed, food in this beautiful area is a more expensive than a lot of places but then so is everything else such as business rates, rents etc…. Even Ice Cream at the local shop is expensive. I guess the general high prices of everything (not just pub food and drink) in this beautiful area of the world is the trade off for the stunning scenery. With pleasant staff, fair management and nice surroundings we would recommend a visit to this pub.

Long wait on food. 45mins. Table was booked for 7pm never eaten here before so didn't know we had to order from the bar took a while to figure that out. Had to ask where food was 30mins after ordering to be told there's a backlog. Came 15mins later, had to find someone to complain about the food as the burger was raw in the middle. Waitress said " is that too pink" like we were in the wrong for sending it back. Other tables around us also had a long wait or missing food. Toilets were extremely dirty. Very gutted as we always come here for a drink when in pooley bridge but unfortunately won't be eating here again.

The Sun Inn has long been one of our favourite pubs, always a warm welcome, literally.... the log burner kicking out some heat....and the staff offering a genuine welcome.. We both had the steak and ale pie and a portion of onion rings to share... definitely a 10/10 beautiful meaty steak, not one piece of gristle or fat, beautiful gravy... we've booked for later in the week with family.... I'm sure at least 2 of us will be ordering the pie again!

Great visit- lamb shank beautiful- super ale. My wife had fish pie which was equally delicious. The pubs in a great spot and dog friendly. Lovely young girl behind the bar. Super young lad serving- very attentive nod bothered. Would have given it 5/5 if it wasn’t for the “fog horn on legs” women totally dominating the room with utter drivel, resulting in the lovely landlord trying to mask her voice by putting music on (he actually said this is what he was doing). Unfortunately it didn’t work. She ruined our visit. Recommended (if she isn’t there).

We were staying nearby and were looking for somewhere to eat. We tried the Sun Inn for the first time. We were not disappointed. I tried the steak and ale pie, one of my favourite meals. I have to say it was the best, (by a long way) that I have ever had. We were nearby a couple of days later and I thought I would try the Cumberland sausage and mash but steak and ale came out instead, once again not disappointed. The hospitality was superb. Very friendly staff. I would recommend this pub for the food and friendly welcome. I will definitely be returning next time I am in the area.

Been several times and as always a very pleasant stay , room very comfortable and clean , but feel the need to make a comment it was very cold outside and at 6 pm we went down to the bar for drinks and noticed the log / fire wasn't lit so we thought we would head along to the Crown and both there Log burners were roaring away so we decided to sit ourselves down Infront of one and enjoy the cozy evening atmosphere , After a great night's sleep breakfast was served in the top small bar as we had our dog and it was superb quality served by a very polite and friendly young girl , there was another couple sitting , the one thing missing was again a log burner sitting there not lit ! What a difference that would have made that into a real cozy room for our breakfast ! We will return but not until next summer .

Overall 7/10 *Cranstons*: £3.85, coffee 2/10 (just not good), roll 7/10 (Cumberland is best of all deals, very peppery/spiced, no butter/only marg, nice chutneys, bread roll a bit doughy) Overall 5/10 *Greggs*: £2.85, coffee 7/10 (actually decent, a bit highly caffeinated for me), roll 5/10 (decent at the price point, always bacon though as sausage are low quality, no butter/only marg) Overall 6/10 *Tim Hortons*: £3.50, coffee 3/10 (just go black coffee in which case 7/10, everything else far too milky), wrap 5/10 (tastes kind of nice at the time, but you know it’s crap - like crack) Overall 4/10 *Rheged*: £4.25, coffee 8.5/10 (no flat white option so too milky), roll 8.5/10 (good quality, butter, lovely crunchy roll, bacon or sausage as an option are fine and an extra quid for both) Overall 8.5/10

Tebay has sadly followed so many other examples of once good places becoming popular and then losing what made them popular in the first place. Used to to be great quality but now feels like any number of other service stations. So sad that family run businesses get greedy and expand or sell out and the quality and service plummets. Americano coffee rubbish more like a filter coffee. Don't bother making a special stop here
